Around here, we feel like Putumayo World Music and Whole Foods Market kind of grew up together. In celebration of our 30th birthday this year, we asked Dan Storper, founder and president of Putumayo, to write about how it all came to be. Post a comment by February 7th with your favorite kind of world music or Putumayo CD and you might just win a copy of their upcoming release, Rhythm & Blues.
Putumayo World Music was created as a result of a happy series of coincidences. I must say that serendipity (destiny?) has played a major role in much of my professional life. Back in 1991, on my return from Bali, where I was designing and buying clothing and handicrafts for my wholesale and retail business based in New York, I stopped off in San Francisco for a day. On the way to visit a museum exhibit in Golden Gate Park, I heard an incredible African band called Kotoja performing in front of a few hundred people of all ages and backgrounds who were dancing to their wonderful Nigerian-based Afro-beat music. I was struck by how the music had brought these different types of people together on a beautiful San Francisco day in the park.
Back in New York a few days later, I walked into my Putumayo clothing and handicraft store and heard some intense heavy metal music coming from the speakers. I knew that it was time to address music in my stores. I put together a special mixed tape combining some of my favorites like Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and others with African, Brazilian and other world music I had started collecting. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Everyone started asking about the music.
A few weeks later, I found myself at a conference of the Social Venture Network, which had members at the time including Anita Roddick of the Body Shop, Ben & Jerry, John Mackey, Whole Foods’ CEO, and the founder of Rhino Records, Richard Foos. I started talking with Richard about releasing a CD of world music I was playing in my stores and he agreed to partner with us on the first CD, which came out in 1993.
I discussed the idea with retailers, including John Mackey, at the Social Venture Network. At first there was some skepticism. But once we had our first CDs, we started approaching individual Whole Foods stores to try out our music. From the beginning it worked out well and the staff seemed to like the idea of being able to present great world music for adults and, later, kids as a way of introducing people to the world through music.
Eventually, I met Walter Robb, Whole Foods’ Co-President, who became a fan and introduced us to many of the regional managers and helped us in the process of having Putumayo sold at most of the Whole Foods stores. Today, Whole Foods is our biggest account. More than 20 of our CDs include recipes and we’ve noticed the connection between food and music, and we even have a food-based CD for children called Picnic Playground. People play our music at home parties and have themed dinners in which French, Italian, Latin or other music is played and the recipes by well-respected chefs in our CDs are used.
We’re also pleased that through the sales of CDs at Whole Foods and other retailers, we’ve raised more than $1 million to contribute to non-profits doing good work in the regions where the music comes from. (Note: In response to the unprecedented tragedy in Haiti, Putumayo is giving all receipts from their French Caribbean CD to The Red Cross. Five of the songs on this collection are from Haiti.)
Now that I live in New Orleans, I’ve been happy to introduce great American music to the world. Our upcoming Rhythm & Blues release features many of my favorite soul artists from New Orleans and beyond. It’s a throwback to my youth when I loved the Four Tops, Manhattans, Otis Redding and many others. It’s coming out soon, but if you’d like to win an advance copy, just post a comment below and let me know what’s your favorite world music or Putumayo CD. Two comments will be selected at random to receive a free copy of our Rhythm & Blues CD. Post your comment by February 7th to be eligible. Enjoy the music!
02/10 – Congrats to our randomly selected winners of the Putumayo Rhythm & Blues CDs!

As far as Putumayo’s back catalogue is concerned, “Women of The World: Acoustic” and “Music from Chocolate Lands” are two of my favourites. Listening to these will guarantee you lower blood pressure and make great listening whether you are stuck in traffic or just chillin’ in your home. Putumayo’s label is full of some of the most fascinating and original music produced on this planet.

Putumayo is an incredible social enterprise! I think world music is key to cross-cultural reconciliation. If we can begin to appreciate another culture’s music and food, we can appreciate and respect the people of that culture.
My favorite world music group is from southeastern Uganda and is called Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa. Check them out: http://www.kinobemusic.com/

I love Hawaiian music – it’s American but it’s completely different from anything else you might term “American”. It’s serene, simple, beautiful, diverse and rich, and listening to it takes me back to a relaxing sunny afternoon on the beach in Waikiki, listening to the ukelele players in the plaza. Even if I’m stuck in traffic

Putumayo Music has been a great resource making music from around the world so accessible. My family has a number of recordings, including one of my favorites the Celtic CD’s.
I also love the World Music CD and curriculum with Passport Journals—it’s a favorite of my middle school music students!!

I love Women’s Work, and my son would never have learned the Bongo Bongo song if it weren’t for the first World Playground! I sold Putumayo cd’s in my coffee shop in Marin County in the late ’90’s and love them to this day. I miss the clothing stores, though!

I think From Congo to Cuba is a near-perfect CD. I ordered CDs from every artist featured on it, and love every one. My first love of Putumayo CDs was Afro-Latino and yes, I am one of the people who walked into the Putumayo store in Soho and was electrified by the music and have been buying Putumayo CDs ever since. Cripes, I even WENT to Putumayo in Colombia! My ambition is to acquire every Putumayo CD out there and I have a whole bookshelf dedicated to them. I am crazy about Putumayo CDs with titles like: Latin Jazz, Colombia, French Caribbean, World Lounge, the Dalom Kids & Splash, Johnny Clegg, Mo’ Vida, Latin Groove, Radio Latino, World Groove, Baila!, Nuevo Latino, Celtic Crossroads, North African Groove and gosh there are so many more, awesome all of them! Right now, I’m playing the lovely Afro-Portuguese Odyssey.

During the first days after the Haiti Earthquake, I played French Caribbean nonstop and wrote my newspaper editorials (this is my job) about Haiti while listening to this sound under the headphones.

I LOVE Putumayo!! I like to use the Playground cd’s in preschool classrooms throughout the day and the Dreamland cd’s during naptime. It is a great way to introduce cultural music. Right now my favorite cd is Acoustic Africa. I am in the process of obtaining my Master’s degree and I enjoy listening to Acoustic Africa while I am writing essays. It puts me in a wonderful mood and makes my essay writing more enjoyable!

When I requested music from my family, other than my usual request of jazz, I was given Music from the Coffee Lands II. It is still my favorite. I love the vocals in other languages. I don’t have the time to do a music search in languages & Putumayo has done it for me. Yea!
February 1st, 2010 at 12:08 pm
I own about 25+ Putumayo CDs, as a matter of fact, my entire iPod lists are Putumayo music. My favorite are the groove and lounge collections.

My favourite albums are Espana, Women of Jazz, World Lounge and Acoustic Brazil, or Music from the Coffee Lands. My two daughters (3,5 and 2 years) love to dance to this music also! We would love to get the newest Rhytm and Blues!

