under the natural cosmetics and body care ingredients you mentioned that traditional sunscreens have harmful ingredients. I am always looking for a safe yet effective sunscreen that I can wear while at our northern home on the lake. What brands do you recommend to be the most effective and ingredient safe for my children and I?
April 30th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Origins is the only company that I know of that does not use harmful ingredients in sunscreen. I was surprised when I found out about the harmful ingredients in sunscreen. Origins is great though, and it isn’t too expensive.

I am responding to Mara’s video regarding Mother’ Day as being every day!! I have chosen to shop at Whole Food, whether I am at home or on vacation, since I can count on the products being well-chosen for quality and health for myself and my family. As a mother, I am deliberately aware of caring for myself and my family in the best way possible…and I am equally aware of the best possible care of others in the world. Good to know that WF sets standards and establishes and maintains social and economic awareness for our own consumption and in response to hunger issues throughout the world. My adult daughters whop at Whole Foods in their home towns as well. It is good to know that this is moving along the generations..and for my grandbaby along the way!!

Natures Gate is really inexpensive, sold at whole foods. They have a ton of diff sunscreens that are organic, paraben-free, and certified organic. Different varieties for kids and face, etc. or google their web site.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:50 am
@trendy00betty The ingredients that we should look for in sunscreens are those that protect us from both UVA and UVB rays. They are called broad-spectrum sunscreens and are often mineral- based. These mineral-based or physical blockers reflect rays from skin with minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that immediately provide UVB and UVA protection.
In addition, look for sunscreens with added plant ingredients. Plant ingredients not only protect, but they nourish and soothe the skin with high levels of nutrient-rich botanicals. Some skin healthy botanicals nourish and protect simultaneously. Plant-based sun protector ingredients include Milk Thistle, Green Tea, Soy, Caffeine, and Carotenoids (carrot oil.)

Are there any organic sunless tanners that are known to work for those with sensitive skin? I have tried pretty much every sunless tanner out there that markets to sensitive skin. I have had some type of allergic reaction with them all. The most common reaction was an itchy bumpy rash. Someone suggested going the organic route.

Juice Beauty also makes a fabulous SPF! It is chemical free is SPF 30! I haven’t been able to find one that high in the natural category. Plus, it’s up to 95% organic! I love it. It also comes in a light shade that I use as my foundation. I think Juice Beauty is on sales now too!

Nature’s Gate is a great brand and the sunscreens work really well.

As I’ve aged, I’ve come to realize that the more make-ups and moisturizers I’ve used on face actually make my skin look worse than when I’ve gone without. I’ve been interested in trying natural cosmetics and skin care products whose first priority is “do no harm” when it comes to my skin and the environment. After listening to your podcast, I’m even more committed. It scares me that personal care products aren’t as strictly regulated. I’ll get enough formaldehyde when I’m dead, thank you very much! I’m glad to see that Whole Foods took a step forward in classifying products they found to be “premium” and set a high standard for quality and safety in personal care products they endorse.
May 13th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Great information in the podcast – it’s true; what we put ON our bodies can be just as important as what we’re putting IN them.

May 13th, 2009 at 11:29 am
The Skin Deep site is awesome. They also review sunscreens and list their top 10 and recommended common brands.

I currently use Badger because it was readily available at Whole Foods in Austin.
May 13th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
I enjoyed the interview with Mara. I could not agree with her more. Since our skin is our largest organ, we must not put harmful chemicals on it. I worry about chemical reactions and toxins absorbing into my skin! An educated consumer is the best defense.
May 13th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Since I don’t have a Whole nearby, I didn’t know that they sold a lot of organic beauty products, I will definitely go down to the city now and check it out. It bothers me to see so many brands try to jump on the natural ingredients bandwagon, just to look at the ingredients list and find that SLS or some petroleum-based product (or similarly damaging synthetic) first in the list. Talk about missing the point!
May 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Very informative. I am looking to add more natural products into my beauty regime.
May 13th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
This is great! Also use Skin Deep website. So happy to have been able to purchase Burt’s Bees Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Shampoo & Nature’s Gate Lavendar & Aloe conditioner at Whole Foods. No longer break out from some former brands. Giovanni Sunset Styling Lotion also agrees with my scalp. These I now take to my hairdresser! Wish I had listened to my Mother years ago! Never too late to make changes.
Thank you for providing so many wonderful products.

