Alaffia: Empowering Women and Preserving Cultural Knowledge in West Africa through the Fair Trade of Handcrafted Shea Butter.

In 2003, my wife and I founded Alaffia with the sole objective of using traditional knowledge to empower individuals and communities in West Africa. We formulate skin care products with shea butter handcrafted by our women’s cooperative in Togo. Sales from these products provide direct economic opportunities for the most disadvantaged women in central Togo and also fund community empowerment projects in our local communities.
In late 2008, due to the global economic slowdown, we created EveryDay Shea in order to continue employing the 300 Alaffia Cooperative members in Togo. The Alaffia Cooperative is the first stable employment these women have ever had, and for the past five years they and their families have relied on the income they receive from the cooperative. While the economic slowdown is painful to many families in the West,
it is even more difficult for individuals and families in poorer countries who already live on the edge.
EveryDay Shea is our value line of fair trade certified 32 oz shea butter body and hair care products that retail under $14. Our nationwide introduction of EveryDay Shea in January 2009 was made successful by the support of Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods Market is our largest customer and their willingness to retail EveryDay Shea had an immediate impact on our shea butter cooperative. The demand for shea butter that it created enabled us to maintain membership, and we even added members for the first time in five years. In May 2009, we added four experienced shea butter crafters, and in July, we recruited an additional five young members.

To me personally, the addition of the five young women to the cooperative is the most meaningful achievement of EveryDay Shea. Adding young people to the cooperative means that they will learn traditional knowledge and crafts, which are vanishing throughout the West African savanna. Most young people in our communities no longer value traditions and cultural knowledge due to the impact of economic and cultural globalization. I strongly believe that maintaining traditional crafting is not only sustainable, but is the greatest opportunity that African communities have in getting out of poverty.
For instance, like the majority of African women born prior to 1960, my mother cannot read or write in any western languages.
Therefore, my mother and her peers are excluded from the economic system. However, if we consider their traditional crafting knowledge as economically valuable, then their skills are useful to the system. Valuing the skills of these women allows them to provide for their families, which provides a sense of self independence as they are no longer forced to rely on outside aid for survival. Furthermore, African states are not industrialized. In fact, they should not become industrialized in the model of the United States, Europe, and now Asia. The only sensible option for us is to focus on our traditional knowledge and indigenous resources embedded with moral trade practices. This paradigm can only be realized with a distribution platform for these traditional crafts and resources. In Alaffia’s case, Whole Food Market provides an important opportunity by making our traditionally based products available to the public.

My experience being born and raised in abject poverty in central Togo and my interactions with various societies around the world have convinced me that reducing poverty and bringing about gender equality in West Africa can only be achieved through trading African resources at fair value. The impact of EveryDay Shea, from the response of our customers in the United States to the effect on our cooperative in Togo, strengthens my conviction that it is possible for poor communities to become self sustaining without the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

I like that the products provide the opportunity for less advantaged people groups to have a job and skill that enables them to provide for their family in some way. I’m glad that Whole Foods doesn’t just go with the huge corporations, but touches the world with support.

What I like best about buying Whole Trade is the feeling of knowing that there’s no guilt involved. I know that my money is helping someone make an honest living. And I also know that I’m voting with my dollars for a better business model. It’s time that people realize that cheap products can only be made with cheap labor and cheap labor is often exploited labor!
February 16th, 2010 at 9:59 am
This is a wonderful article showing us that buying certain products can actually help people, and not just overgrown corporations. Go Whole Foods!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:03 am

THe better part of this is not only are you purchasing a quality product that little difference in purchasing the Whole Trade product goes a long way….. just a way to make a difference where we can !!!
Thank you WHOLEFOODS

What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products is the knowledge that producers and workers in these developing areas will be receiving a fair price. This will ultimately lead to thriving communities who benefit from the relationships formed through whole trade and better family living.
Whole trade living promotes social, economical and environmental justice and those are 3 things we can all appreciate!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:05 am
The best thing about buying whole trade is that you are teaching a man how to fish instead giving him a fish.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:07 am
I can’t wait to try this! Looks awesome!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:08 am
I prefer to buy Whole Trade Products because I feel like I’m closer to the resource like that; I feel closer to the people, closer to the harvest, closer to the real origine of the product. I feel the hands of the workers. I feel like I am thanking them personaly for their work when I buy their product.

A few years ago I found Whole Foods Market, what a blessing that was. You see I have a daughter, who suffers from Tourette syndrome as well as many food allergies and then we found out she was allergic to everything artificial.
Before finding your store I had to read every label and go to many different stores, just to find a few things she could eat. Whole Foods made my life so much easier. I no longer had to read all the labels, I could just go in and buy our food. It is such a pleasure. Even after ten years and my daughter out of the house, I still go to Whole Foods. I can only go every six weeks or so, since it is a day long adventure. You see, I live in Yucca Valley, Ca and drive all the way to Tustin, Ca. A couple of hundred miles everytime.
But Whole Foods has been such a blessing for me and I really do appreciate your store. So I would like to say, “THANK YOU” for making my life more enjoyable and more healthy. Jean

I love that I know someone is not being taken advantage of in the creation of something that I can personally live without. It is so unfair to demoralize and use people to create something so trivial for our society.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:12 am
There is no greater voice to be heard than to speak in the marketplace with our dollars!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:13 am
I think about my own two little ones, and how my choices can bring some small relief to another mama in the world. Knowing this makes the choice to buy Whole Trade a no-brainer!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:15 am
I am sorry to say that I have only just recently become aware of how and where I spend my money makes an impact on this planet and/or the lives of others. Purchasing fair trade products enables me to do my part in helping others that are often out of sight, out of mind. It makes me feel good to know they are receiving a fair price and not being taken advantage of.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:16 am
I love purchasing whole trade products. There is a deep feeling of compassion for the world that connects us through products being bought in a WHOLE trade situation.
I want to help others through-out the world and from where I live I can do so through this method.
We are all connected to something bigger and this is one way to honor that connection…
BUY WHOLE TRADE today and feel that moment of oneness- generating a positive global wave of JOY.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:17 am
I’m always teaching my children to “play fair”. That’s exactly how I think of fair trade, it’s playing fair. If the tables were turned I would want a fair price for my goods.
I am reminded of the book Under The Lion’s Paw by Garland. To benefit at the expense of someone feeling trapped and having to provide for their family is unconscionable.
I want my children to know that I don’t just talk to them about playing fair, but I play fair myself. And this is why I love Whole Trade. I trust that in buying this label, everyone is playing fair.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:18 am
I love knowing that there is respect for life behind these products. I like knowing that I am supporting people, not hurtful corporations.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:21 am
I think that this work you are doing is wonderful. I used to live in Olympia and had friends that helped out at Alaffia. I loved supporting the bs=business when I was locally there and was excited to see Alaffia products at my midwest Whole Foods recently.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:23 am
I couldn’t pick just one thing as my favorite. I love that I know the whole trade products I am getting are of the highest quality and better for my family and for the environment. Above all, I am happy that whole trade seeks to help better the lives of workers just like Olowo-n’djo Tchala who might not otherwise be treated fairly!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:24 am
I am so grateful to Whole Foods for supporting West African women and not exploiting them. In this world of max profits and tops sales, it’s very rare to hear of companies who actually appreciate countries where their skills of harvesting nature is so very important to their culture. It is one of the many reasons why I shop at Whole Foods and will continue to do so.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:26 am
I like knowing that the people who did the work in creating the products are being fairly compensated.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:28 am
First, I use Everyday Shea; shea butter is the best defense against chapped hands during the winter time. It’s wonderful, too, that I am supporting a business that provides fair wages and jobs for people. Also, training is provided so that young people will learn traditional crafts and culture.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:28 am
Just bought some Everyday Shea. Great product and it was personally valuable to make a difference with a fair trade product.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:30 am
I like to purchase Whole Trade products because I know that the money made is going straight to those who need it and it gives them jobs that they otherwise would not have.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:34 am
I love the Whole Trade Concept and helping those that need it the most. I feel that it is better for the environment, and also is a better quality than something made by the “big guys”. It just makes me feel better inside that I am making a smarter decision in my purchasing.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:35 am
~I would love to see the cycle of poverty “wiped out” in my lifetime, and support any product and or project that helps people to make a life where they thrive.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:38 am
Purchasing the Whole Trade products allows me to “vote” for this WONDERFUL program. I know I’m receiving better than the best WT quality product there is to offer, and at the same time I’m helping to support the individuals, their families and communities. Any chance I get, I’m educating my family and friends on the many reasons to purchase Whole Trade certified. Thank you all for the wonderful shea/Alaffia products….my favorite is the coconut scent

What I like about Whole Trade is the “unindustrialized” aspect, as mentioned in the article. PEOPLE making the products, caring about what goes in and what comes out.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Such a beautiful story and reason to purchase from Whole Foods. It’s wonderful to find economic value in skills. It encourages a resource based trade economic system instead of a monetary based economy. And how wonderful for the ladies to be able to support their families and be able to be so close to the earth with their products.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:41 am
What I like about Whole Trade Products is that, I can feel good about purchasing a product that give more money back to the people growing and producing the product. We like their bananas.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:42 am
I love the fact that it helps communities become self-sustaining and provides an honest income.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:46 am
What’s best is knowing that I’m giving value to the makers of the value I am receiving and its a win-win-win situation. Having travelled the world in my youth and seen for myself how often what we in industrialized countries take for granted is simply taken with no consideration for the people it’s taken from in other parts of the world, I LOVE Whole Foods Whole Trade programs. Buying Whole Trade products lets me feel like a conscious caring neighbor in a global community. Thank you for making the global community stronger with this work. Thank you for educating us about each other and for making it possible for people who WANT to trade value for value to do so:)
February 16th, 2010 at 10:47 am
I agree that it is very heart warming to know the story behind the products that we buy however the main reasons I buy Everyday Shea is that it is AFFORDABLE and not toxic.
I have health challenges and raising sons on my own…every cent counts for me. Thank you, thank you.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:49 am
Knowing that I can help make a difference, no matter how big or small, in another wonderful human being’s life, is priceless. This isn’t just another random purchase, it is a step in making OUR world a special place to exist. Do good today!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:50 am
What a wonderful write-up! Thank you for all of the work that you do! I am very thankful for the opportunity to purchase fair trade products and will continue to do so as long as I am able.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:51 am
I love Whole Foods for a multitude of reasons. They have such a huge variety of all the products I need, from fresh, organic produce to skin care and cosmetics. I recently made the switch to all natural products as well as organic foods, because of the growing concern for my health and well being. Whole Foods is a one stop shop for me in this manner. I like that I can get everything I need for a great price under one roof. It’s wonderful for the rest of my family as well. For instance, my sister is allergic to wheat, and your store has a fabulous range of gluten-free products that can’t be found anywhere else, or at least you would have to drive all over creation to get it. Not to mention, I actually use Alaffia myself. Their shampoos and conditioners keep my extremely dry and curly hair moisturized and in excellent condition, and I love that I’m helping support people across the world by buying these products. Thanks Whole Foods!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:51 am
Thanks for making this available whole trade makes great products and it looks like the ladys who make it enjoy thier work. Glad to buy a product like that.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:51 am
I will check these out the next time I’m shopping at Whole Foods. Thanks for the info!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:52 am
I always buy your whole trade coffe and is so good!! Now I’ll trie other whole trade product. If we can help with just a little that help me feel better
February 16th, 2010 at 10:54 am
what i like BEST about whole trade products is that they are helping people be treated more fairly. it’s sad that governments and corporations think it’s okay to take advantage of people who are in a difficult situation. hopefully, more people will realize that regular individuals are the most important catalysts. we can help make a difference by supporting whole trade products.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:54 am
Each day I am getting more and more conscious about what I eat and what I put on my body. But not only…I want to know that the product I am using it’s not only good for me, but also that it isn’t harmful to the others…That is fair!!!
February 16th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Living in integrity with the earth and each other.
Honoring our cultures and sharing.
Creative solutions.
With Whole Trade, everyone wins.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:58 am
I had no Idea that Alaffia made Everyday Shea! I’ve enjoyed the Alaffia line and look forward to trying more of their products. These beautiful women make superior shea butter!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:00 am
I love knowing that my purchase, besides being a great, natural product, is helping people thousands of miles away to have better lives.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:00 am
Because I know so little about where the products I purchase come from– I wholeheartedly welcome and support whole trade—especially when I know that the product does not harm any animals–and I know that my purchase goes toward supporting the hard work someone has put forth. It’s a solution more of the world needs to participate in.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:01 am
I love the idea that these women are learning how to support themselves and their families. I also love the idea that their knowledge is NOT being lost from generation. I whole-heartedly wish the rest of this globe worked the way that this cooperative worked. Thanks for the warm fuzzies from this story. This wonderful coopertative is in my thoughts and prayers.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:01 am
Buying Whole Trade makes me feel like I am empowering other communities and putting my money into something that I believe in. Knowing that purchasing Whole Trade products is helping to give workers fair wages and possibly giving them a better life makes me feel like my purchases are doing something positive.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:01 am
I like purchasing Whole Trade products because it serves as my vote need to let others know that I acknowledge the hard and honest work of others. I like knowing that the people who care and do the work actually receive the benefit of their labors. I am in love with shea. I use it to moisturize my naturally curly hair and my skin from head to toe! It is also a natural sunscreen when unrefined. Africans have used it for ages and we are lucky to experience its benefits. I cannot wait to visit Whole Foods and try this brand.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:03 am
I LOVE Alaffia products! They’ve been a great find for my sensitive skin. And to know there is such a laudatory backstory makes me feel even better.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:03 am
I love using my buying power to create new economic paths for the developing world.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:06 am
What you are doing gives me tears of joy. I used to work for The Body Shop and was a bit saddened by the buyout. Lauder is still using fair trade, but is using parabens. It’s refreshing to see someone go the extra mile like Anita the original owner of The Body Shop did.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:15 am
I will look for these next time I’m shopping at Whole Foods. Thanks for telling their story.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:17 am
What I love about Whole Trade products is the knowledge that purchasing them actually makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The fact that they are of exceptional quality is great, too.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:19 am
A wonderful post! Very inspiring…keep up the wonderful work Alaffia!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:24 am
I purchase Alaffia products at Whole Foods often…my recent and best disvovery of all is that neem oil has helped my eczema! This is one of the few products that has ever given me relief! I will say I feel every product I have tried of this brand is exceptional…The fact that the products are fair trade is a big selling point for me. I feel good about buying them for that reason. Wonderful products doing wonderful things in so many ways…what more could you ask for?
February 16th, 2010 at 11:27 am
I bought Everyday Shea after a quick glance at the ingredients and the price – it’s a great value and a great product. While waiting for my son to finish his bathtub play one day I read the label and discovered how buying this fabulous lotion helps to benefit women and communities in West Africa – a huge plus and the reason it is now our favorite and only body lotion.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:29 am
Love buying stuff that help others to!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:35 am
These amazing women in Togo have broken the barrier and proven that their traditional crafting knowledge has purely become a trusted economically valuable resource, trusted by Whole Foods, so trusted by me.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:37 am
I love buying whole trade and knowing that my money is directly supporting the source. Large corporations have overshadowed so many with their greed, it’s great to give back to those communities of hard workers that truly need and deserve it.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:41 am
I use Everyday Shea . . . well, everyday! I love the product even more now that I see the women that are behind something I enjoy so much and wouldn’t want to do without. Big hugs and thanks to all of them!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Whole Trade products help US consumers connect the dots of global capitalism and become aware of both sides of that coin – that our business, our relatedness, one with the other, can be destructive or beneficial. Unawareness is perhaps the worst of evils, to be so self-absorbed in the consumer culture that we don’t understand the true costs of this reality we’ve been sold. I appreciate the enlarging of the world, of the faces of real people, of the call to consciousness that Whole Trade products offer. We must do more that all peoples have the opportunity for decent and dignified lives.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:46 am
What an amazing opportunity that has been giving to these women! Vote with your dollars and support wonderful efforts like Everyday Shea!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:47 am
I love that I don’t have to worry about the products that I purchase. It also feels great to know that I am helping more than just me and my family.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:48 am
I love buying Whole Trade chocolate bars. Knowing that not only are the ingredients delicious but they are produced in a fair way make your chocolate bars by far my favorite!
February 16th, 2010 at 11:48 am
I buy whole trade because I know everyone in the process is treated fairly.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Buying a great product(s) + helping other women in need= perfect purchase.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:54 am
I love this line of face cream, cleanser and toner. It feels so natural on my skin, and makes it look so good! I also love the fact that my purchase can help the women of West Africa achieve their dreams.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:58 am
Buying Fair trade trade products from Dagoba chocolate to Traditional Medicines, even to the yarn I crochet with, makes me feel like I can make a difference to people by my simple, yet profound contribution. My father used to be a migrant worker so this is a subject very true and important to me: to treat people and the earth fairly, honestly and in the end we can all be well, enjoying these wonderful products being offered. It feels good to know that our choices can have such a positive impact.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:59 am
Thanks for the picture and story of the women. Not only do I feel good knowing my money helped the producers but Alaffia products are excellent! I’ve tried Alaffia lotion, which smells delicious and helps my hands in the dry winter.
February 16th, 2010 at 12:00 pm
I’ve been purchasing Alaffia products for more than a year now. Talk about combined sustainability, fair trade, social awareness, female empowerment and product quality ( purest shae ever): what’s not to love!! I live in Seattle so in addition to all this I am also helping a Seattle based company. I feel like every penny is well spent and my skin feels and smells good in the process!
February 16th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
I like everything about the idea of buying Whole Trade products – my top two reasons are that it ensures better wages and working conditions for workers, and that it promotes caring for the environment.
February 16th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
What a winning situation for everyone. Natural products for us and a way to provide a product and work for these women. Thanks so much for carrying these products Whole Foods!
February 16th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
WOW! Empowering women what a basic, but forgotten concept in our society. I feel empowered just from having gotten the chance to read this. I am excited about coming in to purchase!Thank you for sharing!