I first discovered Putumayo CDs while traveling in Puerto Rico. I wanted some local music as a souvenir and chose the brightly colored Putumayo CD that caught my eye. I loved it from the first listen and have since run across Putumayo CDs in the Caribbean, Spain, and even Alaksa! My collection has expanded faster than my travels, however, and my current favorite is Music from the Coffee Lands.

Hi! My two favorite Putumayo CDs are: Animal Playground and African Dreamland.
The selections on Animal Playground are upbeat, diverse and fun. A great compliment to family time or a child’s activity or play date occasion. And also, my children ages 14, 11, 8 and 6 truly enjoy listening, singing, dancing and drawing/coloring while this CD play over, and over…again
African Dreamland is superb for when you’d like to create peaceful, soothing and restful times. Beautiful music for all ages.
Highly Recommend, Putumayo.

February 1st, 2010 at 2:37 pm
I like hearing new things everyday. Today I heard a group from the Sahara and was completely won over. It’s really wonderful to have this music in the middle of Whole Foods, rather than pairing cheese with wine, pair your dishes with complementary cultural music!

SEreNDIpiTY has the word “destiny” in it;
i know, just some dumb bit of useless trivia!!!

Great interview! Thanks for providing a wide variety of world music for everyone to enjoy. My favourite Putamayo CD is one I got this past Christmas – A Jazz & Blues Christmas.
February 1st, 2010 at 8:15 pm
I second the vote for “From Congo to Cuba”—I listen to it all the time and fondly remember the drummer Balla Tounkara who used to drum for some of my west african dance classes in cambridge–I’m sure he still does…although its been a while for me ;0 Its great also to have access to Putumayo radio on iTunes…I’ve been introduced to all sorts of new artists (concha buika is one of my all time faves) just by listening in while working. LOVE it! Keep up the good karma!

I love world music that blends the sounds of our ancestors with more modern electronic music. When done well, it’s amazing how many of these take up one playlist after another.
Azam Ali and her side projects Niyaz and Vas stand out as favorites. Vas steers away from the electronic and leans on heavy vocals and folk instrumentation, but all three are amazing. Her main site is here:
http://azamalimusic.com/
More recently, music from DharmaMix (especially the ones with the Dalai Lama and Sadhguru), although it is only part world for some songs while others are more modern electronica.
http://www.dharmamix.com/
Finally, I absolutely love Ryuichi Sakamoto, as he blends elements of classical with world with electronica. He has admitted having great difficulty in bringing them together, and often classifies his own works as “experimental”. Most people only know him for his classical works, as they’ve filled many soundtracks for movies, but his catalog is amazing.

I own many Putumayo CDs, and especially love those with Salsa and African music!

I was there on that lovely day when Dan first heard Kotoja. Putumayo has done so much to put world music (and Kotoja!) on the American cultural map. Good job!
February 1st, 2010 at 9:24 pm
It’s almost impossible to choose which Putumayo CD is my fav…but if I have to choose just one…I guess it would be Samba Bossa Nova…always puts an instant smile on my face.

I love the French Cafe cd, I turn it on make a cup of tea & my afternoon blahs melt away. Before I know it my girls & I are dancing our hearts out & laughing with delight.
February 1st, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Ethiopiques, especially Volume 4 which features the sublime works of Mulatu Astatqe. The arrangements convey the wideness of the desert and the richness of the cultural awakening at the time. Like a succulent flower in the hot sun.
February 1st, 2010 at 9:27 pm
I’ve got that Putamayo Rhythm and Blues CD and it is the best CD to play blues harmonica to that I’ve got! But I saw your tweet about reporting our favorite World Music. This is very different than that and this particular one is a beautiful sad song but I get the feeling that the artist has many other beautiful songs so I’m submitting this for your attention. If you like it, you’ll have the power to promote it in a way that very few other art lovers can. Cheers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yfpMGcvGVY&feature=player_embedded

Gotta be the music of south and east Africa. I backpacked there fro 8 months in ‘96. The music is positive above all else. Every mode of public transport I travelled upon had the music playing. Something about it just gives you a smile. South Africa and Zimbabwe immediately come to mind. When I was there Oliver Mtukudzi was king. “Tuku” they called him in Zimbabwe. The true spirit of life is in this music. That’s my vote!
February 1st, 2010 at 9:46 pm
Favorite music is Jazz. Real Jazz. John Coltrane, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Russell Malone, Miles, Monk, Bill Evans, etc.

I love the Putumayo African Playground CD – I know it’s for kids, but it totally gets me moving too!
February 1st, 2010 at 10:16 pm
One of the most eye-opening CDs I had heard from Putamayo was Women in World Music. So many great female voices including the woman who soon became my favorite voice anywhere – Angelique Kidjo. So much soul, depth and warmth in one woman’s voice – combining all the joys and sorrows of life, exhalting the sheer joy of singing.
February 1st, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Trevor hall is my all time favorite musician. He is incredible in person not just on his cd. What a fantastic man! I also love Bombay jayshree. She has such a beautiful voice. These are the two I listen to when I have had a stressful day and need to relax.

I have a number of these CDs but my current favorite is Italia — my daughter got it for me at the Whole Foods near our house for Christmas because my wife and I are going to Italy in March for our 35th anniversary. It’s on constantly to get us in the mood for the trip (as if we needed more incentive!) Great music.

I make it a practice to listen to music from various cultures. This is especially true when I have spent time in different parts of the world. Nonetheless, I have found there are also wonderful local groups such as Kutandra that explore world music.
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:47 pm

February 3rd, 2010 at 6:17 pm
My husband and I happened upon a group from the Andes who were playing the most ethereal flute (and other instruments) music in the open area of a shopping plaza in Monterey, California many years ago and we have been intrigued with that sound ever since. I love the combination of world music sounds (a blend, just like people) and always believe that music can bring together the most disparate beings–it’s a shared experience. Looking forward to experiencing the new CD Rhythm & Blues.
February 3rd, 2010 at 6:27 pm
I have loved Putamayo CD’s forever and have shared them with others whenever, wherever possible.
We will be checking out the French Caribbean one to serve as background music for our
contribution to the Haiti relief efforts; Our Week long Helping Hands Community Service project with the approximately 400 student in our Elementary School.
Now, that’s the far reaching hand of global music!

