After four days of running between panels, keynote speakers and core conversations during the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) Conference, I was exhausted and needed refuge from the madness of the Austin Convention Center.
Thankfully, I’d received an invite to the Austin360.com SXSW Food & Wine Blogger Bash, sponsored by Whole Foods Market and Go Texan and hosted at our flagship store’s wonderful Lamar Culinary Center. Little known fact – I started with Whole Foods Market as catering staff for the Lamar Culinary Center, so I know the place well and was very pleased with how the cooking school space was transformed to house not only a foodie meet & greet, but also wine tastings from the GO TEXAN wine program and demonstrations from two of the best chefs in town – Tyson Cole from Uchi and Jesse Griffiths from Dai Due Supper Club.
Some highlights of the night:
During his demonstration of a fabulous herb stuffed flounder, Jesse explained that flounder start off like most fish with eyes on either side of their heads and over their lifetimes, one eye migrates over to sit adjacent to the unmoved one!
Tyson Cole demonstrated how to prepare rice balls (or in his words “primitive sushi”), though there was absolutely nothing primitive about the amazingly delicious dish he created.-
GO TEXAN sponsored a blind wine tasting comparing four Texas wines (all under $20) with their price comparable counterparts from around the world. The surprise of the night? The Texas wines were all unique, tasty and reasonably priced!
In addition to the food and wine provided by Jesse, Tyson and GO TEXAN, the Lamar Culinary Center also provided a beautiful spread of locally inspired appetizers including my personal favorite – tomato tatins (“Sliced Texas hot house tomatoes atop country-style bread spread with fresh Texas basil pesto and drizzled with olive oil.”) and a fine selection of Texas beers and wines.
The company was delightful, the weather was spring perfection and I was very happy to meet Jodi of Tasty Touring, Rachel and Nichelle of Cupcakes Take the Cake, Teddy from Fun With Your Food, Addie of Relish Austin and many other awesome bloggers!
All of our guests left with an amazing Better Bag filled with goodies including 365 Everyday Value Pita Chips, Sweet Leaf tea, Alaffia shea & coffee body lotion, an Austin360 tee-shirt, a GO TEXAN wine carrier and more! We gave away one bag to a lucky Twitterer at SXSWi who posted a picture of what they had for dinner and now, we’d like to give you, our wonderful blog audience, a chance to win one too!
Simply post a comment on this entry between now and Friday March 27th and we will select one at random to receive the coolest schwag bag ever.

What a fantastic idea for an event! Cooking affordable, healthy and tasty meals is a daily challenge. Thanks for linking to the bloggers who share some great ideas.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Can those Texas wines be purchased at WF stores outside of Texas?
March 25th, 2009 at 8:19 am
I am very familiar with SXSW, having lived in the area, but I now live in Florida and miss that event so much! It was such a lovely surprise to see it covered in your blog and it made me so homesick! I would love to win the free goodie bag to feel a little closer to home. Texas wines are soooo delicious! My favorite winery, hands down, is Messina Hof outside Bryan/College Station. Everything they make is fantastic. Thanks for the great coverage!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Sounds like this was a greta event –please have one here in the DC Area!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
What a wonderful idea for an event! My mouth is watering just thinking about all that good food…excuse me while I go wipe the drool from my chin.
March 25th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
What a feast for the senses – the ears and tongue, especially!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
As a former Austinite (and almost a lifetime Whole Foods shopper- started when I was a child in the 80s in Austin!) this post made me very homesick for Austin and SXSW, but did inspire me to try to make some rice balls! Sounds like a fun event!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Wish I could have been there. I first attended SXSW in the mid-1990s and while there visited a Whole Foods store for the first time. I fell in love!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
I hope in the future there is a giveaway for events like this–sounds like it was a lot of fun!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

It sounds like an incredible night of food & wine. I’ve just recently discovered Whole Foods in Jax, FL. It is now my favorite store! Everything we bought tasted so good, from the 365 brand to the fresh produce. Thanks!

March 25th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Whole Foods is certainly the place I go for all my organic ingredients. The Whole Foods on 6th and Lamar is so convenient for me returning home from work it is only a few blocks from downtown One American Center. Thank you Whole Foods for great food, wine, and atmosphere!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Mmmm those tomato tatins are essentially Texan bruschetta…what a fun (and delicious) twist on one of my favorite appetizers! Is there an event like this in Los Angeles??
March 25th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Wish I could get some of those cupcakes!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I am so bummed that I missed the Whole Foods event – sadly I was only able to attend the music portion of SXSW. I didn’t get a chance to try Texan wine, either, and am very intrigued.
March 25th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
now i’m hungry. good luck everybody!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

