UPDATE 02/18/10: The comment period has been extended until March 3, 2010 You still have time to have your voice and opinions heard! The easiest way to send your comments to the USDA is on the True Food Project’s Take Action website.
—————————————————-
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is currently considering whether or not to approve the use of genetically engineered (GE) Roundup-Ready alfalfa. Their report says you don’t care about GMOs in organics. Comments are due to them by February 16th, so read on to hear how you can help. (Or go directly to the True Food Project’s Take Action website.)

As part of the approval process, they are required to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), a detailed analysis of how the crop will affect the environment, organic and conventional farmers, farm animals, and the public. They’ve released their EIS on GE alfalfa, and here’s how the True Food Network at The Center for Food Safety summarized the issue in a recent Action Alert:
In 2006, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) sued the Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its illegal approval of Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready alfalfa. The federal courts sided with CFS and banned GE alfalfa until the USDA fully analyzed the impacts of the plant on the environment, farmers, and the public in a rigorous analysis known as an environmental impact statement (or EIS). USDA released its draft EIS on December 14, 2009. A 60-day comment period is now open until February 16, 2010. This is the first time the USDA has done this type of analysis for any GE crop. Therefore, the final decision will have broad implications for all GE crops.
That Environmental Impact Statement, unfortunately, contains a number of questionable statements and conclusions. The part of the EIS that worries us the most is the claim that buyers of organic foods don’t care if those products are contaminated with GMOs (genetically modified, or genetically engineered, organisms). We know that nothing could be further from the truth, and that a huge number of our shoppers care deeply about avoiding GMOs in the foods they buy. We’ve gone to great lengths to keep GMOs out of organic foods and, through our work with The Non-GMO Project, have helped advance North America’s first standards and verification program for Non-GMO foods. We are intent on preserving our ability to provide non-GMO options for our shoppers. Every newly-approved GMO crop erodes our ability to provide non-GMO food, and leads to contamination of organic and non-GMO crops, due to pollen drift and other forms of contamination.
What can YOU do?
The True Food Project has set up a Take Action website to help you easily submit your comments to the USDA. These are due by February 16th so take the time to do it now. Please use the CFS’s form letter as a guide and personalize it as you see fit – let the USDA know exactly why you’re concerned about this issue, what you think about GMOs in your food, and what you think they should do with the approval of GE alfalfa.
In our own comments to the USDA, we emphasized a few key facts:
- Organic and natural foods consumers do care about the presence of GMOs in their food. In fact, avoiding genetically engineered ingredients is one of the key reasons that shoppers seek out organic foods.
- The contamination of organic and non-GE crops by GE material has presented a huge burden for our company and our industry.
- The unchecked proliferation of GE crops will directly harm organic producers and the integrity of the organic label.
- The approval of GE alfalfa would do more harm than previously approved GE crops, since alfalfa is a perennial crop.
Everyone has their own opinion about GMOs; please tell your story to the USDA via the True Food Project action campaign by February 16th. We’d love to read what you think in the comment section below, but make sure you send your comments to the USDA first!

We do not yet know if a child with a milk allergy, the most common food allergy in the US (according to CNN and the Wall Street Journal) is allergic to rBGH, the first genetically engineered food protein, because no human tests were ever developed or run. Nor do we know if a child with soy allergy is allergic to Round Up Ready soy, introduced in the 1990s to withstand the spraying of weedkillers, because, again, no tests were ever developed or run.
Rather than engage the 1 in 3 American children with allergies, asthma, autism or ADHD in yet another live human trial and risk the introductio of “alfalfa allergy”, perhaps we should enlist the precautionary principal, as other developed countries have done, and wait until these products have been proven safe – rather than continue to proceed because they have not yet been proven dangerous. Our children deserve nothing less.