Favorite: Andes music
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:11 pm
I have loved Zydeco music ever since I went with friends to the jazz fest in New Orleans. The second year we went was quite an adventure. Some friends bought a six-sleeper pontoon boat and started out in Chicago for a trip down the Mississippi to NO. They picked me up in St. Louis and six days later we arrived in NO in time for the Jazz Fest. We listened to some great music on the way down and of course at our destination. That was way back in 1988 and the memories always come back when I hear some great NO music.
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:13 pm

I like many of the Putamayo collections. One of my favorites is the Rough Guide to the Music of Portugal; on that CD I fell in love with Margarida Bessa’s “Fala Da Mulher Sozinha,” but it’s all-around a fine CD.
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:33 pm
I love the chance to try out new, different, non-mainstream sounds!
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:40 pm

These CD’s have provided great exposure to world music and have been an invitation for me to exlpore varied cultures more deeply. They have even been the impetus for travel, dance, volunteerism and culinary experimentation! What a wonderful resource, education, and entertainment!
February 3rd, 2010 at 7:42 pm

February 3rd, 2010 at 8:17 pm
I love Putumayo! I have many Putumayo CD’s, including African Groove, Dreamland, Gypsy Groove, Latin Lounge & World Reggae (which I am listening to as I write!). Putumayo is the next best thing to actually traveling and visiting all of these wonderful places, people, and cultures around our world. It is such a joy to have these mixes, which represent the colorful variety and sounds of our shared human experience, as well as everything that we all share in common–the joys of friendship and great music! And just as Putumayo is synonymous with World Music, Whole Foods is likewise synonymous with World Foods, bringing its customers, not only quality and wholesome locally grown foods and ingredients, but also the best foods and ingredients selected from the farthest reaches of the world, for us to experience at home. It may not be very practical for us to travel to Colombia or Bolivia for fair trade beans of pure, rich, raw rainforest cacao, jet to Madagascar for those aromatic bourbon vanilla beans and then zip over to the Island of Mauritius to pick up a bag of that deep, earthy Muscovado sugar that makes our homemade chocolate cakes sing–but we don’t have to! That Whole Foods and Putumayo have formed this wonderful alliance is no surprise. That shared vision and vibe that has brought them together is what draws us, as fans, to them as well. Bless up, folks at Putumayo and Whole Foods! And keep stirrin’ it up!
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:17 pm
My favorite world music is a Scottish CD by Bonnie Rideout called “Gim’e Elbow Room.”
These are marvelous tunes.
The title song is about children, who call out for respect of their personal space — their time, thoughts and feelings.
A joy to share with family.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:18 pm
I love Putamayo compilations. My favorite one is “Music From the Coffee Lands.” Check it out!

I think my favorite so far has been the French Cafe CD; I would visit a tea house where that CD was often playing and it did so much for my mood, even on the greyest days! My twins love the Putumayo Kids CDs; the selections are always so lovely and approachable.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:23 pm
My favorite Putomayo CD is Arabic Groove. I dance in a bellydance company, and we have used every track on that cd to perform to! I’d love love love to see you produce more great Middle Eastern music! Thanks for the good times!
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:24 pm
I don’t know how I could ever choose only one that I love. I have many and enjoy listening to them frequently.
I will tell you a story that I am sure you will appreciate. I work with cancer patients in a Radiation Oncology department. At a large university center where I used to work we often treated prisoners from the nearby Federal Prison. I would always play one of your CD’s during a long session that would require the patient to be relaxed and still. My favorite at that time was the Celtic music. The prisoners often commented that they had never heard that kind of music before and would ask what it was because they felt calm and soothed while listening to it.
Me too!

February 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 pm
My daughter *loves* all the Putumayo Kids cds we’ve heard so far, but I think our joint favorite is “Sing Along with Putumayo”!
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Happy 30th Birthday Putumayo World Music! This is such a great assortment of world music to chose from and the global influences are fabulous! My entire family loves music and it great to have these CD to share with everyone at home and gatherings. I can’t pick just one favorite – the Latino CDs are wonderful and we have Salsa, Cafe Cubano, Cuba, then there’s the Blues/Jazz – Women of Jazz and Blues and Jazz around the World are both great! I could go on about the fabulous CDs. Keep up the great work and here’s to another 30 years of great world music! Peace! Janice in Seattle, WA
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:32 pm

February 3rd, 2010 at 8:41 pm
Putumayo music is the chaos equalizer in our household. I put the CDs on when I arrive home from work – and the music provides a calming influece on both my kids and even my dogs
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:47 pm
I love a variety of world music, especially salsa and cuban. Since I have a little one, lately, we listen to a lot of Putumayo Kids CDs, and Picnic Playground is my family’s favorite!
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:52 pm

February 3rd, 2010 at 8:52 pm
I have lots of CDs, but I love the French Cafe CD the best! The collection of songs are so romantic and enjoyable to listen to. Hi highly recommend this CD.