It’s my dream to get to SXSWi one of these years. I’m glad you had a great time!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Sounds like ya’ll had a rollicking good time. Also saw a Tweet from a friend of mine who said she had died & gone to heaven after seeing the Austin Whole Foods store– you must have a nice setup!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
What a fantastic sounding event. I’d love to win the bag of goodies so I could show them to friends who don’t shop at Whole Foods/Wild Oats and therefore do not know the fantastic foods available. Along those lines….the nearest Whole Foods/Wild Oats is a 150 mile round trip away! When are you going to get a store in Edmond OKlahoma or better yet Stillwater? The only store in Oklahoma is in Tulsa…Oklahoma needs at least 1 more! Peace, Cynthia
March 25th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Everything sounds so tasty. I wish I could have been there.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Looks like a lot of fun. Wish all Whole Foods would have such events.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
We have a brand new Whole Foods located down the road from where I live. It is wonderful! I love the uniqueness of it. For instance, I had never even heard of a pear tomato. Now I eat them constantly!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
I love SXSW. I miss it since I have moved from Austin. It might be worth a trip back next year.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
i’m so sad to have missed out. it must have been amazing to be up close and personal to everything.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Another SXSW gone by that I didn’t get to attend! I’m quite jealous of the food and wine tasting!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
It’s nice to hear that I’m not the only one who takes pictures of their dinners!!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
This is my shameless attempt to win a gody bag. (I do love my Whole Foods though.)

It sounds like this was a wonderful event!!! I sure do wish I could have gone to it.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
WOW I wish I could have been there to see the demonstrations. Tyson Cole is my favorite chef in Austin. I am still upset he didn’t win the Iron Chef competition- the judging was unfair (he rocked it)!
Pick me for the Better Bag!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Sounds like a blast and I’m sorry I missed it and the rest of SXSW! But we’re moving home to Austin in a couple of months, so we’ll definitely be attending SXSW next year!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Wow! Looks like a blast! If only…
March 25th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Thanks for letting me know that there are wineries in Texas!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Thin Mint Cupcakes! What a great idea for using up all the Girl Scout cookies I purchased. The cookie looks yummy perched up there in the green frosting. Thanks for the idea!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Sounds like a great time and fabulous food and drink. What is the likelihood of getting the riceball recipe? Just had Arancini de Riso this weekend and would love to compare the two.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Wish I didn’t miss that one, it would have been fun to attend. Maybe next year it will be announced on the WF web?
March 25th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Oh, the delights of good, wholesome food! The tomato tatins sound amazing. Glad you enjoyed yourself at the event. And thanks for that fact about flounder and their eyes- learn something new everyday!

March 25th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Tasty article full of interesting ideas.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Great music and fantastical food. What could be better? Oh yeah, me getting to experience both from Colorado. Sigh.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
I would love a list of the $20 Texas wines : )
It is refreshing to see foodies can find wholesome foods in Texas vs the steroetypical beef brisket barbeque’s!( Don’t get me wrong here… I am not trying to be politically incorrect) Thanks for the overview of some other Texas options!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Sorry I missed this. Now that I subscribed to the Whole Foods e-newsletter, I’ll know about it ahead of time.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
I looove Austin! Someday I hope to be there for SXSW. I try to make a pilgrimage to WF original store. Love my local store – the displays in the produce section are like works of art.

March 25th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Here are the GO TEXAN wines we sampled:
- McPherson Viognier 2007
- Llano Signature Melange
- McPherson Sangiovese 2006
- Texas Hills Orange Moscato 2005
My personal favorite was the Sangiovese.
These are available at many Whole Foods Market locations around the country. Check with your local store for their selection.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
The bash sounds fabulous Will you be doing bashes in other regions?
March 25th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Looks great! I wish I could have been there!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
the pictures are making me very hungary. i will try making the rice balls.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I’m still crackin myself up! I love the comment by Tyson describing the rice balls as “primitve sushi”! What a hoot! Also, I did not know the story on flounder having eyes on both sides of the head to start with. Thanks!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Reading this makes me homesick for Austin. I miss the food and fun of that city. SXSW is another of those great Austin events that is so uniquely Austin. And mmmmmm Texas wines. That will have to wait due to pregnancy, but its now added to my list of things to enjoy after! Now to settle on a brand…
March 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
The food and wine blogger bash looks like so much fun! I hope there are plans for other locations, like Dallas.
March 25th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
This sounds so cool! I think I need to add Austin to my travel plans. And next year, I really need to go to SXSW. For now, I think I’ll just make a trip to Whole Foods.
Cheers,
Amanda

Reading your blog made me nostalgic – for both the music and fun of SXSW, as well as the fabulousness of the Austin Whole Foods and its culinary center, where I attended many outstanding classes & events. I’m so sorry I missed this one!