Thank you for letting us know about this.. very worrisome indeed.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Ok where to start….how can these even be a option are u kidding me really.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
1) I don’t want anything GM foods in/around organic foods.
2) If you’re not informed about GM foods watch, ‘The World According to Monsanto’ for free online (search the documentary on google). Or you can also search ‘Genetically Modified’ on Mercola.com – or there’s plenty of other articles, books, etc. out there.
3) Take the extra 2 seconds to send in a letter… don’t just think that everyone else is going to do it, and that your one doesn’t matter!
February 8th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
This is a very important issue. Thank you for being proactive about this & letting us know before the damage is done. I will be sharing this story with everyone I can.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Thank you for sharing this scary issue with us. That’s ridiculous that they’re thinking of allowing it. And to say that people who buy organic don’t care! Did they even consult anybody who buys organic? I highly doubt it. I don’t pay 25% more for organic food just to be giving money to Monsanto.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
HELL NO!!! they need to stop trying to change everything!! To say people don’t care is an insult. Personally i dont buy organic food but still it is wrong what they are trying to do. First it start’s off as organic then it will be real food then what else? i’m going to help stop this…
Thanks for letting “us” people know cause it seem’s no one else cars…
February 8th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Thank you for this news! After I watched a Dvd called “Unnatural Selection” I realized how important it really is to protect our rights to eat organic, non-Gmo foods. It is very important to also protect our crops from cross-contamination from any new sources. The right to farm organic crops should be of great concern-it seems to be a breach of basic human rights! If we keep missing with our land and nature, there may be no going back!
February 8th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Thank you for the information. This is truly a concern. I buy organic because I want naturally grown food, not scientifically grown food.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
SERIOUSLY?! just the name, “round-up ready” is terrifying! on my way to the Take Action website now!
February 8th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Thank you for the alert. I just submitted a litter through the True Food Project site. Please keep us up-to-date on this matter.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:30 pm
GMO’s are not all bad. Whole Foods you disappoint me. You all need to take some general Molecular Genetic classes.
February 8th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
Thank you for this information. Going to leave my comments now for the USDA.
February 8th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Can you not leave the best thing we have going alone!!!!!!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
I think it’s about time that the government finally got involved with the approval of GMO’s. It is a long time coming. I think it’s ridiculous to think that people don’t care about what they are eating. I will definetly be looking into what I can do to make sure that GMO’s are either banned or strictly regulated.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
The reason I eat organic is that I want my food to be as ” close to Nature ” as possible. GMO are quite far from that. No Thank You!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
Fear of genetically modified organisms is an expression of ignorance that represents a step backwards for society. There’s nothing inherently dangerous about GMOs, and while proper testing is needed prior to the planting of a crop (as is being done right now by the USDA), the only dangers GMOs pose are in the expression of particular proteins knocked into the new crops and implications that could occur if such crops interbreed with local species. If the proteins are known to be non-allergenic and there’s no problem with crossing the crop, by all means do it. Fewer pesticides, higher yields, better returns for farmers and lower prices for the consumer are all potential windfalls.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
There are enough indications that GE foods can be harmful, that I choose NOT to eat them. It is extremely important to me to know that when I choose organic foods, they are not contaminated by GE crops. There’s just TOO much that we don’t know about the long term affects of GE food. I believe that in the fullness of time, future generations will look back on GE foods,if we don’t curb and control them, and think that we must have been completely out of our minds.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
I suspect that whatever people think Monsanto will get their way… tragic.
GMO is IMO one of the greatest threats to humanity.

What bothers me the most is that once crops are contaminated, there’s no going back. You can’t un-do what has been done. With Monsanto, it’s all about the mighty dollar and building a monopoly. It sickens me. I wish more Americans were aware.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
TOTALLY AGAINST GMO’s in ORGANICS!
I recently watched Food, Inc. and have decided to eat only organic, cage-free poultry products and open-range (grass-fed)beef as well as open-rang pork. I am not a flaming liberal or fanatic PETA member but am appalled at the treatment of our animals and the unhealthy hormones and antibiotics they are fed that get transmitted to our food suppliers/distributors and eventually to us. Once I decided to eat only organic, I’m frustrated at how difficult it is to fnd and how expensive it is (3-1/2) times non-organic products.
I was appalled that Monsanto has a monopoly and can intimidate our farmers who want to grow Non-GMO organics. I thought the anti-trust laws prohibited monopolies.

I CARE! Stop the Monsanto Devils from destroying our food supply and killing us all. Don’t fear a nuclear war, fear Monsanto’s GMOS and all GMOs in our food supply. No to GMOs!
February 10th, 2010 at 9:38 am
I am very concerned about GMO’s. With all of the illness in the United States, I think we should be ever so careful about what is done to our food. I always read the ingredient panels and will not buy if it contains GMO’s. We should buy from those companies that state on the product that it contains no GMO’s. Whole Foods is a blessing in my neighborhood.