We play them at ten thousand villages where I volunteer.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:55 pm
I love this type of music and would like to have a Putumayo CD.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:56 pm
We played Putamayo’s “World Playground” and “Sing Along with Putamayo” for our children endlessly when they were little. These two cd’s were our go-to play time and bed time music. We loved them!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:06 pm
I love all the Putamayo music, but my favorite ones have to be the cd’s for children. My daughter asks me for the “jumpy music” and we put it on and dance around the kitchen together, giggling and laughing.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:11 pm
Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra – Beggers and Saints
When I want to travel the world through music, I reach for this CD. It has classical Indian instruments (for that Far East sound)accompanied with vocals (English/Sanskrit/Hindi) that have a funk-pop vibe. Some instramental to relax to and some that make you want to dance. Great balance, which we all need more in our lives.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:12 pm
I’ve always enjoyed the jazzy sounds of Hugh Masakela.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:14 pm
I have listened to many Putmayo Cd’s but my all time favorite is ” Women of Jazz.” When I listen to the music on my Ipod, I feel as though I am in New Orleans surrounded by each and every one of these fabulous female artists who sing their melodies with such heart and joyous rhythm.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:14 pm
I have the Portuguese and Italian Putumayo CDs and I love them. Lots of happy songs.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:15 pm
AOL Radio’s “World Music” station is top-notch. It’s great to be able to hear music from so many different places…
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:28 pm
I am a Milwaukee Public School teacher! I play Putumayo World Music everyday while my students eat breakfast. They are developing a new appreciation of the world around them through music! It’s really awesome. Our favorites are French Cafe and Sahara Lounge!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:31 pm
My daughter loves to listen to these when she comes shopping with me
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:32 pm
I am a huge Putumayo fan! You’ve created such an amazing collection of music…music that I, otherwise, would not have been exposed to. I’ve enjoyed many of your CD’s and have loved sharing them with my children! Thank you!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:32 pm
I love listening to your New Orleans Brass CD! It reminds my of my grandfather everytime I play it. One time, I even used it to keep my friend and I upbeat while painting the inside of her house
You provide a great way to expose anyone (who will listen) to some possibly awe-inspiring, fun-filled, exotic, moving and overall wonderful music. Thank you!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:34 pm
Hearing the Portuguese-tinged Brazillian beat makes my day and transports me right back to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. 8sigh* Thank you Putumayo!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:35 pm
They are all great and I love teaching children with the cds. Everytime we learn about a new country or region we bring in the music and the food. Right now we are learning how to Salsa Around the World. It gets our hips swinging, cha cha cha…
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:51 pm
I like the Latin sounds! Good to shake the hips
thank you for compiling these wonderful albums!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Love all the CD’s by Putumayo, we listen to the French one almost everyday!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:54 pm
this is exciting and can’t wait to hear this on my iPod, car stereo, house stereo and hear it throughout the house and backyard stereo system. thanks for offer and I want to win.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:54 pm
My favorite CD: Afro Latino. Turn it on and the body can’t help but move!
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:58 pm
I, too, think that the spread of world music can do a great deal to achieving reconciliation across cultures. We tend to be blinded by sight, so to speak. Perhaps when we cannot see each other, the music lets us “hear” each other, moving us past boundaries we didn’t even know we were guarding and aren’t aware we have crossed until we look back at them in retrospect.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:13 pm
We love Putomayo CD’s. So funky and unusual. Our favorites are Asian Groove; Paris; and India.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:40 pm
I do not own a Putumayo CD. I have heard the CDs when I have been in bookstores, coffeeshops and boutique stores during my travels across the country. I especially like the Latin and African flavored/themed songs; you can’t help moving to the rhythmic beat.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:43 pm
I have downloaded some awesome samplers of African music that I really enjoy. I would love to hear this too.
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:55 pm
I am a big fan of Putumayo CD’s! Whenever I am stuck in traffic, I put one of them on and it is like going on a mini escape/vacation!
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:56 pm
I started collecting Putamayo CD’s years ago, when I lived in Arcata and heard the music on the public radio station. I love how Putamayo has brought little-known international music and musicians into our homes!
February 3rd, 2010 at 10:58 pm
Can’t beat those jazz albums – particularly Jazz Around the World.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:03 pm
Just bought a CD player for our granddaughters – 4 and 5. They are loving and dancing to all kinds of music. I think I will share with them.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:06 pm
I love your CD’s – I play them for my clients during their reflexology sessions frequently and I often get comments and requests for the name of the CD. Keep them coming!
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:12 pm
king sunny ade is my favorite world musician.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:28 pm
The fun, colorful Putumayo CD covers captured my attention and my heart the first time I saw the display. My first purchase? Latino! Latino! which I still thoroughly enjoy.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:29 pm
I love the Putumayo CDs. My favorite is Music from the Wine Lands. Several years ago we moved to Northern California and this CD created a perfect setting for our trips to Napa. Now whenever we have friends or family visit, we always have this CD playing in their guest room to welcome them to our home and create the right mood for their vacation to Northern California.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:34 pm

February 4th, 2010 at 12:23 am
Wow, I’ve been a fan of Putumayo World Music for years…it is nice to know the Whole Story. My favorite is the Best of World Music. I drift away to the islands and am immersed in the culture while listening to the CD. But, most importantly knowing that proceeds from the CD are used to improve lives and empower others to overcome life struggles gives me a sense of being part of something larger than myself and that as a collective we are making a positive impact on the world. I look forward to hearing the newest CD. Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez
February 4th, 2010 at 12:51 am
I have most of the Putumayo CD’s. Variety in music is important to me and being exposed to WORLD music is even more important. Two of my favorite Putumayo CD’s are: Brazilian Jazz and the Cuban-flavored CD. I am a massage therapist and so am constantly working at providing new relaxing music for my clients and for myself (how would you like to have to listen to the same tracks over and over and over and over… well you get the idea). I download the CD’s to my PC and create playlists using Cuban conga, the softer songs, Bossa Nova and other great stuff. Then I download to my MP3 player and I’m portable! My clients often ask me what the music is and are surprised and happy to learn you can get it from Whole Foods! Thanks for helping my career and my sanity!
February 4th, 2010 at 12:53 am
I’ve never heard a Putumayo CD I didn’t like. Good music is good music, no matter where in the world it comes from.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:54 am
There is so much variety out there- it is hard to pick. I really like some Cuban jam, or flowing rhthyms of Fijian songs, or Mongolian throat singing just to name a few. One favorite documentary is “Ghengis Blues”- about a blues player the goes to Mongolia and incorporates his blues with throat singing- quite unique and a great sound! So any mix or type of music is ok with me. Bring it on!

The Habib Koite CD Ma Ya is one of my favorites but I have not heard on I don’t like yet. Thanks for the music.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:38 am
music knows no borders
February 4th, 2010 at 3:44 am
Can’t wait for this one. This style of R&B was the music of my youth, and hearing it brings me right back to the old days!!
February 4th, 2010 at 4:23 am
I loved reading about the inception of Putumayo. You have lived my dream life. Anytime I see the words living in New Orleans my eyes perk up.
I own several of the CD’s. I cannot say what is my favorite series but I do tend to lean toward the blues.
I love world music so just about everything I have heard pleases my senses.
I travel to Lafayette every year for the Internationale Fest just for the music and bands that I get to hear in one place!
I also love Whole Foods. I have purchased many items there from World of Good and totally support all efforts to help those who struggle in this world!
Thank you
February 4th, 2010 at 5:05 am
My family loves African Playground. When the kids need some fun, indoor active time, I put it on and we dance our hearts out!
February 4th, 2010 at 5:23 am
My favorite is the American Blues which CD which was given to me as a gift. Would love to hear the new CD!
February 4th, 2010 at 5:43 am
I can’t think of any better music. I have a number of Putumayo cds. My favorites are the New Orleans and Zydeco compilations. They are always playing on my ipod or my home stereo. Fantastic music!!
February 4th, 2010 at 6:20 am
Thanks for making these wonderful CDs (and for packing them in the mostly paper) If I have to pick it’s One World Many Cultures for my favorite CD, New Orleans Christmas is a close second. Dreamland is one of my favorite gifts to all the new moms that we know, and we adults love it too. It was fun reading your story.
February 4th, 2010 at 6:44 am
My favorite is the Putumayo – Celtic Tides and Women of the World! They are uplifting and I never get tired of listening.
February 4th, 2010 at 6:50 am
Having managed a fair trade store where we sold your wonderful CDs, I have about 12 of them and I have to say my current favorite is African Playground. My 2-year-old son and I dance to the songs in our living room every morning and my husband, who’s Ethiopian, really appreciates the song from his native land. Thank you for the vast array of children’s CDs, and for representing so many cultures!
February 4th, 2010 at 6:54 am
My favorite Putumayo CD is “Latin Lounge”. I can’t tell you how much pleasure it brings me every time I hear it whether in my car or at home (where I am apt to dance around the house as I listen). Fantastic!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:02 am
I absolutely love the Putumayo CDs. We have several and the lullabies are great for the little ones.
thanks you…hope to get an advanced copy

Vivre Putumayo! You have opened my ears to Africa!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:26 am
Interesting article has me wanting to hear a sample of the songs on the Putumayo CD. I’m intrigued!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:29 am
French Caribbean is a favorite, but CAN’T WAIT for the Rhythm & Blues CD! Having grown up near New Orleans, blues music brings back a lot of special memories. Thanks for doing a great job!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:31 am
Celtic Tides is my favorite Putumayo CD. When I was in college, our dance instructor would allow us to choreograph to this music.I remember it being such an incredible experience being on stage and bringing a group of strangers together in unity.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:32 am
The Putamayo world music series is great! I have several which I play all the time: in my car, in my home, in my yoga classes. THe songs transport me to other cultures and exotic places. Even if I can’t go to these places, I can get the flavor by listening to the CDs. It is difficult to favorite! Maybe “Women of the World” – or possibly “American Blues” – or, or, or……..

