Continuing the theme from my last post…which was about products designed for kids with special diets…I have more new “special” products available at Whole Foods Market to share with you. This time we’re talking non-dairy. For those folks who have an allergy or aversion to dairy, their choices can be limited — think rice- and soy-based products. The good news is that there have been some recent innovations that have created more choices.
Let’s say you’d love to eat yogurt, but…you can’t because of the dairy, so you look for a non-dairy yogurt and all you see is soy-based products and…you’ve got an aversion to soy as well. Sound unlikely? It’s not. There are thousands of people who have problems with both dairy and soy. There are even more who want an alternative to dairy, but don’t enjoy the taste of soy. Enter So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt. Turns out, coconut milk is dairy and lactose free. Who knew? The good people at Turtle Mountain did. They have been innovators in frozen non-dairy products since 1990, but only recently got into the yogurt business.
In January we launched their first foray into the category with a fantastic tasting soy-based yogurt. After testing the waters successfully, they let their creative juices flow and recently showed us…in my opinion…the biggest innovation in non-dairy yogurt since the first soy-based yogurts hit the market years ago. These coconut-based non-dairy yogurts are what we refer to as a “no brainer” — as in an obvious choice to sell in our stores. There are six flavors available. Some have a bit of the coconut flavor shine through but others don’t have a hint. My fave is the Passionate Mango. Besides tasting great…and being dairy/lactose free…they’re soy-free, cholesterol-free, trans fat-free, contain pre- and probiotics and are certified vegan. These innovative new products are in stores now. Whether you have an allergy or are just looking to try something new, give them a try.

Fantastic! I am heading to Whole Foods tonight to get some of this yogurt. The weird thing is I have tasted the So Delicious frozen treats (which is to die for yummy!) and often wished I could have a non-dairy yogurt for lunch. This is beautiful to learn. Thanks.

My hubby and I are trying to add more non dairy items into our diet, so this sounds like something we might be willing to try. Thanks for the post on it.
We started buying more organic foods the past year and we seem to notice an over all difference. I guess the pros do outweigh the cons (that being a higher cost) in the long run.

I love whole foods new vegan sections in the prepared foods isle. I would like to make suggestions to keep coming up with new, fresh ideas for these items and things that are really convenient as we have to cook a lot. It could also be accomidating around holidays and parties, (like the 4th of July have a great vegan potato or macaroni salad) because people may have vegans at a party and it would make an easy choice for them to purchase. It may encourage them to buy vegan. Just because it is vegan, doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated. More foods that are seen everyday can easily be vegan and it may give people the opportuniy to try it. A simple macaroni salad with a lot of flavor and dairy-free mayo would be great for a pool party to go with my veggie burger off the grill.
As always, I Love it
Thanks devoting the whole section to the herbivores and I hope you appreciate my suggestion!

I tried this today and I LOVE it. I am allergic to both milk and soy and missed yogurt so much. I tried rice yogurt and it was good in my opinion, but this is far superior. Now if we could have cream cheese, sour cream and cheese, ooh-la-la. Can we say cheesecake!? Too bad the Whole Foods Market is 85 miles away.

These coconut yogurts are PHENOMENAL. I am one of those people: love yogurt, went vegan, trying not to have soy constantly… This tastes better than any soy yogurt, and has the health benefits of probiotics. Coconut flavor (which is quite subtle) goes together with fruit delightfully! YUM!

I love the coconut yogurts! I am one of the people that cannot eat dairy and have problems with soy as well. I’m so happy that Turtle Mountain created this! Thank you! I’ll be buying more and often.

I am one of those people who is allergic to both milk and soy. After recently finding out that water buffalo yogurt (another AMAZING Whole Foods product) doesn’t work for me either, I am beyond delighted to have coconut milk yogurt. The taste and texture are both great. Also, the coconut milk ice cream is great, and my dairy-loving, soy-hating boyfriend thought so, too!

