Sometimes I find gift giving especially challenging. With all the need in the world, why the heck should I get Aunt Mary Lou a new apron? She has 10 already! What I really want to do is make a donation or give a charitable gift in her honor. But then there’s nothing tangible to unwrap and somehow the family turns me into the Scrooge of the season. “Why can’t Paige give normal gifts like everyone else?”
If a version of this story plays out for you, the Feed 100 Bag just might be the perfect option. Here’s the deal: you buy the Feed 100 stylish reusable shopping bag to give as a tangible gift and part of the proceeds go to providing 100 meals to hungry Rwandan school children. Win-win, right?
The Bag
Designed solely for Whole Foods Market, the FEED 100 reusable bag is made of organic cotton and natural burlap and is produced with a commitment to ensuring fair treatment of workers, livable wages, overtime pay and safe, clean working environments. It is a lightweight, fresh white tote that collapses easily into its base, which is a zippered rectangular burlap pouch emblazoned with the FEED logo and the number 100. An eco-friendly fashion statement that helps educate people about hunger and what we can do to alleviate it. It’s perfect to use for your groceries and for about 50 million other things too.
The Good
Each bag purchased provides 100 nutritious meals to hungry school age children in Rwanda through the United Nation World Food Program’s School Feeding Program. In 1994, Rwanda lost 800,000 men, women and children to genocide; as a result, the nation’s economy and social structures were decimated. School feeding is one of the most effective solutions to stopping hunger and breaking the poverty cycle. Since 2003, the World Food Program has provided free, nutritious school lunches to Rwanda’s children in 300 schools in the most food-deprived areas. Each hot, nutrient-rich meal draws boys and girls to school, helps them learn, and may be the only meal they have all day. School attendance has grown from 63 percent to 93 percent, and to help close the educational gender gap, girls with good attendance may receive extra rations to take home to their families. Girls with just a few years of education have fewer children, have them later in life, and are better prepared to care for and educate them.
The Cost
When a Whole Foods Market customer buys a FEED 100 bag, $10 is donated by the FEED Foundation to the World Food Program’s Rwanda School Feeding operation, with the remainder going to cover the costs of making the bag and oversight of the program by the FEED Foundation. The bags are produced with high-quality, 100% organic cotton and natural burlap. All FEED bags are made as eco-friendly and fairly as possible in audited and certified fair labor facilities. To further help the initiative, Whole Foods Market is not making any profit on these bags – in fact many of our stores are offering this bag for a special price of $25 for the holiday season – kicking in our own donation to help feed hungry children. If you aren’t close to one of our stores, check out online ordering through FEED.
Hope this helps make your holiday shopping (and gift unwrapping) more rewarding!

I love the bags. I bought one for myself and one for a gift. This gift gives and gives again. This is a wonderful thing. Thanks to all that contributed to this.
The most important thing is that children will get fed.

If you are in a better place financially you can actually use this charitable donation bag as a gift bag filling with other presents(as you can with all WFM reusable bags)and its one less paper giftbag to get tossed. The standard WFM reusable bags are a lot less expensive than paper gift bags, too.

This is such a wonderful thing for your company to do. With all the cut-backs happening in our country today you should really be commended. I do not have a Whole Foods locally, but always enjoy shopping at the Columbus, OH store when I visit my son’s family, only 2-3 times a month. The entire store is totally awesome. The employees are SO friendly and helpful. The wide range of foods can be overwhelming, but the employees are always helpful to give great recipes/ advice. The quality is superior and the freshness can not be beat. The whole experience of shopping for groceries has reached an unexpected adventure. The 365 brands are superior to major name brands and cost much less. I have an addiction to the freshly roasted coffees and teas.

This company makes it worth while to work for…I like my company and all the good things it stands for; what more can humanity ask for from a company like Wholefoods Market? God bless Wholefoods Market and John Mackey for extending a helping hand to the children in Rwanda.