We can make the world a better place for everyone
February 16th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Buying Whole Trade is a responsible purchase. Just to know that I am empowering a woman to have confidence and provide for her family fairly,is huge. I would rather buy something made or provided from women like this than a factory or a large corporation. There is love put into these kinds of products and it shows in the quality!
February 16th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
this is a very touching example of what fair trade can do for everyone it’s so important to help people provide for their families with their skills love it
February 16th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
I love buying things that I love, but also helps someone else. It’s a win-win.

If anyone has ever travelled to or lived in or is from a so called “thirdworld” country(term I personally dislike”, as it comes with being classified as inferior,) . there is more to this than what is on the blog.. it is not all “nice”
February 16th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Too bad that the governments in some countries are so bad, that the poorer people have to depend on their products being exported so far away.. that leaves a big carbon footprint and a whole lot of plastic being used in the packaging.. so I am not sure if ahat is very green and even good at all , for production of something that is really unnecessary..

I like buying Whole Trade because I feel good about helping others make an honest living and feeling like I am contributing to the overall well-being of others and our environment we all share.
February 16th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
supporting companies/products like this really makes you feel you are making a conscience choice. A choice that effects more than the store, company you are buying from.. but the real earth of the matter. And how easy a choice is that! Your money goes here or there, why not where it’s gonna make a difference?
February 16th, 2010 at 12:52 pm
i like purchasing Whole Trade to be a better steward of the environment and take care of what God has given us. Also I love this idea of offering a trade and not just aid. My daughter is going to Togo this summer on a missions trip!
February 16th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Hello,
There are so many aspects I like when I purchase products from the Whole trade. First of all, the quality of the products is very good. They are natural without all the chemicals we can find in other regular products. When I buy a Whole Trade product, I know that part of my money is going directly to the local producer. I will be proud to buy products from Everyday Shea because it comes from Togo (Where my family is from) and in a way, it helps me reconnect with my roots.
I also find it interesting to try world trade products because it’s a way to learn other cultures and you know you are helping the right people at the same time.

I am inspired and touched by this beautiful story. It makes me want to be a better person, inside and out. I have fallen in love with the beautiful , strong , healthy women in this article. “Its a new dawn, its a new day, its a new life for me” thank you for sharing!

February 16th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
I LOVE LOVE this product! Not to mention fair trade, I love helping other women across the world. Thank you Whole Foods blog for telling people about this product and where/who it comes from.
February 16th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
I love buying products like these from Whole Foods. Whole Foods is truly one place that I trust when they say they are helping organizations. There are many positives and no negatives to list here. These products are made from natural ingrediants, truly natural ingrediants and there are no added chemicals and things that we try to avoid putting on or in our bodies. And, the fact that women so far away in a place where poverty in the norm are working hard to make this product and are being helped in the process makes it all the more worth buying. Shea butter is the ultimate for your skin. I’m exited to learn about this product!
February 16th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
This post says it all – Whole Trade purchases empower people. Great work WF!
February 16th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
It’s a win-win. The women (truly lovely) are helped by the sales of the product they make and then we are doubly blessed by our purchases. Blessed by the opportunity to help a great cause and blessed by the products themselves. I have found shea, especially Everyday Shea, to be wonderful for my skin and hair. We use it on the grandbabies too. Thank you!
February 16th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
The quality of these products blows anything you will buy at a big box store out of the water! This is just another way of doing something good for you and good for others, small changes may not seem like they have a big impact but to the people you are helping it makes a big impact. I love telling others about whole foods and the products they sell, my husband is starting to become more “green” everyday!
February 16th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
I love buying goods that are whole trade as the money I spend is helping to make a difference in the lives of others.
February 16th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
I think it is of the utmost importance that we help build the economies of developing countries.
February 16th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Hooray for the whole and fair trade practices that allow for gainful employment for these beautiful Togolese women! And hooray for Alaffia’s wonderful, nourishing products! Buy for yourself, buy for your families, buy for your friends, buy for your associates…and spread the word of using the kinds of products that have a place in changing the world. With each purchase we vote for an end to the horrors post-colonial poverty.
February 16th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Buying Whole Trade is important to me because I like knowing that, even though I’m paying a bit more for an item, it isn’t at the expense of someone who helped make that product.
February 16th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
I absolutely LOVE the Whole Trade product line. They make my skin so soft and smooth. In addition, the smell great! Also, the prices of the products are reasonable for the quantity received. Particularly, I absolutely love the Everyday Shea Lavendar bath wash because it is non-irritating and has a wonderfully, relaxing smell! Just love it!!
February 16th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
I like the feeling of actually helping someone and providing them skills to help provide for their families.
February 16th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
I love the idea of being able to purchase products that will be a benefit to me, other people and the environment. It is sad to think that other products may be the opposite, harming workers or mistreating them and the environment. As morality and game theory teach us, it is better for everyone when we consider the best for everyone. This is why I think it’s great that Whole Foods offers Whole Trade products.
February 16th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
I enjoy purchasing Whole Trade products since I know this action is enabling someone else to live a decent life for themselves and/or family as well as empowering their community and neighbors to improve their personal situations — thank you for the chance at trying these lovely items!
February 16th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
Empowering women to support themselves/their families and learn a trade lifts both spirits and purses! This is wonderful!
February 16th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
What I love about buying whole trade, is not only the amazing quality of the products, but also knowing that the purchase is benefiting so many other people. People that are concerned about our world, our planet….the footprint being left behind. People that care about their community, that care about what they do. And I love how much longer the products seem to last. A little goes a long way when you use pure, quality products.
February 16th, 2010 at 3:39 pm
I haven’t purchased any of your products, but I would love to try them out!
February 16th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
I support Whole Trade and Fair Trade whenever I can. I feel that their support, encouragement and expansion benefits not only the peoples involved and their lands, but the entire planet. We have to realize and act on the fact that we are not alone in this world or that our actions impact others. Companies such as Alaffia, have put into practice what others only talk about.
Those who can support these groups and thus help provide education, a living wage, self respect, and a potential career for our brothers and sisters, have a mandate to participate.
I especially appreciate the fact that we can help empower other women to succeed and have the ability to support themselves and families.
Thank you for this opportunity.
February 16th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
I will buy almost anything from a women’s cooperative! Helping women get out of poverty, have work with dignity, provide for the families is one of the smartest best things we can do to make the world a better, safer place for us all.
February 16th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products is that I can feel like I am taking care of myself while also helping to take care of the world. What we buy is like a vote, and when I vote for Fair trade or Organic, or what ever it is, my voice is being heard and my dollar is making a difference.
February 16th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
oh wow this is a fabulous article. Very inspiring!
What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade product is knowing that all proceeds go directly to the people who worked hard to earned it. To the people who need it the most. Not through some trickle down process. Also the products are usually tried and true!
Thank you for the great article!
February 16th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
We are all responsible for each other, and this program is an excellent example of helping others help themselves. And the fact that it’s preserving cultures is wonderful! All great reasons to purchase these products and continuing the cause!
February 16th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
I would love to try this product and help people as well.
February 16th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
What better way to show and share love than to purchase such wonderful items. The knowledge that something so simple can make such a big difference to even one person make my trip to St louis worth the four hour drive. Whole Foods is my favorite store and i look forward to seeing what all it can do with the help of its customers and employees. Great job guys, keep up the amazing work and God bless!
February 16th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
I had no Idea that Alaffia made Everyday Shea! I’ve enjoyed the Alaffia line and look forward to trying more of their products. I love that shopping at Whole Foods ensures that the people who put hard work into their products are able to better their lives. These beautiful women make superior shea butter!
February 16th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
I am grateful for every opportunity to make purchases that support my values- To help impoverished people to become self-sufficient, to be kind to the environment, to use products that are kind to my body, to use my resources to good purpose. Thank you.
February 16th, 2010 at 6:37 pm
Wholefoods is one of most remarkable stores that I have ever had the pleasure of shopping at. While there is not an Wholefoods store in my state, it is so worth the trip to a neighbouring state be able to shop for foods and items that I know are good for me and my spouse and that we enjoy so much thanks to hard working people all over the world. Please keep up the good work Wholefoods and everyone around the world who makes life better for all of us.
February 16th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
I love that everyone wins! I get a great product and in turn the people who actually do the work are getting the return!
February 16th, 2010 at 7:15 pm
I love the fact that I am supporting the small business man in developing countries. These people get to earn a living and be proud of a job well done.
February 16th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Shea is a wonderful moisterizer and whrn the products benefit West African women, it makes it even more worthwhile!
February 16th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
I LOVE Alaffia and all that they stand for. Part of their business being located in Washington lets me feel that I am supporting a local/small business, but it is also wonderful to know by supporting them I am helping another small business AND another culture…the one in Africa! Supporting their business lets them know they matter, and that they can be successful in all parts of their lives. And if we can all pay it forward, the impact is global
February 16th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
I love whole foods and how they encourage local when possible, and how they work to empower others. I have not tried this product yet. I am putting this on my list of items to buy on my next shopping trip. Thanks Whole Foods for all you do!
February 16th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
It is so important to purchase products which make a real difference in the lives of those who produce them. In this way, we can all make the world a better, stronger and more peaceful place. What a wonderful lesson to teach all generations….as I try to model this to my children and students!’
Thank you Whole Foods =)
February 16th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
While doing something routine and inconsequential on the surface, we can help an entire community, and have an effect that we may never fully understand within the “industrialized” world.
Thats why I buy Whole Trade.
February 16th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
The best thing i like buying whole trade is knowing where my money is going and knowing its going to help someone make a better living : ) Not making a fat cat, fatter
February 16th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
I like knowing that the product I’m purchasing has been made by someone that is getting paid fairly for their work.
February 16th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
What a powerful post! Stories like this are an everyday reminder that when we buy fair trade products we are supporting fair economic systems and empowering women who have been otherwise shut out of the global economy.
February 16th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
This story is exactly the reason that I love Whole Foods. I learned long ago that there is a big difference in free trade and fair trade. I say FAIR TRADE all the way! I enjoy buying items like these because I can see exactly where it comes from and know that I am truly helping someone else by purchasing it.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
I like purchasing whole trade products because it helps other people at the same time. I feel that I’m doing good at the same time I’m making a purchase. It’s the thought of empowering others that’s encouraging and knowing that one is not just ‘throwing’ money into commercial and/or sweatshop labor.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
I love that products like this help empower women and give them a voice. It also makes you feel good when your “money talks” and says such positive things.
February 16th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
would love to try this product(s)
February 16th, 2010 at 10:50 pm
Its good to know that buying these products help people
February 17th, 2010 at 3:33 am
I love the fact that the choices we make when shopping can make a huge impact across the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 5:43 am
To all those at “Whole Foods Market”, I must say thank you a million times for allowing us as consumers to each make a difference in the world. Each week I get to put my vote in for organic, fair trade products because you have made it possible. I love that I’m able to purchase fair trade items and to see that I’m making a difference for West Africa, other countries, and my home ground, the United States. The more I purchase the better and stronger our world becomes as a “Whole”.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:07 am
give back! it’s only FAIR!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:33 am
What I like about buying Whole Trade products: knowing my money is supporting a women’s cooperative that allows its employees – who would otherwise be excluded from the economic system – to support their families. The more money that bypasses large corporations and goes directly to a Whole Trade organization, the better.
February 17th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Planting my first garden in my new digs, and I like the idea of the group effort to encourage fair trade and helping those who love the earth and use it wisely. Also love anything natural with shea butter, the scent is delightful and the texture is smooth and silky. And the Chocolate by “Divine Chocolate”, happy to know someone out there is making something just for us chocolate lovers. I’m looking forward to discovering more treats for myself and my family.
February 17th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
Thank you for believing in women! We are providers of knowledge, kindness, and nourishment in the most creative ways. I think Whole trade products show how worthy and beautiful a traditional life is.
February 17th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
I use this lotion everyday- it’s awesome!
February 17th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
I just love to help – and knowing that I’m purchasing a great product AND helping someone else have a productive lifestyle – that’s just a bonus!
February 17th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
I love knowing I am making a purchase that will positively affect the lives of others!
February 17th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
The idea of one small purchase at a time to help the workers in developing countries is appealing to so many people. By buying the fair trade products, we can feel good about the quality and also know that those workers are treated respectfully, with better working conditions and fair wages.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
I love not having to feel guilty about my personal care purchases. It’s best for everyone involved.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
I like purchasing Whole Trade products. I’m purchasing products that I would normally buy, but my purchase benefits others. It’s a great feeling to know that I can help someone by making the right choice at the store.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
What a great product. I’ll be sure to check it out next time I’m in the store.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
I haven’t tried the products yet, but what a great way to help others in need while enjoying natural products as these!
I look forward to trying them soon
February 17th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
I prefer Whole Trade Products because I feel I am getting the best. That’s it!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
It’s often underestimated, the power the individual consumer possesses. By purchasing products such as these, not only am I making a difference the these womens’ lives, but I’m getting a quality product.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
Sustainability can happen with the help of such forward thinking individuals. As Ghandi said “be the change you want to see in the world”
February 17th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
I just finished watching a video on YouTube about the process of making shea butter. It is so important to fund programs where women can be a part of their economic futures. Research has shown that women are superior managers of money and can reestablish stability to their communities. Thanks for being a huge part in expanding our knowledge of other ways of life and supporting such a worthy cause. Well worth the $$$.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Personally, I would rather someone tell me how I can do for myself rather than just handing me a gift. It is empowering to know that I can help myself if I need to! This is what we are doing my buying whole trade products.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
this looks great – thanks!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Better care for the people of Whole Trade. Better care means a better product and equal worker’s rights.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
Whole Trade benefits our brothers and sisters worldwide that are often forgotten. I appreciate being able to put my dollars towards quality products that will help make a difference in someones life.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
Whole Trade products are a way to ensure that people are benefiting from their hard work. Great quality, economical, good for the environment and great to use. Love, love, love the shea butter line!!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
I like knowing that something I purchase can truly help someone–not just giving more money to a greedy corporation.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
With Whole Trade products I know what I’ve purchased was fairly traded and made with care and quality products. Only the best goes into Whole Trade products — something I can always count on.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
This is great! The more fair trade products Whole Foods carries, the better!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
I support the companies and people that are more fortunate in life that are able to give the chance for a healthier, better life to hard-working, less fortunate people who are not just looking for a handout. Rather, they are seeking the opportunity to bring a better life to their families and villages by various industrious means. For this, I salute you Whole Foods! I have been shopping at “Whole Foods” in the greater Los Angeles area since it began here as “Mrs. Goochs” Natural Food Store before being taken over by Whole Foods; this would be since the late 1970s. I spend thousands of dollars a year at your stores and I commend you for bettering the lives of those struggling in the United States and world-wide.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
I absolutely LOVE whole trade products!!! I feel like I’m helping the world in my own little way by supporting them!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
I think it is wonderful to have these women able to work, to provide for themselves and their families. To empower them and to give them an ability to be sustainable. Wonderful too that we can help by buying their products. I wish there were more companies like “Everyday Shea” that did this to help in countries like West Africa and all over the world. There are so many out there in third world countries that need help to make it to survive. We in a america and in other better off countries like us take for granted how blessed we really are. Even in these hard times we don’t even have it close to half as bad as people have it in third world countries all over the world…So thank you to Companies like Everyday Shea and to fair trade in general that help others. I for one am very thankful for all I have and love to help others in needed as I am able to do so. We all should. I believe One person can make a difference…It starts with one
February 17th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
I love that when I purchase these products, I am actually doing some good with my money!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
To put it simply – it feels good to feel good. Every small, random act of kindness, every effort to help those less well off or in need – these are the things that help our children to see how things SHOULD be. Our children, today’s children, are the leaders of tomorrow. If purchasing Whole Trade products helps to enlighten our children – just imagine what the world could be like in the years to come.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
I love the idea of supporting a concept that helps so many people.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
My mother got me an Everyday Shea product about a year ago and told me their story- which is truly incredible! It’s so nice to see some good coming to the world in a dark time like this
and if you can be, as is now rather trendy, both enriching your life and that of others silumtaneously, what have you to lose? and if all that weren’t enough… the products are fragrant, smooth, and natural. sweet!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
I wasn’t aware of these Whole Trade products. I will try them next time I come to the store. I like that this is a way to empower local communities throughout the world.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
There are only 100% natural scented oils used. Most other products add something for scent that is not natural. Giving back to the people of these these products is one of the reasons I will always purchase Everyday-Shea.
Thank you very much for leaning a helping hand to those that are in dire need of it. Together, we can make a difference.