Wow I dont have a Whole Foods in my area but I do want to know more about natural products and the benefits. I have alot of allerigies and maybe the more natural products would benefit my skin alot so I am very interested in more info and now I am seeing how bad petroleum jelly is for your skin.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
This is amazing!
I completely agree with everything that was said. I have a problem with the makeup I buy in the store because I’m just too darn sensitive.
Thank you for the chance to win this!

May 14th, 2009 at 12:43 am
We should definitely look into what ingredients are in our body care products. I’m trying to incorporate more natural products into my skin care regime. Before I used to use baby oil to remove my makeup but now I use extra virgin olive oil. I’ve become more aware when buying and take time to read the labels.

I am paying very close attention to what I put on my skin. Including changing my deodorant to aluminum free.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:43 am

When you think about your skin as an organ, it is really crazy to consider soaking it with lotions loaded with chemical- this seeps right into ones blood stream, not to mention it dehydrates the skin.
May 14th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Good point Regina made. Many deodorants are loaded with aluminum and can really have adverse affects.
May 14th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Great podcast, I truly appreciate the series you have put together!
May 14th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Love the natural products that are coming on strong.
May 14th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Very interesting! It’s not something I even thought about until lately. I’ll have to watch the ingredients of my beauty supplies.
May 14th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
A natural moisturizer is so important this time of year. Really any seasonal change causes a change in your skins ph and it can easily dry out. The natural approach is so much more beneficial, thanks for carrying and promoting such products!
May 14th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
After suffering from acne and hyperpigmentation, I have become an ingredient reader. I threw away EVERY commercial product I had, my nose became as sensitive as my skin. Most commercial products are full of perfumes that my skin can’t tolerate. I’ve found that shea butter works very well for my skin, arbutin and kojic acid are best for hyperpigmentation and I could go on and on…
May 14th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Thanks for creating an all natural beauty care line. It was surprising hearing all the different chemicals that you should stay away from. Can’t wait to try some!!!!
May 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
This information is very interesting. I never considered trying all natural makeup.
May 14th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
As I have gotten older, I have started considering quality instead of cost when it comes to my personal care products. It is true that natural products are often more costly than mass produced commercial ones. IMO, it’s worth paying the $ if it means it is better for my skin, and I am not covering myself with harmful preservatives.
May 14th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I’m hideously allergic to makeup and related products, no wonder! I’ll definitely have to check into natural products, I’ve just been going au natural up to now
May 14th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
It is always great to learn more about the skin as a key organ. I believe in natural products esp in cosmetics. Preservatives are scary! Thanks for the great information.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Wow I love mineral makeup and tinted moisturizers!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Thanks for the info! I’ve started to read labels on almost everything. I’m glad we can go to stores like whole foods and not worry about what we are putting in or on our bodies. Keep up the good work!
May 15th, 2009 at 12:58 am
Choosing healthy, natural products has become difficult (if not impossible) in other stores. It is nice to know that Whole Foods not only carries the most pure products, but continues to review and update them as new information becomes available. Thank you for making shopping for body products (and everything else you carry) easy again!
May 15th, 2009 at 9:56 am
I wish natural products were less expensive! I do have a few things that are natural but I got them on sale. Thanks for the podcast!

something to think about!
May 15th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I agree with that saying too~What we put on our bodies is just as important what we put in them!
May 15th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
The podcast was interesting. However, I would like the prices of the natural products was more reasonable.
May 15th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
this podcast was kind of informative..and an eye opener…of how skin is considered the largest organ…one should take care of it
May 15th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
As I get older I’m definitely watching what I put into & on my body. I love being able to try new natural & organic products, it really makes me feel like I’m doing something healthy for myself. This podcast was amazingly informative, thanks for keeping women aware.
May 15th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
i’ve always thought natural makeup was just part of those trends but after this podcast, i should really save up for them…however, like everyone else said, natural makeup is waaay too expensive…
May 16th, 2009 at 12:43 am
Its scary to think that what we put on our skin is absorbed into our body yet there’s no required government testing for personal care products – which basically all go directly onto our skin! Thanks for this great podcast.
May 16th, 2009 at 6:32 am
Wow, very informative. Thank you.

