Great news for recyclers out there! Some of our Whole Foods Market stores are piloting a new program for recycling #5 plastic with Preserve called Gimme 5. If you don’t have the recycling numbers memorized (like me), #5 is commonly used in containers for yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, medicine bottles, etc. I’m told that many communities don’t have recycling for #5 plastics and when it is collected, it’s often shipped to Asia to be burned as energy. Yuck! Oh yeah, as an added benefit, Gimme 5 also accepts Brita water filters for recycling. (Since water filters are all different, this is only for Brita.)
So here’s the deal. You bring your #5 plastics to a drop-off bin at our participating stores. (We’re starting with our stores in the Midwest, North Atlantic, Northeast and Northern California. Check for specific stores.) We’ll send the plastic to Preserve, who make recycled household products including toothbrushes, razors, tableware, and kitchen products. When they get it, the plastic is ground up and turned into clean plastic pellets. The pellets are then sent to Preserve’s manufacturing facilities to be transformed into new Preserve products. Obviously, when you choose to purchase Preserve stuff that closes the loop on the whole recycling chain. How cool is that?
Preserve Gimme 5 is supported by a partnership with Organic Valley and Stonyfield Farm. Pats on backs all around. This whole program started because Preserve wondered: “Wouldn’t it be cool if more people could recycle their #5 plastic? They could just fill up their reusable shopping bags and drop off their #5s every time they go shopping at Whole Foods Market.” A Green Mission Team Leader in our Reston, Virginia store had the same good idea. Together they piloted the first Preserve Gimme 5 program and it worked! Store guests loved the bin and filled it with so much clean #5 plastic that Team Members emptied the bin three times a week. Preserve called their friends at Organic Valley and Stonyfield Farm. Together, they agreed to fund a program that would make #5 recycling available at other Whole Foods Market stores.
Preserve hopes to expand Gimme 5 to more Whole Foods Market stores in the coming months. If your store isn’t on the list of current stores and you’d like to see it in your store, post a comment below and I’ll make sure the stores and Preserve get the message!

This is a great initiative, so I’m disappointed to see no Pennsylvania stores included in the pilot program. I hope you’ll add the Jenkintown, PA, store soon. About six months ago, we stopped buying yogurt and cottage cheese because we were generating so many #5 plastic containers, and we can only recycle #1 and #2 here. (We still occasionally buy the Vermont Creamery yogurt that comes in the glass bottle.) We’re looking forward to seeing this program come to our store! Thanks.

Very exciting! Hope this will make it to Texas. I know it would be a success here in the DFW area. What a great partnership!
January 20th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Fantastic! Hopefully we can get this going in Atlanta!
January 20th, 2009 at 10:55 am
If this should expand to your SE stores, would really like to see this happen at the Mt. Pleasant, SC location.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Please consider Greenville, SC! Lots of hummus, yogurt, brita filters and more waiting to be donated to Gimme 5.
Also, I use a Preserve toothbruth that comes in a recyclable container that you can ship back to them (really wonderful toothbrush, by the way). Would I be able to recycle it at WF with Gimme 5 instead of shipping it back? Not sure what # plastics the toothbrush and container are.
Thanks for being so proactive!
January 20th, 2009 at 10:59 am
This is a great project! Hopefully it will not be long until you bring it to Southern New Jersey as well. Although, I do live in the first city in the US to mandate recycling.
January 20th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I’m so happy you guys are doing this! I really hate having to just throw away those containers with the infernal number 5 on the bottom, but I’ve yet to find anyone that will recycle them. Please bring this program to Houston! I started saving my 5s today, so I’ll be very happy to have a way to recycle them soon.
Thank you!
January 21st, 2009 at 3:14 am
Excellent! Please add the Philadelphia stores soon; the city only picks up #1 and #2 here.
January 21st, 2009 at 7:02 am
Would love to see this in the Louisville store!
January 21st, 2009 at 8:40 am
I definitely hope this makes it to both Philadelphia locations ASAP. This is a very exciting green initiative and I would definitely start buying soy yogurt and certain cosmetic products if their containers were recyclable.
January 21st, 2009 at 10:27 am
I am very disappointed that stores in Philadelphia and/or New Jersey have not begun the initiative to recycle #5 plastic. Most everyone I know, especially in Center City Philadelphia, is very environmentally conscious and would probably take advantage of this opportunity.
January 21st, 2009 at 6:31 pm
I’ve been bugging Brita about recycling in the U.S. for years! Now that it’s here, PLEASE add SoCal stores! We’re a huge market (no pun intended) and in most areas surrounding your stores, there is already serious recycling going on–just not the sort that takes Brita.
January 22nd, 2009 at 12:47 am
A few shortcomings but overall a good program. Thanks for going green.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:26 am
Good for me. I have been saving all those yogurt containers. I’m hope there is one soon in Silver Spring, MD.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 am
The new store in Venice CA rocks! It would be even better with this recycling program.
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:59 am
I don’t see any Pennsylvania stores listed, but Jenkintown IS participating in this program. When will you update the listing and when will North Wales begin the program?
Thank you
January 23rd, 2009 at 6:38 am
Please add Short Pump VA to the Gimme 5 recycle list.. i just hate throwing anything away! Awesome initiative!
January 23rd, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Awesome! I love Preserve toothbrushes and now I have somewhere to bring all those #5’s I never threw out! Yah!
January 26th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Correction to above post: There are no PA stores currently particpating in this program, including the Jenkintown store.
January 26th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Would love you to add the Raleigh, NC area stores to the program!
January 26th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
This is a great project!!! I would love to see it take place in South Florida (Miami Beach) We always seem to be behind the mark when it comes to new recycling programs.. I really hope we can change the way of living and thinking in our area…
January 26th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Please come to Virginia!!!
January 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
The Reston, VA store is mentioned in the article as the pilot store for this program, but is not listed as a Gimme5 collection site. Why not and why are there no other participating stores in Virgina? This is a great program and should be expanded.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Please expand this program!
Especially to North Carolina – many eco-conscious focus in Raleigh and Cary would make the most of it.
January 28th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Would love to have this in Greenville, SC!!
January 28th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Please Please Please add this to Texas! Houston! Great idea and I’m ready, willing and able to recycle.
January 29th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Stop at the Columbus Circle WFM to drop off your #5!
10 Columbus Circle 10019 New York City
January 29th, 2009 at 10:10 am
@Anne: I hope you can resume your yogurt and cottage cheese habit soon! Preserve is currently working with the region that oversees Pennsylvania stores and we hope to have our Gimme 5 program up and running there later this year.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
@Emily: Yes! You can drop your Preserve Toothbrush (and any other Preserve products) in the Gimme 5 bin for recycling. We grind up the toothbrush and the reusable travel case and, with the help of a partner, recycle it into plastic lumber for things like picnic tables and boardwalks. I’m so glad you like your Preserve Toothbrush!
January 29th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
@John: While the Reston, VA store led the pilot, they unfortunately discovered a glitch in their backend operations that we have to smooth out before we can begin collecting their plastic and delivering it to Preserve. We are working with the stores in Virginia and other states in the Mid Atlantic region to iron out these wrinkles and bring Preserve Gimme 5 to these stores.
January 29th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
All of us at Preserve are so pleased to hear the positive reaction to our Gimme 5 program. Our partners at Organic Valley and Stonyfield Farm agree that we would like to make Preserve Gimme 5 available to all Whole Foods Market stores that would like to participate. If your store does not currently participate but you wish it did, you can stop by the customer service desk the next time you’re shopping and urge them to join the program. And, in the meantime, you can return your #5s directly to Preserve for recycling–http://www.preserveproducts.com/recycling/index.html
Thanks for your support!

