We got it! That’s right, just in time for the Jewish High Holy Days, we now offer a new line of certified kosher chicken and turkey, available in most of our U.S. stores. (We say “most” because our meat buyer says that some of our smaller stores don’t have room to carry much and others may sell out, so we want to be cautious and not over-promise. You can always call your local store to check availability.)
These new products are provided by Kosher Valley™, a new certified kosher brand from Hain Celestial Group (Hain Pure Protein), and are certified by Rabbi Yechiel Babad and the Orthodox Union. Kosher Valley’s antibiotic-free kosher line is one of the first of its kind in the United States.
According to Kosher Valley, many steps in kosher poultry processing are still performed by hand. Specially trained rabbinical inspectors check each bird ensuring that it is of the highest quality and processed in accordance with the kosher standards of cleanliness, purity and wholesomeness. All Kosher Valley poultry is hand-salted, inside and out, to remove blood since meat with blood in it is considered non-kosher. After salting, each bird is soaked three times in icy water to thoroughly cleanse the bird and remove the salt.
Like all poultry sold at our stores, the new Kosher Valley products must also meet our strict standards requiring that the birds are raised on a vegetarian diet with no antibiotics. Looks for kosher poultry in our stores now, including fresh and frozen whole young turkeys, ground turkey, fresh and frozen chicken, and tray packs of both turkey and chicken.

Kosher chicken really does taste better than its non-kosher counterparts–we got some chicken thighs a few weeks ago and the dishes we made with them tasted so much richer and, well, meaty than we’ve had in the past. I saw the brand you carry in the UWS store the last time I was there–I’ll make a point to get some to keep on hand when we want to make chicken the star of the meal.

I tried to buy Organic Kosher Chickens at two different Whole Foods stores in Arlington, VA. They told me they did not sell any kosher chickens at all. I was very disappointed.

Its a little far to drive to Whole Foods, but for this I’m willing to try you out. I sure hope you have enough on hand at your 90064 or 90210 stores today. I’m cooking many rosh hashana meals, and dont want to end up like Jackie from Virginia.

This is great news! I was disappointed when our local Whole Foods stopped stocking Wise chickens (kosher organic) about two years ago. Please make sure these chickens reach your Mt. Washington, Baltimore store in zip 21209. And there’s no question, kosher chickens do taste better, probably from the salting.

I’m delighted to learn that you’ll be selling kosher chicken, and while there is still no Whole Foods Store in our area (47906), I will gladly shop in the Evanston, IL (60202) store when I visit that city or Indianapolis, Indiana, if you open a store there. Any hope that you’ll expand to adding kosher meat that is also from cattle raised on vegetarian feed, with no anti-biotics?

I am so excited about this!!! You have a gauranteed customer in me. Please carry more kosher products, as you are able to find what meets your standards. Until now, my only options for kosher and organic (or something close to it) have been online and outrageously expensive. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Where is “kosher valley” located?
September 17th, 2009 at 8:44 am
@Nancy Kosher Valley chickens and turkeys are raised on small farms with 30 percent more room to roam than the industry standard and free access to clean water. They are processed in a facility in Plainville, NY.

@Muriel Our teams are always looking for ways to better serve our customers and I will be sure to pass your feedback along to our Meat team. Thank you!

Thank you Whole Foods and keep expanding your great line of Kosher products! We could use a Whole Foods Market in the Lakewood, NJ (08701) area; until then we will keep making our regular long trips to Marlton and Middletown for healthy, Kosher, quality groceries.

You have made me excited. I shop at Whole Foods all the time and the one thing I am always missing is the Kosher meat. I am going to my local whole foods in the morning Mill Valley (94920) and hope to see your Kosher meat there! Crossing my fingers…

I will only buy ORGANIC meats,(chicken or beef) and until Whole Foods carries it, I will continue to buy it at my local organic farm.

I’m looking for farm-raised or “pastured” kosher poultry. I’ve heard that Wise brand is good. Do you carry Wise kosher meat and poultry products?
Also, I saw on line elsehwere that Empire purchased kosher valley. Is that true?
August 29th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
@Julie Some of our stores carry Wise Kosher brand. Please check with your local store to see if Wise is available. You are correct about Empire, and most of our stores will continue to carry the Kosher Valley brand through Empire. Thanks for your questions.

I have bought Wise Kosher Chickens and turkeys for over 10 years. Now I deal directly with Wise. I love Whole Foods, but in Judaism and the need to buy meat with religious reasons in mind, as well as health, the object to seek the highest quality is important and vital. Wise has a superior product and the best chickens, turkeys, and now beef possible. To attempt to stock their products makes only good business and community sense.

Second time buying spoiled Kosher Valley organic chicken at Whole Foods. Seriously, something I would expect to happen at Shop Rite. Not at Whole Foods. Either crank down the fridge, or stop padding the expiry dates to be so far out, as mine smelled well within the “sell by date”.

Their chicken is really sub-par. You need a better supplier.

wonderful. So happy. Xxx

The Whole Foods Store in Sarasota, FL carries some Kosher Valley chicken, but not the breast quarters on the bone. When I asked them if I could special order a dozen of these, they said no. Why not?
December 20th, 2011 at 5:02 pm
@Jessica Good question. Unfortunately, the stores typically make these types of decisions at the local level. There is no policy in place at the Headquarters against this type of request. I will pass your question on to the Store Team Leaders at the Sarasota store and someone should get with you as soon as possible regarding your question. Please allow for some extra response time since many people are out on vacation over the next week or more. Sorry for the delay, in advance and thank you for reaching out!

I have a Kosher Valley chicken in the oven right now, purchased at Whole Foods in Falls Church, VA. We’ll see how it tastes but I was appalled at how many feather stubs there were on it. I spent 20 minutes picking them out. Yuck!