This podcast has taught me a lot, and I am currently focused on clearing out my cosmetics that are bad for me and environment and replacing them with a whole new set of ORGANIC and NATURAL products. I know this set would be a great start to replenishing my makeup supply. I am so glad this information is out there, or I never would have imagined the kind of toxins to be found in my makeup!
May 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Organic products are great but they can be a bit more pricey, and sometimes I’ve choose the cheaper one. but I’m slowly choosing more organic products over the other because I’m starting to see the signs of aging and starting to worry about what I put on myself and how it will affect me.

I am in the beginning stages of learning and using natural
body care products! It really makes sense how what goes on
our bodies can be absorbed into them. It amazes that body
care items are not regulated like food and medicine are.
Companies can get away with so much without consumers even
knowing about it! I respect how your company has taken one
to two years checking your natural products and their
ingredients. Many thanks, Cindi

Wonderfully informative, I heartily endorse Whole Foods and am constantly turning my friends and family onto this customer-driven company. Natural and Organic is not only something for the future, it’s for NOW!

Thanks for doing the research for us so we can choose healthy products without the hassle.
May 17th, 2009 at 8:03 am
Lots of excellent information, my only regret is that so many of the naturally organic products are too high for my budget. I wish they would lower prices somewhat.
May 17th, 2009 at 8:11 am
ps Origins is a terrific product line and one that I occasionally splurge on. And anything that is animal safe and cruelty-free gets my thumbs up!
May 17th, 2009 at 8:13 am

May 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Lately i have become more cognizant with what i put on my skin because as was mentioned in the tape your skin absorbs what you put on it, thus it is important to read labels and look for natural ingredients.
May 17th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

It is very assuring to know about the extensive process that Whole Foods takes in selecting its products. It is something that hopefully more stores will pick up eventually so that more and more companies think to create products from natural resources that won’t harm the health of their customers. Thank you to the-coveted.com for sending me to this podcast!

It is always important to read all labels, especially paying attention to what deodorant you use.

May 18th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Burt’s Bees all the way!
I see more and more anti-wrinkle serum commercials every day. If just ingredients in regular moisturizers can be bad, what do you think is in anything that plumps your skin?
This is also more than just about product safety, but about revamping our dependence on physical beauty (especially the youthful sort.) I’m one to know, I once used crest Whitestrips until my gums zinged with pain. Something is wrong with that.

Hey all! Thanks for podcast. I know about parabens and CO for already 5 years and try to use non chemical products. My list of approximately 20 “NO” items is always in the wallet… Thought, I am still looking for perfect make-up products (perfect non chemical liquid foundation, mascara etc… ), creams and lotions, shampoos and cleansers I use are only without harmful elements. I only could say Thanks to WF for their beauty sections – they have Dr.Hauschka (best lipgloss), lots of choices for body care and – I was amazed – no parabens waxing kits – that’s the best thing ever! WF is a very good place, this podcast is thought so so – guys, better give us some videos, where someone would browse in your beauty sections and would explain us what new products you have. I would love it!

Good luck with your new line and your future podcasts! Thanks.

It is so difficult to find the time to research every make-up/beauty product. I’ve learned so much just by listening to the podcast. I’ve had skin cancer and will not wear makeup without UV protection. Sunscreens are difficult, too. I have been using Origins and am looking for something different.
Thanks for the info.