February 17th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
Every product should be held to these standards. I can trust hold foods to give me the best product and also ensures that in every step of the way the product is made with integrity, honesty and of course organic!!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
I want to help others succeed.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
I like the fact that not only is it good for my skin but it’s good for my heart because I know that the money is going to such a great cause!
February 17th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
I love to know that simply by purchasing a certain product, I am positively contributing to the life of another. Purchasing Whole Trade products allows me to take part in a cycle that distributes wealth and, hopefully will aid in the end of poverty and the exploitation of the poor. Thank you for creating such an opportunity for us to enrich each other’s lives.
February 17th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Sustainability, softness, and success!
What more could you want?!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
I love knowing that I’m helping to support women – who, let’s face it, support their families more consistently than men – when I buy this great product. Everybody wins! Thanks.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Love products that support workers fairly, and that are just GOOD products that are hard to find otherwise…..
February 17th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Recyle and live !
February 17th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
In a world of commercialization, it is wonderful to see products made in the traditional way and empowering women in the process. Kudos to Whole Foods for bringing this to our attention!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
It is gratifying to know that purchasing a product has a direct benefit for the person/community that created it. The world over the oldest traditions are getting lost to the newer faster conveniences of modern society. I am happy to support the preservation of those traditions, and in this case to support these women in their trade.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
I think it just makes you feel good about yourself and the contributions you’re making to the earth!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Whole Food is helping the individual consumer be wiser, and in the process making a difference in the lives of others.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Knowing that Whole Trade products are environmentally friendly and helps workers provide for their families is one of the many reasons why I buy these products.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
I really enjoy the Whole Trade products.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Such stories like this make me travel 15-18 miles to the closest Whole Foods and buy products there. I do it because I know that Whole Foods is a responsible company that supports local businesses and small traders all around the world. I confess that I’ve never bought at Whole Foods anything but food, but this article definitely makes me appreciate that buying any kind of merchandise in Whole Foods originating from the underdeveloped countries, helps individuals who may not otherwise have any source of income whatsoever.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
I enjoy the great products and quality -pure products that i can feel safe to use
February 17th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
it is a feeling you can help someone while enjoying the great products!!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
I love Whole Foods because they do give background information on their products, as with this story about West Africans and Shea!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
I love this stuff and use the shea butter everyday! I am delighted to support these women and their endeavors.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Great article. Love Whole Foods!!!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
I feel great about buying products from people that are working hard to help themselves as well as the community they are a part of. In my shopping efforts I first make an effort to buy local in season products but when what I need doesn’t fit into that requirement I seek out the Fair Trade vendors where I know that the people doing the hard work to generate a quality, organic product are being paid fairly for their efforts.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
love buying fair trade becuase I know that humane conditions were used to produce the products
February 17th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
I love that I can buy products that are not only good quality but also help good people….thanks for carrying Alaffia!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Purchasing items that are Whole Trade is easy for me to feel like I am helping out more people than just myself. I have 2 adopted daughters from the West African country of Liberia. I have experienced what the value of the American dollar can do for one person in this country. It is nice to know that a corporation is protecting their values and helping the people who can really use the money to create a better life for themselves. I do not want to be a part of a corporation that is using and abusing the land or people of a nation. I am very careful about what I buy and where it comes from. I know what the life a woman or child can become if they are not given a quality of life that is sustainable.
Shopping for items(whole trade) that are a part of the life of people from my daughters’ home country (or area near their home country) helps me feel like I could return to their village and help them just a little bit. It gives a better quality of life that others may not have the chance to experience.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
I love that the Whole Trade products are giving women the power to become entrepreneurs! I think that this sends a great message to girls that they can be successful business owners, even if they previously thought that this was something they couldn’t do as a female. It’s great girl power! Thanks for all you do!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products just feels like the right thing to do. Helping to support hard work and being rewarded with great products in return is the best way to shop!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
It is so freeing and empowering to know that we are helping people on the other side of the world. Not only are we putting our money to good use, but we are also getting a great product in return! It’s like an endless chain of caring and love.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
thanks for a wonderful store and a nice promotion and products
February 17th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
It is great to know that a company like Alaffia allows disadvantaged women to help provide for their families and gives them a sense of empowerment.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
I love knowing that the people who are really trying to make healthy food and heal the planet are getting a fair price for all the hard work they are doing. I like contributing to the smaller farmers and avoiding the larger corporations. There is much more love in food produced in this manner!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
I love using shea butter and other natural body products, I think they are simply amazing for your skin. The great thing about this is that it is not just for your own good, you are getting the chance to help someone in need, and that is so fantastic!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
I like seeing the pictures of the people who create these products for others with their own hands and love. I like knowing when I buy these things I am enabling people and especially women to create better lives for themselves and their loved ones. I am sure they like being self sufficient and are rightfully proud of they products they produce. I am happy to pay a little more so that they can continue on a path to self sufficiency. I’d rather see my money gp to those who produce the products than to the already overpaid corporate executives who already have more than they will ever need.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
A Great Cause!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
Although I have been interested in fair trade, green practices, I am much more aware of it now and am “doing” instead of “thinking about it”. It’s not easy, but I feel that a trip to Whole Foods helps alleviate the question “Is this purchase going to serve the greater good? Will I help sustain the local food farms and coops?” I don’t have to think, research, and bring a list of names that I should trust when I go to Whole Foods.
Thank you for this.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
i love whole foods–i can find all my organic food in one store
February 17th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
What is Shea in its raw form look like?
It feels good purchasing a product knowing that it supports women’s talent sense of purpose in west africa!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
I am thrilled to have just discovered that the bottle of Everyday Shea which I bought earlier this winter and which we use every day is empowering and enabling women in West Africa to lead lives that help them gain skills and dignity and help them to support their families and communities.
We also buy other Fair Trade products because we know that people’s hard labor is being honored and that they are able to feed their families which they very well might not be able to do working for an exploitive individual or corporation.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:31 pm
It is so rare to find a company that puts values before profit, while not sacrificing quality. I love that my purchase allows these women to achieve goals and make a better world for themselves and their families. Thank you for allowing me to help make our world a better place for all.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

It is extremely gratifying to know of the work that is being done to bring economic viability to an area imbued with poverty and chronic unemployment. The knowledge that those in the Allifia program no longer have to rely on the assistance of political and charitable organizations is empowering in so many ways to the women of the Togo women’s cooperative.
One can see the joy on the faces of those who are pictured above during their work creating the Everyday Shea products. The purity of the natural ingredients, guaranteed by Whole Foods Markets, is incentive in itself for consumers to make selections from the Shea Butter body and hair items. That and the awareness of the invaluable contribution of enabling a distinct and beneficial cultural tradition to be continued by younger generations of natives of Togo make use of Everyday Shea a natural and rewarding experience.

February 17th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
I purchase these products because I firmly believe business is not only a source of empowerment, but a means to bettering a whole community. The old saying about teaching a man to fish, same concept. Plus the products are a way to try and help find ways of producing consumer goods without destroying the land in the process – the fear I have about the Amazon, for example.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
I like buying Whole Trade products as it makes me feel as if I am making a small difference in the world by helping those less fortunate to be able to strive for a better life for themselves and their families.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Just moved to an area that has a local Whole Foods and I am excited! Having never purchased any of the products and after reading this article I am encouraged to buy. It makes me feel great knowing my purchases help provide an income for the women, giving them an opportunity for a better life. It’s the singular fact that I can still purchase non-GM foods at Whole Foods. I utterly the most important issue on the planet because if Monsanto wins control over all the seeds in the world then organic products as we know them will cease to exist.
That is why the Whole Foods option is vitally important so that consumers can vote with their wallet.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:54 pm
whole Trade products not only make me feel good using them, I feel good buying them too. Win-Win!!

I like purchasing whole trade products because not only are they better than what is currently available, but they also help people in their livelihood. So it is a win-win for both parties – the seller and the buyer. Keep up the good work!
February 17th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
What I like best about purchasing whole trade products is the quality, value and benefit to myself and others. When I buy products, such as these, that are safe and healthy for me, I feel good about treating myself. The added benefits are that I end up using less of the product because it works so well and lasts longer, and the makers of the products are helped in growing their business and are able to support their families.

February 17th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
The fact that these products meet Whole Foods guidelines plus that they benefit deserving women with a hand up , not a hand out, is enough reason to try these products. Thanks for making a difference.

THIS IS WONDERFUL!!
I had never heard of Whole Foods Store but have just relocated and was told about a local store. Obviously, I have never purchased these products, although I have used products claiming to be shea butter. Having read about the story behind these products and how the women support themselves through our purchases, is enough encouragement to buy the product. The whole concept is just wonderful: helping hands stretching across the ocean. They help us with authentic, natural products for our bodies and we help them earn an income and keep their craft alive. BEAUTIFUL!
February 17th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Whole Trade is about empowerment! Supporting these products is one way to make a difference in individual people’s lives and build a sense of world community.

Several years ago, I spent a summer in Botswana / South Africa and will never forget the experience. Seeing it first hand, it is amazing how initiatives like these can empower people (through resources and just plain confidence!) to improve their own lives and the lives around them (especially for young women). I am a supporter!

Feeling beautiful is important to all of us…but what better way to be beautiful but by buying product that support a fair wage for the producers of the products that help us feel beautiful? The expression that “Beauty is only skin deep”. I disagree. Real lasting beauty comes from within us and then radiates outwards and is expressed in our faces….Supporting Fair Trade is beautiful because it strengthens women’s economic positions and improves their lives and the lives of their families and communities. Now that is BEAUTIFUL!
February 17th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
I will be so happy to buy this product when I visit the WF store again. Knowing that my purchase will help a woman provide for her family is such a great feeling. I also believe in products that are safe for me and my family and our environmentally friendly. The one notion I did not realize is that by purchasing this product, I”m re-instilling some traditions and crafting skills to local woman who may not have had the chance, or interest, in learning these cultural traditions and skills. Thanks for supporting this initiative!!
February 17th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

My wife and I are both users of the Every Day Shea Lavender and we love it. It’s never far away from you when we’re home.. and even have downsized it into smaller bottles for in the car and at work… It goes on so smooth and it’s quickly absorbed into the skin. Truly a life saver for skin especially now during the winter with the cold and the snow we’ve experienced this year.
Finally, the fact that by using this Whole Trade product helps support the women of Togo makes it all that more fantastic!
Continue the good work that in turn allows us to support your efforts with our purchases.
Namaste

I don’t want to be one of those people who blindly purchases products without realizing the suffering/abuse that may have been involved. I can sleep soundly knowing that i am contributing ethically to a hard worker.
February 17th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
When I buy whole trade coffee, I know I’m not contributing to the child labor abuses prevalent in that industry. That makes me feel I’m contributing to the world in a small, positive way.

I have been battling psoriasis for 4 years. I have spent hundreds of dollars on cremes, lotions, ointments, prescriptions, etc. I discovered Everyday Shea about 6 months ago. My hands are free and clear of dry skin and breakouts. I could not be happier with the product and the fact that I am empowering women half a world away is heartwarming, to say the least. The women of Africa are truly the salt of the earth! Thank you for sharing their stories.
February 17th, 2010 at 5:35 pm

It’s wonderful to know that by purchasing a product that it’s going to help a community learn and to be more self-sufficient through whole trade with the added benefit of empowering women. Coming into Whole Foods is a teaching opportunity for our future generations. Teaching my 12 year old son what the labels on the packages mean, one of which is whole trade. I will be passing along the Everyday Shea story so he understands more clearly how whole trade directly effects the lives of individuals. Thanks Whole Foods
February 17th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
I love the fact that by my purchases, I am helping an individual.
February 17th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
I love that not only is it a product that hasn’t been tarnished by the “big brand” companies or mass marketing; it’s a product that supports grassroots companies at a real, organic, tangible level. I have always been a fan of voting via your groceries and purchasing Whole Trade items speaks to exactly that ideal. On a more personal level, I try to be very conscious of the products I not only ingest but also those that I put on my body, so it is refreshing to know that products untouched by scientific labs still exist in today’s world. If anything, the presence of these products in our everyday lives seems to grow exponentially each season. Hooray for wholesomeness!
p.s. I agree with Natasha’s comment.
February 17th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
I feel so good that global business can benefit regular people like ourselves and bypass large corporations. We can help each other to build better lives in this way and share the good of the earth with each other. Each time I use the product, I think of the farmers who created it and feel that I have done some good in the world to help my fellow humans.
February 17th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
I knew that shea really only comes from 1 area of the world and I am thrilled that this is making a difference in this population! Fair Trade rocks!

I recently bought Alaffia Shea Butter Cleansing Milk. I found the price reasonable. I feel buying this product is my way of feeling part of a world far away from me. It makes me feel that my little contribution has an impact in someone’s life. It makes me feel engaged in the process in which Whole Foods stands for. I love it!.
The quality of the product is superb; feels like homemade. A product I can trust. Made with love.

February 17th, 2010 at 6:14 pm
Shea butter is such a wonderful product to start with, and then to have it produced by a cooperative that is doing such good is wonderful. “…focus on our traditional knowledge and indigenous resources embedded with moral trade practices. This paradigm can only be realized with a distribution platform for these traditional crafts and resources. ” Keeping tradition and making it sustainable and profitable for these people is truly a worthy endeavor.

I like to purchase Whole Trade or Fair Trade products because I truly value these products. We are showing these women that we value their creations, which in turn increases their sense of self worth, and the importance of their traditions and cultural heritage.

February 17th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
I like that I am supporting eco and social conscious companies
February 17th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
It is gratifying to know that a product that I may want has value beyond an anonymous financial transaction.
A persons work, whatever work it may be, should allow one to live with the respect due to one that contributes to the well-being of oneself, one’s family and community. Respect is a vital component of humane trade that has all to often been absent but when present, serves all participants with goodwill.
There really is enough to go around if fair is the first consideration. What if goodwill was the first profit that business seeks?

February 17th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I like buying more natural, handmade products. I myself do not have much mony but compared with African people, I have no right to complain. If I can help I feel priviledged.
February 17th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
LOVE LOVE LOVE being able to tell my children about where they came from and how we can help!

February 17th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
I’ve heard often that what many developing countries really want is trade. Means that they have a way to make their work count, to sustain themselves. It’s a vote with my dollars, something I don’t always think about but something that always applies.
February 17th, 2010 at 6:53 pm
What is there not to like about this? You are receiving an awesome product, at a reasonable price, with the peace of mind that everyone involved is benefiting as they should. I love the Ethiopian whole trade coffee, and am looking forward to trying these Shea butter products.
Thanks!

It is simply amazing that across the miles we can help with visit’s to our neighboorhood Whole Foods. Embracing a healthy lifestyle for body, mind and spirit is a challenge. However it is that Whole Foods brings so many items of goodness to us and aides those pushing for new success.
February 17th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
I’ve never noticed this product at my nearest Whole Foods. I’m sure they won’t be selling something this cool at Target or Wal-mart. I love buying fair-trade!

February 17th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Good Evening! I love Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps Lavender Pure Castile Soap! Lovely product and after reading the article noted above, I am happy to know that they value the skills of women too. Wonderful combination of a great product and helping the needs of great people.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
When I purchase Whole Trade, I picture an actual person, or group of people, in my mind. I feel confident that my money is going more directly to people who need it more than I do. I also love knowing that the products themselves are more nearly products of individual hands and care. It feels like a comfort of proximity, I suppose.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products helps provide an income to people in developing countries such as these women in Togo.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:13 pm
What isn’t to love about Whole Trade products. They are great products and you feel good about supporting people who work hard and are proud of what they accomplish. February 17th, 2010 at 7:15 pm
I love buying whole trade products! Not only do they supply women with opportunities that they would not otherwise have, but they are of a much better quality than others! To me it seems like everything has a more personal touch!
But like I said the best part is what happens as a result, women getting assistance they need!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products is a great way to contribute to sustainable development rather than “saving” by buying cheap products that exploit workers.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
I love purchasing Whole Trade products because I can feel good about the product I buy. Whenever I spend money, I see it as in investment. I want to support products that are ethically-minded, and that seek to help the communities in which they are located.

