My wife is one tough customer. Guardian of our children’s health, keeper of the family budget, she is my culinary moral compass. My wife is what we call a “core customer” – keen to trends but rooted in natural living. So when a Whole Foods Market new item appears in our home fridge or pantry, I know we have a hit on our hands. And sitting there on the top shelf of the fridge last week was a 64 oz carton of So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk.
Most of us know So Delicious/Turtle Mountain because of their coconut and soy-based frozen desserts and yogurts, which have revolutionized dairy-free and soy-free diets. And now these creative minds have done something cool and unique in the world of milk. They have taken coconut milk out of the Asian foods aisle and put it into the familiar gable topped cartons that normally accompany breakfast cereal.
Kevin Brouillette, Turtle Mountain’s Vice President of Sales, told me that his team “was blown away by the taste and versatility of coconut milk.” Not only does it looks like milk visually but the fatty acids in coconut milk give it a smooth, creamy texture.
Known as medium chain fatty acids (MCFA’s), these fats are a reason why coconut has been a dietary staple around the world. Many traditional cultures attribute coconut with health benefits. Western medicine concurs, with studies showing the antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties of MCFA’s. And best of all, unlike the long chain fatty acids that most of us store in our love handles, MCFA’s can be utilized as energy.

Whole Foods Market is the first national retailer to sell So Delicious Refrigerated Coconut Milks, and we currently sell three flavors nationwide: Plain, Unsweetened and Vanilla. They are gluten-free, vegan and fortified with calcium and Vitamin B12.
Or, as my wife said, “This stuff rocks.”

I totally agree – I really enjoy the original flavor, but next time it goes on sale, I want to try the unsweetened variety.

This milk is so tasty! I have been pouring it on my cereal every morning.

Turtle Mountain rocks! Everything they make is delicious. And this newest product is the best tasting “milk” on the market. There are others that taste OK on cereal but this is the first one I actually enjoyed on it’s own. I just had a glass full yesterday. If you haven’t tried it, you absolutely should!

These kinda give me gas. The unsweetened is pretty gross. The sweetened ones are passable.

This product does rock! Lactose intolerant since my College years and recently I’ve become intolerant of soy leaving me with no options for my morning cereal (unfortunately rice milk just doesn’t cut when it comes to flavor). Then one day I walk by the milk and I see coconut milk. I tried it the next morning on my favorate cereal. I tell you it’s was like going back to the days when i enjoyed whole milk. It had great flavor, poured and felt like whole milk. I was in heaven!

You can find the nearest Whole Foods Market to you here: http://tr.im/allstore. If there isn’t a location near you, try the manufacturer’s store locator: http://www.turtlemountain.com/locator/locator.html. Enjoy!

I am allergic to milk products and found your substitutes in Oregon. We moved back to Michigan and finally have been able to get them here. They are the best!!!!!

I was very excited to try this milk because of the health benefits and I tried the original and I thought it was not good. My cereal tasted gross and I could barely eat it. I did put it in my coffee and that’s about the only way I can drink it. I may try the vanilla but I was disappointed because it was so expensive and it wasn’t enjoyable.

I was absolutely thrilled to find the So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage at my local Whole Foods store. I’ve been a vegan for about five years (and vegetarian prior to that). I am much healthier now than I was a decade ago when I was 20 years old, due to changing my diet from the Standard American Diet. Other non-dairy beverages have been usable, but just ho-hum. This beverage rocks! I love the taste, consistency and availability of the beverage. It fits right in with eating a low-fat, plant-based whole foods diet of fruit, vegetables, whole-grains and legumes. I’m light and healthy. My total cholesterol is 119. A healthy lifestyle diet works if you learn how to do it right! YEAH!

We love the Turtle Mountain coconut milk products! I was so excited to see the coconut milk in the refrigerated case. My daughter is allergic to milk and is breastfed, which means I have to avoid dairy as well. We tried this and it is delicious! It is actually the only milk alternative my daughter will drink.

I found this at whole foods after realizing that even lactaid free milk I can’t tolerate. Soy is out of the question too as is Rice milk because of soy and wheat allergies. This milk is DELICIOUS! The weird thing is I do not like coconut itself, but I love this milk. I can finally have cereal again and not worry about the physical reaction. To top it off, this is only 1 carbohydrate, and for a diabetic that is a dream come true. The health benefit is a definite plus. I live so far away from the Market that carries the milk that I am trying to see if I can get my local health food market to start ordering some. Thanks Turtle Mountain for looking out for the rest of us.

I got carried away the first time I tried Coconut milk based ice cream and ate the entire pint. I then developed the same symptoms I had years ago with milk – terrible gas and horrible dia—–!!

I have been working on transitioning to a Vegan diet for about a year now. I haven’t missed cheese and other dairy, but cow’s milk was the thing I just couldn’t do without. Soy and other grain- or nut-based milks just weren’t cutting it (aftertaste, watery…), and I didn’t expect much from Coconut milk, either. But WOW! This is amazing! I put “unsweetened” in my coffee and it is wonderful! None of the issues I’ve had with other non-dairy “milks”. I’m eager to try the coconut milk Kefir and will be looking for it at my local WFM. With Coconut milk and Kefir, my transition to Vegan will finally be complete.

Well, I tried the Coconut Milk Kefir, and all I can say is WOW! It is fantastic. I have to admit I have only tried the “Original” variety (don’t like sugar and have never purchased pre-flavored, or sweetened cultured milk products), so I can’t speak for the other two. I buy it by the case and use about one bottle a day. Initially it gave me some discomfort and intestinal bloating (as would the introduction of any high concentration of probiotic food), but that has since subsided. This is truly a life enhancing product for me. Thank you to the folks at Turtle Mountain for creating it, and to Whole Foods for carrying it, and for offering the 10% case discount.

I am allergic to milk so I went to soy for about 10 years. But now I have developed allergic reactions to soy that are severe enough to make me eliminate it from my diet even in trace amounts. I have always loved So Delicious soy ice cream and recently lately have been eating their coconut milk ice cream and love it too! (Although they do need to add more variety of flavors in the coconut milk product.)
I dislike rice milk with a passion and since I’ve cut out soy, I really miss being able to have a refreshing bowl of cereal in the morning with ice cold “milk”. But mostly, I terribly miss my beloved soy lattes! I have tried almond milk and tolerate it because was the only alternative, but can’t say that I’m at all very fond of it.
I can’t wait to try this product. Based on their coconut milk ice cream, I already know it will be great. (Thinking of making a special trip to whole foods this evening just to get it.) I will report back to you with the results!

Can this be purchased in the Toronto store or is it available only in the USA?
I have cut out soy milk and rice milk from my diet and am stuck with only almond milk. I would like a little more variety.