Resubmitting this comment correctly: Love this information and absolutely love Whole foods……as I am approaching my senior years, I am putting myself as the priority as well as taking care of my skin using natural products. Thank you for this article.
May 20th, 2009 at 4:14 am
I’m definitely more careful about chosing natural products now. Thanks! Saw this mentioned here – http://the-coveted.com
May 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
the podcast was very interesting and good to know info on sunscreens! http://the-coveted.com
May 20th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
It’s about time!
May 20th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
wow i had no idea about some of these things! this was very helpful knowing what is harmful in everyday beauty products
May 21st, 2009 at 12:32 am
I’m so glad to run across this podcast! My coworkers and I were just having a conversation yesterday about all the nasties in most cosmetics and beauty products! I’m going to send them all to this link!
May 21st, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I loved the podcast! great info..
May 21st, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Very interesting information! Coworkers and I were just talking about the nasties in cosmetics and beauty products yesterday at work – and I’ve been wanting to try mineral make-ups! Thanks for the info!
May 21st, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Thank you for doing this — I was misdiagnosed for 10 yrs by 3 diff’t doctors as having eczema, when, in fact, I have an extremely severe contact allergy to formaldehyde. I was appalled to find out it’s in so many products and now have no reactions because I avoid those ingredients, but I think those preservatives shouldn’t be allowed in toiletries…
May 21st, 2009 at 10:19 pm
before, im not into checking ingredients/contents of makeups, and other cosmetics.. now i’ll be checking the back labels.. for any chemicals that may harm my skin.. thanks to this very informative podcast.. i’ll be sharing this to my coworkers and relatives..
before, i’ve heard about “Sunsilk Shampoo” containing formaldehyde, (buhay ka pa — naglalagay ka na ng formalin sa katawan) then after doing some ingredients checking, oh my! (meron ngang formaldehyde) then they changed the cover of the product, yah.. the price is low and competitive, but i won’t risk the health of my family..
this is a big help.. thanks for the info
May 22nd, 2009 at 1:30 am
seems like a great product!
May 22nd, 2009 at 9:45 am
interesting podcast; thanks for sharing.
May 22nd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
great information. it’s hard to know what’s really in our makeup, so im glad whole foods is doing due diligence to ensure they offer the best, healthiest, and eco-friendly products. thank you.
May 22nd, 2009 at 3:46 pm
We often forget that our skin is the largest organ belonging to our bodies and 60% of what goes ON our skin goes IN our bodies… thanks for the timely information and I’m glad I listened. No more toxic chemicals for ME
May 22nd, 2009 at 5:20 pm
We’re all paying more attention to what we put in our bodies, so it only makes sense to also note what we’re putting on our bodies. Nature’s Gate makes some excellent products and I’m in the process of switching over to natural.
May 23rd, 2009 at 5:41 am
Thanks for the great info!! And the opportunity to try out natural makeup!!!! I wish we had a whole foods in our area….coming to San Luis Obispo soon???????
May 23rd, 2009 at 9:25 am
Thank you for this information. I have rosacea and have researched and tested natural products as a way of treating it.
My rosacea has improved as I move away from chemicals and fragrances.
Please enter me in the contest.
May 23rd, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I have tried natural makeup before but was not too impressed. It seemed like the lip liner didnt glide as easily. I would love to try other brands though. Maybe that is different.
May 23rd, 2009 at 10:39 pm
I was so surprised to hear that there are so many danerous chemicals in sunscreen! It’s amazing to me that, as a melanoma survivior, I have been daily slathering on sunscreen for years, thinking that I was doing a good thing to protect myself, and now I find that I may have been doing my body harm in other ways.
May 24th, 2009 at 12:59 am
I so agree with the comment on synthetic fragrances. I would love to have a text version of this podcast. Thank you.
May 24th, 2009 at 6:08 am
What an informative podcast! I just listened for the second time, writing down ingredient names. Thank you!
May 24th, 2009 at 6:10 am
It’s SO true that getting rid of artificial fragrances can make you realize how strong and OFF they are. For instance, I started to make my own laundry detergent that leaves no fragrance on the clothing once it’s dry. Now, when I smell clothes washed in pre-made detergent, the smell is so strong and overpowering that it gives me heartburn.
One note, Fleishman slurs some words, and the put odd emphasis on others. In future podcasts, I think you should take care to avoid this. It was really distracting to me. :-/
May 24th, 2009 at 6:22 am
I agree with the guest speaker that since makeup can be absorbed, natural makeup should be the way to go! http://www.mommymandy.com
May 24th, 2009 at 7:02 am
I personally like to use natural care products because I have very sensitive skin. I noticed that when I use synthetic ingredients, I break out out itch. I wish that I had access to this info years ago, but, better late than never.

I really loved this interview and how she discussed makeup and how we need to control what we put in and on our body. The skin is our bodies largest organ and it protects us for sun damage.
May 24th, 2009 at 10:34 am
And I’m glad to see how many cosmetic companies are recognizing the preference of their customers for natural, chemical-free and cruelty-free design. We often forget that the earliest cosmetics were made from those ingredients found in nature (plants and mineral ochre).