February 17th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
Sounds like great stuff.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
I have tried their products before and loved them. Its very good to support fair trade and products alike. We need to vote with our dollar and send a message shouting to people that we need fair products and we do not want luxuries if they come at a social/economical price for others.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
I love shea butter products, and I am more than happy to support Fair Trade efforts to support women who are trying to support themselves. Thank you for this opportunity.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
I prefer to purchase products that will enable others and directly support their families and communities. This is the way it should be. Thanks to Whole Foods for their efforts!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
I’ve found out with my skin so sensitive there aren’t very many products that I can use. After speaking with the professional you have in this area she shared with me great information on the Shea products( Everyday Shea). She had time to spend with me going over the difference between the shea products vs. other products that may not agree with my skin type. We tried on of the moisture products on my arm while finished up my shopping in Whole Foods. It showed in about a 30 min. period there was no redness on the skin. Upon my purchase she was kind enough to tell me If I had any reaction after using the product for awhile to bring the product back. I LOVE THE MOISTURE CREAM and two weeks ago I started with the hair products. I was very pleased with the products and shared the information with my Dermatologist who was pleased with my results in finding a product that agreed with my sensitive skin. Prescription creams were very costly and the Everyday Shea products are priced so people can afford great products without the high cost. I’ve been using the products for about 2 months and so far I’ve been very satisfied. Thank you and your staff for allowing me the chance to share my experience about the Everyday Shea products. Dianne Maxcy, Clemmons, North Carolina

February 17th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
I love the idea of “everyone can make a different”. If everyone commits ourselves to purchase whole trade products, a much better world can be created. While you are consuming the good, at the same time you are doing good deed. So why not do that!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:29 pm
I love love shea products! Thank you for helping africa!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:29 pm
This is wonderful stuff!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
I think it is so important to give back to the community. It is our responsibility to help others and protect the environment. The Whole Trade program allows this to happen to the producers in developing countries. The best part is that you receive high quality standards, it promotes better wages and working conditions for workers and cares for the environment!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
This is the way it should be!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:35 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

As an elementary teacher in my community, I especially appreciate your “Everyday Shea” product and want to thank you for your mission to support the economic & emotional well-being of the West African women & their families. I teach 6th grade in a Title One elementary school & know first-hand the difference it makes to provide support & encouragement for my students. Your mission & your product are to be applauded; I can personally thank you for keeping my hands soft & supple…handling paper all day and frequent hand washing make “Everyday Shea” an everyday must!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
I have been practicing good nutrition ever since my children were little, for over 30 years. I used to love shopping at your store when you were still Natures on Jean road in Lake Oswego, and I enjoy your new store even more. I appreciate the fact that a lot of your products are locally produced as well as organic, and I love to see you supporting fair trade practices. I know that my dollars are going toward helping people and not just supporting greedy corporations. I really enjoy your cooking classes as well. Keep up the good work.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
I always know that the quality standards are far superior to anywhere else, and I’m always proud to recommend Whole Trade products to friends
February 17th, 2010 at 7:52 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
I like buying whole trade because I know my money is being given to those who need it in a fair way.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products allows me to both think globally and act locally – and how nice to know that my dollars are truly making a difference in lives around the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
What a deal!
Get a wonderful product AND help people on the other side of the world. I look forward to trying these products, and if I can do so for free, even better.
God bless these women and their families.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
It is so easy to feel beaten up by right-wing rhetoric and its heartless agenda. Voting with my dollar give me some sense of comfort. Learning of the wonderful people who so deservedly benefit from my whole trade purchases is a bright light in an too often dim scene. It is a reminder that there is a world of good people.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
It is the thought of using my purchasing power ( hard earned money ) and making the world a better place. I do not care for the mass produced / manufactured products. Give me the local farmer or gardener or talent any day of the week.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Knowing that purchasing the food is helping very hardworking, wonderful people, and that the food is GOOD< HEALTHY FOOD!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Afrikan traditional crafting knowledge is so valuable and I am so glad that this way it will be passed on new generation. Keep up the great work you are doing. Thank you.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
I love that my money goes to support and empower workers rather than supporting a system which subverts and takes advantage of workers.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Hi,
I am happy to be part of this whole trade by buying the products.
Thanks
Samura
February 17th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
It is always nice to be able to use responsible beauty products.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
I like the fact that it’s giving the people fair wages and better working environments!!!!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
So many of the products that we use in the West are contaminated with harmful chemicals. “Everyday Shea” is all natural. By purchasing this healthy product we are contributing to the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams of its artisians Best of luck!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
That’s great. Food is a fantastic way of knowing another culture.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
Whole Trade products are truly amazing in that no matter how inconsequential the purchase someone may think they are making for themselves, in reality it’s made a world of difference to all those people involved that made it possible for that product to be on that shelf.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
I love purchasing Whole Trade products for several reasons:
1. I feel it is helping to educate the workers about better (ie, healthier and more ethical) growing conditions, which is one way to improve things here on Planet Earth!
2. it is supporting workers, who often could be underpaid and overlooked, thereby valuing and rewarding a
fellow human being.
3. I think these products are exceptional in quality.
4. I feel linked to the person who helped create, and produce the product. And, I also feel linked to that country.
I think it is a lovely way to bring this world a little closer together, while helping the environment at the same time.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
I love reading the stories of how the products come from field to market; we in the U.S. really have no idea how we get so many of our staple items, and it’s refreshing to see how people around the world have economically viable, sustainable industries that we should feel honored to support.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Whole Trade products sold at Whole Foods is a perfect example of people helping people. I thank Whole Foods for offering these products and whole heartedly support the Whole Trade concept.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
I really like that whole foods are helping others, besides I love the products!
Great Job!
Sandra
February 17th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
I just love knowing that what I am purchasing went through a socially responsible process, and that the money I spend is actually helping others make a honest living, and supporting Whole Foods in what you do!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
We’ve honestly tried everything on the market for my daughter’s eczema which still flares up often. The Everyday Shea line seemed to have really helped it ever since we’ve tried it ! It’s even better to know the purchases help deserving hard-working women too !
February 17th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Whole Trade gives new meaning to Whole Foods!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:13 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
It’s such a wonderful feeling knowing that purchasing Whole Trade products helps to empower these women and gives them stable employment, so they are able to provide for their families.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
What’s not to love about all their products! Finally products that benefit more than just the CEO’s of a company…
February 17th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
It is vital to directly support individuals as much as you can, with every purchase, every day.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Just another wonderful example of our spending dollars having real impact on people around the world. Thanks for sharing the story.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Thank you for providing the information regarding these products. I search high and low for these kinds of things and try to only buy products that meet these standards. Looking forward to shopping more!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
It is nice to read story and get the background. You realize how you are making a positive difference in the lives of women who need it.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Whole Trade products are quality products that are made with care and the people who create them deserve to be empowered by being able to run their own business and help their community.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
It is great to see that whole foods is carrying products from around the world that help people by empowering them. I love shea and now I know that whole foods carry some I will get it from them instead of somewhere else. thanks whole foods
February 17th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Whole Trade is the only way to go when it’s an option
February 17th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
The thing I like best about fair trade is that it values people above profits, we are all equal in dignity!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Shea butter was recommended for my dry skin (menopause) and it really works. Only have to put on once a day and it really keeps the itch and flaking away.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
I feel it’s important to support fair trade products and the people it represents for every reason, there’s no good reason not to! Love Alaffia facial care =)
February 17th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
What I like best about purchasting Whole Trade products is the opportunity to give a leg up to an actual individual or individuals, rather than a big faceless corporation that might or might not have good intentions, good manufacturing and distribution processes, or good investments.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
is terrific the help you bring to the women in togo.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Praise the Lord that these individuals are being recognized for their hard work and their service. What a blessing it is to be able to give back to them what they truly deserve by purchasing their products at Whole Foods. It truly puts a smile on my face when I buy fair trade products!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
One of the wonderful benefits of purchasing Fair Trade products is that the workers are earning a living wage not being exploited. Their children can go to go to school instead of working long hard hours helping the adults to make ends meet. The benefits to the families are in my opinion one of the best reasons to buy Fair Trade items.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
This is truly a wonderful program and industry. It is absolutely fantastic that these women have a chance to realize the modern value of their traditional skills. Industrialization has not been kind to Africa. So many families are torn apart as they strive to migrate to other areas in search of a better life. Many times they move away from long-standing support systems only to find themselves facing poverty and loneliness in larger cities.
One has to appreciate the ingenuity and intelligence, the necessity of programs like this. It is only by empowering these women that families, villages, and cities will survive and sustain themselves. When one culture is lost, the entire world suffers.
I have to apologize. I’ve used and enjoyed these products without recognizing their true value. My applause to Whole Foods, to Whole Trade and Fair Trade, but most importantly, to Every Day Shea and others like you – endeavoring to make the world a better place.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:24 pm
Whole trade is an incredible opportunity for those of us who are unfamiliar with the world around us, to help in ways this program allows. Without Whole Foods and it’s commitment to whole trade, I personally would not be aware of ways I can contribute to the world. It makes me feel better about the store I shop at in that they serve more than just their customers. Cheers!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
It is grounding and brings a great sense of gratitude that I have had the privilege of having the education to allow me to be able to access/ read the story behind the production of Everyday Shea. My faith in the human spirit is also strengthened with this example of others creating opportunities with their power and thus helping others be the best they can be and possibly more than they thought they could be.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Love using an effective product like this that has such “good karma”!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
By buying whole trade it is one way for me to give a hand up.

February 17th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
I like the fact that when you purchase fair trade, you know that it is helping people in other parts of the world to be empowered and have some control over their own destinies.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
I believe that every human being is created in God’s image and has worth & value and we should do all we can to support our fellow man(and woman!)- there but by the grace of God go I…
February 17th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
I am ALL for empowering women, especially low-income women. It gives a women satisfaction for a job well-done when she can contribute to society with her own hands. I have always been a crafter and baker and have given most of my items away or sold them way under value because my pleasure came in making and giving rather than what I could get in return. These women NEED the money, it is vital to their families.
Since my whole family has learned we are gluten intolerant, our lifestyle has changed. We read every label, even those on beauty products and only like to buy as close to natural as possible. From what I have read, Everyday Shea is such a product. I haven’t tried it yet but I plan to.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
I love the smiles these women are wearing; empowered is the perfect word to describe the joy in their faces. It is exciting to me that not only are these women being offered an opportunity to make a living, but that a critical part of their cultural knowledge and history has the chance to survive another generation.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
When you buy Whole Trade, you truly are caring for the world as you reach around the globe. The Whole Trade spirit should be incorporated into other facets of our lives.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
It’s great to know that when we purchase something HERE that makes us so happy, that we are also making other women THERE just as happy! Just look at the smiles on their faces, you can tell they love what they do, and I know they have the smoothest hands in town! I am proud to know that when I make this purchase that I am also helping these beautiful women! THANKS SO MUCH! YOU make me feel great!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
buying whole trade is good for everyone….
February 17th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
I like that the money is going to the people who produce the product and that is a natural product
February 17th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
The best thing about purchasing Whole Trade products is using my consumer dollars for a good cause. In my experience, they are also of high quality which is good for me!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
I love the idea of products where at least part of the profits give back to the society that provides it. By helping those in need in providing education and opportunities to support themselves, it becomes an ongoing “pay it forward” process because others in the country then benefit, pass it on to children, etc. I’d rather support a cause than a wealthy exec’s high standard of living. Thank you Whole Foods!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
I like knowing that I am doing more good than harm for the world and buying something nice and quality for myself.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
I am always happy to help empoverished women earn their way in the world. Plus these products are great.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
I try to buy Whole Trade and Fair Trade products whenever possible. It’s wonderful that these products and their profits help the women who make them.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
What a nice gesture ! When we buy these beautiful products for ourselves or for friends, we do good and help these women. I love this idea.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Being Native American I value the preservation of traditional crafting and knowledge. I am proud of Whole Foods for giving companies like this the chance to make a meaningful difference.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
This is one of the many reasons why I love Whole Foods. I love that they give back. You know when you buy something at Whole Foods you don’t have to question any of the items on their shelves. I also love the Whole Trade goods because the producers and workers that bring us our food should be getting fair treatment for bringing these wonderful products onto the shelves. Not only is it important to buy Whole Trade goods because the workers have better working conditions (which is extremely important), it is also so important to keep the environment clean and safe. This article was awesome in the fact that it is helping people across the world. Thank you, Whole Foods, for your commitment to making the world a better place.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
I love buying whole trade products because my purchases help entrepreneurs around the world who might not have the same advantages in life I’ve had. As a fellow entrepreneur, I feel really lucky that I can help them along their journey.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
Buying Whole Trade products is a win-win situation. The producers get a fair price and can continue the traditions handed down through generations, and I get a product that is natural and good for me. This is the way the world market should be constructed.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
I love buying quality, healthful products for my family that I know are helping other families around the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
The best thing about buying Whole Trade products is knowing that a very hard-worker is receiving his/her due compensation for the good work being done, and a life is improved.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
I like that it provides better wages and working conditions for the workers. Prior to leaving the workforce to be a stay-at-home mom, I worked minimum-wage paying jobs for 19 years. Even though I live a comfortable life, My heart is always with the workers who give their lives to make others rich. Whole Trade evens the playing field a bit more, and I am happy for that.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
I always feel like I am getting MORE for my money when I buy Whole Trade. Not only am I getting quality products that are NATURAL and hand made but I am helping to sustain growth and development of the producers. Not big companies but real people!!!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Every time any one of us broaden our reach to include others in our world is a good thing.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
In the end, we are all one big community, each one of us, in our own ways large or small, effecting the whole. What a great opportunity this is for us to collectivly have a great and positive impact.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:40 pm
I feel like I “know” the laborer behind the product and their pride in producing it. I know that it will more directly benefit a person rather than a company.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:40 pm
hope I win!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
I like to buy Whole Trade Products knowing that they are “natural” and that it helps peoples in underdeveloped countries.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
I travel an hour and sometimes two hours just to go to a Whole Foods… if that tells you how much I value your products. There has never been one item that I’ve bought that wasn’t just good, quality stuff. I have a wheat/gluten sensitivity so I feel at home in your aisles knowing that gluten-free products are in abundance. Now will you please open a store in Dayton, Ohio?? <3
February 17th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
I like that the products provide the opportunity for less advantaged people groups to have a job and skill that enables them to provide for their family in some way. I’m glad that Whole Foods doesn’t just go with the huge corporations, but touches the world with support.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Nice to see that such simple products that we use every day can help change the lives of others. Goes to show how being a responsible and informed consumer can make a difference.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
It only makes sense to purchase fair trade products. How could you not?
February 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
I love to see products made by impoverished women, giving them a chance to earn money to change their lives. Natural products are so much better for your body.

February 17th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Everyday Shea is a product I have been using for some time now and I feel good about both the product itself and the fact that its production has such a positive effect on others.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Great cause. Will definitely purchase.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Among other things, like livelihood and dignity, Fair Trade items encourage people to support themselves through means that are healthy for their environment.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
I absolutely love EveryDay Shea and other Alaffia products, not only because they are great for my skin, but more importantly I know that I am impacting lives around the world with my purchase. I try to buy Whole Trade whenever I can!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
I often buy Whole Trade products at my local Whole Foods in Louisville KY. Since I’ve been unemployed I am more picky how my money is being spent. I do not feel guilty that my money is going to a good cause now and I am telling all my friends and family about the Whole Trade products and they are a believer now as I am. Go Whole Trade and Whole Foods, you are both Awesome!!!!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
I love their shea products. It is great that they are helping to empower African women. I will continue to support them.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
Whole Trade purchasing needs to be a staple of all of our lives. It is such a simple way to do good, it is a no brainer. You win by getting an awesome product and the suppliers win because they become self sustaining, vital members of the world economy.