I love hearing the music of the world on these CDs. There are some great songs and interesting compositions. Keep up the good work!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:50 am

I love to see the common threads among musicians around the world. One of my favorite world music initiatives is playingforchange.org.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Would love to hear this beautiful music.
Thank You.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:56 am
Love them all, and it is so hard to select one…One World is the one that I listen to the most. I have been having a great time turning my friends on to the music.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:57 am
It is because of the Putomayo CDs that I mastered my 2nd CD with Emily Lazar at The Lodge in NY, the same place Putomayo uses. The sound quality is spectacular, something we musicians value greatly. I own a few African CDs (including the one with all women which I LOVE), blues series, and bought the kid blues one for my nephew (love Taj Mahal!). Thank you for the sounds!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:58 am
Artist mentioned are often listened to as well. Manhatten Transfer is in the number one place with Diana Krall right behind them. Album artwork (happy colors and composite super) is eye catching and brought me to write a blib. Look forward to the album and continuing treks through Whole Food stores wherever I might be… thank you for this opportunity.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:58 am
I must have about 10 Putumayo CDs and often give them as gifts. They are terrific! My favorite type of music is “world” and “roots.” Putumayo sure knows how to make both obscure and better known music genres available to us in “mainstream” America! Keep up the great work!!!!
February 4th, 2010 at 7:59 am
I have listened to Putumayo music on 91.9 WFPK, Louisville KY for years on World Cafe 6-8 p.m. M-F. Reminds me of my many travels to Mexico, Central & South America. Awesome music!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:02 am
I love Jose Conde y ola fresca! Though they’re from NYC, they do incredible Latin music!!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:04 am
I’ve been a gypsy traveller for 25 years. Your cd’s bring the world and my friends from everywhere into my heart when I’m home. They lift my spirit. Thank you and congratulations.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:05 am
Thanks to magical voice Cesaria Evora, I keep coming back to Cape Verde. But I’m also a big, big fan of music from Mali and the surrounding regions. Or did id I say Celtic? Irish, Scottish, Breton, Cape Breton … . Or was that Cajun? Zydeco, Creole, blues, soul, jazz, reggae. (Hmmm, I’m starting to suspect I’m unsure if I have a favorite music.)
February 4th, 2010 at 8:07 am
I absolutely LOVE the Putumayo CD’S! I used to buy them in the coolest antique shop in Asheville, North Carolina. I have several of them, but have always considered “World Lounge” to be my personal favorite. It is like my own “Theme CD.” It is the music that I turn to whether I am feeling bad or feeling good!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:11 am
Although I am partial in my listening, I have special places in my heart for ethnic music and jazz. I think if more people listened to a wider variety of music, they would have a broader understanding of each other and the world. Music is definitely a language that transcends every other barrier and is a gift. Rhythm & Blues, along with jazz, is an American invention in the music world that too often is overlooked. Kudos for releasing this CD!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:13 am
I like latin blues but also typical accordeon rhytms from Paris/France.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:18 am
It’s always a great idea to support local artists and I can’t wait to hear this.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:27 am
Putumayo music helped me appreciate the tremendous diversity of world music.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:28 am
I have a collection of the Putamayo CDs that I started buying when they were first released in the Putamayo Clothing store I shopped in New York…I love all the Brazilian ones but my favorite is the North African Groove….it is a wonderful mix that really sparked my interest in that part of the world and Rai music.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:31 am
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the flashback…I actually worked in your store on Columbus Ave in NY from 1990-1991 & was witness to the wonderful effects (both mood & sales) that the “new” music/tape had on your customers & sales staff.
I am intrigued to learn of the chain of events that brought such great music to my ears & have been meaning to contact you for a copy of the original tapes you played while I was there b/c one of the songs Crek Crek Crek (not sure is I’m spelling it correctly) is my absolute favorite & I haven’t been able to find since.
I can go on but will leave you with this…I do not have a “favorite” Putumayo CD per se just a memory of many old favorites as well as an exciting anticipation of the new releases.
Best Rgrds,
Lisa

