What do Bruce Springsteen, bio-diesel generators and Whole Foods Market all have in common? We will all be at Bonnaroo 2009 from June 11th – 14th! Want to be there too? Read on for info about winning tickets!
So, some of you may be asking, “What is Bonnaroo?” Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is a four-day, multi-stage camping festival held every June on a beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. The festival brings together over 120 of the nation’s top acts and emerging artists in rock and roll, jazz, Americana, hip-hop, electronica and just about any contemporary music you can think of. Every year, 90,000 attendees from all across the country descend upon Bonnaroo to witness dozens of epic performances as well as experience around-the-clock attractions and activities, including a discotheque arcade, onsite cinema, comedy theater, silent disco, beer festival, environmental and music technology villages and street theater performers to name a few.
So, why will Whole Foods Market be at a huge music festival? Well, for one thing, Bonnaroo isn’t like most other music festivals. Bonnaroo has the distinction of being the only festival in the United States to be recognized by the UK organization – A Greener Festival for their longstanding commitment to sustainability. This year, with new on-site utility sources, water initiatives and an emphasis on buying local, Bonnaroo continues to provide an amazing entertainment experience while fostering a community that cares for our planet. So far, 40% of patrons have participated in Bonnaroo’s “green ticket” program, adding a donation to their ticket orders to support the festival’s large-scale environmental efforts.
The list of this amazing festival’s green accomplishments and initiatives goes on and on, covering everything from use of biodiesel for power generators, implementation of a solar powered stage, recycling and composting containers throughout the festival, use of compostable utensils, plates and cups, and much much more! Here’s a complete list of Bonnaroo greening initiatives.
Whole Foods Market will be at the festival in a large tent right in Planet Roo, serving up healthy natural and organic treats for when you need to refuel throughout your festival experience. We’ll have good stuff like frozen fruit bars, fresh fruit and veggies, organic string cheese, gluten-free granola, vitamins and more! Our store will also feature goodies from our supporting partners: Lifeway Kefir, ONE Natural Experience, Qbel, Talenti Gelato, & Greek God Yogurt! Stop by and visit us. Our general store will be open every day of the festival from 10am – 2am.
Haven’t got a ticket to Bonnaroo? Well you’re in luck! Leave a comment on this blog post telling us your favorite festival food and you will be entered into a sweepstakes for two tickets to Bonnaroo 2009! (Travel and lodging not included.) The winner will be randomly selected and contacted on Wednesday May 27th (so make sure you get your comment in before 8am CST that day!) and will be announced in the blog on Thursday May 28th. Good luck!

May 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
This might sound weird, but I always bring seitan. Whole Foods sells two kinds I like, one in a blue box, one in a red one. It’s low-fat and high in protein. Plus, it’s pre-made, so just bring along a plastic fork and you’re good to go!
May 20th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
grilled /steamed corn on the cob (with the shuck as the handle) provided the vendor has a large selection of spices/seasonings and butta.
btw — here’s a great blog post about last year’s food at Bonnaroo from a vegetarian Nashville blogger which I enjoyed more than hearing about the music.

for me, nothing beats a festie gyro
May 20th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Every festival I’ve ever been to, there is always someone selling grilled cheese sandwiches for like a dollar. I think Whole Foods should step up the grilled cheese and come up with a few different variations and add a pasta salad or chips on the side. It’s all about “portability”!! Whole Foods should also sell HUGE pickles.. mmmm Pickles
May 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Grilled Corn on the Cob, Im soo happy The Greatest Festival on Earth has just became even greater
May 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I am so excited you are doing this! Thank you!!
As a music booking agent for the last almost 20 years I have attended a LOT of festivals with my clients and as a vegan for just as long have generally found it a challenge, the last 10 years I have also had my daughter in tow who is also vegan. When we are in the heat with little sleep we love cold things packed with vitamins, spicy foods and savory things that are easy to carry and anything we can share and stash in my bag for snacks later. At 5 she was asked to model for http://www.guayaki.com/ when they met her at High Sierra and she became fascinated with the process behind this tea. We love festivals and live one block from WFM downtown Austin, your staff knows us well
May 20th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

My favorite festival food? I want to have something ’sinfully delicious’ but that’s healthy – so once I found spiced roasted nuts at a festival I was in heaven. If no nuts – then cheezy popcorn. Then I’d need ice cold lemonade to hydrate. Oh yes, I’m a wheat grass juice nut so that’d be a real treat – and energy booster!
Glad to see that you’ll offer the veggies – we need them greenies to be balanced. People may not pick them as their favorite festival food, but once they see that they have NO other places to get nutritious live plant food they’ll ‘belly up to the bar’, believe me.
May 21st, 2009 at 10:44 am

May 23rd, 2009 at 11:52 pm
Just found out what Bonnaroo is after listening to a group from a past festival. Must have driven by every year without being aware of what was happening, while on vacation. Sounds like a great place to be, and with Whole Foods it will be even better! Best festival food? 4 days – 4 different foods? Watermelon, icy cold. Turkey legs, crispy warm. Elephant ears, crisp and sweet. Will you have Smooz? That would be cool and refreshing.

May 26th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Well, I have a couple of festival faves…
. There is also “rasta pasta” upon which we funded many Dead tours: pre-cooked pasta in a garbage bag, crushed tomatoes, sauteed broccoli, onions and zucchini – can’t beat a warm veggie pasta after a show, can you? And then you need to have a rice krispie treat to finish the meal. These are my ‘homemade’ treats. BUT, at my first Bonnaroo, I discovered a new Festival food that I make at home now – the black bean, sweet potato, spinach and cheddar cheese quesadilla. OMG, delish and nutritious too!
There’s always the standard grilled cheese, but for me it has to have pickles, tomatoes and yellow mustard, which is pretty fancy for the fest scence, but those that of us that know how to do it right, just do it right
May 26th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Gotta love festival falafel washed down with a delicious craft brew.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

May 26th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I like the free smells !!!! I normally do not eat festival food because it is typically not that healthy but more of a reason is I always question the cleanliness….people sweating over what they are making or are they really cleaning the utensils they use to prepare/cut food ?? the thought grosses me out.
I like the bottled beer !
May 26th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Favorite festival food: deep-fried twinkies with raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. One twinkie does serve a family of four…
May 26th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Well, something healthy is always good… my vote goes to an all natural ice cream with fresh fruit on top or a ice pop made of fresh fruit. Always a good way to refuel and keep that blood sugar regular. Thanks for being a bonaroo! ur great!
May 26th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

May 26th, 2009 at 12:33 pm

GIANT TURKEY LEGS… mmm, they can’t be beat! Instead of melted ice cream dribbling down my hand at a festival, I’ll take warm, greasy, turkey juice anyday
May 26th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
I used to eat my way through the fairs – cotton candy, funnel cakes, anything with chocolate, those awesome turkey drumsticks, hot dogs, fried chicken, corn on the cob, yummy ice cold lemonade, frozen yogurt, chili, mushrooms in garlic butter (oy, my weight watcher’s points!). Now I keep baby carrots with me (satisfy my crunching needs) and bags of strawberries or blackberries (which satisfies my sweet tooth). I still go for the corn on the cob and ’shrooms, and have to have the hot dogs and turkey legs too. I’m hungry just thinking about it!