Making a difference is what our lives are to be about every moment. The work of Whole Foods makes it easier for me to make a difference in other areas of my life. I can live lighter on the Earth as a result of this collaboration.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products creates a global feeling to my shopping list and my home. I am able to share products from around the world with my family and they are able to learn about people that we would never have otherwise learned about or helped! Every purchase helps. Let’s spread the news!!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
I am so very thankful there are places like Whole Foods in America that take part in The Whole Trade Guarantee. What a priviledge it is as a customer to be able to purchase products that turn into new economic opportunities for workers in other countries.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
What a wonderful idea and a neat basket, too.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Good quality and the price.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
My family likes to buy Whole Trade products so that we can help a community directly and enjoy truly wonderful products!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
It’s great to have a company like Whole Foods who is committed to Global Whole Trade efforts. Whole Foods supports the local community and give all of us a chance to be a ripple in the global Whole Trade movement!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
In this time of mega marts and retail giants in feels good to help
support the honest working man.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
We have two woven shopping baskets that I just love. I totally agree with the founder’s statement of traditional crafts being the way to go, as well as sustaining culture and cultural identity. I highly commend his desire to prosper outside of the economic model in practice in most other countries. Africa has such an amazing amount of crafting and cultural, arts and music heritage-keeping it alive, and doing so in a manner that allows independance and freedom, is so important. I support fair trade in providing and keeping sources of income for those that would otherwise be without. I support traditional crafts and cultures. I support the feeling of accomplishment and empowerment it brings to those who actively participate.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
Good quality and good price.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
Being able to help someone else simply by purchasing great products is an awesome thing. I love it when people can be proud of their efforts and rewarded because they have the ability to produce something of use to others. I think when people are able to help themselves they become empowered and their lives are changed forever.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
love the idea that when I buy something it does more than just line a corporation’s big pockets!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
I feel empowered purchasing Whole Trade products, because I know that I’m directly helping the people of West Africa, not just some “corporate giant” out there. I can literally see the faces of the gracious employees who make the products that I purchase, and I am so glad that my purchases help these women provide economically for their families.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
I just absolutely love this. It’s a shame that often the things we buy may actually create more problems in other places in the world. Thank you for publishing this… it has made me more aware of these sorts of things. And it is truly rewarding and satisfying when you know that it is good for the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
I love what Whole Trade products/food do for the communities they are produced in and the people producing them. We often only see the end result and do not think about those that get that product/food to us. It’s important to be reminded of where our products come from and how lucky we are to have them. Thank you for supporting Whole Trade!
February 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
Regardless of political, environmental or economic persuasions, one of the appeals of buying Whole Trade items is that it comes from far off places (that’s not China, though China is far) that makes it feel special like you’re traveling to somewhere new and different within the aisles of a grocery store.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Whole Trade products create win-win-win scenarios for all involved–the product user, product makers and product sellers. Mindful use of good-for-you body products is kind of like giving yourself a hug as often as you use your favorite product.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
What I like most about whole trade products is the assurance of better wages and working conditions for workers. We all deserve that. Thanks for caring…

It’s just nice to know that there are other people out there willing to buy such products, maybe pay a little more to help others out, and just plain care about people, the environment, and the world. I don’t get to see that everyday unfortunately.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
It makes me feel good that I know the producers of the products I buy are receiving a fair wage for their work, and to add in a small way to the ability for communities to be self-sufficient without the intervention of international aid organizations.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:08 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
I have two girls adopted from Vietnam and feel that things would be so much better in their birth country if people were paid a decent wage to make their products. I’ve seen extreme poverty and like the idea of whole trade to help people from all parts of the world live better lives.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade Products is drama free. I know my money that I worked hard for is going to others who work hard and not just lining the pockets of large corporations. I know that the products I buy help supports others by empowerment. Thats the way it ought to be.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
It’s hard to decide what the best part of Whole Trade is. The quality is excellent, and I do really enjoy knowing that I am helping support a community instead of some giant corporation.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

I like Whole Trade products for their high quality, Plus, it is the right thing to do, for both people and the planet (economic justice is ecological justice!).
February 17th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
I gotta try these products. We have to use our economic power to promote change for the world’s citizens struggling for survival. Thank you for stocking these products.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
In addition to the obvious feel-good warm-fuzzies associated with fair trade products, I also like the quality and the fact that they’re just not the same old crap you find everywhere else.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
I love Whole Foods and the variety of quality products they offer. I was on a lavender kick about a year ago and that is what attracted me to Everyday Shea. The scent is strong enough to notice but not overpowering and the consistency is wonderfully not greasy! The amazing quality is expected from Whole Trade and from Whole Foods. But the best part of buying Whole Trade is that workers are paid more fairly for their efforts. What a great way to feel pride in oneself, then to obtain a job in which you work hard and are rewarded for your efforts.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
I love seeing the smiles on those women’s faces. It tells me that they are happy doing what they are doing and that it is making a difference in their lives. I wish everyone could be happy with what they do.

Love your products bc they are safe for my kids!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:22 pm
I haven’t made any purchases from Whole Foods- yet, but I certainly intend to do so in the near future. I wish there was a Whole Foods store near my home so I could just walk in and buy to my heart’s content. The smiles on the faces of these ladies in Africa speak volumes about what Alfalfa has done for them.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
I love the products and knowing that the money goes to an incredible cause!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

I would love to win!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
Whole Trade reminds me that I am not an independent variable. I am a member of a world, which is dependent upon others. This is actually rather beautiful, as it reminds me that, because of this, we all have power to change the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
we like to buy better products that are grown naturally and give an opportunity to small
producers worldwide to make money and live better.

February 17th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
I like to purchase Whole Trade products because the products are good quality, I have confidence that those producing the products are paid fairly for their work, and they have good working conditions.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
To enjoy and take pride in your work so others can enjoy your product. It doesn’t matter where a product comes from as long as it’s made with the consumer in mind. It’s wonderful that people from another country that is lacking the “material things” we have, but work hard can make a living to buy food and necessities that they need.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
I have been purchasing as many Fair Trade items as possible for the past five or so years. I feel good knowing that the people working hard to provide these goods are being paid a fair wage and not just barely enough to sustain life while the executives of the companies live extravagantly. It make me feel like I am doing my part to make the world a little better for all of us.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
A product that helps people become self-sufficient and contains healthy, natural ingredients is the best choice. By purchasing these products we help to improve the world as we care for ourselves.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
It is great to know that a simple purchase locally can change people’s lives overseas. And that we, the consumers, have the power to make a difference in the world by choosing to support those in need.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
I like the smell of whole trade products as well as how natural they feel on my skin.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:34 pm
I’m so greatful to find Everyday Shea soap and lotion last Summer at Whole Foods. I feel great knowing by using these products, I also help people in Togo and such a great feeling slathering “safe” products onto my skin.
The lotion is great for summer. For winter, I hand-mixed it with unrefined raw shea butter, a few drops of grape oil and a few drop vanilla EO. Makes a great thicker lotion. I’m addicted to Everyday Shea!!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
There are certain products; bananas, chocolate…; that I won’t buy unless they are fair trade so it is great to see there is a group of skin care products that are fair trade now. Plus, I like the idea that 10% is being returned back to West Africa to help them build a better community. Looks like a great product. Need to check this stuff out next time I am in the store. My wife loves Shea butter anything. Thanks for putting out a thoughtful product.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Looks like an interesting and positive concept for everyone involved!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
I love to see that by purchasing Whole Trade products, I’m helping people thousands of miles away.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Who doesn’t like win win solutions, which is exactly the principle embodied here.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
What I like is the quality of products and knowing that we are making a positive impact on the lives of others. It is great to know that we each can make a difference in the lives of others, in sustainability – and a healthful impact on our planet. Thanks!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
When purchasing a whole trade product it is not simply what you buy that is whole. So much of the world is focused on convenience and availability these days that capitilization and empires are outside of the spectrum. In reality our ignorance has suppressed many. Soul and tradition have become a rarity. Yet whole foods has managed to capture the beauty in simplicity. Purchasing a whole trade product or even produce from a local farmer mekes me feel good inside. I know that I am supporting clean, honest work untarnished by production demands. I grew up on a farm myself, and it brings me joy to support hard working people who have been kept at bay by the demands of the ever progressing world. I do and will continue to purchase whole trade products in hopes that one day the world shall glance away from their own needs and see who all surround them as a whole.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
I am glad that the items I purchase that are Whole Trade support fair working conditions and wages throughout the world. I can purchase Whole Trade products with a clear conscience because I don’t have to worry if there is a sweat shop or exploitation involved in producing the item. And on a taste note, Whole Trade chocolate tastes so darn good!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
Purchasing natural foods and products is very important to me and my family. If we are to preserve the earth for our children and our children’s children it is necessary.
Eating natural foods is not only healthy but is a type of recycling. Much like composting of spoiled foods, you regenerate soil that can be used to grow other natural foods.
Why waste anything. Recycling today allows all of us to prolong our future. The mother country, Africa, is rich with natural ingredients and I applaud them for the contributions they are making to the environment. Therefore, I support not only Africa, but all countries that have the earth’s best interest at heart.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment and thank you for donating 10 percent of the revenue earned from the sale of African produced products to help these intelligent people help themselves.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Whole Trade products are good b/c the money goes to those who really need it and the markup is minimal to us.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
I love knowing that my purchase helps support someone who really needs it in a way that is fair and honors their efforts and artistry.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
I love supporting the local organic farmers and getting more nutrition from the foods. In England it is required by law to let the earth phallo for 1 year before replanting. Since that is not true here, buying organically guarantees I have a quality product.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
Great Stuff!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Love this kind of company that creates a great product and enriches a community at the same time.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
My grandson has eczema; Alaffia is a brand I trust to use on his skin.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Whole Trade helps people help themselves and gives a sense of self-worth as well as helping them get out of poverty. It also creates a quality product for those buying it and reminds us that the newest technology is not always the best way to do things.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
Private enterprise and free markets make the world better and empower us all. Good health is a right for everyone and this is stepping in the positive direction. This is a great story.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
I think is wonderful to create new economic opportunities for workers in the developing world. I come from Guatemala and makes me really happy to see their work reconized and the help they are getting as well as many other countries are, plus it is great allowing customers to use their buying power to create new economic opportunities. There is so much to explore this people are hard workers and their products are grown organically which is awesome! and not to mention they are great people with great families. That is why I think there should be more people and oranizations like this.. you guys are doing a great job! Thanks!
grown organically or respect the Earth

I like that Whole Trade products help entire communities to raise their standard of living by offering better wages and working conditions.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:47 pm
I like that Whole Trade makes the world seem a smaller, closer, lovlier place. Witness the smiling faces in the story about Alaffia above and the the great, real story.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
All peoples of the world have talents and skills worthy of admiration and practical application in the marketplace. I pray these products will truly bring prosperity to the diligent entrepreneurs and workers who produce them, and a great wave of whole trade to prosper their countries and bless all their countrymen and women!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
What I like best about buying Whole Trade products is that I can make a difference and have an impact on improving the life of people who grow, harvest or make the product while I enjoy it!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
I can’t even tell you what a difference shopping at Whole Foods makes in my family’s life. Since we moved to the Arden Arcade area of Sacramento 2 years ago, we shop pretty exclusively at Whole Foods because we appreciate the mindset of giving back to communities, whether it be through the sale of Whole Trade goods or bag credit donations to local charities when we check out using our recycled grocery bags. We are living a more committed low impact life in my household because of the products available at Whole Foods. It’s well worth the time and effort to shop responsibly. Coming into the store is a treat for us in every way.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
I love to use Whole Trade products because they are healthy for me and work great.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Buying Fair Trade Products feels right. The workers are paid and treated fairly and the vibe of the products is better for us too! Good program, Whole Foods. Analaria
February 17th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
What I like most about Whole Trade: That so many have the compassion to remember humanity.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
I think the concept of whole trades is a win win for the producers who get a greater return on their investment and the consumer gets a higher quality food product while the workers benefit with higher wages and improved working conditions.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
LOVE shea, and glad to know that I can put my hard-earned money towards more than just keeping my body looking good. I can support myself and contribute to the positive experiences of others at the same time — my money is going twice as far. Awesome.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
I believe that purchasing Fair Trade products are a moral obligation and responsibility that we all should do whenever we purchase anything that is not grown or made in the US. Thank you Whole Foods for the background article about Alaffia and carrying your Whole Trade products. We all share this beautiful planet and we all need to take responsibility for the welfare of all its citizens.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Nice story about a great product. I love that Alaffia products will benifit communities in West Africa. Shea butter is great for the skin!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:57 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 9:57 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 9:58 pm

February 17th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
I love being able to help those in need – while giving my family a treat at the same time!
February 17th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
I love this! What I like most about buying Whole Trade is that I empower myself by empowering others. I don’t have to “buy in” to large corporations that squeeze out the little guy. I can buy nutritious and eco-conscious products because I can and I can make a positive difference for myself, others and our environment.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Fairness all around, being able to give to others who are deserving because they are hard workers, with best quality products. And the basket must be hand made and is lovely to have for years to come. My Thanks.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
Not only can i depend on Whole Foods Quality and Variety, but I am impressed by Whole Foods committment to serving the local community and international community. The hot foods section of WF in Santa Cruz is now part of my menu planning, providing more free time while enjoying the changing selections.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
I like seeing and buying products marked as Whole Trade because it makes me feel like we can turn our economic system around to help everyone involved in the production of a product. The more the consumer demands products like this, the more will be introduced to the market, which means more people’s lives are made better.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
It leaves a good feeling when I know what I am buying is benefiting others that are in need of some support. To many times people buy things with blindly and not knowing the cause and effect. Buying whole trade allows everyone to benefit. It also provides valuable lessons to our children by giving them a “teachable moment”. For example I tell my son where the product is coming from and who it helps then we can look in the map and get a global perspective. Thanks for putting this together and allowing everyone to share in a global awareness.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
I am so glad it’s products are helping the indigenous people of Togo.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
I love the quality and the whole foods price. Best store in the world!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
It is honorable that we can purchase wholesome products which help deserving people.

Culturally sensitive, 100% NATURAL and economically prudent?
It doesn’t get any better than that!
Just think about it; you can give someone a handout, and its a temporary fix on a long term problem, posing no solution for the actual problem. When you put a woman to work,(work with a purpose) it gives her the motovation to do more. It gives her hope for her family and their future. When her daughters see their mother work, those values are passed on. We won’t mention the postive self esteem that the woman recieves. For many, that lift in self esteem can be just as valuable as financial support. Allow a person to work and educate a person, they have the great potential to become the solution finders.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
Now this is the bomb, here are folks willing to use their talents to create a product that is natural to sell and using their hard work to accomplish the end result to sell. Their efforts are getting their town and area money without the need of bailout to better themselves. I cant wait to try this product.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products gives me such a sense of pride. Knowing that I am supporting cooperatives with a love of their land, their people and their future helps me appreciate what quality goes into the product.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
Doing good things for the environment and community!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
How wonderful it will be to have the opportunity to experience the spiritual binding these products create and to share this experience with others who will also benefit and share the love worldwide.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
I like to purchase Whole Trade products because I like the idea that as I help my family, I am helping the families that create the product. The whole world is one big family made up of individuals with individual needs, desires and ideas. If we all remember to thank everyone for everything they do and contribute, we contribute to the greater good of the entire world.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
This is a fantastic lotion–very softening.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:15 pm
This is wonderful. Whole trade products truly celebrate the individual and the hard work that goes into creating products. There is a cause behind the product and a story behind the creator. I appreciate hearing stories like these and getting to be part of something that impacts true people and not just franchises.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
Recycling and sharing to product the world in all aspects.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
I like that I can be responsible with my dollars.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
The knowing that our money is helping somebody else to make a better living for them and their Family .
February 17th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
I’ve bought a couple of their products (body and hand lotions) and they not only work great and include natural ingredients but it feels good knowing that I’m am able to help support this community.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
The most appealing aspect of buying Whole Trade products is the hope that people who work hard at providing goods for us in our self-consumed nation will have what they need to provide for their own families.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
I am so glad to be helping the women of Togo with our purchases of the shea products. This is all about being “light” to those in need. We benefit from using these products and they feel empowered and needed as well. Thank you Whole Foods! Sue
February 17th, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Knowing that I’m not unintentionally supporting something I don’t agree with, as in poor treatment of people
February 17th, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Whole Trade means that not only are you benefiting yourself by buying the products but you are also benefiting the people who made the product for you. You are making their lives a little bit better with your purchase.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
There are so many things, but working to create better working conditions is essential!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
I love that the products use local ingredients, are not tested on animals and help out the local farmers and producers. They use ingredients that do not harm the environment also.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
I like the fact that I help the people to have a better life by purchasing their World Trade Products. They can make a living for themselves and their families. I get great products. So it is a win win situation.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
When we trade with friends in other countries not only do we share delicious food, we promote world peace by raising their standards of living.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Indulging in these wonderful products is good for the skin, but also good for the conscience and soul because you know the purchase is supporting people that need it.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
I prefer Whole Foods products because I’m not only getting a great deal on some high quality products, but I’m helping out the world as a whole.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
I like the quality of certain products. Also, if you know what to buy you won’t spend your whole check on it.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
Nowadays, with so much access and gateways to help out our nation, I truly enjoy the idea of purchasing products and supporting companies that see the bigger picture; that actually care beyond political relations. With all the gaps that exist in government and business conduct, if we each make a footprint in support for programs such as Fair Trade or Whole Trade, amongst others, we can help unite our compassion and integrity to create more ethical proportions of sustainability.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
I believe it is very important the choices we make in what we buy and the products we use, because they both make an impact on this planet either in a positive or negative way. That is why I have been a Whole Foods shopper for many years (I originally found W.F. when I lived in Michigan), and appreciate them offering products such as these in their stores to help promote fair trade, wage, and working conditions for the wonderful people who work hard to make these natural formulas for us. The world would be a better place if we all did our part to help each other, such as in the Fair Trade Products.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
I had never heard about Everyday Shea and its importance to so many people in West Africa. I’ll certainly try their products. I thank Whole Foods for supporting fair trade and helping reduce poverty and inequality.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Not feeling guilty about where the products I consume may have come from!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
I love that everything in here I feel will better our bodies and lives. I hate to go in a grocery store and search for the Healthy food section and it be only a row or two. It is nice that most of it is reasonably priced as well. Thanks for that!!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
I find it is better for my family to purchase products that we know are helping the world and that we can feel good about using. Our family tries to act as stewards for our delicate environment and buying fair trade supports our efforts.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
Knowledge is power indeed. The North American indians also used the knowledge of the earth so nothing was wasted. They used the natural herbs and plants to promote good health. By using “shea” you carry on the oral and physical traditions handed down by Africa’s indigenous people. Wholefoods then becomes a vehicle of preserving a people’s heritage and gives me comfort in knowing the products I use helps them be more independent and vibrant.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
This is one of the reasons why I love Whole Foods – a retailer with a conscience! Let’s hope that someday fair trade will be a universal practice.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
The ability to empower families across the globe incorporated in my regular shopping is a wonderful benefit. The other is I love using Shea Butter, the benefits to the skin is wonderful!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products is that the producers care about the environment and healthy working conditions.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
I love these products! They smell great and keep my dry winter skin moisturized.
It is great to purchase products that support and empower women in Africa!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
WOW! Great products and very impressive story!
I love that they empower women!!!
I will buy even if I don’t win!
Thanks for turning me on to such a great product and tuning me in to such a great cause.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
WHat I Love about the whole trade products is that we help someone else out in need and appreciate them for their work while enjoying an amazing quality products.