My first was Putumayo Presents. I’ve since added Samba Bossa Nova and Rumba Flamenco to my collection. They’re all great albums that keep me moving. I play them while I’m working – I’m an artist, and the music never lets me down. The wonderful rhythms and sounds of the percussion instruments keep the creativity flowing!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Our family loves so many different types of music, and all of the Putumayo CDs that we own! Right now, our favorite CD is World Playground, because it is upbeat and features a variety of music types.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:43 am
I absolutely love all the Putamayo CDs. Their CDs are the only ones that both my daughter, who is 19, and I love listening to. I look forward to hearing the new Rhythm & Blues CD.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:43 am
Music from India.
What a trip.
Fantastic!
February 4th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Putumayo music is what I call “happy” music. I can’t sit still when I’m listening to it. My favs include Latin Lounge, Latin Jazz, Women of Jazz. (BTW, it was hard to narrow this list.) My husband and I listen to our selections every Sunday morning: they lift our spirits and our appreciation of the world through the notes of music. Thanks for bringing the world to us through our speakers.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:02 am
The CD’s open us up to a whole universe of sound that many of us have not yet explored! Thanks!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:06 am
I love Putumayo-my fav right now is the Salsa Around the World. Can’t wait to hear this new one!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:13 am
The at-risk kids I work with love African Groove, as do I. When I’m home, getting the cleaning done I love to listen to Women of Spirit and I get to mentally travel somewhere else while the mundane gets done.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:14 am
I’m really enjoying the New Orleans collection I recently purchased. These cd’s aare getting me in the mood for Mardi Gras.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:15 am
We got the Dreamland CDs for our twins when they were born and they are wonderful for our evening bed time routine.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:25 am
I love the Brazilian music cd for children. My husband is from Brazil and we wanted to introduce our daughter to the music and not have to order cds from brazil. I was very impressed and my husband was familiar with most of the songs. She now knows a few of the songs by heart and is speaking more portuguese! Thanks
February 4th, 2010 at 9:26 am
Hi! One of my favorites is Braziilan Lounge. Keep up the good work and cant wait to hear more! If there any other place to get them besides wholefoods and online?
February 4th, 2010 at 9:27 am
While I love listening to blues, African music is a big draw with me. From Afropop, Griot to djembe I’m mesmerized by the various areas. Artists like Angelique Kidjo, Konono No. 1, Youssou N’Dour Fela Futi, Ali Farka Touré
February 4th, 2010 at 9:28 am
Hi! Bravo. One of my favorites is Braziilan Lounge. Keep up the good work and cant wait to hear more! Is there any other place to get them besides whole foods and online?
February 4th, 2010 at 9:28 am
I love this type music.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:40 am
The music of Putumayo gently reminds me that there are peoples and cultures other than my limited surroundings. Thank you for bringing it my attention whenever I do something as simple as putting on a CD.
February 4th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Exciting to hear new work and the flavors, so organic. This could describe Whole Foods as well, but seriously, the feeling, the rhythm, VIVA, VIVA, VIVA!!!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:50 am
I especially enjoyed the Italia CD listening to the Brazilian vibe mixed with a reggie beat which is very uplifting!
Also was pleasantly surprised with the Israel CD as I expected something quite different, but found that I liked the mixed cultural sounds of french and ethiopian folk. Great for relaxing and while cooking!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:51 am
I love Putumayo World Music Series. I would love to add this to my collection!!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Favorite Putumayo CD is Jazz Around the World…
February 4th, 2010 at 9:59 am
May I suggest some Ecuadorean Cumbia music? Los Graduados was my favorite band in Guayaquil in the late 1960s, early 1970s.I really liked the song Manuelito Barrios – There are also some groups singing songs in Quechua, the Indian language native to Ecuador. The play Huasipongo, written in Quechua, would also be worth sponsoring for production in the US.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:05 am
Love Moso Manman Emeline Michel – nice to reflect on the great Haitian music, and see the true spirit of the people, in these struggling, sad time,
can’t wait….to get the CD
February 4th, 2010 at 10:06 am
I use Putumayo music in my everyday life. My girls listen to World Groove since its got the beat they love. I place various songs into my mix for teaching cycling so my participants can be exposed. I played the Carribean party while on my cruise to Bahamas and then also after the earthquake. I love the vibe from this CD…keeps the blues away in the winter months in Chicago. I also use Sahara Lounge while teaching Pilates….super smooth.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:07 am
There are so many excellent Putumayo CDs. One in particular I’ll recommend is the Cape Verde.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:18 am
I like the kids’ music.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:25 am
I love Putumayo! The ‘Greece: a Musical Odyssey’ plays in my kitchen when I cook Greek food!

Love at first tune.. In 2002, as a foreign student struggling with lectures, homework, and homesickness, I didn’t know about Putumayo at all.. One quiet weekday afternoon I stepped into a small art craft shop in town and found music soothes my soul and body.. Before coming out of the shop, I asked the shop clerk what she was playing. She said “Putumayo”.. Wasn’t sure if I got the spell right but anyway I straight went to Barnes&Nobles next door and asked that if they have “Petimayo” and bought the first Putumayo CD “Music From the Chocolate Lands”. Now I got married and have a beautiful son. I recall that when my husband and I met first time, both of us were pleasantly surprised that we both enjoy Putumayo CDs..

I’ve had the priviledge of owning and listening to Putamayo CDs for several years. Now that we have a daughter of our own, we’ve started collecting the Putamayo Kids CDs … she loves the Seasame Street from around the World! My husband and I especially love the French CDs–we already own the French Carribean CD–a must-have for everyone!
We wish Putamayo the best, and keep the great cover art coming!

When you were in Bali in 1991, did you run into Carl Berman, who has a Batik co.? I stayed at his apt. in San Francisco, with my cousing, his stepsister Barbara for a long weekend. Interesting guy—American 70’s world roamer who ended up in Bali, married a Balanesian
princess, who cleaned up his act. Then with her help he started a Batik business. Last I heard
he was still living in Bali 6 mos. & the rest in San Fran, where he hawked his fabric.
Thought you may have run into him when you buy wares for your co. Haven’t heard anything
since Barbara passed 5 yrs. ago.

I like many of their CDs, but the Latin music offerings are my current favorites.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:54 am
My comments may not be admissible because I cannot declare a favorite. WUMB, the campus Public Radio station for UMASS Boston
has a wonderful show on Sun. afternoons called Folk Odyssey which has broadened my appreciation of World Music to the extent that choosing is most difficult. I guess i would that music of West Africa along with Andean, Hawian slack-key guitar and singing,
Balkan choir, and Gypsy music are my favorites. ( But that’s today ! )
February 4th, 2010 at 10:55 am
let me win
February 4th, 2010 at 11:18 am
I love any Latin music — the energy in it just makes you want to get up and dance
February 4th, 2010 at 11:29 am
Thank goodness for Putumayo! It brings the world to us in such vibrant and colorful ways. I have enjoyed so much music from Putumayo especially the Music from Tea Lands CD. I spent time in Asia exploring tea and came back to find this wonderful music collection.
February 4th, 2010 at 11:48 am
I love the Paris CD the most. It reminds me of my trip to Paris and the French countryside in 2006. Ironically, when we were there, we heard more American music than French music. Those cafes need the Putamayo Paris CD!!

Thank You, for giving us Music of the world. One more way we can show how really alike we are. Music is the connection we all can appreciate.
February 4th, 2010 at 11:56 am
Not long ago, I owned a small bookstore. My favorite vendor was Putumayo. I loved playing the music in my store (customers also enjoyed the music) and being able to offer Putumayo CDs. My contacts with the people at Putumayo were always positive and professional.
I’m a long time fan of Putumayo music. My favorites recently are: African Dreamland, American Folk and Women of the World: Acoustic.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
I like the Putumayo Samba Bossa Nova also. But I also use them when I entertain. I’ve had a Greek nite with rolled grape leaves from Whole Foods with a Greek salad and give out olive oil soap. The Greek Cd was great for that. I plan on doing something similar with the Asian and the Arabic using Moroccan food.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
I love Putumayo’s various cds and the introduction they give me to various genres within cultures all around the world. My favorite would probably be Turkish Groove (my first Putumayo purchase) which I listen to almost every day. I’m a bellydancer and I love dancing to the middle eastern cds that Putumayo puts out. Furthermore, I think the numerous charities Putumayo has collaborated with are fatastic- I am amazed by all the great causes that are out there and I never thought of until I discovered them on the Putumayo page. Fellow dancers, performers, and musicians along with myself have collaborated for several shows to send money onto some of these fantastic charities. Rock on, Putumayo!
February 4th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
I like many of their albums but right now it would be the World Playground.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Hi Dan!
Thank you for your wonderful company; what a boon it is to music lovers everywhere. My problem is: EVERY Putumayo CD I’ve heard has been my favorite! That said, the Christmas CDs really provide a cross cultural experience that’s an educational – and musical – surprise. Keep up the great work!