I hope they start this program in Baltimore, Maryland, I shop at whole foods at least once a week, so being able to drop off my #5 recyclables will save me alot of trouble instead of having to mail them to Gimme5.
January 29th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Great Idea!! I live in So. Nevada-so non-green here! Would love to see this at our Green Valley and Town Square stores!!
January 29th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I would like to see this happen in the south region as well. As the lead receiver at Cary WFM in NC I see a lot of plastic either thrown out or recycled and then thrown out. Our state of the art distribution center in Georgia is doing all they can to recycle what we can and I think this would be an excellent addition.
January 30th, 2009 at 9:46 am
This is such a great idea! I live in the Inland Northwest and unfortunately the nearest Whole Foods Store to me is 300 miles away. Is this program only located in Whole Foods Stores? The Co-Op would also be a great place for this.
January 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
I would love to see this in Columbus, OH! Awesome program!!
January 31st, 2009 at 3:56 pm
There are many WF shops in the Phoenix market, and I would love to see this program here as well! Thank you so much for replying and letting us know we can mail stuff directly to Preserve as well- awesome!
January 31st, 2009 at 8:49 pm
I cannot believe there is not a store recycling in Austin, Texas. We are a Green Community and growing by the minute. Please put one here! Until then, I guess I will collect and mail them in myself. I had no idea they were sent to China in when put in our recycling bin!!!
February 1st, 2009 at 10:30 am
I would love to see this in the Lamar store in Austin, TX. I live about an hour north of Austin, but drive to Whole Foods a couple times a month. I’m also an avid recycler and here in Temple, it’s #1 & 2 only,,,GRRR. So please consider Austin!!
February 2nd, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I saw on the list here in Jacksonville we will be able to take our number 5’s on Feb. 16. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I am so glad there will now be a place we can take our number 5’s.
February 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 am
Hello! This is an awesome idea but I thought Colorado would be listed in the pilot… Would you please add Colorado..
Thanks Much!!!
February 3rd, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Thank you! I live in Brooklyn and there is very limited plastic recycling. Yesterday I regretfully tossed a #5 container and now today I stumbled across this notice. America is marching slowly forward!
Thanks Whole Foods
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Just wanted to say that for all you people waiting to get this program going in your area, Preserve DOES accept #5 recycling by mail and has instructions for shipping it to them here:
http://www.preserveproducts.com/gimme5/index.html
Unfortunately you have to pay for shipping if you don’t live near a Gimme 5 drop-off location, but if you check out the usps site for size and weight specifications, you can keep the personal cost to a minimum!
February 4th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Hope this comes to San Diego soon!
February 4th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
would like to see the whole foods store in marlton, nj added to the list.

Hello, Whole foods.
I was very excited about this wonderful idea.
I went to Deerfield store today with Brita filter and #5 plastic products. Unfortunately, Your customer servise staff has no idea about Gimme 5 recycling. They were very polite to say they would take care of them. Please let them know of this Gimme 5 plan.