Turtle Mountain has always done a phenomenal job of coming up with delicious vegan foods! I’m going on 17 years of being vegan and since most of them were spent eating soy, on top of soy, on top of more soy, I am no longer able to eat soy at all. I was so excited when Turtle Mountain came out with this coconut milk yogurt and the ice cream. They are delicious! I think the yogurt is better than any of the soy yogurts! The vanilla is my favorite.

How about some coupons for the coconut yogurt? It’s $2.29 at my health food store, more than double the cost of not-so-tasty soy yogurt and, of course, almost quadruple the cost of decent dairy yogurt. I am allergic to dairy but cannot afford to pay these outrageous prices on non-dairy items (no matter how delicious they are). Thanks for the consideration.

Is this product under kosher supervision?
January 19th, 2009 at 12:45 am
In answer to: “Is this product under kosher supervision?”
I find this question very puzzling. This is a total vegan product. All fruits and vegetables are kosher (unless there’s obvious bugs or worms in them, which coconuts are definitely not prone to).
When you become a total vegan, you can stop sweating the “small stuff” like if something is kosher or not, and just enjoy eating only plant-based foods that contain no blood and required no slaughter.
Hope this answered your question.

Finally! I can eat yogurt again. I can’t eat anything with dairy and I don’t like soy so this would be a great alternative. Why didn’t anyone come up with this before? Do you think they can make coconut milk ice cream or coconut milk frozen custard?
January 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am
@sevcompton Yes, they are kosher and certified by Kehilla Kosher.

I am another of those with a severe allergy to dairy, and can’t have soy too often. I was thrilled when the coconut line came out. Both the soy & the coconut yogurts are yummy and the frozen line is just as delish.
Kudos to Whole Foods for carrying the entire catalog (or at least a good portion) of Turtle Mountain’s products.

Hooray for more vegan goodies! Now please, please, please open a Whole Foods in Berlin, DE.

I am anxious to try this Coconut line, as I enjoy the other tastes you’ve created. And I would truly appreciate COUPONS any time. Thanks for the health!

Thanks for the update. I am also dairy allergic and am very excited about the coconut milk yogurt. I am however interested in finding a flavorful cheese. Before i discovered my dairy allergy, I was a cheese fanatic…it has been a long time sonce I’ve had it but I miss it still!! I haven’t been able to find a soy cheese that I liked. Any suggestions?? Is there such thing as a dairy free whipped creme??

I love Turtle Mountain’s So-Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurts. I found them at Whole Foods last year. The Passionate Mango and Blueberry flavors are my favorites. They are heavenly toppings on my gluten free pancakes and waffles. I made a gluten free lemon cake the other night and used the blueberry flavor yogurt as a frosting…it was fabulous! Thank you for these great tasting alternatives to soy & dairy which I am no longer able to eat at all. And yes, if you decide to send out coupons for this product, count me in!!!

I recently discovered that I have type 2 diabetes. I really like coconut… but how ’bout the carbos? I’ll check it.
Eat ya later…

These yogurts are excellent; however, I find the flavored varieties overly sweet (except for blueberry). I prefer to buy the unflavored coconut yogurt, then add my own fresh or frozen fruit (Actually, I find the the unflavored coconut yogurt sweet enough to eat with or WITHOUT fruit!. By the way, I also LOVE your frozen coconut milk products. They are OUTSTANDING –better, in fact, than any ice cream I have eaten. It’s wonderful to have a delicious alternative to yogurt and ice cream, despite my sensitivity to dairy and soy!!!

I’ve seen these at Whole Foods but never noticed that they were coconut based and I do not care for the soy based yogurts. I have tried the coconut almond popsicles made with coconut milk and my only complaint is that I wished they made them bigger! I would love to try the yogurt but just as someone else has posted they are expensive! Any coupons?
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 am
I really like these yogurts, but the price puts them out of my range. Before, they were .99 cents, now they sell for $1.50-$2! I just can’t justify spending that much when I can get a large tub of soy yogurt for $3. However, if the price goes down or the plain coconut yogurt becomes available in a large tub, I would happily return to this product.

where is a list of ingredients? like, sweetners?,and which live cultures?, etc. Love the coconut ice cream thanks
January 23rd, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I really love this yogurt. I just don’t want them to stop stocking it. Whole Foods have a habit of getting me hooked on something and then they stop carrying it. Anyways it is a very good tasting yogurt.