February 17th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
I learned so much reading this story. I can’t wait to try some of these products. Thank you
February 17th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
I feel good about purchasing products that are helping people and knowing that it is helping people to afford to live who otherwise go without necessities.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:56 pm
I love the sustainability of purchasing Whole Trade products– they are sustainable and healthy for me, for the environment, and most importantly, for the people they are helping to empower and support half a world away.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
This is a wonderful article showing us that buying certain products can actually help people, and not just overgrown corporations.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
The time certainly has come to consider ourselves as part of a global community and help our brothers and sisters around the world in any way we can. To support their endeavors, the planet, and our own bodies as well and make this world a better place for our future.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
I am totally looking forward to trying this lotion and other procucts made by these lovely women. I have been shopping for a new “healthy” lotion and this just might be it. I will look for it the next time I am in Whole Foods.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Looks like great stuff. I love shea butter products for a variety of uses. Will definitely give it a try.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
What I like best about buying Whole Trade Products is knowing I am part of something that is making a difference. Thank you Whole Foods for leading the way!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Whole Trade products allow you to shop locally but think globally!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:10 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products is like making a donation to a charity. I used to think I didn’t make enough of an effort to donate money or volunteer for charities I cared about until I realized that I do it all the time! I do it every time I purchase Whole Trade products, or eat organic, or look for sustainable alternatives.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:10 pm
Purchasing Whole Trade products give me a certain feeling of connection with the source. Most purchases simply accomplish the goal of acquiring what you need or want. Purchasing whole trade gives a feeling of helping someone out in the process.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
I like because we can make a difference helping this people the other countries…
February 17th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
I feel as though we are helping each other. I purchase something that I need and that contribution is helping to enrich someones life.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
It’s very important to support projects and products like this. So often behind labels are huge corporations that often
leave the struggling little guy behind. Helping people achieve success and build personal goals and qualities in countries that are less fortunate, especially if you are a woman in Africa, is so important to the integrity of the world.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:15 pm
God created one world, we are all equal in this world. Buying these products puts a smile in heaven.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:15 pm
Oh! I won the food basket? Thanks!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
Often, buying something extra for myself like better-than-absolutely-necessary body care comes with the mental burden of, “Gosh, here I am spending this money on myself when tons of people ’round the world can’t even keep themselves clean at all.” None of that burden with these products!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
Thank you Whole Foods for truly believing “We are the world, We are the people”. The quality of all the Whole Trade products I have ever purchased has been very satisfactory, all the efforts you put into helping all peoples coupled with the high quality of your products is why I continue to make you my number one shopping grocery store.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
I love purchasing Whole Trade products not only because they usually are the best out there, but because I can also make a purchase that supports what I believe in.
First off, Whole Trade products, being made by real people who know what they are doing, do it for a living, and support themselves on putting their efforts into it, are bar none the best. They are natural, give you a wholesome sense, and are usually way cooler/unique/tastier than any of that other bad stuff.
Second, supporting Whole Trade is something everyone should do. i personaly think it is the only way to go. I hope one day to own a restaurant, and I want all my food to be organic and Whole Trade, because that way I can ensure my food is top quality and is the way it should be. Why would I want to give my customers anything else when they can have the best?
Hopefully this is convincing enough to make you want to support Whole Trade too!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
I love shea butter and it is the one of the best hand cremes I have tried to help my cracked skin. I feel good that I am helping the women of Togo and their families earn some money to get out of poverty.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
I absolutely love buying handmade/Whole Trade products. You know the person behind that product knows what they are doing and enjoys what they’re doing. How many of us now-a-days can actually say that? I feel good knowing that I am helping someone else out when we live in such a selfish world. It feels like it’s all about mass productions and every man for himself. I am happy to help out where I can and if I can get a fabulous product in return, it’s a win-win situation! Thank YOU Whole Foods, for giving us this opportunity and enlightening us all.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products is just knowing that a little purchase such as this can make a positive impact against exploitation. Thank you Whole Foods for providing an easy means to do this!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
That explains their beautiful skin!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:23 pm
The weight of the world can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Small everyday choices (like choosing Whole Trade products) can add up to big changes.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
Buying fair trade products at Whole Foods feels great! I get the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve helped someone by buying something that is good for me.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
I like purchasing Whole Trade products since I sincerely appreciate supporting local and international traders/farmers who strive to create, harvest, produce good quality, wholesome and pure products for appreciative consumers.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:28 pm
I enjoy shopping at your stores because you have so much variety when it comes to choosing healthy food for my family.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:31 pm
I love that these products promote the financial and personal well being of women. I have always used 100% shea butter as a conditioner for my hair so when this became available in this product, it only seemed appropriate that I take my passion for helping other women and for buying a useful product, and combine them for this purpose in purchasing these products. This being said, this is my reason. I love when two purposes come together to create harmony between people two worlds away who may never ever meet, yet change each other’s day to day lives, big and small.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:36 pm
I like the idea that products I purchase are helping the everyday person gain a fair chance in the world market.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:37 pm
With each small gesture
with each open heart
we can bathe the world
with compassionate light
The heavens will sing
and peace will touch our souls
buying a product I love from those in need lifts my spirit and connects me to the earth

Whole Trade Products are wonderful and I am happy to know the money that i spend is going to a worthy cause.
We must all help to alleviate the plight of our brothers and sisters around the globe. It is not if we should, but it should be we must do it because, we are all humans inhabiting the same planet.
I love that it is a natural product. We are from the Earth. It only makes sense to use what is natural to us.
I am happy that whole foods have the integrity and a compassion to support such a worthy cause.
These are the 2 major things that keeps me buying from this company!!
February 17th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
i like knowing what i am doing is helping people.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
I like buying fair trade because people are paid fairly and are not exploited.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
I love the fact that buying Whole Trade products means I’m buying more care than chemicals. More care for the environment, more care for those who produce the products and more care for the consumer.

I Purchase Whole Trade products because I can use them without shame or guilt. I like to know that my money is not only serving serving a greater good, but helping women who do not have as much power and freedom as we do here in the Western world…
February 17th, 2010 at 11:52 pm
I love Whole Foods for all the wonderful, safe, nutricious, delicious products. Also for the wonderful personal service by all the employees, who make shopping easier. You have the best
mediterranean tuna fish salad ever. Lovely selection of greeting cards —& I love the products
made by women in suppressed countries. I will try the Shea butter tomorrow. Last but not
least, the handy cafe for downing a goodie from the ready made counter or yum yum
bakery.

I like buying Whole Trade products because I know that my dollar is supporting something I believe in. Not only am I getting a quality product but I am also part of a chain of events that helps people who need help.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:58 pm
Purchasing Fair Trade items reminds me that we all have a right to prosper, and that we are always in a position to help someone else prosper.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:58 pm
It’s simply a matter of fairness.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:04 am
Our neighbor said he does not shop at Whole Foods because they don’t sell Coca Cola®. Well, I didn’t have the heart to tell him that that’s why our family DOES shop at Whole Foods!(I wish I could get him to try some unsweetened ice tea. Whole Foods rocks this category!)
February 18th, 2010 at 12:09 am
I love Whole Food Market for the knowledge, safety, of the products. The clean environment to shop in. The friendliness of the employees. It feels like shopping with family!
February 18th, 2010 at 12:17 am
I have been shopping at Whole Foods since the store opened in Winston-Salem. The Whole Foods approach to bringing fresh, organic, sometimes locally grown, produce, meat, poultry, seafood, dry goods and frozen organic vegtables to grocery shoppers here really appealed to me.
Being single, and living alone, I especially enjoy the hot food and salad bar. There is none better in Winston-Salem. Since eating at the hot food/salad bar I can tell the difference in how I feel! I would say, “more healthy”. I usually eat a meal prepared there 5 days a week, whether it be just a salad or a full course meal, I know that I am getting the most nutrious food I can possibly find in Winston-Salem. This keeps me coming back. I guess I am now a full-fleged Whole Foods junkie! I just love it!
Cordially,

What I love most about purchasing these products is that a portion of the purchase price is given back for community projects in West Africa. Other stores should follow Whole Foods example and give back to the needy.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:19 am
I am sensitive to a lot of “bath and beauty” products out there- I’m glad to know that my purchases of Every Day Shea products will benefit an individual and not a corporation. It’s comforting to know that a choice I make to improve my quality of life and personal comfort can make positive change for another woman in the world.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:19 am
It’s better to buy whole trade products, because they are better for your skin, and they help make better lives for people in other countries.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Shopping at Whole Food help me so with my food allergies and at the same time helps others in the world by buying fair trade products. That help the people of other country without exploiting them.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:22 am
I use Everyday Shea and like it a lot I won’t go back to my old lotion. It’s good to know that I helped the women who made my shea! Thanks to these women for giving me a chance to experience their wonderful lotion and to Whole Trade for making it happen.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:29 am
I tried the vannilla mint everyday shea body wash for the first time this week and I love it.
I can’t wait to try all of the other products!

I think it’s wonderful that we can make a difference in so many lives by purchasing a product line that is also paraben-free.

i have not use the product but would like to win to find out. kevin

Everyday Shea…..
For me, it’s synonymous to buying and supporting a business in my community because I get better service, and very often specialty products that the national chains do not have.
So, with Whole Trade products…it’s the same concept, except the products come from around the world and I’m still supporting the locals.
Best of all, it meets my standards for what products should be if I plan to put it in or on my body!

GREAT IDEA
February 18th, 2010 at 12:39 am
When people like Olowo-n’djo build a company around the support of community and the empowerment of a population, the world shifts. The impact that his work is having on women from one of the poorest communities in West Africa is a true testament to how we can all take on one piece of the earth that is not our own, make the soil healthy and help the people thrive. Fair trade is all about equity to humanity and caring for all of the people on earth no matter where they are from, what their economic status is or who they are. It’s about gender equality and economic viability. O is one of the most magnificent people I have ever had the gift of knowing. HIs passion and commitment to his people is extraordinary and he is changing the fate of his brothers and sisters and showing all of us how to care. Here’s to you dear friend.

I like buying Whole Trade products at Whole Foods because I KNOW that my purchase will benefit the producers. This is not always the case in making donations to groups that have high administrative costs or simply pocket the funds they receive.
Whole Foods has a reputation for honesty and integrity and that’s important to me.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:54 am
I enjoy “voting with my food dollars” and buying Fair Trade products. Every penny you spend on Fair Trade merchandise helps create sustainable economic infrastructure for subsistence farmers in Third World nations and also for American small, independent farmers and manufacturers. I can literally taste the justice in every bite with Fair Trade food. When I wear Fair Trade body care products my skin has a radiant glow simply from enhanced endorphin levels. When I purchase Fair Trade merchandise I do the “happy dance” and my wallet rejoices. Even if it costs slightly more than conventional products, I would feel better supporting a cleaner environment, “right livelihood” jobs, peace and justice.
February 18th, 2010 at 12:54 am
It’s great to know that we’re helping these women by purchasing these products.
February 18th, 2010 at 1:00 am
i like the feeling of knowing that my money is going to real, relate-able people and not giant corporations.
February 18th, 2010 at 1:04 am
I like buying really great skin care products made from a long tradition of crafting shea butter and knowing that purchase is helping women in Africa be self-supporting. It feels so much better than just donating to a cause because it means getting a product while paying a fair price that helps others have a better life – there is reciprocity in the transaction.
February 18th, 2010 at 1:19 am
Whole Trade is wonderful! A harder question would be “what’s not to like?”. I love it that I can do my small part in helping to empower our beautiful sisters in West Africa through my purchases. I love it that it enables them to make a living while preserving their culture and passing down their craft to the next generation. I’m pleased that Whole Foods has put a face to the women behind the making of these products through this article. It strengthens the feeling of unity that I feel with nature, and with these women half way around the world when I use these wonderful products.
February 18th, 2010 at 1:37 am
Loved reading this part from Mr. Olowo…”like the majority of African women born prior to 1960, my mother cannot read or write in any western languages. Therefore, my mother and her peers are excluded from the economic system. However, if we consider their traditional crafting knowledge as economically valuable, then their skills are useful to the system. Valueing the skills of these women allows them to provide for their families, which provides a sense of self independence as they are no longer forced to rely on outside aid for survival.” Its also so great how Mr Olowo has brought this to Whole Foods Trade, and has helped empower these women and this country and we in turn benefit. I have heard their Shea butter products are incredible.. tho I havent had the opportunity yet to try them. (is the gorgeous basket part of the gift basket? it is beautiful… I once had one made many many yrs ago by friends in africa in my favorite colros of blue and natural… it was a piece of art for sure…) with whole trade products “it is possible for poor communities to become self sustaining without the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. thank you for this giveaway.” graciously, Cathy B

These past few years my daughter and I have generated lots of inquiry about “those weird baskets you’re using instead of thin plastic bags”.
Thank you, womenfolk of Africa and Whole Foods, for the opportunity to elevate awareness of many important areas for betterment in our world.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:10 am
It’s nice to know that part of what is being made is going to help some of those less fortunate in the world. Thank you – you are an example for others to follow.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:10 am
I never feel guilty when I buy Whole Trade products.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:20 am
It provides people specifically the 300 Alaffia Cooperative members in Togo job opportunities to help provide for their families. It enables them to preserve their cultural tradition by utilizing their knowledge to create products. In turn their skill, provides consumers with products that they use in everyday life.
When I was pregnant with my daughter in 2003, I had to switch my lotion to Palmer’s Shea Butter because I needed extra nutrients to moisturize my skin. Major retailers (Target, Kmart) have discontinued selling Palmer’s Shea Butter in their stores. I am Filipina-Chinese and suffer from eczema which is exacerbated every year during the winter months. I’m constantly in search of a product that has the purest form of Shea Butter. I tried Everyday Shea Butter in the unscented form last year. It was great. Normally, I have to go to various Farmer’s Market in South Los Angeles to buy Shea Butter from Africa from the vendors there. I recently bought 2 tubs of it at the Kwanzaa Festival in Leimert Park on December 26th because I wasn’t sure when I would see that vendor again. I’ve just finished my 1st tub and only have I left.
Within the last 3 years, I’ve switching my shopping practices to include buying more Fair Trade and Whole Trade products that support various ethnic groups around the world.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:59 am
When I purchase fair trade products, I see the world the way I feel it should be seen, through my heart. When you view the world through your heart, one sees 20/20 without glasses.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:02 am
What do I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products? It’s less work for me! It can be a time consuming chore to read ingredients, research a company & their practices, compare brands, and finally narrow down the limited choices I’m left with in order to make a purchase I can feel good about. As a concerned and conscientious consumer, Whole Trade products are a no brainer!
PS- I love Alaffia body lotion! Thanks to Olowo-n’djo Tchala, and I hope to try the rest of the Alaffia line soon.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:29 am
Bought these products after my son had a dog bite that required stitches. I credit these products with the amazing healing of these wounds.
Free trade products support the economy and better business practices. They give mega corporations a higher standard of competition to live up to in the market.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:32 am
I normally only go to whole foods for food. I love shea butter lotion, and I will now but this so I can help others and sort of pay it forward.I will also try other products that these hard working women make by hand.