What a great idea.. I love Whole Foods. I like using recycle bags for groceries and carrying home other items as well. Thanks for feeding children who cannot get food for themselves.
April 21st, 2009 at 8:17 pm
I changed all light bulbs from the old ones to the new ones..and use resuable bags everywhere I go and shop in. In fact when employees go to give me a bag, my response is “always on bag please” And I try to walk to alot of my errands.
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:37 am
Sounds like a wonderful idea. WHOLE FOODS does it again and please keep up the great work.
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:39 am
I do everything within my power to reduce, reuse, and recycle everyday.

Whole Foods continues to show great leadership and is a model for corporate America
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:47 am
We use dish towels rather than paper towels; glasses/mugs instead of styrofoam cups; cold water for most everything; recycle; turn off all lights/furnace whenever possible; when shopping for just a couple items, place them in your purse rather than using a bag; combine your errands and run them on the way to or from work, instead of making a separate trip; and try to work from home as much as possible. The list is endless!!
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:55 am
I’m already recycling cans/bottles at work and at home. We’ve changed out most of our unit light bulbs to CFLs and it made a positive change in our electric bill. Now, I’m attempting to get our condo to switch out a lot of floods they have in various places in the 180-unit building to CFL floods, which should impact their electric bill greatly

AND the bag makes me aware of the Whole Foods environment!!
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:24 am
I am using cloth bags at all stores to help cut down on waste. I also started a compost pile to get rid of kitchen waste my garden looks great after three years of work. I think small things hehelp MOTHER EARTH.
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:42 am
Make my own coffee in a reuseable mug in the morning and bring my lunch in a reuseable container opposed to plastic baggies.
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:49 am
We compost to make our own soil for our garden. Recycle, reuse, and trying to conserve energy.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:04 am
Walk to physical therapy. Take quicker showers. Eat less quantity of food.
That’s a start.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 am
I’m looking at the earth through my heart and my own body through the language of love. I am seeking the foods that feed me well with less consumption and provide me with greater energy to do more without stress. I am making my body feel comfortable with its issues until they improve or dissolve. I’m linking my heart to the work of other who need my support with willingness to take steps to back them with my new-found strength.