Starbucks’ new cold drink cups are now #5. Please save them (or preferably use your own or ask for glass if you’re enjoying your drink at the store) and drop them at WF when you’re out and about.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:10 am
The Union Square Manhattan store had the bin out for about a week. Then it was moved behind customer service, totally inaccessible because of the lines wrapping around. The staff directing people traffic didn’t seem to know what I was talking about.
Great job Whole Foods.
If you really want to support communities you build your store in, make these bins accessible. Show people how much plastic could be recycled. Maybe this will be incentive for cities to launch larger scale programs. Hiding the recycling bin made me never want to shop in your store again.
February 19th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I’m very happy about this great Gimme 5 Recycling partnership. Partnering with like-minded organizations is what it’s all about. Please bring Gimme 5 Recycling to the other San Francisco, CA Whole Foods on FRANKLIN ST. I believe it will be well-used. Thanks very much!
February 19th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I went to the Whole Foods at 24th and 7th in NYC with my yogurt cups but they didn’t know what I was talking about. I didn’t realize that the program was only in a few stores. I mostly shop at this store and I would like a bin there. Thanks this is a great idea.
February 20th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I just want to make absolutely certain: These #5 containers are NOT shipped overseas right??
They stay here (US/CA/Mex), correct? Where are the new products manufactured? We do not purchase products from China, for instance, as a rule.
Thanks!
February 21st, 2009 at 6:03 pm
@ acacia: Preserve recycles all of our materials in the USA and manufactures all of our products in the USA.
Thanks,

Ditto what Mo said, bring this program to Phoenix/Scottsdale
My local store is Paradise Valley, and you could make me a customer by luring me in with this opportunity.

Hi. So far, the Berkeley, CA store does not have the Gimme5 bin. When I took my Preserve toothbrushes to drop off, the bin hadn’t arrived but the manager went ahead and took my toothbrushes from me. Any word on when this will happen in Berkeley?

[...] Few communities offer recycling for #5 products, which include yogurt cups, hummus containers, and medicine bottles. Thank you for the initiative. We wouldlove to see this hapening in Southern california (palos verde, redondo beach and Long Beach). Can you please let them know how great it will be to have a drop off out here. Thank you again.
March 2nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
PLEASE convince the stores in Philadelphia to join this program! I’ve given up begging for a Whole Foods store in my state (Delaware) but I do occasionally drive into or past Philly and would happily save my #5 plastics for those trips.
March 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Charlottesville VA is a whole-hearted recycling city. Our C’ville store was not even aware of this program. Please make “Gimme #5″ possible here, too.
March 10th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Please add Princeton NJ to your Gimme Five locations!
March 10th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Would love to see this available in Orange County, CA
March 10th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Please bring this program to VA!! If you build it, they will come!
March 15th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Any plans to roll this out in your Canadian stores? Great idea.
March 19th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Gimme 5 hasn’t reached LITTLE ROCK yet, but I’ll be talking to folks! My collection is overflowing.
March 21st, 2009 at 9:36 am
Any hopes of having the Gimme 5 bin at non-Whole Food stores? We have neighborhood non-chain grocery store in Swarthmore PA (outside of Philadelphia) that has a lot of green-shoppers. They also do a great job supporting local produce and farmers. A Gimme 5 bin would be a wonderful addition to the store, especially since you don’t currently have anything in the Philadelphia area.
March 21st, 2009 at 11:19 am
Hello there, I would LOVE to see this program made available at your store in Reno, NV. Any idea how long it will be until this will be available here? I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to mail my #5s to the Cortland, NY, address, but a local drop off point would be extremely convenient – and I know there are many others in the Reno/Tahoe area who would also take advantage of a local recycling opportunity. THank you for listening!
March 21st, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Our Memphis, TN store is currently only recycling #1 and #2 plastics. I would love to support the Gimme 5 project. I think that it could bring an enormous amount of awareness to our community and city.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:46 am
I would love to see this in one of the two Philadelphia stores–either at 2001 Pennsylvania Ave or 929 South St. Actually I’d love to have it at both, because I go to both, but I know I can’t get everything! Thanks for starting this program, hopefully soon I will be able to buy more yogurt without sacrificing a clear conscious.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
We need more #5 recycling, but then we also need to educate people that their typical recyclers do not recycle #5 items. Most people believe that if they put it in their bins, it will be recycled. More Whole Foods should team up with Preserve, even if it’s not cost effective, because it’s the right thing to do for our planet & our futures. Then Whole Foods should add it to their websites so concerned citizens know where to go. I just heard from one of your stores that they don’t have a Preseve bin, but that if we bring in our #5’s in a bag, they will give it to their trash & recycling hauler. But that hauling company only passes those items to their recycler, who only throws #5’s in with their trash. So people’s efforts are wasted. Education is the key!! Only then comes change.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Would love to see this in Atlanta.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:24 am
This is great! I plan on using this at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Does this include everything marked with a #5? Such as plastic cups, take-out food containers, etc? Or just small yogurt and similar containers?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Hi Karen, the program includes all #5 plastic items.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Yes, Rebecca is right. We need this program in Reno, NV!!!!!
April 8th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I am SO excited to see this. My friend told me about it and I thought it was too good to be true. It has killed me slowly to throw out all the #5 plastic containers, but my local Whole Foods store is on the list so I can end the suffering!! Yay!
April 15th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Please bring the Brita filter recyling to the Toronto store!!
April 16th, 2009 at 10:39 am
I would love it if you would expand the Brita and other plastic recycling to your Washington State stores, specifically my local ones in downtown Seattle and the Roosevelt District.
April 19th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
I’m with Holly. Bring it to Seattle. You know the NW will recycle.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:57 am
I just found out about this when I picked up the April calendar at Whole Foods today! I am so excited. I placed a box in my office so my coworkers could bring in their #5s to recycle!