May 24th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Someone else made an excellent point too, that it is hard to find the time to research the ingredients and manufacturing of our cosmetics, let alone every thing else we purchase. However, there is so much ready information available (such as this excellent podcast) and web-lists, etc that now we DO have the convenience of instant research at our fingertips.
May 24th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Matters what we all place in our bodies? Matters natural and Chem-FREE products? Glad I read all labels too? Food, and all products too? NO TOXIC MATTERS!! Thanks for the POD!!
May 24th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
I don’t really know if there is a separate contest per blog, or if it is just one all-inclusive giveaway, so I apologize if thats how it is since different sites say that the giveaway is between Whole Foods and their blog specifically, so I am unsure if I would only enter on one blog or for each blog. Please don’t disqualify me if I am doing this wrong. Regardless, I really want to win this. I love Whole Foods and their markets are unbelievable. I am really excited that you are now taking part in one of my absolute favorite things – cosmetics & beauty!! Thank you so much for bringing us wonderful and healthy products that cover many facets of our lives.
May 24th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
i found this very informative.. i had never thought about some of the things i use the most (such as suncreen) as being harmful for my body. I would be interested in hearing more about alternative products and ingredients in every day beauty products that are harmful and the dangers associated with them.
May 24th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
I have been purchasing all natural skincare/bodycare at Whole Foods, but as of yet have not switched over to cosmetics. This has been a great learning experience for me.
May 24th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I agree with another poster that I have very sensitive skin so I too prefer natural products. So many products will make me break out and it drives me nuts.
May 25th, 2009 at 2:56 am

I have given up on makeup for the most part. After applying the makeup, I develop a slight headache and if not removed, a migraine will hit me.
May 25th, 2009 at 7:48 am
The podcast was very informative. The info will help make me more aware of what I’m seeing on product labels.
May 25th, 2009 at 8:13 am
Oops – forgot to put Mommy Mandy in my comment. Pls. delete my last one – I will repost here
I cannot believe we are exposed to 136 chemicals a day in our normal bath and beauty products! I have a vitamin d deviciency also so it is weird to hear that these chemicals interfere with vitamin d absorbsion
May 25th, 2009 at 9:22 am
I’ve never quite understood the benefits of natural/organic ingredients in cosmetics. This certainly helps me understand what to avoid in body care products!
May 25th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
I really enjoyed broadening my knowledge of natural makeup, and I adore my Whole Foods.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
The more natural of ingredients the better. I have sensitive skin and the least little thing will cause me to break out. Very informative podcast, thanks!
May 25th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
I’d love to try these cosmetics…I’m over forty and think these would be great for my skin…interesting podcast, too.
Thanks for hosting!
May 25th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
I have definitely noticed a difference in the sensitivity of my skin, since switching to mineral makeups. I don’t get as many rashes/irritations (in fact, I cannot remember the last time!) and I don’t break out like I used to.
Thanks for the podcast. Keep up the good work and the good products!
May 25th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
I really enjoyed this. I never really think about what I put on my skin, and I need to start doing this.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I’m so grateful companies are really branching out their makeups and toiletries to include organic products! Thanks to all of them!
May 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
i have been purchasing cosmetics at whole foods for years now and the quality of their products is absolutely wonderful (big fan of zuzu luxe), good to see whole foods branching out as well.. can’t wait to see what the future holds.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Wow, I didn’t even realize that Whole Foods sold cosmetics! I’m gonna check it out next time I’m there.
May 26th, 2009 at 7:51 am