Replacing my most of my lawn (grass) with more water resistence plants & other landscaping.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 am
Two months ago we purchased 4 3 gallon buckets for only $2.59 each. We have one at the kitchen sink and the other 3 are for the showers. Every time we turn on the faucet we get about 2 1/2 gallons of water in the bucket before the water gets hot. With two teenagers and two adults we estimate to save 10,000 gallons per year! We have been refilling the outdoor jacuzzi and fountain in addition to watering indoor plants and the vegetable garden.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 am
Debra – I have been using cloth napkins for the last six months and not buying paper ones anymore. I use microfiber cloths instead of reaching for a paper towel. I can wash both and reuse easily.
I have been baking gifts for my friends and family for awhile and I cut them into usable sizes (like half loaves, a quarter of a round corn bread); they are easier to wrap and accented with a recycled ribbon. I put them in a party bag that I have saved or even a small paper food bag with added colored pen decorations – add a piece of white tissue paper that can also be reused…add a bow to the handle and voila – a nice homemade gift made with caring and love. We are also able to get water from a well and put it in reusable gallon bottles that I get from my friend. Also my friend gets cut up fruit in glass mason jars and she saves those for us as well to reuse. We share them with others for fall canning and Christmas gifts of eggnog. We also had nitrogen added to our tires this winter when it was offered Free at an oil change and we find that the tire pressure remains stabilized during the extreme temperature changes thus helping us with gas mileage. We also do errands all at once with a route and not daily. Thanks, let’s keep cleaning up our planet.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:12 am
Make every effort to use by reusable bags rather than paper or plastic. Get more organic in my eating and buying habits
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:41 am
I am planting an organic garden just like the Victory Gardens of the past. I will donate to my local food pantry. I have been collecting cloth tote bags for decades and I use them whenever I go shopping at each and every store no matter what it sells. I now have my entire family using cloth bags. I am sure someone will enjoy receiving this bag as a gift. I even take my cloth bags in my luggage when I travel so that I can use them instead of having to figure out what to do with the plastic or paper bags at my hotel. I sew, and make cloth tote bags for gifts all the time.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:48 am
I think it’s a wonderful thing, being able to help feed children. It’s no fault of their own that they are poor. If we can save a few lives we can be very proud!
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 am
I’ve created a xeric garden in my backyard where there used to be a grass lawn. Colorado plants and some others that are resistant to drought are being used which means a lot less water than the grass that it replaced.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:13 am
I am being frugal and sharing all that I can.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:41 am
I started using cloth napkins many years ago when I realized that I was already washing clothes, adding napkins to the wash was no big deal.
We had to have a water softner in our new home. I think one of the unexpected impacts on the enviornment is that we use much less soap and detergents. We can use less harsh cleaning products too.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 am
My Resolution is to unplug unused items, use my recycle bags every time I shop and only turn on lights when needed. My sister and I have started recycling at our parent’s home. I will make an effort to purchase more recyclable products, learn more about how I can help our planet and encourage my husband to do the same.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 am
Everyday I pick up three pieces of litter. It makes me feel good, and lots of people notice, which may force me out of a “job” One can only hope.
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I will CONTINUE to use re-useable bags. I will CONTINUE to recycle. I will CONTINUE to use green products.
I will reduce the number of lights I have on in my home at the same time. I am guilty of that.
I will do all in my power to do anything required to help our planet earth.
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I will continue to recycle and use green bags for produce items to avoid waste.
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Our family has cut way back on using paper products (paper plates, cups, etc.) and are reusing paper bags at the grocery store.
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:21 pm
The easiest thing to do is to wash laundry in cold water, and of course bring your own cloth bags to the supermarket.
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I plan to buy a bike and figure out other uses for things that are usually discarded.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I am already using cold water cycle for ” not dirty clothes”.Hand washing some dishes saving the dish washer for dishes with actual stuff on them . Talking about these green ideas helps. I am surprised at how few people do anything green including friends and family when I see them in their environment.Do not preach just look for opportunities.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I will eat less take out food to reduce the amount of disposable containers and flatware going to our landfills.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:39 pm

