Welcome to our series on superfoods, we are starting to hear a lot more about superfoods; blueberries, pomegranates, Goji berries to name a few. On this episode we will be talking with a nutritionist about what makes a food a superfood, and why these foods are so important for our bodies.

I really like this podcast, and have been eating a good quantity of Superfoods this month. I find my body naturally wants more fruit and green veggies in the summer, but what can I do in the winter to cover this need? I am trying to not eat imported non seasonal foods.

Val, Thanks for your comment, and for your support of local agriculture. Although your treasured trips to the farmers market may have ended by winter, harvesting has not. In fact, there are many foods that are seasonal in winter, such as apples, pears and potatoes. National Geographic’s “The Green Guide’s Top 10 Local Produce Picks – Winter” also lists celery, garlic, kale, onions, rutabagas, turnips, and winter squash. (Thegreenguide.com.) They also suggest trying products that farmers have made from their summer harvest, like preserves and dried peppers. Choosing fresh foods will differ by region of course, but you find retailers and markets that have local foods by zip code at localharvest.org and foodroutes.org. Choose frozen foods too, since they retain high levels of nutrients. For ideas and recipes, go to our recipe search box and type “winter.” And check out our Guide to Winter Squash at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/produce/wintersquash.html.

I’m curious to know your thoughts on “Superfood” drinks. I’ve been seeing more of these nutritional superfood juices being introduced into the market and was curious to their effectiveness. Thanks!

I was also wondering as to the effectiveness of certain “superfood” juice drinks such as Naked Juice and Odwalla. Are they really as nutritious as they claim, or simply a sham? Are there alternative drinks that would be more beneficial to consume?

Malia, thanks for the information abt winter superfoods. I had no idea that potatoes fall into this category. Great links for local food resources.

Superfoods Drinks? Delicious! Many of these drinks are jam-packed with nutrients and antioxidants, just what we all need. However, be aware of serving size and added sugars. Many “smoothie” drinks and juices come in “2 serving” containers, and they contain a lot of natural and sometimes added sugars. Check the ingredient list to avoid refined and artificial sweeteners. Drink half now and half later, or try 1/2 juice and 1/2 water. Want to get fancier? Add sparkling water and some fresh mint!