May 26th, 2009 at 8:22 am
http://www.girl-woman-beauty-brains-blog.com/
i really like that nowadays, many cosmetic companies includes organic products that has less chemicals…and hypoallergenic
May 26th, 2009 at 8:25 am
This makes you aware of what you are putting on your skin
May 26th, 2009 at 8:26 am
http://www.mommymandy.com i like hearing this that organic cosmetics is sure good to ur skin…less reaction and irritation. and not to mention, it covers good….i luv mineral products
May 26th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I would love to win this.
It only makes sense that using natural cosmetics would be better for your skin then all the processed crap we’re so used too.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I’ve always liked using a simple petroleum product to protect my lips during the winter but never stopped to think it was a non-renewable resource! This podcast was pretty short but filled with nuggets. Thanks for sharing.
May 26th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
I hope more beauty company will go organic.
Thank you for the podcast I learned things everybody needs to know.
May 26th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Thankx fot the info. I presently use mineral make-up and I love it. I discovered it(mineral make-up)several years ago,but was skeptical I was dilighted to discover it worked very well. I don’t use anything else now.I’m chemical free now….. feels good.
May 26th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
And by the way,,, I’m from” fabulous over forty”. ….And I ‘m way over forty…:).
May 26th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Whoa. This is eye-opening information, to say the least. We can all learn from this interesting podcast.
I came here via fab over forty, and expected a Whole Foods commercial. But this is shortly informative and illuminating.
We need a Whole Foods here in London Ontario, now!
Good luck all.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:39 am
Different women, different skin types. The Pod Cast did touch on areas that I was already informed about, but highlighted other areas I’ve never considered. Sometimes you just have to hear it from someone else for it to sink in. Great pod cast! I hope more will follow! ;o)
May 27th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I’ve been looking to try a greener makeup but was really worried because of my skin type. This is a great podcast – it gave me tons of new information I didn’t know about. Thanks!
May 27th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
well, all my makeup now scares me, now that i know so much from the podcast–i really want to try ‘green’ makeup. Its good that i now know about whats going on my face..and why not to put it there. thanks!
May 27th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
why women don’t worry about the chemicals that they put on their face everyday is a real mystery to me. Mineral makeup makes sense when you look at it from that perspective.