[...] Recycle anything possible (including #5 yogurt cups and Brita filters) [...]
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Could you please let me know when Gimme 5 is coming to Southern California (in particular, the Los Angeles area). Is there a list of “future locations”. I am saving my #5 plastics but am trying to decide whether to mail them in or wait until I can drop them off. Thanks! Is there an info sheet I could print out and give to the customer service desk at my store so they know what to do to get the program started? Thanks, again! Great program!
April 23rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm
I have been saving my yogurt, cream cheese, and margerine tubs for years rather than throw in the trash since we don’t recycle them in San Diego, just waiting for recycling to catch up with this. I would love to see my local San Diego Whole Foods market start taking these!
April 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I hope the Whole Foods Market in Pasadena, CA will be added to the Gimme 5 program soon.
April 26th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Please, please put a Gimme 5 box in the Short Pump, VA Whole Foods. I have a box of #5 plastics waiting for it.
April 26th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Hope this makes it to New Mexico!! Only 1s and 2s are collected here.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I am happy to see a place to send #5 plastics. I am disappointed to see that there are not stores in the Atlanta, GA area to accept them. Please add the GA stores! Until then, I will mail them.
April 30th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Please add this program to the Jenkintown, PA store! I’m estatic that there is a place for #5 plastics. I’ve been accumulating them and have more containers than I need, but don’t want to throw them in the landfill. Thanks!
May 5th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Please bring a bin to the Lansing, MI area PLEASE I am flooded with #5’s. Thanks, Cindy
May 9th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Please bring to Lexington, KY…I’ve recently become a recycling fanatic and would LOVE to save more from my trash!
May 11th, 2009 at 10:03 am
Come on WF’s-get it into the Princeton, NJ Store!
May 13th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Charleston, SC needs Gimme 5 — Please! We’re fortunate to have Whole Foods, but we would really appreciate a #5 outlet other than Lowcountry marsh, vital rivers and our amazing Atlantic ocean!
May 20th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I would like to see this program in Oak Park, IL.
May 25th, 2009 at 7:44 am
These plastic containers are not recyclable in NYC and there aren’t any convenient drop off locations available. I’m so happy that Whole Foods is starting this program! However, the Chelsea location, where I shop everyday, currently does not collect. Please add it to the list!!! Thanks!
May 27th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I would love to see the Gimme 5 program initiated in your Greenville, SC location!
May 27th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
I would like to see the princeton, NJ store put on this list. I would LOVE to have a place to recycle #5’s!!!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I would love to see the Gimme 5 program at my local stores in Washington state: Bellevue and Redmond. We are lucky and cann recycle #5 tubs in our area, but not lids. Thank you for supporting this program!
May 30th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
I love the Whole Foods in Jenkintown, PA, but I’m disappointed by its exclusion from this program. Please bring the Gimme 5 program to PA!
May 31st, 2009 at 10:52 am
Please include Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland locations. DC and Nova/MD residents are hip to recycle!
June 1st, 2009 at 12:29 pm
I’d love to see this program in the Cincinnati store! We don’t have #5 recycling in our community..
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 am
Wonderful program, long in coming. However, what is stopping Whole Foods from offering it through ALL its stores? I live in KY close to OH, and yet neither state is on the list. Yet our local main recycler, like most, does not take plastic from other that #s 1 & 2. Hence my concern. I realize this is a new program and hopefully it will expand across the country, but I think it would behoove Whole Foods to offer it everywhere, not just in the most environmentally-conscious areas. Please consider.
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:19 am
Pls start to recyle #5’s at your OH stores, specifically the University Hts. store. It would be such a convenience.
Thank you.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm
We need this program in the Philadelphia area. Please begin a program here. I would especially like to see it in Jenkintown.
Thanks.
June 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 am
Are there any plans to expand the excellent Gimme 5
recycling to the Princeton, NJ store? I would certainly
use it.
June 4th, 2009 at 9:54 am
I live in Pemberton NJ and would shop more at Whole Foods if they recycled #5. I love the store but don’t make the trip just to buy groceries. If there was a recycling advantage, I’d make the trip.
Thank you,
Avis Anderson
June 11th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
We are happily saving our #5s while waiting for the program to arrive in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina.
June 21st, 2009 at 3:40 am
It just kills me everytime that I get plastic containers that can’t be recycled. I was excited to read about this program — then disappointed learn that it’s not in Columbus OH yet. Bring it on! We’re more than ready.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Hi I live in Greenville SC and I assumed that the Whole Foods on Woodruff Rd accepted #5 plastics in the recycling bin outside the store. Was I wrong? If so, what plastics can I recycle in that bin? I asked an employee inside the store and they didn’t know. Thanks
July 1st, 2009 at 11:58 pm
@J Different cities and municipalities accept different kinds of plastics for recycling. Most commonly, only #1 and #2 are accepted.