March 25th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
This sounds like it was so much fun; I wish I could have attended. I love that [finally] I have a WF downthe street from me and that I can begin t shop more healthfully for myself and family. AND I can’t wait to pick up one of these adorable new bags. Even small things can help out our mother earth!
March 25th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Would love to win the bag!!!!
March 25th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I wish that there was a Whole Foods here Northern Orange County, Ca. That will be kinda cool to have one in Anaheim Or Brea^^
March 25th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
The riceballs look great – could you publish the recipe?
March 25th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Stop making us hungry–over the computer. And why not host a similar, health/gourmet food fest in Glendale or Los Angeles, CA? You will have a most appreciative audience, with such imaginative foods, recipes and beverages as you have demonstrated. California’s present economy has spurred more at-home meals. Take advantage of this.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Bring the Southwest cuisine to Chicagoland. Would love to sample and learn how to cook healthy with Whole Foods. Never disapointed my taste buds in the past.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Wow, a little green I couldn’t have been there!
March 25th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Makes me hungry to even read about!
March 25th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I know it’s name is SXSW – but could we hold it in the Denver area next time? Looks like a fine time was had by all. Now I have to stop typing and go to Whole Foods.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Cool music & yummy food…..wish i was there!

March 25th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Great event. Let me know if there something like this in Birmingham, Alabama or Memphis, Tennessee.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Cool event – Thanks!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Gosh,I am starving after reading and seeing the pics of this event. I’m heading to Whole Foods this weekend to stock up for some serious cooking. Thanks for covering the event, Winnie.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
These food events and tastings are always eye-openers. Perhaps we will have one in San Diego in the future. There are more foodies here than when I came to town twenty years ago. The restaurant climate has changed for the better.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I was raised macrobiotic, with seasonal foods par for the course(please excuse the pun)! I’ve carried this into my adult life to a certain extent, as I now eat fish, AND am an avid organic gardner, like my mother before me! Additionally, I am half Japanese, & moving to Austin *soon*(GOLLY! wish I’d been there for the event)so the info provided by this post really helped out,& I’ve now subscribed to email alerts by the chefs in the article! Thank you for giving me a heads up as to what to expect!!!=^^=
March 25th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Sounds like a great time! I wish I had gone to SXSW for the food blog angle, but I managed to listen to the audio of the panel discussion and felt like I got a sneak peak into the goings on. I hope there are more food blogger panels available at SXSW next year! If so, I’ll be there!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
The tomato tatin looks delicious – I can’t wait for fresh, local produce to be in season here in the Northeast!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
I’d love to see a demonstration like this in Columbus Ohio!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Eye migration, rice balls, primitive sushi, and Relish Austin – are you guys not laughing? That’s totally funny! Food nerds unite! Love it! Keep the great pics coming!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Conferences with Demos are the best! I wish I could have there!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
i am sooooo sick of hearing about SXSW – some of us who are broke and can’t afford such decadence could have used a party week too but you don’t see us rubbing it in the nations face. =p
March 25th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Sounds fantastic – would be a perfect event for our new Fairfax, VA Fair Lakes store! Please consider taking it on tour to other cities

March 25th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Keep up the GREAT WORK !
Love all you do for the consumer !
March 25th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
I’m going to quiz my 17 yo daughter about flounder eyes. If she gets it right, I’ll take her to WF for a treat. If she gets it wrong, I’ll still take her (and tease her while we’re there! jk).
March 25th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
I’m hungry now!
March 25th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
The food looks amazing! I know someone who has been and says it is phenomenal.

Awesome event. All the fun & food you guys had makes me feel jealous.
.
March 25th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
We’d love to host a Rhode Island event here in Little Rhody. We finally have a WF of our own and its the best – just 3 miles from my office and it has helped expand our family menus. Little Rhody wines rock and can give Texan wines a run for their grape mashin! Thanks!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
How about publishing at least some of the recipies mentioned? I’m not a wine drinker, but the food sounded fabulous!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I wish I could have atteded–everything sounds so tasty
March 25th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
We begged, whimpered and whined every time we went to the mainland for a WF to be opened in Hawaii. Last September we finally had our wish granted. Now, all we need are more events out here like SXSW and we will achieve Nirvana! (Hey, we’re already in Paradise – come visit!)
March 25th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Really found Jesse’s explaination of the flounder’s eye migration fascinating! You never know what kind of great info you will learn at a Whole Foods!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
This event sound wonderful. Could you bring one to Western Massachusetts sometime soon? We’d love it!