Women of the World! That is one of my favorite Putumayo Cd’s!
I am a yoga instructor and my students love when I play any and all Putumayo Cd’s. They always have a wonderful mix of languages, which I love. And students always ask what I’m playing.
February 4th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
I love Jamaican music of any kind…dancehall, esspecially! I also love the blues, so I’m really hoping I get lucky and win this CD, so I can check out Putumayo’s take on the blues!
February 4th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Just as you stated in your article your CD’s are great for themed dinners. I have purchased your theme CD’s on several occasions for very successful dinners for large groups at work.
I also know that my little 2 year old granddaughter likes singing and dancing to your CD’s.
I was also drawn to your Women of the World CD’s especially pleased to see that group represented.
Your Putumayo radio shows are great too!
Keep making such great music and sending out the CD’s for us all to enjoy.
February 4th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
i bought a CD for my son, and got hooked on their music selections myself, ha-ha!
February 4th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
I’ve been a fan of Putumayo since they began in the ’90s. Their compilations have IMPROVED over time. I especially like their underrated Asian-themed compilations, such as “India”,”Asian Groove”,”Asian Lounge” and “Music from the Tea Lands.”
One of their hidden gems is the now out-of-print “Gardens of Eden.” Think of it as acoustic New Age worldbeat. On it,I discovered the Indian smooth jazz of Shweta Jhaveri, and Brazil’s Ana Rita Simonka, who combines Indian classical music with bossa nova. Ana Rita Simonka’s “Bossa Nova Delhi” is a soothing New Age/world music classic. It’s Indian ragas meeting the silky sensuality of bossa nova.
Putumayo World Music is the best! They’ve introduced me to great musicians–like Algeria’s Cheb Mami, Brazil’s Ana Rita Simonka, the French performance art collective Lo’Jo. All-around great!
February 4th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
My favorite Putamayo CD (and has been for years) is Women’s Work. I use to listen to this with my roommate way back when, and now I listen to it with my 4 1/2 year old daughter. It’s not only beautiful music but also powerful. I love the “sister spirit” it evokes. My personal favorite song on the CD is I Met a Man by Toni Childs. Her voice just grabs hold of you.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
I love Brasileiro. The rhythms simply move me to dance. I put it on and dance around the living room.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
The music I like the best is something up and probably Jamaican. Something that has rhytm and a beat and is up-lifting.
I hope I win.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
I would love to win this cd, love music!
February 4th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

February 4th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
I like Luis Munoz Latin music CD’s. He is a local Santa Barbara musician. His music is just great!
February 4th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

February 4th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
I am a YogaDance teacher who uses the amazing Putumayo CDs almost daily. I can’t imagine teaching without them! After reading your story I thought it was interesting that the group Kotoja got you started. Salawe is one of my favorite songs that I play all the time. Many of the students in my classes are disabled, and they respond so positively to your music. Thank you for this gift!
February 4th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
I love music from other cultures and much of my collection is from the countries or places that I have visited (Philippines, Germany and Hawaii). But I also have music from the cultures that speak to me (Native American, R&B, Celtic, Scotish and Afican) or moves my soul. I can feel the energy and the pride of the people that are a part of that area/culture in their music. Music tells tales of the history of a culture or people. Before there were books or easy travel…the only way to communicate or pass down history was through music. What better way to show your respect and appreciation of the history of the world then through sharing music. That energy/pride is passed on through the recordings of Putumayo World music….next best thing to being there in person.
February 4th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
I became interested in world music through a world music class that I took in college. My first exposure to Putumayo was at the library, I was looking for some world music bands that I could listen to, the first one being Afro beats. I have since listened to many other Putumayo CD’s and just recently brought a chldren’s world music CD for my great neice who is 1 year old. Thank you Putumayo for opening our minds..
February 4th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
I love Putumayo music at home and in my classroom. There’s nothing like taking a 5 minute break and dancing to a different beat. Our favorite cd is Swing Around the World.
February 4th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

February 4th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
I listen to music of all different types and nationalities and drive my family nuts — they never know what I will have playing on the stereo or my iPod — Putumayo is one of the best resources for expanding your music listening horizons.
February 4th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
I absolutely LOVE Putumayo!!! It’s food for the soul…I appreciate the sounds of various instruments, beats and voices, which inspire me to learn about world music artists and their native countries, cultures, and traditions. In addition I have spread the word by buying numerous Putumayo Kids CDs as gifts for my friends’ newborn babies.
February 4th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
This is the first time I was introduced to Putumayo. I’m excited to get to know more about Putumayo Music.
February 4th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Here I am on a wintr’y twilight Minnesota eve listening to Putumayo World Party. It not only has put me on the sunny side of the globe, but also inspired a spate of Caribbean style cooking, ala Whole Foods recipes.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
I love all Putumayo CD’s, but I do have a preference for instrumental Peruvian, Mexican and African sounds.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
Putumayo Kids, for sure!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
I LOVE Putumayo Women of Jazz which my friend just gave me! Putumayo Playground is fantastic music too!
February 4th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
I love Women of Spirit. A friend gave it to me when I was facing a difficult situation, and to this day, it uplifts me when I hear that music. I have several other CDs, but I also especially enjoy Music from the Tea Lands. And, it gives me pleasure to buy something so wonderful that is produced by a company that is doing good!
February 4th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
I have several Putamayo CD’s. They rock! I love the history behind music and how it weaves into our lives. Putamayo allows me to hear music from around the world, to feel connected to the people who know how music brings us together. Oh, let me mention that I am a dancer, one who finds joy in throwing one of Putamayo’s recording on at the end of the day and forget the stress from the day and “let go”!!!!!
February 4th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Attended a great Mono Lake Committee seminar on California Bighorn sheep in Lee Vining. After seminar leader worked our tails off climbing up and down the eastern sierra we spotted wild bighorns in Lundy Canyon–amazing! Came back to Committee office to decompress, found Music From the Chocolate Lands–have been listening to it ever since. Think ‘Baba’ a Belize piece which is truly amazing. Thanks, Putamayo.
February 4th, 2010 at 10:46 pm
My favorite Putumayo CD is A Family Christmas, On A Family Christmas, Putumayo offers a collection of yuletide favorites by a fascinating array of artists that every family is sure to enjoy while trimming the tree or sharing a holiday dinner.
Leon Redbone’s heartwarming interpretation of the holiday standard “Let It Snow” will keep you cozy on the coldest of Christmas nights. This is a joyous collection.