July 6th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
come to Pittsburgh!!!
July 6th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Atlanta area please, thanks!
July 7th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I would love to see the Preserve Gimme 5 program at the Whole Foods Store in Lexington, Kentucky. We have a very good city-wide recycling program (but only #s 1 & 2), so people are/are learning to recycle. I would love to be able to recycle #5s!
July 7th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Love to see a program in Cincinnati.
July 8th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
This is great! I love yogurt and it is disappointing to me that I cannot recycle the containers in Virginia. I hope to see the program in the Arlington, VA store soon!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:04 am
We’ve had trouble getting recycling to be a permanent program here in New Orleans. It would be really nice if the Arabella Station Store could get a more all-encompassing recycling program to help us out until the city can handle the service itself!
July 13th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
Hooray for Whole Foods! Please expand this to include at least one store in Albuquerque, NM. I know one woman who it taking about 25 pounds of #5 plastics on her vacation to Chicago so she can drop it off at a Whole Foods that is participating in this program! Help those of us in Albuquerque recycle more!
July 19th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Any plans to recycle the styrene containers used for berries and lettuce packs? They are number 6 in the system.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Please encourage the Whole Foods Baton Rouge, LA store to participate in the “Gimme 5 Recycling” program!
July 25th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
The Whole Foods stores in Albuquerque, NM do NOT participate in the Gimme 5 program. So I’ve collected 48.5 pounds-worth of #5 plastics in the last 2 months, and I’m driving them to Charlottesville, VA tomorrow for recycling. It would be great to see the Gimme 5 program in ALL Whole Foods stores!!
August 4th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Sure wish we had this in AZ!
August 16th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
This is a great program and I hope it is working well. Please bring it to the Cary, NC store. Our family has a huge yogurt addiction and need a recycling option for all the #5!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:21 am
I also live in North Carolina, and would love this program to come to Raleigh, Cary or Durham. I am excited by the initiative, and am considering saving the containers I have and accumulate until a trip to Tampa in November (who needs clothes in my suitcase when I am doing my part to save the planet). Thank you for filing this need!
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Thanks to WholeFoods Indianapolis locations..for participating in the program….its awesome..and it gives me a reason to drive and shop at Whole foods
August 26th, 2009 at 10:15 am
This is a fabulous program! Where is the store in Reston, VA (Green Mission Team Leader) that is mentioned. I live in NOVA and would love to minimize my waste by dropping off all my #5 recyclables at a local facility. Thanks.
August 28th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Please set up a gimme 5 location in Albuquerque!
August 29th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Please bring Gimme 5 to the Greenville, SC Whole Foods store. I have a bag of yogurt containers ready to drop off. I know of others doing the same thing. Please let us help prevent these from going into the landfills!!
September 1st, 2009 at 7:57 pm
We NEED Gimme 5 Recycling in Durham, NC! The city cannot recycle #5 containers, and the Durham store sells tons of them! Please help us!