March 25th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Sounds like a terrific event! Recipes please! And when do we get such an event here in Santa Fe held in our new Farmers Market building?
March 25th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
I love the idea of this event including the Texas wines. I find that critics sniff at the idea of good wines made anywhere but France, California and Australia, but frankly, my favorite wines are USA wines from small wineries in less-known wine states, such as Virginia and New York State. Why not Texas wines??!
March 25th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Wines in Texas?? Who knew?
Next time you have to invite some of your favorite WF customers to join in on the celebration!!
March 25th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Thanks for sharing. I especially liked that you had links to so many different sites.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Wish I had been at SXSW–good music and from the looks of it–the food to match! Yummy!
March 25th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I agree with my fellow posters…wish the recipes could be posted online, and wish I could have been there!
March 25th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Looks like a great time! I’m so jealous I wasn’t there.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

March 26th, 2009 at 1:07 am
I’m currently at a military base in Djibouti, Africa and am constantly wishing to be at the WF back in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I love food festivals and one sponsored by WF has got to be top-notch. Wish I could’ve been there.

March 26th, 2009 at 8:14 am
anyone know where such events might be happening in the boston area? looks like this was amazing but the whole foods here in cambridge never seem to have such elaborate events.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:15 am
I knew about the flounder’s migrating eye, but find it amazing every time I hear about it! Love Whole Foods…miss the original name in New England though: Bread and Circus!
March 26th, 2009 at 8:23 am
I’ll second the nomination for this to come to Columbus, OH!
March 26th, 2009 at 8:47 am

March 26th, 2009 at 10:03 am
Please share the recipes!!!
BTW, did you know flounder is called “Emperor’s Fish” in Chinese??? There was an ancient story that the emperor had eaten half of the fish and thrown the rest back into the ocean to “feed the hungry.” And thus, it has different colors on each side.
March 26th, 2009 at 10:22 am
All sounds wonderful. I have never tried Texas wine. I will add it to my list to try. Thanks
March 26th, 2009 at 10:25 am
IT DOESN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT MUST HAVE BEEN AND DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS TO BOOT. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE EXPERIENCE WITH THE LESS FORTUNATE CROWD WHO ARE DROOLING OVER THE VICARIOUS THRILLS WE RECEIVE IN READING ABOUT IT. KUDOS TO WHOLE FOODS AGAIN.
March 26th, 2009 at 10:40 am

March 26th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Sounded like a great event!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Say – why not consider hosting similar “regional” events for food bloggers? I’ve done a grilling event at the Bellevue, WA store and the promo person wanted to do more – might be kind of fun!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
mmmm…herb stuffed flounder. Sounds wonderful. Looks like you had a blast. Would love to taste some of those Texan wines.

March 26th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
I visited Austin’s Whole Foods during SXSW. It was great!!! Delicious food everywhere and this great even. To top it off! Austin WF is by far the best location-no doubt. Whole Foods= heaven.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Always wanting to learn about how to prepare wholesome foods, especially in their season! Love brousing Whole Foods for ideas for today! Wish I could have lived where that fabulous event was held – it must have been a treat for all who attended. I’m green with envy!

March 26th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Sounds like a great time with great food. To bad I am so far away!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:20 am
I’ve been to the SXSW, and in the future would like to
see WF have some sort of a gourmet BBQ using
healthy ingredients, that way you are
paying tribute to a Texas tradition
while showing what you can do with
your products, barbeques don’t have to
be just a side of beef and sauce anymore.
March 27th, 2009 at 3:10 am
Sounds like it was a great event. I would love to see Whole Foods sponsor a vegetarian/vegan/healthy food conference or festival here in Washington, DC. I love how Whole Foods has taken leadership around important issues like health, the environment, and even animal adoptions. You have certainly set the example for other companies than want to truly be a part of their communities. Besides the great selection, it’s why I support my local Whole Foods store, despite the bite in my budget.
March 27th, 2009 at 10:10 am
great giveaway..thanks!
March 27th, 2009 at 11:23 am
The GO TEXAN tomato tatins look so delicious I’m wishing I was in Austin!
March 27th, 2009 at 11:52 am
This sounds like an amazing time. Makes me wish I lived in Texas, and I never thought I would say that! The Tomato treats look amazing!
March 27th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
I used to live in Austin and really miss all the SXSW fun! You reminded me why I still miss Austin after leaving 13 years ago.
March 27th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Just checked out Cupcakes Take the Cake link – awesome cupcakes, would love to visit their bakery!
March 27th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
With the hectic pace of everyday life upon us, I have found that the one true joy that still exists is savoring each and every bite of the freshest, most imaginative foods! We throw “boring” out the door by exploring the delightful selection at Whole Foods. When you’ve got the urge, you’ve got to splurge!
March 27th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
In growing numbers, these leaders work hand-in- glove with community partners, families, staff, and others to develop a shared vision for trans- forming traditional schools into genuine com- munity schools. ,