I am dumbfounded….where has my head been…I had not heard of the music Putumayo=Whole World Music….and the music with recipes….my head must have been buried in the sand. I gather from reading the article that Whole Foods is carrying these CD’s. Our heritage includes, Spanish, Mexican, French, American Indian and Italian-Add English/Indian(India) when you add our daughter in law and consequently our two young grandsons. What an adventure we have ahead of us.

February 5th, 2010 at 9:10 am
I just took a trip to Puerto Rico in the fall and saw a band there I fell in love with. Ithink their name was Desacero. They play Neyorican music. It is a combination of African and Latin music…
February 5th, 2010 at 9:29 am
I liked World Playground 2 the best.
February 5th, 2010 at 10:33 am
I am an art teacher and use many of your world music cds in my art classes to enhance and create a complete, multicultural environment for my students to make their art. They love it! I think the Arfican Groove CD is so awesome! We were just maskmaking to it the other day!!!!!!
February 5th, 2010 at 10:34 am
My absolute favorite Putumayo cd was Women of the World Celtic. Both my daughter and I (she was quite young at the time; 6, I think) loved listening to it and singing on road trips. I have since lost this cd and really miss it!
February 5th, 2010 at 10:46 am
I love the Jewish Odyssey. I feel like it has helped connect me to my roots, and inspired me to seek out other klezmer, israeli and traditional hebrew music. I play the whole CD every year at my annual hannukah party too!
February 5th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
What a wonderful story! I have purchased your music and brought my family up with listening to it everyday. I share it with patient families and with friends. My own family went through a tremendous tragedy and music carried us through the days. This music not only enriches our lives but helps to heal and lifts spirits.
I can’t wait to hear your new CD. Two of my daughters have made trips to help cleanup and rebuild after Katrina and one of my volunteer groups also includes docs and nurses who are also master gardeners making trips to New Orleans. I love the people, the music, the food.
February 5th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
Hi,
I wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoy all your cd’s that you put together; however my two favorites are:
South Pacific- love this! From Hawaii and love all the music, especially the one from New Guinea.
Also love the one with Samba and Bassanova. Can’t remember the name right off hand, but listen to it often.
Oh, the other one is Kids playground cd.
Great job in selecting perfect compilations. The more you do, the more people are exposed to great music from around the world. Love your story. Mahalo!

My personal favorite is Sahara Lounge. It’s very soothing. The CD was playing in the background in the store I was visiting and bought it right there and then. I immediately opened it and played in my car when I left to see if the rest of the CD was as good as what I heard in the store and was not disappointed.
February 5th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
“Rhythm and blues will cure most anything!” When you got a case of the down and outs, it’ your day in the barrel…listening and dancing (you know you can’t help from dancing) will pick you right up.
Every country has its own form of rhythm and blues. But, it all goes to the same place – the heart.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
Wow the blending of things or threads in my past. The new CD is music I listened to in younger years, but over time I have owned several “international music” tapes, cds – even a Putumayo – Whole foods since its inception along with a few of its competitors over the years. My current international is “Anouar Brahem’s Le pas du chat noir”. My current WF’s favs – tuna salads and cole slaws. Common threads across the world food and music let us all come together at the table.
February 6th, 2010 at 6:54 am
Dear Sir, my favorite cd is “New Orleans”. This is because of the diverse musicans and songs mixed in together. Just like the city. I know you can’t put on the cd every current artists, but the older artists are just as good as the current market. This allows the “sound bite” public to know that good music existed before they were born. Music from the 1920’s to the 1980’s were great too. I loved good music from anywhere. Thanks for allowing me to sound off on this note.
February 6th, 2010 at 9:05 am
For most of my life, my musical tastes were limited to rock and blues. And while I couldn’t sing like Elvis, (yes,
I’m dating myself), I did learn to play the guitar well enough
to play in several rock bands over the years. While vacationing in the Bahamas several years ago, my wife and I were exposed to Reggae. With that infectious rhythm plugging away in our minds, we felt that there had to be a way to join
Reggae with our current music, which was Gospel. Our band director, a youthful and very talented musician himself, was
excited by the project. In less than a month, a fairly conservative congregation was witness to a Reggae version of
“Walk By Faith”…………..and loved it! The point being that music, in whatever form, from Bach to the Beatles and all
combinations in between, can lift the heart and soul.
Expand the music in your life and you will expand your life in music.
February 6th, 2010 at 9:09 am
Sunday evenings on the deck with Clinton Thomas as the Dub master giving us all sweet Reggae music. Then the adventure begins around the globe with the Putaymaya world music program. Bravo, Dan!
Your dream realized is a wonderful gift to the world! How I wish the Putumayo resources and
great website had existed when I was teaching school music — perfect seed for multi-subject lifelong learning.
I’ll be purchasing the Caribbean samplers (thanks for donating the receipts to the Red Cross for Haiti) and I’m looking forward to the future release of Rhythm and Blues.
February 6th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

February 7th, 2010 at 8:40 am
My favorite Putumayo CD is my first one, World Reggae. My boyfriend/future husband bought it for me as a gift soon after we met, and anytime I listen to it, it transcends me back to those first weeks of a new romance. I never grow tired of it. Practice yoga to it. Chill out to it. See the world through it.
February 7th, 2010 at 9:24 am
I love Putumayo. My nieces had a lullaby CD done by this company. I listened to it as much as they did! The songs were great.

February 8th, 2010 at 1:28 am
This music really looks interesting; I have not heard of your company before seeing it online on the Whole Foods newsletter. Is there a website?
February 8th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
I am wondering where the name of “Putumayo” came from. I love it and I love the music too. I am from Colombia (South America)and there is a beautiful area with that name.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Hi….You have some great music!! Thank you!!
February 8th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Hi, I especially fell in love with Putumayo Music when I discovered their cds for children. For 4 years I taught a children’s music class (ages baby-5) and often used the Putumayo Music for the free instrument play along in the middle of the class. Although I used the World Playground CD a lot, I eventually branched out to more of the kids’ cds. The music is joyful, soul-full and deliciously delightful. I hope the company continues to grow and prosper and produce more great world music for all ages ! Thank you !!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
The French Cafe is my favorite so far, it is so upbeat and always puts me in such a good mood.
February 9th, 2010 at 8:12 am
Putamayo was a great way to introduce my baby to world music. He’s now a toddler and a huge fan of all kinds of music.
February 9th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Pick a favorite-wow that is hard! I could never chose between Latin Grooves and Zydeco, I have worn both CD’s out-glad I put them on my iPod. All of my Putumayo CD’s are wonderful!!
February 10th, 2010 at 5:05 pm
I have at least 30 (or more) Putumayo CDs–of their recent CDs,I especially like “India” and “Israel.”
“Israel” is sadly underrated–and it comes with a GREAT recipe! It’s got great musicians like David Broza, the Idan Raichel Project, Moshav Band, and Tea Packs.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Putumayo will release this year…
February 12th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