April 22nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I am going to make a real effort to not purchase anything that isn’t packaged in earth friendly packaging.
April 22nd, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I AM UNPLUGING MY ELECTICAL ITEMS THAT ARE NOT USED. I ALSO RECYCLE CANS AT MY HOUSE AND MY DAUGHTERS HOUSE. I AM ALSO USEING THE REUSABLE BAG FROM THE GROCERY STORE FOR ALL MY SHOPPING NEEDS.
April 22nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Use damp newspapers to clean windows and dry newspapers to finish and shine the windows; then recycling the same used newspapers in my blue bag for further recycling.
April 22nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
This year, I am resolved to use fewer plastic bags, particularly ziploc type bags. I will be using containers for my son to take his lunch and snacks to school that he can bring home and wash. And I am putting a reusable bag into my purse so that I will always have handy at the grocery store instead of using the store’s plastic bags.
April 22nd, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Remember to turn off the faucet when brushing my teeth, instead of letting it run. And I brush my teeth alot!
April 22nd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
What a great bag!
April 22nd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
I pledge to cook more healty food at home and let take out for my family. Not only will that save the earth from all the take out containers but my family will be eating more healthy.
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
I am going to stop using plasic bags at stores and I am finally going to get a composter! Most importantly get my children involved in conservation. We have also limited our use of processed foods.
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Nice bag, powerful reminder to the world!
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm
I’ve started vermicomposting with my kids! We now have over 1,000 pet worms! we recycle newspaper, shredded bills, junk mail our fruit and veggie scraps and at the same we make fertilizer for our plants and veggie garden! I’ve also started my second compost bin. I hope to teach my family to be good stewards of our resources. And care for our earth!
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I will decrease my usage of plastic bags more and also be more conservative with the water and electricity usage in my home.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I will try to recycle more items and buy less products that will end up in a landfill. I will also try walking more often. I will change the lightbulbs that we are currently using to ones that last longer throughout our house.
April 23rd, 2009 at 1:44 am
We have 2 ideas that we are forging ahead with as a family. We have greatly reduced our use of plastic bags by keeping a stash in the car. More and more, it is becoming a habit to bring them into the store. Our other idea is biking. To get healthy and enjoy some low cost familly activity, we searched Craig’s list for 4 used bikes & a burley and plan to start biking this summer or sooner.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:49 am
I will frequent my farmer’s market for locally grown organic food, every other week, at our year round farmer’s market. I will also make sure that all of my clients know that their food stamps can be used towards fresh local produce at this farmer’s market.
April 23rd, 2009 at 6:06 am
Yesterday I went to Staples to return ink cartridges as well as well as plan on getting a new printer so I will trade my old one in for a new one with a fifty$ discount. Then we will start growing mushrooms from all of the trees that we lost it is a pefect climate for growing this veggie as well as other veggies in our garden can not wait then we plan to sell at local farmers market as well as restaurants in the surrounding areas.
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:07 am
Search/Buy 100% recyclable items
I love the recycled items. I search them our in every store I go. Recycled items are just as good as non-recycled items except, they won’t harm the planet earth. You can find anything from: aluminum foil, to brief cases, hanging file folders, storage boxes, & much more. Be sure to look for the recycle symbol or wording on each item you purchase. If you can’t find recyclable items where you typically shop, ask the store manager about it. Maybe you’ll make that store aware of recyclable items and help save the planet.
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 am
I like the idea of going green. I will turn of the computer when I am not using it and I will save the life of trees by doble side printing.
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:27 pm
EARTH DAY 2009 Will do the earth good every day by recycling, buy locally, and composting.
April 24th, 2009 at 5:24 am
I will use glass and stainless steel containers.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Hi,
On Earth Day 2009, we had a candlelight dinner and did not turn up the light. We decided not to eat meat min. 2 days a week, we use only organic shampoos and bath products. I just planted organic seeds in organic soil. Best part is when my little son asks “Is it organic? From Whole Foods?”
April 24th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Since I pay taxes, I know that many of my dollars will automatically go to people all over the world to alleviate hunger through the new Obama initiatives. When I was either fully or somewhat employed, I gave to the Adventis World Relief Agency that provides water, irrigation, seeds, planting and growing techniques training (to help out, not out), as well as many educational opportunities to more sites than any other organization in the world. I always plant a tree, a flower, seeds when I can. I encourage all to utilize organic products and do so as possible. Likewise, every attempt is made to consider packaging, and healthfulness of purchases. When eating out or whenever asked for food, I give a homeless person some of whatever I have available when I know they appreciate and work to achieve a better life. Peace and Love!
April 25th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Started using Sigg water bottles. bringing my own resuable bags when shopping.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
The town I live in recycles big time and I am so grateful. We try to do our part to “Live Lightly On The Earth”. Cans, bottles, plastic, paper and more go to the bins. Peels and cores and trimmings to the compost. Cloth bags to shop with. Use less, waste less, Happy Momma Earth.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Great Idea! I think I’ll throw in some curry chocolate, a hemp shirt and organic honey. No, I don’t work for WFM but I do live in Austin and we visit the mother ship regularly. I know what she likes!
April 28th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Love the bag!!! Love the store!! Thanks for everything!!!
April 28th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
I use cloth bags when shopping and use our own water bottles. Also, we try not to use the A/C until it is totally unbearable which is when the temps hit 100F.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
We have three of these bags and love them!
Love more the idea that we are contributing in a meaningful way.
Go Whole Foods!
April 28th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
The Feed Bag is a great way to shop, chic looking too!
April 29th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
What a fabulous idea! I will ONLY shop in Whole Foods…(Union Square). I cannot imagine my life before Whole Foods. What did I do? Fairway, Citerella….stopped shopping at the other so-called food stores years ago.
I actually get palpatations as I enter the store. And I always find good prices on your 365 products. My only complaint: no quarts of organic milk. Not everyone can drink a 1/2 gallon. And the organic milk that is not yours, is ridiculously expensive.
April 29th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
I love to give fragrant gifts. Jason makes wonderful fragrances. I love the cranberry body soap, they also make a gift pack for the holidays.
April 29th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
I try to recycle. I also use coffee grinds for my roses.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
I always recycle and so does my daughter. it is very important, and i think now i am addicted to it.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I love the idea of the Feed 100 bag and want to share it with everyone I know, as gifts.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I think this a great idea, and love whole foods market. I can find products at whole foods I can’t find anywhere else.
April 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
I love the bag and the variety of yogurts. I go to the stores in NY and NJ. They’re great.
April 30th, 2009 at 7:01 am
What a great bag for a outstanding cause. Thanks Whole Foods for making this possible and Thanks Mom for teaching me graditude and sharing.
April 30th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I would love a bag……My mom passed twelve years ago, I miss her so much, I am a mom to a kitty only, so this gift would make me not miss my Mom June’s cooking so much….I could go shopping and have something to actually DO that day….Thank you for your consideration……….
May 5th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I think is a wonderful thing to do. I wish we could do this for Darfur and Somalia as well. As for me and being green I’m not so sure what more I can do. I recycle like I had to in germany, it’s a great practice to get into we make less garbage then everyone else. I use biodegradable poppy bags for my puppy. Always use canvas bas to shop with. Use no toxic environmentally cleaning products. My biggest abuse I’m sorry to say is paper towels. So that’s my plan to try and use more kitchen towels instead of paper for cleaning and drying things.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Whole Foods is my favorite place for fresh fish – always superior quality and the best I can find! A sure hit for me on Mom’s Day!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
I do not live near a Whole Food Store but have family and friends that do. They have purchased many awesome items and shared with me. Hopefully one day soon a Whole Foods will open in either Montgomery, Alabama or Dothan ,Alabama areas near my home. Thank goodness for internet shopping for now. Love, love the wonderful recipes!