Turle Mountain has the best non-dairy ice cream and yogurts. The coconut milk products are definitely thinking out of the box. The soy ice creams are to die for–they are awesome! The coconut yogurts are very rich and creamy– a little too sweet for me. I have also been on the lookout for a vegan cheese substitute (that tastes great) due to my milk allergy.

In response to the question about dairy free whipping creme… I recently stumbled across something at Whole Foods which is called Soy Cream (I got it around Thanksgiving 2008) and it whips up just like whipping cream. I found it on the aisle with the almond/soy milks. It worked great for the dairy free pumpkin pie I made. So long as it doesn’t get discontinued, I will continue to get it since it worked great! Even the friends with no food allergies who tried it said it was good.

I just tried the So delicious coconut milk yogurt and I love it but I am concerned abut saturated fat as my cholesterol level is borderline. Does anyone know if coconut milk saturated fat is different from animal saturated fat? This yogurt is so good I will eat it no matter what but I will be much more moderate in the amount I consume if the saturated fat is a problem.
Thanks.

What about that B12! Where does that come from?
I agree they yogurt is so delicious but it is a little sweet. And costs too much. The large tubs of plain with your own fruit is a great answer for that.

They are sooo good! My favorite is chocolate peanut butter =]

I absolutely love this yogurt and am so happy that there is an alternative to dairy and soy! I suffer from IBS and after using this product for one week every day, I experienced digestive ease that I’ve never felt before. I want to shout it on the roof top! I LOVE their ice cream products too. Finally, a product that tastes like ice cream (only better) and won’t upset my stomach. This is heaven! I worry too about the sugars and the fats, but for now, this is great for my digestive health.

I’m still waiting for the non-dairy yogurt that is as low in calories and sugar as some of the cow’s milk yogurts.
Why isn’t this happening. The say thing happened with soy milk. At first it was all very rich. When are you going to carry the wonderful soy yogurts they have in England? I hear there is a Silk’s kefir type product, so how come we can’t get that at Whole Foods? Are you purposely carrying only the richest products?
I’m definitely not delighted.

Loving the Coconut Yogurt. I have been looking for 5 years for an alternative yogurt. I have bad soy and dairy allergies and missed yogurt so much. I found these on the shelves at whole foods and I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM ALL! I even like the plain. I pour a little of my MangoOrange Naked juice into the plain and it’s so delish! Thank you Thank you Thank you and I agree with the poster with IBS that says it helped there digestives system. I experienced improvement as well and I eat at least 1 every single day and that $2.29 @ shop n shop kills me.. I did catch a sale @ Whole foods of 3 for 4 and I purchased like 20.
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:30 am
This is absolutely fabulous news! I have a daughter who is allergic to dairy and doesn’t tolerate soy all that well. I am SO happy to learn about this alternative! I will definitely be heading to Whole Foods to pick up some of this product!

Is the Turtle Mountain coconut yogurt available in Canada yet? Any idea when it will be?
September 12th, 2009 at 2:07 am
I tried the coconut vanilla yogurt and really liked it, but I prefer something that is more natural. Similar to thier coconut vanilla bean ice-cream. Is it possible to make it without the artificial/processed ingredients?
October 11th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
I only eat WholeSoy brand yogurt (tastes best in my opinion) but was intrigued enough to try this new yogurt since I love anything coconut despite not liking So Delicious soy yogurts.
This stuff is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too sweet. Texture is also reminiscent of snot. I could not finish it (Pina Colada flavor).
Their coconut-milk based ice cream is fabulous though.