September 7th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
I would like to see number 5 recycled in the San Diego area. There is a Whole Foods store that I shop at in La Jolla which would be great! I’d like to know what they make with the recycled plastic.
I also want to know if the GJimme 5 program takes straws and plastic silverware. I have read that they are often number 5 as well.
I would like the kids at the local schools to get involved, so please tell me if you will start a Gimme 5 program in La Jolla (and if so, when).
Thanks,
Rhonda
September 14th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Please bring Gimme 5 to the Cincinnati Whole Foods. Currently we can’t recycle 5s in Cincinnati currently. Hope to see it soon!
Thanks,
Christine Bernhard
September 15th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Please start the Gimme 5 program at the Whole Foods in Durham or Chapel Hill, North Carolina! There is no place to recycle #5 plastics anywhere! It hurts so bad to throw all the #5 plastics away in the trash because there’s no place to put them!
Thank so much!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Please bring this program to Albuquerque. There would be lots of participation.
October 1st, 2009 at 12:30 pm
We need this in the Kentlands store in gaithersburg MD!!!!
anybody out there know where to recycle your hairdryer in maryland?????
October 18th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Hi there – I have so many #5 plastics that i would like to see recycled. Ft. Collins – please consider a Gimme 5 program….please??
October 19th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Awesome program! So excited that you offer #5 recycling. Keep up the good work!
November 1st, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Please add San Diego / La Jolla to the list! We eat a lot of yogurt!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
I would love to have the Tucson stores included in the #5 plastic recycling program. I never realized how many kinds of containers are made from this plastic. I would be happy to be able to take them somewhere.
December 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I’m also very disappointed that no Colorado Whole Foods store is n the list of particiating locations. That’s a shame! Please add a Denver, CO store soon! Many thanks, Bibi
December 5th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I am so glad that I will be able to take my #5 plastics to Whole Foods! I kept having to throw away all of the #5 stuff that we use instead of recycling because there was just no where near me that did anything with it.
This is a wonderful program! Kudos again to Whole Foods.
Crystal
December 14th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
[...] you know that Whole Foods takes back #5 plastics for recycling? They send them off to some company who uses them to make razors and toothbrushes. We’ve been [...]
December 14th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Awesome!!! I have boxes and boxes of the stuff and I would like to be able to recycle it in Las Vegas, NV.
I also have collections of PVC, LDPE, and PS, if something could be done about that too =)
December 19th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
we have toner cartridges that have soy toner and say number 5 on the bottom- are those recylable at whole foods?
December 23rd, 2009 at 10:39 am
Seattle, WA has recycling, food waste, and yard waste composting programs for just about everything, but not for Brita filters yet. It is one of the few things still left in my garbage. I would love to see this program get up and running in Seattle.
December 28th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I didn’t see the Marietta HFM on the list of locations for #5 plastic recycling. It would be popular. Not only are yogurt and cottage cheese containers type #5, but many fast-food drink cups are as well.
December 30th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
This is so awesome! Thank you!!! I’d like to add the following stores:
Fair Lakes/Fairfax, VA, and
Charlottesville, VA
Thanks again!
January 4th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Hurray!!!! My cupboards were being overrun by my “green” conscience!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! My grand-kids thank you, too!!
P.S. Thank you for providing preferred parking for us “greenies” that drive fuel efficient vehicles, too… Let’s keep spreading the awareness….
January 5th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Seattle stores should be leading the way with this wonderful Gimme 5 project. There are now 3 seattle stores and last month when i called all of them, none had a Gimme 5 drop off bin. in fact, most of those on phone at the stores didn’t know what the heck i was talking about. not cool!
if Alabama stores can have this, Seattle sure should!
And, maybe this Action Project could help us lobby the prescription medicine bottle makers to STOP making containers from such brittle plastic. why don’t we just switch to something like tylenol bottles that are easily recyclable? time for a plastic revolution across the board!
January 23rd, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Would be so great to have this program in Raleigh, NC!
January 25th, 2010 at 9:00 am
We have no place in Santa Fe, and it seems in all of New Mexico, for recycling #5 plastics. Sure would be great to have the Gimme 5 program come to our city and state!
January 28th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
It is fantastic that you’re doing this. Thank you. Will you please encourage the Santa Fe, NM store to participate?
Thanks again.
January 28th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Would love to see this at our Whole Foods in Santa Fe, NM! I eat a LOT of yogurt and cot. cheese.
January 28th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Please, Whole Foods in Santa Fe New Mexico, we need this Gimme 5 program! Thanks!
January 29th, 2010 at 11:07 am
This sounds like a great plan! We would love to have it here in Santa Fe, NM!
January 29th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
I am very surprised to see the Union Square NYC location on the list of participating stores, since the *very small* bin was only out sporadically and I haven’t seen it in months.
Now after reading Trevor’s comment [February 19th, 2009 at 10:33 am], I understand that it was moved to the customer service area. I will stop in to check this out when I am next in the neighborhood. But like Trevor, I find this completely unacceptable: if the bin is not included in the area with the other recycling bins, there should be at least a sign indicating that one exists and where to find it. The customer service desk is out of typical customer traffic flow, and any bin placed there would not be noticed by most visitors to the store. Even when there was a bin, it was so small — much smaller than the other WF recycling bins — that sadly I often left my #5s in a bag in the general vicinity before giving up completely on the practice.
The volume of #5 containers in this city and the desire of residents to recycle rather than trash them are by no means WF’s problems to solve. But the hide-and-seek methodology at the Union Square store does not improve the image of a brand that is perceived in NYC to only give lip-service to bettering the environment.
January 30th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I would love to see the Santa Fe, New Mexico store start recycling #5 plastic. Thanks!
January 31st, 2010 at 7:31 am
I’m so happy to discover this program for Preserve Gimme 5. I discovered it through the Stonyfield Farms website. Hopefully this will expand to all Whole Foods stores but beyond to other grocery chains. It is a movement and direction which our society must head instead of putting endless amounts of more plastic in our landfills which will probably not decompose at all for hundreds of years let alone all the chemicals from plastic leaching into the ground and making us all sick.
Also, I have a question. Most plastic tops now for #5 containers like butter, cream cheese, etc. say that the tops are #2 plastic. Should these #2 tops be recycled separately from their #5 tub-like containers or can people send the whole container (#5 container and #2 top) to Preserve Gimme 5 or put them in the bin at participating Whole Foods stores? Thanks. I look forward to your answer.
January 31st, 2010 at 11:56 am
My cat litter comes in a #5 container – Can I recycle those as well?
February 13th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Yes. Please extend the program to WA. I was dispointed that I did not find any store in WA participate your program. I’ll same my Brita filter until I the program is extended to Washington. At least in the city of Seattle and Bellevue.
February 17th, 2010 at 12:46 am
Thanks for taking the first steps with this program, now it needs to expand to other areas such as Southern California. There are a lot of people here who are ready to recycle their #5’s and just need a place to make it happen. I regularly shop at the WF in San Diego and would love to see the bins show up there. I plan on stopping by the customer service desk the next time I’m in and discussing it with them. Thanks again!
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Please please please bring gimme 5 to a San Diego, CA location! We have to make this happen! Our planet (and those walking on it) needs to be GREEN!
February 27th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
Hope the Gimme5 program comes to Tucson and to Denver soon. We are using Preserve plates for my daughter’s wedding in Denver this summer. Reasonable, eco friendly, and fun!
March 1st, 2010 at 4:04 pm
This is a great program! Please, please, please bring this to San Diego and the rest of SoCal!
March 2nd, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Just talked with the staff at Whole Foods at 28th and Burnside in Portland, OR today, 3/3/10. Gimme 5 is slated to be unveiled here 3/15/10. Thanks to Preserve and Whole Foods and all partnering companies for taking this important step. And thanks to all here in Portland and throughout the planet for doing what you can to make a difference!
March 4th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PILOT THIS PROGRAM IN CANADA (VANCOUVER)!!!!
March 6th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
I appreciate you starting the “Gimmie 5″ but your website is wrong. I went to your Arlington, VA Whole Foods 2 weeks ago, which your website links to a participating “Gimmie 5″, and the employees and manager had no idea what this was, nor did they actually have a place to recycle this.
Please either correct the links saying that the Arlington, VA Whole Foods accepts “Gimmie 5″ recyclables or place a container in the store.
March 19th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Hi Christine, our apologies for any confusion regarding the Gimme 5 program. I’ll reach out to the folks in our Arlington store to see what’s up.
March 23rd, 2010 at 9:27 am
We need Gimme 5 in Venice, CA 90291. I work in the medical industry and would love to tell people where to recycle their prescription bottles
March 30th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
This is an awesome program! Can’t wait until it comes to our store in Seattle!
April 4th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Tucson, Airzona….I just read this and then looked at their site, I don’t see this on there. I will ask them next time I go but if they don’t have it, then I vote TUCSON
Great Idea