Mothers day will be special this year! I am here to celebrate with my 80 year old mother and we will be shopping at Whole Foods for all of our dinner supplies AND we will be buying your special Dry Cat Food so that our cats may celebrate with us. My first job when I was 16 was in a natural food store and our family has owned a natural food store. We find Whole Foods to be a complete shopping store for us.
May 6th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Shopping at Whole Foods is always a pleasant experience. I’ve been in so many from beginning days in Austin, to Dallas, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Summerlin, etc. and have never been disappointed with any store or purchase. Team members are knowledgeable, professional and friendly. As for favorite items, it’s hard to say as I have so many that I love. Some are Rudy’s bread, the 365 products, and the great prepared foods. The produce dept. is exceptional as is the seafood dept. with “always” fresh fish to choose from. I have called long distance and ordered specialty baskets from stores in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas, and the new store in Mountain View, California. Each order was exceptional and the people who received them said the assortment was amazing and beautifully put together. The people who took the information from me were exceptional in being helpful and following through to perfection with the information and getting everything right. I live in Houston and “love” shopping at Whole Foods several times a week.

Is this bag machine washable? I have several and would like to throw them in the washer if possible. Thanks!

I bought this as a gift and LOVE the idea!!! I am actually going back and getting more (for myself and for future gifts). Why not do some good while gift giving? You know, I would love to see this bag offered year ’round and for all countries in the world…not that Rwanda doesn’t need it. So much starvation in the world, even in our own country due to this economic downturn. The majority of those going hungry and homeless are sadly children.

If I had known about the Feed bag I would have gotten these for my relatives. My mom is always asking us to donate money in her name to a charity, I would have done this. Next time.