Why can’t Monsanto leave Mother Nature alone. It’s all in the name of Big Business (or should we all say Big Busyness.) The report issued recently in Jan. of this year,in the International Journal of Biological Sciences, clearly spells out problems with GMO corn. This information was recently on the Whole Foods webpage and I am thankful to them for keeping us informed.

My parents grew up organic in the old country and I had allergies growing up. Guess who was healthier. There is a gaping hole and I hope that someone follows the money and catches up to it, that way we can effect some real change. Right now our food supply is being controlled by financial interests, both private and public. It goes without saying that this is a recipe for disaster. ACT NOW!
February 10th, 2010 at 11:15 am
I have just recovering from breast cancer. I am not blaming anyone but genetics, but now it is my and my doctors problems to make sure it does not come back. One thing big thing is nutrition — and without organic and natural food for me to eat, I will have more trouble going forward. Please consider this.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Please make the link for comments to the USDA more obvious.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Of Course it is unrealistic to think that we all could eat organic food all the time given the extent that the huge agribusiness has on our country. But, for health reasons and for the planet, I myself am going to eat and buy organic.
We just had two little girls in the Salt Lake area die from rat poisoning that was applied around their home to kill gophers. Who knows what other childhood diseases are brought on or exacerbated by chemicals and pesticides in the environment.
I am for handing our children and grandchildren a planet that is better, not worse, for our having been here.
I don’t want GMO’s–or any other chemical that has to have initials to tell what it is–in my food or pouring into the ocean
February 10th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
Organic and natural foods should be just that- natural. No engineering involved in creating changes.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
of course we do not want gmo’s in our organic foods!
February 10th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
I have absolutely no moral problem with GMO food. If we can use it end hunger and increase nutrition and crop yield that’s great. But, we simply haven’t been testing these foods well enough for safety. In fact, the work of Arpad Pusztai shows how dangerous GMO food really is. No way will I ever buy GMO food or put it in my mouth until true safety testing is performed

Thank you for keeping me informed. Nothing is more important than keeping our food and environment safe for our next generations as well as our own health. Also, my sincere appreciation to Whole Foods for supporting the National Institute of Whole Health, for I am studying with them, and between the two of you, I am learning more than I ever expected. Keep up the good work!

How come cigarette’s need to put a warning sign on the cigarette’s, but all these foods with horrible side effects in the ingredients doesn’t require a warning? It is scientifically proven, a lot of these ingredients used in foods/drinks lead to severe health defects. Organic & natural foods are the way to go, please USDA, don’t start contaminating these foods. People will have to start growing and producing there own food.
February 10th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
I started working with Whole Foods in 2002, the same year the USDA rolled out the national organic program. I’ll never forget learning of the countless organic farmers who have lost their Organic Certification because their crops were contaminated by pollen from a neighboring GMO farm. GMOs have not been fully studied long enough to evaluate their food safety or risk, and many people shop organic because GMO’s are expressly forbidden. We have a right to choose what we put into our bodies, and I hope you will hear this organic shopper’s loud voice insisting that this right remains protected. I do not want GMOs in my food!
February 10th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
I don’t want GMO’s in organic food!
February 11th, 2010 at 8:10 am
I do care about what goes into my foods and I only buy organic and natural products. I worry about my overall health and the health of my three children. Therefore, I will not purchase any foods with GMOs in them. Even if I have to pay a little extra, in the long run it is worth it for my family. I don’t think that any GMOs should be in any foods let alone organic.
February 11th, 2010 at 10:34 am
I absolutely care! Stop messing with our food! Just let it grow naturally the way it’s suppose to. It was created perfect, it doesn’t need to be tampered with to improve it. Stop messing with our health!!
I care! It’s not organic if it’s man made. It’s getting harder and harder to teach my children the difference between whole, natural food and man made/altered food!
February 11th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Not only am I concerned about the health of my family, but also about the ability of a company to genetically modify foods that I potentially feed my family, and have no choice in the matter. I feed my family organic foods and believe I, and millions of others like me, do NOT want GE crops and foods to contaminate our organic food supply. Not only do I think that there should NOT be GE Alfalfa, but I believe that all GE/GMO foods should be labeled as such. We live in a country of “free choice” and I choose organic foods that have not been contaminated with GE crops. Please, send your letter today!!
February 11th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
GMO stay out of organic foods. That’s what organic foods are all about!
USDA ought to understand that many people desires their foods to be naturally enchanced, not with artifical means.