[...] Whole Foods is now a star player in an innovative program called Gimme 5. Thanks to Gimme 5 we all have a way to move our plastic #5s from our waste bins to our recycle bins. [...]
April 5th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Whole Foods just opened in my area of Long Island, NY. I am pleased that I can recycle all of my #5s (lots of yoghurt containers and Brita filters) and think that this is a great initiative!
April 7th, 2010 at 7:10 am
I have a pet peeve and suggestion for the above recycle program: back ‘in the day’ I remember bringing containers, even when I lived in the Orient [about 13 years worth] of bringing in containers to be REFILLED.
We have the longest surviving containers being used the least amount of time. Soap, and other non digestable items are distributed into containers that are thrown away [if not recycled]. IF thrown into a fill or such, it’ll last over 100 years for not degrade types or less for those that do degrade.
SUGGESTION: WHy not, cut down on the packaging to include boxes and such and just ship a container, thinking 55gal drum, of the stuff, and you bring in your long, lasting container that originally dispensed the stuff and refill by the pound/weight?
Cuts down on storage and other items. Honestly, we fill up our gas tanks with easy, can we not also do this for soaps, shampoos, dog food etc.???? we do have the bulk concept down.
Just possibly, we have as humans progressed up a notch….
PS: I’ll be glad to fill up my beer and wine by bulk too
, [<-- ok, that latter is a joke, but not the previous]
April 15th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
Can I recycle #5 plastic bottle caps with this program? I hear some places don’t accept them because they’re so small they can jam machinery, but I’m hoping Preserve accepts them and I can recycle them in the Gimme 5 bin at my store.
April 21st, 2010 at 8:53 am
I have reached out to my Whole Foods store in Tucson and they have yet to offer #5 recycling. Please help to make this happen in Tucson.
April 21st, 2010 at 2:43 pm
I love the program. And I go out of my way to use the Whole Foods in Union, NJ, because of their #5 recycling bin, as well as several other earth-friendly programs that aren’t available in other WF stores. Thank you, Union store!
May 8th, 2010 at 8:47 am
It would be very much appreciated if the “Gimme 5″ recycling program came to the Hillcrest, San Diego store. I am absolutely confident that everyone would participate all of the time. It is such a great idea. Please offer the service here. Thank you.
May 12th, 2010 at 12:12 am
PLEASE get this going in the stores in San Diego, CA! PLEASE!!

Another vote for Venice 90291. We’ve been saving Brita filters for years waiting for this! Also, it would be really great to get Trader Joe’s in on this program- they seem to be lagging behind on the ‘reducing plastics in their packaging’ front, but at least now have a conspicuous reusable shopping bag program in place (actually much more visible than what I’ve seen at Whole Foods). Keep up the good work!
June 3rd, 2010 at 8:15 am
Thank you so much for putting this in place. I’ve been hanging onto my Brita filters for years, waiting for somewhere in America to be able to take them!

June 10th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
BRING THIS TO ROCHESTER, NY!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!
June 23rd, 2010 at 11:00 am
I am very interested in this program however the nearest Whole Foods Store is 2 hours away. Right now I am saving my plastic #5’s to take down there but the emissions I am leaving behind by driving is not good. Could you consider having a drop box in the Woodman’s Grocery Store in Appleton WI.
Thanks
June 29th, 2010 at 8:51 am
Please bring Gimme5 to the Whole Foods store in Tustin, CA.

I have a question: Where do the #5 recyclables get sent? If they are shipped via jet to Guam, then it isn’t a very efficient method, correct? It would be great to receive some clarification on this issue. Thanks so much for offering this. I hate throwing away #5 plastic! Kathy
August 16th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
I’d really like to see this program expanded to Tucson, AZ. We have 2 Whole Foods stores here now. I asked about the program at my local store and it hadn’t even been heard of. But I’m saving my #5 plastics in anticipation. I totally support recycling. Thank you.
August 26th, 2010 at 11:54 am
Would LOVE to have a Preserve Gimme 5 at ANY of the Southern CA locations to service the over 12 million residents in Los Angeles, not even including the surrounding cities. Please, please, please spare at least one #5 recycling in any of your 29 SoCal stores!!!
August 30th, 2010 at 4:36 pm
please get the Whole Foods store that is located at 1700 California Street in San Francisco, on board with this program.
please also inform the garbage companies of every city that has this program available so they can inform their customers.
San Francisco is the ONLY CITY that has mandatory recycling and composting, yet they did not know about this program.
knowledge = power, and we need to become a garbage-free planet, starting now!
IF YOU KNOW WHERE I CAN RECYCLE DENTAL FLOSS, PLEASE TELL ME!! Thank you. Dental floss is my garbage.
September 23rd, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Sincerely,

Please bring the Gimme 5 program to San Diego!!! For such a big city, I’m surprised there is no where to recycle these plastics. I’ve been saving my #5s and Brita filters so hopefully I can recycle them somewhere soon.
October 28th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
San Diego’s Whole Foods locations need to start Gimme 5 too! I mail my Preserve brushes back but would much rather drop them off at the grocery store. Hillcrest and La Jolla locations would be close enough for me to make the trip, plus how about Henry’s too since they’re owned by you guys now right? I live in Chula Vista and our Henry’s is the only health food store within 2 miles of my house, and the next one is about 7 miles away! That may not sound bad but living in LA I was used to having multiple choices within walking distance lol…

November 12th, 2010 at 11:09 am
I just started with recycling and they do not make it easy for you. Too many stipulations with it. To me paper is paper. Plastic is plastic. I can’t believe that it’s not easier to recycle #5 plastic material since most plastic product containers seem to be that type. The only town in Ky. that is in this program is Louisville. ??? Why not Lexington?
January 9th, 2011 at 9:16 am
PLEASE PLEASE can we get the Whole Foods stores in San Diego (Hillcrest and La Jolla) to take part in this program? It is scandalous that we have to throw away these plastics. The stores should either stop selling the products that use #5 plastics (which will never happen) or get this program in the store. I am stockpiling all of our #5 plastics in hopes this will happen soon!
January 13th, 2011 at 11:03 am
Great program!
Let’s not forget those of us in So. California.
There is a huge demand. We would like to see Gimmie 5 at the Chino Hills Whole Foods location.
Thanks for your efforts!
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:37 pm
Very excited about this program. Is it in all Whole Foods now? Because the links take you to the general store search & I can’t find any store-specific Gimme 5 info on your website. (I’m in NYC.)
February 4th, 2011 at 8:33 am
I would like to suggest our swap/reuse site to you. ecofreek is a site meant to promote the reuse of items as opposed to throwing them into landfills. If you are interested please let me know what you think!