Whole trade products are help the native people who work hard to produce wonderful things, plus they are good for the environment as well. It is a win-win for all.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:15 am
Another reason to pay it foward…this is something I truly believe in and with good reason. If we all shopped this way…shopping worth the cause, the outcome would be phenominal. If all products had such a cause…it makes the product more personal – like a good neighbor.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:20 am
When you empower these women you are giving their children a greater chance of attending school, of bettering their family’s and their community’s quality of life.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:26 am
I find trying to be responsible environmentally, economically, and in all the other ways that we should to be daunting. We all are doing our best to help the world, but we know we fall down on the job most of the time. Buying Whole Trade is a small thing I can do to at least work towards being a responsible consumer.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:27 am
I like buying products that I KNOW are supporting people who NEED help directly!!
February 18th, 2010 at 4:34 am
I started buying at Whole Foods because knowing that they pre-screen products for stringent sourcing and ingredient standards removed one of the stresses of shopping. Whole Trade takes that one step further. Knowing that the products I purchase are not only good for MY body but also doing good for bodies and minds across the world only further enhances my buying experience. The pressure of investigating which brands I can trust is nearly eliminated with the upfront communications Whole Foods provides about the products they sell. Thank you!
February 18th, 2010 at 4:39 am
I firmly believe you get what you pay for. Cheap products either involve cheap products or exploitation. I do not want either of these. Fair trade speaks volumes for better hope in the future. It gives me hope that we will set up more fair trade agreements with more countries in the future. These products also have the advantage of using better quality ingredients. To have people get what they deserve for their product is wonderful and long may it continue, they deserve a massive thank you.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:50 am
I am excited to try these products. My reasons for doing so is to help women half way around the world as well as using natural products that are good for me and the environment.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:55 am
Helping people in developing countries by buying these fair goods products gives them a chance at life.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:59 am
oooh pick me, pick me! I like that not only are they fair trade but they are also paraben free.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:02 am
I enjoyed reading the post. What an incredible organization! I am anxious to try their products. I love shea butter and use it in many products I make as well.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:07 am
I use the body wash which is great for sensitive skin. It feels really good to use something that helps our brothers and sisters of the world while being good to my self as well.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:10 am
Knowing that everything I purchase is of high quality, healthy & almost guaranteed to taste good!
February 18th, 2010 at 5:16 am
The products that are made by these gifted people are excellent. The fact that they are made by these remarkable women and giving them the power to take care of their own families is a win/win situation. We all need to think about who is affected before we make our purchases and if it will make a better place for our world community. Thank you Whole Foods for bringing them to us!!
February 18th, 2010 at 5:20 am
I just want to say I started shopping a month ago. Love this store. I always thought it was going to be so pricey. Not so. Love your everything.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:22 am
That I am supporting people, human to human, humanity to humanity.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:24 am
It’s really good to be able to help people while buying items you would buy anyway.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:32 am
I love the Whole Foods shopping experience; from the (very) fresh fruits and vegetables to the organic meat and fish. For me, it’s fun to look at all the cool new, local products that appear on the shelves each week.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:35 am
Purchasing whole foods makes me feel better about what my little girl is putting into her body. Nowadays children are going into puberty earlier at an alarming rate, and the byproducts in the food is contributing to that. I just want her, and the rest of my family to be healthy and happy. Great story above! I am glad these people get the fair trade price for what they do.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:47 am
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:49 am
Being a women with aging, changing skin I really need some extra moisture right now…especially during this long, cold winter! I buy other Whole Trade products from Whole Foods because I know the quality is pure and passes Whole Foods standards. I trust them and have no hesitation about giving and feeding Whole Trade foods to my kids, knowing I’m doing their bodies some good. I can’t wait to go get some Alaffia for myself! Thank you for highlighting the story behind Alaffia…you sold me!
February 18th, 2010 at 5:53 am
I love the whole concept of helping people to help themselves.
Janet S.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:53 am
It’s comforting to know that my small purchase can help so many less fortunate than myself. Peace and Love to all! Thank you
February 18th, 2010 at 5:56 am
It is wonderful when we can purchase products and know that we are helping someone live a better life. It is much better to teach someone to fish than to give them fish to eat! Gosh, maybe the Bible has some great guidelines for our lives!
February 18th, 2010 at 5:58 am
I like purchasing Whole Trade Products because I know I am getting quality items while being a responsible consumer (environmentally, socially, economically, etc.).
February 18th, 2010 at 5:59 am
This is wonderful these women are getting a chance for themselves.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:03 am
What I like best about purchasing Whole Trade products is that I am helping the earth and other peoples.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:07 am
Shea butter is my magic potion… It has taken care of my worst dry patches, scars & gotten me through some unexpected sun burns. I would HIGHLY recommend shea butter as a Go To solution.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:07 am
I love that by purchasing these products I am empowering a women to provide for her family.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:09 am
Achievement, independence, personal satisfaction in producing a quality product. Isn’t that what businesses were supposed to be all about? That is what free-trade products do – support the local entrepreneur who is helping a community take pride in themselves. Supporting free-trade products at Whole Foods is something I do without question – I know the products are high quality.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:15 am
Shea products are wonderful. I’ve enjoyed purchasing Whole Trade products. The quality of the products is consistently excellent. The being able to extend support through these purchases to communities in other parts of the world is a joy.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:18 am
I like purchasing whole trade products because I know that people are getting a fair pay for their hard work and we are getting premium quality products for a fair price.

February 18th, 2010 at 6:22 am
Thank You Whole Foods for sharing the stories about different cultures and how their products have an impact of their survival in economic growth. I am glad to know that the products I have purchased at Whole Foods are helping to empower and support those(especially women)who sometimes(even in the states) have no voice.
I love and have purchased shea butter from local African stores but I plan to stop in this week-end to purchase items from the EveryDay Shea product line!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:24 am
I love purchasing Fair Trade products because I feel like I’m not only connecting with women from all over the world, but also helping them gain independence through purchasing their products.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:25 am
What a great story! I admit that I’ve not purchased any of these products when I’ve been in Whole Foods, but will the next time I’m there. I’m always looking for body care products that are moisturizing, but not loaded with synthetic ingredients. And if I can help someone in the process….bonus!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:26 am
A sense of self reliance is a core need of every mother’s heart – not just in Africa but arount the globe. Not having to rely on outside aid is true independence. Thank you, Whole Foods, for making these products available.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:28 am
I love buying all your products. Everything is so natural, feels very fresh and clean. Never over powering with smells. Which is great fo me as I am extremely sensitive to smells. I buy these products never ever have a problem. I alo love the fact that the monies help a great cause. I highly recommend to anyone with sensitivity issues.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:29 am
Good quality worth for the money.
Reliable products for the health.
Large selection of excellent products.
Pleasant customer services that make my day.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:34 am
I like knowing that more of the money I’m spending goes to the people who need it, and not the middle man.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:36 am
The best product ingredients meet extra good cause – what’s not to like?
February 18th, 2010 at 6:38 am
When I feel frustrated with my own current financial situation I shift my focus onto the situation of others who I can help. This keeps present how fortunate I really am. One way to create this shift is to buy fair trade products which allow others to make a fair price for their labor.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:38 am
It is a beautiful thought to think and imagine purchasing
products that we need on a daily basics could impact the gender equality of so many women in West Africa through EveryDay Shea. God Bless America and Whole Food Markets.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:40 am
I love the fact that Whole Foods, helps women stay empowered and keeps cultures that might otherwise be lost alive. It’s wonderful that this allows income which help eat away at the poverty they face everyday.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:40 am
I love that I am supporting international affairs while boosting my own confidence. When I feel good, I am ready to do good. When I support an effort to bring fair trade to the world, someone else may be inspired to do the same thing. If one life is helped, it is worth it. Thank you Whole Foods!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:40 am
Wow — thanks for empowering women !!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:40 am
What a perfect world it could be. A beneficial trade where both the buyer and seller get something they want and need at a fair price.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:41 am
I like purchasing Whole Trade products because I like getting paid for what I am worth and I would like others to be paid for what they are worth.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:41 am
We have been shopping at Whole Foods since our children were born. We trust that the products are healthy, fair trade and created responsibly. Empowering women and community during the economic downturn are additional benefits.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:41 am

February 18th, 2010 at 6:42 am
What I love most about the Whole Trade product line is that the workers producing the products are being treated fairly and paid an equal wage. All of the products are high-quality and natural, so that is reassuring too.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:42 am
Respect for our environment… Respect for those who help make these wonderful products… It’s a win win!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:42 am
I usually buy fair trade coffee – but have not tried other products, I will be paying more attention now.
I like that these initiatives serve to educate and empower these women, their families and communities while enabling them to be self sustaining.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:46 am
I have three children of my own….We have struggled at times, but I am positive it is nothing compared to the majority of others in the world…I love being able to purchase Fair Trade goods, knowing that the small purchase I make, will help those other families who are doing their best to better the lives of their families and who are getting paid a fair wage to do so.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:46 am
I buy quality over closeness every time. I will spend the extra money on quality products even when they travel long distances to reach me rather than buying local where polution and making an inferior product are the norm. If the local farmers and factories want my business, let them clean up their act. The outside of our bodies are just as important as the inside.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:48 am
To me there is no other choice but to buy Whole/Fair trade products. We are all humans on this planet trying to make a better world for ourselves and our families. We should all be paid fairly for the work we do and no one country should be able to take advantage of another country’s suffering. Buying trade products like this lets me know that I am doing my part to try to stop the exploitation of workers in other countries.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:51 am
Empowered mothers will result in nurtured and empowered children.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:52 am
What I like about purchasing whole trade products is that even while I am treating myself, I am helping someone better their situation in life. In particular women and thus children who are the ones usually pushed aside.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:52 am
I like how Whole Foods connects its consumers with business owners from around the world who are empowering their employees to create sustainable products.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:52 am
These are wonderful products that bring an unknown benefit to someone another continent away – pay it forward!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:53 am
I think it is so important to respect other peoples on this planet. Respect shows that you understand that their hard work is just as important as your own. Buying products that keep things fair in the marketplace allows me to enjoy the products I buy without feeling guilty for contributing to global poverty problems but rather helping to end them!
February 18th, 2010 at 6:53 am
We like to purchase Whole Trade products because I know that the money made is going straight to those who did the work, not a middle person. These trade products are from people proud to be working for their money not waiting for a handout.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:59 am
I like knowing that I’m not only helping the environment but I’m helping people as well. Just doing my part!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:00 am
I love the fact that purchasing Whole Trade products helps those who are in poor countries have a source of income.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:00 am
I like to buy fair trade coffee- seems to make every cup taste that much better since it’s free of guilt.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:02 am
I think these amazing women need to hear feedback from people who appreciate what they are doing. Also, I love that their products are paraben free.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:03 am
It is rewarding to know that by buying these products we are helping women to become independant.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:04 am
Essential Fair Trade Empowerment, what could be better?
February 18th, 2010 at 7:06 am
Thanks for a wonderful article. It’s such a great reminder that when shopping and we have a choice, we should choose fair trade products. Purchasing whole trade products is a small way we can make a difference in the world.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:10 am
Thank you Whole Foods for carrying products that are safe for me and my family. It is such a comfort to know that I can choose items from your shelf and never have to worry about these products containing ingredients that are harmful. Great Job!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:12 am
I like best about whole trade products, is that I have a choice and If feel it is the right choice. it is a nice feeling knowing that you are helping
February 18th, 2010 at 7:12 am
I like the fact that buying Whole Trade helps uplift people, and hope the trend continues toward this business model!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:14 am
Consumer consciousness will, in the coming years become a tidal wave of force and effect in the free market. Whole foods is on the edge of this boom by partipating so strongly in this movement of global equity and market participation. The products are great- healthy, pure, not animal tested and sustainable. The workers that provide them are not taken advantage of and paid a fair wage for their residence economy.
What more do you need to know? It’s a conscious decision-buy Fair Trade- change the world!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:14 am
Purchasing a whole trade product is maintaining integrity in accordance with my ideologies. Standards and practices in our society have made it too easy to not think about our actions. Too many people think that if it is sold in a store that it must be good. Most people are too busy to think about ingredients or the faces of those who made the product. Thank you for having standards and for being part of history!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:16 am
I love to purchase things that are from other countries! I can’t go there myself and purchase these wonderful products and I thank you for bringing these products to us in such a win, win situation. Sincerly, A Happy Shopper!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:16 am
I love that it ensures better wages and working conditions for workers.

These are the best products and not only are you doing something good for your skin, but you are able to help women half way across the world. Helping them to have a livlihood and support their family. Keep up the good work.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:20 am
Buying fair trade products directly benefits the people that make them, instead of a couple businessmen at the top. Thanks for making these products available to all of us and giving us more of a choice in how to spend our money.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:20 am
Purchasing Whole Trade products allows me to get great products and in a small way help the environment.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:21 am
I LOVE these products! Not only becuase they are great quality, but becuase they benefit the women in West Africa. Having been to Kenya, I’ve seen the poverty first hand. So it feels good to know these women are being taken care of!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:23 am
Thanks for supporting this program!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:24 am
I have not yet purchased these items but after reading the article, I certainly will.
Thank you for sending it.

February 18th, 2010 at 7:25 am
I come from a third world country and I know how much people from countries like mine struggle to earn a living. I’ve lived in the US for a long time but I always try to buy fair trade and local products as often as I can. Thanks Whole Foods for supporting the amazing skills and for respecting whole trade workers around the world.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:25 am
I actually was able to meet the owner of teh Alaffia company! I got to hear how these products benefit the women and the products are high quality!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:26 am
As we get older our skin seems to get dryer. I use these shea products as well as using them on my mother who is in a nursing home. They are wonderful.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:26 am
I am very much interested in this “Whole Trade” concept of producing Natural, Organic Skin Care Products (free of preservatives & other harmful chemicals). This is the first I’ve heard anything about these products. Such a wonderful concept to not only have these beautiful, healthy products, but to also know that purchasing them is helping to employ women in a culture very different from our own. Their knowledge & skills in creating these products is exceptional. I’m always searching for healthy/organic skin care products, now it looks like I’ve found what I’ve been looking for. Thank you for sharing this story and bringing these products to America.
Regards, Brenda
February 18th, 2010 at 7:27 am
I like the idea that by purchasing these products we are helping to ensure fair work practices. If everyone does a little it ends up being a lot.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:27 am
In three simple woods the main reason I purchase whole trade products is because in doing so it RESPECTS THE Earth.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:29 am
Even in times of economic hardship in this country, we have so much more than many others around the world. Our purchasing power can make a difference, and all it takes is informed choice upon our part. It is our responsibility to take care of each other…whether next door or on the other side of the earth!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:29 am
I like the feeling I get knowing I have supported something that is doing good

February 18th, 2010 at 7:46 am
Everyday Shea’s story is compelling and their mission to empower women and promote fair trade in West Africa should stand as a model for businesses around the world. I am pleased to know that Whole Foods supports this endeavor!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:47 am
Wow! I love Whole Foods! It has made me feel like a “whole” person again. It’s all about going back to basics. In a world were the focus has changed from purity to production, Whole Trade is a welcomed change. The pure simplicity of the products, ingredients, etc. is how we all started and how our ancestors thrived. I love the Everyday Shea shampoo and conditioner is two of my favorite products. After years of relaxing and overprocessing my hair, I have allowed my hair to return to it’s natural state. The Everyday Shea shampoo and conditioner is just what my natural hair needed. And the plus of those great products is that in helping me maintain my “whole” hair, I am helping the people who have made such great products available. It’s a wonderful part of this great big circle of life. I love that their labor of love is being rewarded justly and respected. I am honored to have to opportunity to use products that are good for me, the environment and mankind as well!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:47 am
We teach our children how to treat and respect the Earth and it’s people. Purchasing Fair Trade allows us to walk our talk
February 18th, 2010 at 7:48 am
I like that we customers have a part in knowing we’re helping to create Good, Healthy economic opportunities for workers in the developing world. I also appreciate the “certified Organic” labeling. Thank you for making this a WIN-WIN for us all.

February 18th, 2010 at 7:49 am

February 18th, 2010 at 7:49 am
I like getting a quality product while knowing that I’m helping an industrious person a half world away!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:50 am
Natural organic products are the best products we can use to maintain our health and protect our body. Knowing a product comes from a place and people that need the work to improve their standard of living makes it all the better. I will choose to buy a product I know will help others to achieve a better life before choosing other products and knowing it is chemical free and natural – well it doesn’t get better than that!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:51 am
I love to purchase Whole Trade Products, because they are wonderful for the environment and I love the way I support something bigger than myself. It is important for me to pay it forward and even though I don’t have much as a single mother of two, I do what I can and with the Whole trade Products I know that it makes a difference. I am also showing my children that our world and everyone in it makes a difference and is important.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:52 am
I love knowing that my purchases make someone else’s life better, especially half the world away. Explaining this to my eight year old daughter is wonderful, having her tell other people is priceless.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:52 am
I like purchasing Whole Trade products because I know that I have nothing to worry about as far as chemicals & animal testing. I love that I am doing good for my body by using these products rather than others that may do harm. I also like knowing that the love of another human being was put into the making of this product. Everyday Shea is my FAVORITE lotion, I use it on my 21 month old son also, with no worries.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Buying Whole Trade products is a win-win for both consumer and the trade. As someone who is a strong supporter of micro-credit programs, providing business opportunities to individuals through micro-loans and/or buying fair trade and Whole Trade products is one of the best long term solutions to ending poverty.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:54 am
I like to purchase whole trade items because I feel that the benefit to the people who make them will last a lot longer and be much more beneficial than buying from a big corporation.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:54 am
This is a great article. Thank you Whole Foods for all you do locally and around the world.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:55 am
I love Whole Trade products because they are reasonably priced for solid quality goods. This was a great article, I had no idea that this coop was supplying so many jobs to West African women. I am always impressed by WT and their willingness to support wonderful causes and to litterally make the world a better place. Kudos!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Whole Trade Products are one small way we can support and love each other around the world – WWJD – only wish we could do more.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:56 am
Just knowing that my support of these products enables women to provide for their families, thereby increasing the opportunities for their children and giving women a sense of independence and capability, is reason enough to buy whole trade. The bonus is that I love knowing that the products are safe, made from natural ingredients, and nourishing for my body and soul!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:57 am
Knowing that I am purchasing a Whole Trade makes me feel very pleased because, I know; in my heart we are helping lives by making a difference. In most of all; by making a difference we are getting quality products. Thank You SO MUCH :0) Whole Trade.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:57 am
I appreciate all that Whole Foods Market does for us – the public.