Because it has become increasingly harder to find products that are non-GMO I’ve begun doing my own gardening and canning with ALL non-GMO seed. It is of great concern that they would even consider allowing GMOs to be sold as “organic”. They are mutating our food and as of yet do not understand the effects on our health. Please allow us the option of buying a product that is as pure and un-manipulated as possible. GMO has NO place in an organic market!
February 11th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
I buy organic foods because I want to consume the best and most natural foods there are. I like the idea of eating things that could have come from my grandma’s backyard. GMO’s are not my idea of Organic and Natural. Humans are made to consume foods from the earth the way it was put here for us. I believe the USDA would be doing the people of the United States a huge disservice if they allowed GMO’s to be in organics. It would confuse people. Organic is Organic for a reason. This is just one more reason we cannot trust the USDA to do what’s best for the people of the US. It’s all about the money baby! SAY NO TO GMO”S!
February 11th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
This is a terrible tragedy. We must do whatever we can to stop the spread of this Fraken Food. Their attempting to force these foods on us not caring about the adverse reactions on our bodies or the enviornment. Farmersare being forced to grow these Genetically Modified Foods and being pushed out of business by Monster Corporations. We owe it to ourselves, our familes, the enviornment, and small farmers to stand against the war being claimed on our food.
February 11th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Organic and natural foods consumers do care about the presence of GMOs in their food. In fact, avoiding genetically engineered ingredients is one of the key reasons that shoppers seek out organic foods.
The contamination of organic and non-GE crops by GE material has presented a huge burden for our company and our industry.
The unchecked proliferation of GE crops will directly harm organic producers and the integrity of the organic label.
The approval of GE alfalfa would do more harm than previously approved GE crops, since alfalfa is a wind-pollinated perennial crop.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:36 pm
Please keep our food source pure. Please be aware of the link between what we eat and our health and the long term impact on everything and everyone. All suffering is related. We are connected to the earth as child is to a mother.

I do not want genetically alteree ANYTHING! Why do you think Americans have so many health issues? Enough already. Let us eat whole organic non altered foods. Stay out of my food!!!

I love your stores and the committment you and all your staff have to quality food and health.
I have only one problem – Canola oil. I react badly to this oil and the research I have done says that it is in fact a GM modified version of rapesedd oll (toxic) heated to high temperature to remove the odor.
It seems out of character with all you stand for.
I notice that this oil is not offered in the UK or EU.

February 12th, 2010 at 11:23 am
I do not want GMOs allowed to be incorporated into foods labeled Organic.
Research available states that there may be links between long term ingestion of GMO foods and chronic diseases plus the corporations that control GMOs have demonstrated that they will control world food production through genetic engineering. This is detrimental to the whole planet’s ecosystems and to all fauna living in them including human beings.

February 12th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
We do not want GMOs in our organic products ! Please don’t do that to us and the future generations. Thank you, vg
February 12th, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Do you not understand what ORGANIC means? The purpose of people purchasing organic produce/food is for them to eliminate and avoid unnecessary junk – hormones, additives, gmos, etc – in their food. Why would you even consider altering Organic? It makes no sense and it should be banned – if we have something to say, we should have the RIGHT to say LEAVE OUR NATURAL FOOD ALONE!!!!
February 12th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
I do care. Keep your GMO’s out of my organics
February 13th, 2010 at 6:23 am

My grandson (7 yrs old) has Autism. Since the removal of GMOs from his diet, he is almost normal. I urge you to PLEASE do not approve adding anymore of these horrible products to the US consumer market.
February 13th, 2010 at 10:08 am
Please please please do not permit GMO’s in organic foods. GMO’s in organic foods defeats the purpose of what organic foods are supposed to be about. Please think about the interests of the American people over those of Monsanto.