February 25th, 2011 at 3:37 pm
Awesome!
It would be great to have this program at the Whole Foods in Cincinnati, OH.
March 5th, 2011 at 11:13 am
I hope they are in the Austin, TX stores! Those are the closest to where I live and I would love to see them there!
March 6th, 2011 at 6:13 pm
The North Raleigh (NC) store just opened. It is not listed on the link to the Preserve site as a site that recycles #5 yet. If it is recycling then the list should be updated; if it is not recycling I would like to see that it started.
March 17th, 2011 at 11:57 pm
A recycling bin in a LA store would make a lot of sense, so many people and so many that are proactive with the whole going green thing, I don’t see why there isn’t one here yet.. I have about 10 filters, and I hate to throw them in the trash, but I can’t find a recycling center.. Please, one soon! just one!
March 22nd, 2011 at 8:31 pm
@Kelley: As much as we would like to, we don’t have the capacity to collect and manage all recyclables. However, i’ve found some recycling centers in Los Angeles for you on google: http://cot.ag/fJElzZ
March 23rd, 2011 at 9:51 am
You have a very catchy name for the program, this is awesome! Are there plans of moving to other plastic types?
March 24th, 2011 at 8:45 am
@Andrew: The reason the program focuses on #5 plastics is because most local recycling centers don’t accept them. They do, however, accept many other types. You can find more information on their website: http://www.preserveproducts.com/ THANKS!
March 24th, 2011 at 9:11 am
Just want to let your readers know that the Mid-Atlantic region has opened up its own Recycling Center next to the distribution center. We are averaging 700 tons of Occ and plastic a period along with composting and pallets that we also recycle. We are very excited about what the future holds for us and maybe getting this started in other regions.
Thank You
Larry Tyler
Recycling Center ATL.

This is fantastic news about recycling #5 products. I’m from Ontario where they recycle plastics #1 through #7, so I am thrilled about not creating more garbage. Keep it up.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:49 am
a fantastic program! i just learned a recycling service is included with the garbage pick up which is included in my rent each month. am super stoked! did learn they do not take #5 plastics. will totally take advantage of this pilot program at my local whole foods in rochester michigan. awesome program! will be so beneficial! thank you whole foods and gimme 5!!! PLEASE EXPAND IT!!!!
April 21st, 2011 at 1:32 pm
This is great! Please approach Wegmans about doing this. They are a large Northeastern chain. I’m in Rochester where there is no Whole Foods. The amount of food that comes in #5 plastic is mind-boggling and so frustrating that I can’t recycle it.
April 24th, 2011 at 4:36 pm
I shop at the Whole Foods Gateway location in Austin TX. Would it be possible to put a Preserve Gimme 5 recycle bin at that store?
April 30th, 2011 at 3:45 pm
We yearning much more individuals might defeat websites such as this which are in fact useful to study. With the nonsense going swimming about the spider’s internet, it’s uncommon to appear on the location such as your own rather.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:16 am
Hi there! This program is unbelievable! I would really like to see this recycling program start at the Whole Foods in Thousand Oaks, CA. I’m sure Thousand Oaks High School would do fundraisers to help the program initiate. Thank you so much!
May 30th, 2011 at 9:17 pm
Please add the #5 recycling to Whole Foods store in El Segundo, CA.
Thank you for making the planet better for the future!

July 23rd, 2011 at 5:26 pm
This is great news. The more plastic recycling we can achieve the better
July 28th, 2011 at 6:03 am
Has anyone seen the new one pound bacon package that is a #5 recyclable? What a fantastic idea! The old style of bacon board is not recyclable. It gets all soggy and ends up in a land fill. Thousands of tons of material going into our landfills–so sad.
August 18th, 2011 at 5:08 pm
I’m a big fan of preserve products and everything the company stands for.( I love your tooth brushes). I just really hope in the near future Whole Foods in the San Diego area begins to collect #5 plastic. I have friends and family that have cut down on buying products that are package in #5 plastic, but sometimes we get one and I have no way of disposing it responsible. I would really like any information about possible getting an Gimme 5 Recycling bin at whole foods in San Diego. Thanks.

I think your list needs to be updated. I asked where to recycle brita filters at the Whole Foods in Rockville, MD. I was told that they no longer participate. Very disappointing! You should look into working with My Organic Market. They are truly and environmentally conscious company, and a great place to shop!

Can you please tell me if this program is still active, and what stores it is at? I just tried the one listed in Virginia, and they said that they don’t take it.
Thanks!

Gimme 5 recycling is one of the ideal way of protecting the environment as well as benefiting the people. I do like the idea that you can replace your #5 plastic products with much more safe and preserved products. Many will surely support this act.

@Kari So sorry you’ve had some frustration trying to drop off your recycling. Each store does things a little differently but the link below to the Gimme 5 website shows that Virginia stores should be active. However, for the best, most accurate information I encourage you to reach out to Gimme 5 directly to see which locations are active. Thank you for reaching out!