May 27th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
What great advice. Thanks very much, and God bless you.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Wow, effectual and to the point. I’m a shopper at Whole Foods but never really gave their make-section a second thought. I definately plan to check it out next time I’m there!
May 27th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I’ve been looking for a natural makeup because I am prone to breakouts. I really think this would help. I had no idea about Whole Foods. There’s none in my area. Thanks for the chance to win.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:50 am
I love the selection of natural beauty products at Whole Foods. A trip to Whole Foods is a real treat for me, in every aisle.
May 28th, 2009 at 9:09 am
I was more than surprised at how lax the gov. is with labels! The sunscreen thing is scarey! Now I have yet another label to read before buying.I’m happy to have learned this & even happier that I can rest assure that Whole Foods takes some of the “stress” off of us!
May 28th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I have sensitive skin and the older I get the worse my skin sensitivity gets. I stopped wearing makeup because of the itching and the breakouts. I think now I will try the natural cosmetics. This was a very informative podcast.
May 28th, 2009 at 10:29 am
I knew that our skin was our largest organ, I just never realized just how much of what we put on our skin goes in our bodies. ICK! I was wondering what product(s) would be recommended for someone who suffers Adult Onset Acne?
May 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Great podcast! It is nice to see that Whole Foods has these guidelines for the products they carry.
May 28th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Wow this was very informative, however my children have ezcema and avoiding chemicals is very hard. I will try some of the products at whole foods any recommendations?
May 28th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Great podcast! I have a Whole Foods nearby so I’m a frequent shopper
They carry great natural skin products.
May 28th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Wow, very informative podcast. I hear the government will be reviewing legislation soon about cosmetic labels and ingredients. I hope something comes of it!
May 28th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
I’m starting to use more natural ingredients when I eat and would love to try more natural cosmetics. I also shop at Whole Foods.
May 28th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Informative podcast!
May 28th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Now I’m frightened of what I’ve been putting on my body all these years.
May 28th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
I’m glad that Whole Foods recognizes the problem with chemical sunscreens (and other ingredients). I have found that chemical sunscreen ingredients really irritate my skin, but I have had a really hard time finding non-chemical sunscreens until only recently. I commend Whole Foods for working to make products with better ingredients more available to consumers!
May 28th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
It’s pretty scary to know that there isn’t thorough testing on products we apply to our skin. We just take it for granted that they’re safe and it’s not necessarily true. I appreciate this bit of awareness. It was done in such an easy to understand way and it was to the point and not drawn out and wordy.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Why would you put something on your skin, as a POROUS organ, that you wouldn’t want IN your body?
Natural beauty products are great. Let’s keep women healthy!
May 28th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
I love both the Jurlique and John Masters lines carried at Whole Foods. Paraben and fragrance free but extremely effective.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
I use mineral make up for quite some time and I can see the difference!
Whole foods is my favorite store for organic food and cosmetics
May 28th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Wow, very informative podcast. I hear the government will be reviewing legislation soon about cosmetic labels and ingredients. I hope something comes of it!
May 28th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Makeup. There it is sitting on your skin for hours a day. It should be clean, pure and non-toxic. Natural. That’s what I want and I love buying it at Whole Foods Market.
May 29th, 2009 at 3:35 am
What product(s) would be recommended for someone who suffers Adult Onset Acne?
May 29th, 2009 at 8:22 am
Very informative! But I do wish they explained more about skin quality AFTER using mineral makeup and I never knew there was formaldehyde in my makeup wow.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:28 am
Also, as a sidenote-I know that the podcast dealt more with the health skincare effects of makeup rather than the application, but I was wondering if the mineral makeup companies are going to start rpoducing stuff for darker skinned individuals? I’ve looked high and low and tried many brands but still have a hard time finding stuff to match my red/brown skintone.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:32 am
When we take so much care to exercise, eat healthy foods, and live healthier lifestyles, it only makes sense to put products that are considered natural, safe and healthy on our skin.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:52 am
That was such an eye opening and very informative podcast! I applaud Whole Foods for providing such educational tools for consumers so they can learn and educate themselves on what is safe and healthy for themselves and their loved ones and the dangers in some products that we think are completely safe and healthy for us that in reality are not. In the past 4 months I have been passionately on a mission to green up my act and as I am finishing up with products that are traditional, I am replacing them with natural and organic products. I am talking everything from household cleaning products to healthy and beauty products. One area I have not concentrated on is my own cosmetics, and I would love, love to try this amazing Mineral Fusion Spring Blossom Makeup Kit!! It will give me the motivation to throw out all my traditional makeup and start me on a fresh path to using all natural makeup and take me one step further on my journey to greening up my act! Thanks so much for the chance to enter.
May 29th, 2009 at 11:30 am
That was really interesting, I have very sensitive skin and definitely don’t pay enough attention to what I’m putting on it.
May 29th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
This was very informative and it’s nice to know of some ingredients to look out for that are harmful. I’m new to the all natural world and will definitely be checking out this line for body care.
May 29th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Definitely have to say things to http://the-coveted.com for sending me over here. Its great to find new products that are good to us and the environment. But to have that “don’t worry about reading the label” factor knowing what’s in the product is a plus!
May 29th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
no wonder my skin gets bad with some of the ingredients in most of my cosmetics.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I am always searching for natural cosmetics because the companies are so few and small that color assortments can be lacking. Its great to see some publicity!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
I’ve really been trying to become healthier – food, working out, and so on. I really didn’t think about how artificial make up products are, looking at the ingredients, and so on. This interview was really helpful and I’m going to use this insight in my further shopping.
May 29th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
126 different ingredients in personal care products, that’s crazy!
http://www.girl-woman-beauty-brains-blog.com/
May 29th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
As a previous poster mentioned, sometimes it seems that the more products we use on our skin to look younger, the more damage we do. I applaud Whole Foods and will continue to patronize my local store to find the safest products and foods available for myself and my family.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
I did not know so many bad things were in makeup!
Thanks for enlightening me on why I need to use mmore natural makeup!
May 29th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I have been hearing more and more about chemicals entering the skin from cosmetics. I have purchased alot of mineral makeup over the last few years because I love the eyeshadows and blush, but now I am realizing that I also should choose them because they are safer.
May 29th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
http://www.girl-woman-beauty-brains-blog.com/ sent me & I’d like to win. Thanks for the info.
May 29th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Thanks for the very informative and interesting podcast!
May 29th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Thanks to http://www.mommymandy.com for turning me on to this information. Who would have guessed that there are so many nasty things in our cosmetics.
May 30th, 2009 at 12:12 am
Just returned all my previous makeup selections i stocked up on and ready to purchase Mineral Fusion or Gabriel cosmetics from Whole Food…sampled both today and love em!
May 30th, 2009 at 1:14 am
Whole foods Mineral based cosmetics rock!!!!
May 30th, 2009 at 1:18 am
This is very informative. Like they said, we care so much about what goes into our body. The same should be true for what we put on the skin. Natural all the way for me
May 30th, 2009 at 7:33 am
Very interesting and informative podcast. I’ve eliminated aluminum, but am looking for ways to get the rest of the toxins out of my daily regimen. This was extremely helpful…thanks.
May 30th, 2009 at 9:08 am
THANKS FOR THE PODCAST! IT WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL!
KNOWING THAT WHAT WE PUT ON OUR SKIN CAN BE ABSORED INTO THE BODY MAKES ME WANT TO BE MORE CAREFUL & USE MORE NATURAL PRODUCTS.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Loved the video. Very good information, we all need to know this stuff.