To have access to these wonderful world items is a blessing to all of us.

They provide more money to producers, ensures better wages and working conditions for workers, and cares for the environment.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:00 am
buying products that our good for my body as well as good for the people who create them is a complete win-win. i couldn’t think of a better way to spend my money.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:00 am
Hope, unexpected blessings, and healing via Fair Trade dealing — what could be a better exchange?
February 18th, 2010 at 8:00 am
I’m blessed and privileged, living in the United States where I have access to everything I need and just about anything I want. I also know that I do not live in a vacuum. What I do effects others up and down the culture. I also believe that the culture is only as strong as the least of its members. As we move more and more into a world culture, it behooves me to do what I can to strengthen the least of us, even an ocean and a continent away.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:01 am
I wish that the pictures had the ladies names. Also, is that shea butter in their pots?
I will definitely check out this product on my next trip to Whole Foods. Thanks much for efforts such as this!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:01 am
I have purchased a number of these items and will continue to do so because the quality of the product(s) has always been excellent along with environmentally friendly packaging.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:03 am
I have been personally involved with rural economic development in Latin America, and believe that Fair Trade practices are a great way to equalize the ‘playing field’ for many peoples around the globe. It always feels better when I can trust that my lifestyle choices are fostering positive sustainable living – we’re all on this planet together, and we CAN make a good ‘go of it! Thank you Whole Foods for offering and supporting such opportunities….
February 18th, 2010 at 8:04 am
I think it is wonderful that this article sets an example and should be the standard for any trade products. It is also comforting to know that when I buy these products, it is guilt free.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:04 am
What do I like best….. Well it is the RIGHT THING TO DO!!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:04 am
Such a joy that buying quality products benefits others and allows each of us the privilege of paying a fair price to those who so deserve it.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:06 am
It’s so easy to not think about where the things we use daily come from, and yet if we did, we’d probably stop buying many of the products we do now. Thank you for highlighting products and companies we can feel comfortable supporting.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:06 am
Excellent products and the short and long term impact on humanity is impactful.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:06 am
How wonderful….a great story and product.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:07 am
I love, love, love the Mineral Fusion Blush for the following reasons: first and best of all it contains no red dye (which causes my skin to break out); the color (airy) is beautiful and natural looking; it lasts all day whether in humid summer or arid winter; I purchased it 7 months ago, use it everyday and there is still a ton of it left in the container.
I have a fair to light complexion; green eyes; dark blonde-light brown hair; the make-up artist at Whole Foods recommended the color “airy” for me.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:07 am
I just love purchasing products that are not only good for my body, but that I know help those who make them! So much of what is available out there we have no idea as to what harsh, dangerous and simply horrible conditions the workers are under. With Whole Trade, I know that is not the case! Thanks for making these products affordable for me and helpful for others!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:08 am
…and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
February 18th, 2010 at 8:09 am
What I like most about purchasing at Whole Foods is the knowledgeable employees. If I have any question at all whether small or large, they know the answer or find someone who does. They never act like you’re putting them out. I get the feeling when I shop at Whole Foods that everything, from the produce to the meat department to every department, is done in excellence!

Thank you Whole Foods for such an inspiring story! Knowledge is power in our efforts to support fair trade and whole foods.
And Everyday Shea is a wonderful product.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:09 am
Thank you, Whole Foods, for supporting wonderful companies such as this one. Companies like these who give women a good job are rarely supported by big corporations. Bravo, Whole Foods! I will definitely try this product.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:10 am
Affordable, .. and good for you !
February 18th, 2010 at 8:11 am
What an amazing company! I had no idea of the support and community involvement Everday Shea provides. I am traveling to Africa this summer to work in the orphanages there, and so it is a near and dear cause to my own heart. You can expect that I will support any product that feels the same and does the right thing! Thank you!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:12 am
I often wonder who makes or has some hand in the products I use around the house. Although I may never know the individuals who do, it satisfies me to know that I can impact someone else’s life with my product selection. I am impressed by this story and will look for the Everyday Shea on my next trip to Whole Foods.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:12 am
I grew up in Africa – I saw the abject poverty 1st hand – Now I am raising a little girl in one of the richest nations on earth – It is our responsibility to use that wealth and power to enable others to raise their children with dignity and not in poverty wherever in the world they may be. Whole Trade programs are a contribution in that direction.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:13 am
I specifically look for whole trade products to purchase because I understand in doing so I am helping marginalized producers in developing countries promote sustainability,… I am helping to empower them with economic self sufficiency, and maintain their traditional lifestyle with dignity.
This gives each successful individual a sense of pride…which promotes a happier and healthier family unit and provides “social capital” for the community at large.
It is a “win- win situation” for all of us !
February 18th, 2010 at 8:13 am
It is great pride in making these items that a tracks me to fair trade. Things are not made in huge powerful evil plants that use bad ingredients. Everything is pure and natural the way God intended it to be within all. Understanding the ability of others in dire need and helping them gain full potential of what they do. Great items!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:13 am
Thank you Whole Foods for keeping your customers informed about Whole Trade. You are making the world a better place by helping us help others.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:14 am
I love the smell of the meat at Whole Foods. It looks & smells much more appetizing than commercially grown meat. I also love buying things here knowing it is safe for me & my family.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:15 am
Simply put, Whole Trade makes the world better for everyone. By committing to better environmental practice, better working conditions, and fair payment for producers, we the consumers are helping to improve things across the whole chain of production. And we get high quality products, too.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:16 am
I like that you can buy something which then in turn helps out someone else less fortunate. Plus you are getting a great product that is 100% natural and much better for your body.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:16 am
When we support programs like the one described above, it sends a message that we are aware of what we are consuming. We are aware of where it comes from, who makes it, and who benefits from the sale. In a world so disconnected from its source, this effort is refreshing and desperately needed.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:16 am
We use the Everyday Shea lotion and love it – i still cant believe how inexpensive it is for such a fine lotion! The whole family likes it – and it is the only thing that works for my pre-schoolers very dry skin! I have also tried the Alaffia face cream, which i love but would really like them to change bottles – there is so much waste from the glass pump bottle – about 1/2 inch of lotion that i cant get out no matter how hard i try..
February 18th, 2010 at 8:17 am
By purchasing Whole Trade products you not only nourish your body but the world around you.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Thank you for sharing this information and raising my awareness of this community. What a great way to support a group financially with a product with great ingredients too!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:18 am
I like Whole Foods because everything in the store is good for you. I don’t have to worry that something will be harmful for my health. I also like the fact the store is “Eco-Friendly”.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:19 am
Thank you for writing this article, it is heart-warming. It is
good to understand that these purchases help these individual women and their families. Good job Whole Foods!
Go girl power! Sincerely, Joy
February 18th, 2010 at 8:19 am
Buying whole trade products allows me to contribute positively to the world at large without leaving home. It’s easy and inexpensive, yet so impactful!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:20 am
I used to live in West Africa and definatley belive in your mission. I started a business that entails selling african merchandise that I purchase in W. Africa and also I organize tours to W. Africa. I would love to work with you and maybe exchange ideas to come up with more ways to help promote fair trade in West Africa.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:20 am
Thank you for providing inspiration to help grow the seed of an idea my husband had while visiting Uganda. As he met craftsperson after craftsperson, many of them bright and extremely talented women, he thought we might, in the future, make it possible for some of their art to be distributed here in our area of the US. It’s still just a pipe dream, but the more we admire the quality of the art and the many varied benefits of fair trade, the more inspired we become. We’ve also been looking for a new line of body care products – all natural, of course! Thank you for sharing your products and your story!

Every person can help make the world a better place by making a conscious decision to support Whole Trade when making purchases.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:22 am
I have only a tiny budget for personal “goodies” like lotions etc. If I don’t make them myself then I want those few dollars that I spend to do lots of work, my dollars must purchase good products for me, AND they must be helpful to the creators of that product. That is one of the main reasons to buy Fair Trade, Whole Trade goods. I would rather support real hardworking folks than a huge conglomerate where only the top people profit. By supporting my fellow crafters we all win!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:23 am
Great article! Shows that even small things make a big difference!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:24 am
I think that the more we can turn our attention towards buying products considered to be “Whole Trade” the more we are supporting each other and the planet.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:24 am
When we empower women we empower the entire community, village and family! Give a woman a chance to succeed, and all others around her will succeed…she will make sure of it. Thank you for supporting the empowerment of women with your program!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:26 am
I love Whole Foods products because it benefits people, which improves the community, which helps our world.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:27 am
EVERYTHING!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:27 am
I buy from Whole Foods because I trust Whole Foods.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:27 am
What i like about Whole Trade, and Fair Trade as well, is the recognition that “profit at all cost” is not acceptable. In my opinion all products should factor in the human cost and benefit and whole trade and Fair Trade do that. They recognize that people deserve to receive a reasonable price for their goods, even if you “the buyer” have the ability to treat them unfairly because of your leverage over them. Now if these same ethics could be applied to all goods, we would live in a much better world.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:27 am
I prefer purchasing Whole Trade products because I know my money is making a difference. I know that even the few dollars spent on a product make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. By making sure I know where my food and products come from, I feel like I am part of a global movement to get more Whole Trade prodcuts on the shelf and make the days of mass production something of the past.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:28 am
I believe the best of all is being certain that you are somehow helping, not even mentioning that the quality is always outstanding!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:29 am
The best part of buying at Whole Foods is knowing that my money is going to those who worked for it rather than suits who manage it.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:29 am
What a wonderful product that we as priveledged Americans can use to support our less fortunate neighbors in Africa!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:30 am
I love whole trade because I believe we vote and make a difference in the world with our dollars. This is one way to make a positive difference in the life of another person.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:31 am
this gift basket is perfect to heal my winter dry skin…oh i DO hope i win!! thanks
February 18th, 2010 at 8:31 am
I am a new user to the Everyday Shea body wash. I love the way my skin feels and smells after using it, but I especially feel wonderful knowing I am helping others less fortunate.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:33 am
I cringe to think about the abuse that goes on in some of the third world countries that produce so many products we use daily in the US. Thank you for supporting whole trade!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:33 am
Many consumers are too busy to find out where the items they buy come from and what ingredients are in them. I think it’s wonderful to know that you are truly benefiting others by purchasing these shea products. That has to make a person feel good about the products they are buying and using. Thank you to Whole Foods for all the wonderful products they sell and for making it easier on us to find these products and to help others.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:34 am
It is a blessing to know that we are helping our brothers and sisters so far away.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:37 am
What a wonderful thing to know. I love to hear the stories behind products such as these. It makes me truly happy to know that these women are working together to try and make their lives better.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:37 am
I am excited about purchasing Whole Trade Products, knowing it is providing employment for a community with very little opportunity for income. This had got to give them a tremendous sense of peace, knowing they can provide for their families and survive, while providing us with a quality product!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:37 am
It is refreshing to have options other than commercial products that not only benefit you and your family but also benefits those involved in the making of these special products.
Whole Foods has openend up a new world to me with their foods and products and it is gratifying to shop in their stores and look at the varied mix of many products and food.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:38 am
Whole Foods. Whole Committment. Whole Experience.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:39 am
I prefer to “vote” w/ my dollars by purchasing from socially responsible companies & Alaffia tops the list.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:39 am
What a wonderful co-op! The reson I like Whole Trade products is because I’m always happy to learn about communities that are benefiting from fair-trade opportunities and the products that they make. I’m very happy to support such companies as well by purchasing products that are better for me and better the lives of all they touch. Thank you Whole Foods for carrying products that make a difference in the lives of so many!!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:39 am

February 18th, 2010 at 8:40 am
I like that I am empowering other women through my purchases. I am providing them a means to continue to live as strong, independent, family-supporting providers through my interest in their goods. I may not be able to physically rescue these women from their environments, but I can give them the power to change their situation through my support for their means of earing a living. I love that!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:40 am
When purchasing Whole Trade products I can rest assured that my money is not going to support sweat shops or child labor.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:41 am
It’s great to know that the products that I purchase supports to the community to ensure that workers don’t get underpaid and the quality is excellent. The reasons I liked to shop in Whole Foods: their products are natural and certified organic, there is a variety of products which I can compare based on the ingredients, I enjoy investing in my health by using quality of products, and I just learned that everyone who shops here would be supporting workers from different countries and improve the environment.
I like to share with firends and people around me about Whole Foods becuase it’s beneficial to take care of yourself so people can improve their lifestyle and I usually talk about my research paper of conventional personal care products vs. natural products. After sharing my research with people they are shock to know what kind of ingredients they are using on a daily basis, therefore, they get excited to go the Whole Foods to purchase natural products. I have taken 3 friends already to this store and they liked it. After reading the Whole Trade, I will purchase products more frequently in Whole Food, I can’t wait to go back and make my first purchase on chocolate from Ecuador, which my heritage. Thanks, for letting me know how important it’s to shop in Whole Foods. I am proud to know that we are supporting farmers and workers from 50 countries.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:41 am

I love knowing that a larger percentage of my money is going to the people who need it and deserve it the most!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:44 am
I work for a small potato farm and I love that the Whole Trade Guarantee not only provides quality nutritional products but also supports the “little guy”!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:44 am
I am a huge fan and supporter of Whole Trade. I gladly travel out of the way to purchase these products. I know that the money I spend not only helps these West African women, their families, and their communities, but also helps to keep their wild crafting alive.
It is such a great tragedy when generations worth of crafting knowledge is lost and forgotten (as much has been lost in our own country), knowledge that does “so” much to help people from all walks of life and can never be relearned.
It warms my heart to know that maybe the one bottle of Shea Lotion that I buy or the body butter I pick up for my daughter in law, just may help a family tradition to survive and be passed down to the next generation. Plus, knowing that my purchases will help provide a “fair” price to these wonderful people, keeps me coming back, time and time again for these fantastic products.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:44 am
This is the way to make are world smaller and teach children what and how to pick out produces to buy.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:45 am
I think this is a great value to these people. Thanks for being a global thinker.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:46 am
using good products that help other people make you feel pretty! try it! and they smell good!
)
February 18th, 2010 at 8:46 am
This is a great campaign that connects buyers & sellers while insuring that sellers are getting a fair pay & buyers are getting a great quality natural product. Great job !!!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:47 am
What a treat! When I first saw the Everyday Shea as a sample in whole foods, I almost didn’t try it! But I am so thankful I did.I prefer the vanilla, with just enough of a fragrance and provides a lotion that is just right. I am especially pleased to see the involvement with maternal health care, as that has been my heart’s concern, knowing how little is offered so many in the world for any form of pre or post natal care! I am pleased to be able to use these products!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Wonderful to know that on an individual purchase you can make a difference in someone else’s life!
February 18th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Wonderful info! I have been a Shea fan for a while.
February 18th, 2010 at 8:48 am
If the least we can do is buy whole trade to help the world then do it now!

Not only do Whole Trade products provide individuals with the funds to provide for their families and live a more comfortable life, but they empower those involved to continue to take active steps in their lives, providing them with resources that they simply did not have access to before. Their talents can now shine and they can see the rewards of their hard work.

Great product without all the chemicals, that is actually produces results. I love that it helps those in other countries that are less fortunate without taking advantage.

When I purchase Whole Trade products I am excited that I am able to reach out to someone I may never meet in this lifetime by helping to create a better life for them. Whether that be opportunity for work or better working conditions or more finances, it is exciting to reach out in love to another human being!

What I like best about shopping with whole trade products is that its natural. The products might be expensive, depending on what you buy, but its worth the money in my pocket to help those who need it more than I do. I love taking my children in and they can actually enjoy the products as well. Right now I am using a particular product for my hair because nothing else works. But the natural product I use at the Whole Foods store has saved my skin. I am grateful for those that are sharing their products with us. That is why my money is worth putting it towards these products. They aren’t expensive to me when they are well worth every penny. And I won’t stop shopping for their products they sell. I hope that I can help in every way possible. Especially to these ladies with Alaffia.

Fair trade is wonderful because I know that the product I buy is helping the life of someone without a lot of resources rather than the bottom line of a big corporation.