May 30th, 2009 at 11:33 am
That was very interesting! I am using so many beauty products and from now on I think I will be checking their ingredients more carefully…
May 30th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I’ve heard so much lately about mineral cosmetics but I have not had the opportunity to try them yet. I’d love to win this!
May 30th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I have always been a makeup and skincare junkie as well as a self proclaimed fashionista. I peruse many of the beauty magazines and blogs to always be up to date on what’s on the market and I seem to be on a never ending quest to find my own fountain of youth. Although I feel like I’m right out of college, the fact is I’m approaching 50. I’ve learned that many make ups can sometimes be very damaging to the skin in the long term. I have heard many stories of the wonders of mineral makeup and this video was quite informative. Especially in these days of financial hardship, it’s difficult to continually spend vast sums of money just to try a product once and never use it again. I’d love to win this giveaway because it would give me the opportunity to finally try products that not only look fabulous, but also prove beneficial to my skin. If I want to be fabulous forever, then I must start taking a more gentle approach to my skincare needs. Winning this giveaway would be a wonderful start.
May 30th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I’m glad that some awareness is being raised about some of the serious dangers of poor-quality makeup. People have become too complacent about their chemical intake. Skin care is important for everybody. My mother is actually very sensitive to the artificial fragrances here described.
Great Podcast, I look forward to hearing more!
May 30th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Thank you http://www.mommymandy.com for leading me to the podcast. Thank you for the information on natural ingredients in makeup. I feel confident that the products are safer for my skin and body. Excellent information!
May 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Sort of things we wouldn’t necessary want to know, but then again, glad to find out
Then you can change to better.
May 30th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
I’ve never really thought about cosmetics being harmful until recently. It’s actually scaring me a little bit.
May 30th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Thanks for an informative podcast!
May 31st, 2009 at 12:00 am
I enjoyed listening to the podcast. I have very sensitive skin – I was even allergic to the saline solution when I was tested for other allergies. I’ve been trying to change my old ways and buy skin care products without fragrance or products that will irritate my skin. I know it’s more expensive to buy organic or natural products, but in the long run the benefits outweigh the initial costs. Thanks for podcasts like these.
May 31st, 2009 at 10:26 am
Loved the post & the entire blog. Good job, I’ll be back to read a lot more often !

@book lover and naturalist – Whole Body product selection varies between stores. Our stores that have a wide cosmetics selection, like our flagship in Austin, TX have an extensive array of natural nail care products – including polish and remover. Please check with your local store about their selection. http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores Thanks!
August 10th, 2009 at 9:52 am
natural cosmetics are the way to go and we love going to whole food exploring skincare products
August 10th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Thanks for highlighting the importance of avoiding chemical toxins in health & beauty products.
August 13th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
As far as sunscreen goes, the EWG has a list of the safest and most effective sunsreen. They also rate many other personal care products leel of safety. Very enlightening, and worth checking out.
August 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
i dont like chemcals in my makeup. i just wont buy them.if women knew whats in their makeup they would not buy them.
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Not true about Nature’s Gate. A lot of their cosmetics have carcenogens in them, even though they claim to be organic, it does not necessarily mean that they are completely safe. Check out this link: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/wordsearch_free.php?hq=nature%27s+gate&go=go
If you are unable to open the link, just go to CosmeticsDataBase and type in the product you are looking for, and it will explain which ingredients are a problem. I am surprised to find out that there are a lot of products with the word “organic” on it, which are unsafe. We need to do our homework to protect ourselves.

safe sunscreen: dr. mercola makes one as does badger, sold at whole foods. origins is not the best pick. check out skindeep.org to see their database of safe cosmetics and personal care. even if they dont list your brand, you can look up any ingredients you find on your label. they are a wonderful group to support, have even studied which cell phones have the highest radiation.