I am one who is aginst GMOs in food. There is no logical need for it in organics and non-organics. This is a political issue. It is about controling the food, becaouse if you control the food…you rule the world. We have lived off of non-GMO food from the beginning of time. We do not need it now. Plus, there are people who are allergic to it. I feel like we are part of one big science experiment. What if, all food was filled with GMOs? Survival of the fitest I guess. Gotta wonder what our governments intentions are. I keep hearing how over populated the earth is. It’s not true! In actuality, the less people there are, the less to control. Yes. I am convinced there are people in power that intend to minimize the population. Look at China! They have their way of doing this. It’s just not as cunning. There is plenty of room on this planet for everyone who exists to live peaceably. The problem is that most people want to live in very desireable places. Places in which everything we need and want is easily accessable. Who wants to live in the mountains 100s of miles from civilization. Not many people, including myself. We love accessability and there will always be pople who try to take advantage of this. I am thankful to Whole Foods Market for their efforts in preserving non-GMO natural and organic food, and making them available to us, the public. I pray that there will never be a time when original food becomes extinct. Thanks for reading my comment. FYI: watch “The Future of Food” on http://www.hulu.com under movies.

Some much more notice than just eight days would have sure been nice so info could have been gathered and more than just a quick note prepared to try and stop this horrid action. I’ll of course send what I can. I believe that much of the worlds present sickness is due to Monsanto and the other GMO manufacturers and most definitely the GMO crops that the U.S. is selling to our farmers and to the rest of the world is responsible for the collapse of the world’s bee colonies and for the death of millions and millions of butterflies and beneficial insects. Next thing we can expect from Monsanto and the U.S. government will be the announcement that they have joined together to form a corporation to manufacture a wonder food and they’ll call their corp. SOYLENT GREEN. Let those who have ears to hear, let them hear!
February 14th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
People don’t want to eat food that is “round-up ready”! I think people buy organic for all sorts of reasons but I assure you one of them is not so they eat round-up–in one way or another. The fact that companies, especially Monsanto, are creating such products is scary–think about it, plants that can withstand the weed killer Round Up. There is something very wrong with that idea. Then those plants cross pollinate with traditional non-GM plants and ta-da we have more genetically modified plants. No wonder so many people have chronic diseases and allergies-especially allergies, the human body knows these foods aren’t truly from nature and creates a defense–the allergy.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
We do not want gmo’s in our organic foods! This is going to be a huge topic & people will be outraged.
February 14th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Organic is the only label we can currently depend on to know that the produce has not been genetically modified. If you take that away from the aware and concerned grocery consumer be prepared for everyone who has been complaisant and silent to start to stand up and fight.
The fact that using GMOs in Organics is even being considered let’s every American know who is truly running the food industry and it isn’t the USDA. I say NO to GMOs in Organics and if I am not heard now I will only become more persistent and speak louder until mu voice is heard.
February 15th, 2010 at 3:03 am
This has to stop! We are polluting the few natural crops we have left! What happens when years from now we realize how incredibly bad these GMOs are for our bodies, but it’s too late to grow the natural products because the GMOs have taken over every crop. What do we tell our children and grandchildren when they do not even have the option to eat the real thing any more? It seems to me the government is making the choice for us about what to eat. We must take control back and decide for ourself what goes into our bodies. Please stop the proliferation of GMOs.
February 15th, 2010 at 7:51 am
I think it’s utterly disgusting to genetically modify our FOOD. It’s revolting to cover our food with poisons. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT!!! The people want healthy NATURAL food that sustain life, Not slowly kill us!

In order to have a better future for this population, we need to take care of what we put in our bodies TODAY. Organic is the way to go to achieve that, but then how come is 3 times more expensive than toxic food? Please help us. Thank you.
February 15th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
Definitely NO to GMO’s in All Organic Foods and all other foods, as well.
I think All Organic Products need to have stricter guidelines about what Organic really is. There are too may larger companies now claiming to have Organic products, but are really not all organic. I recently learned that Coleman’s Meats was actually purchased two years ago by Meyer’s Pharmaceuticals. I will not buy any of their products ever again. I do not trust that their products would still be organic and not filled with GMO’s! It is very creepy that a company that makes pharmaceuticals purchased an “Organic Meats” company. Very suspicious, indeed!
It does make sense why so many illnesses do not react to antibiotics, and people get sicker. Due to all the antibiotics, hormones, pesticides put into meat and produce, and the environment. people are getting ill through all this contamination.
My family and pets eat all organic, and we are healthier than many other people we see around us. Anyone who eats organic knows this too! We also use all natural healing methods, when needed. This is safer and boosts the immune system so it can do what it is meant to do.
I will not purchase anything with GMO’S!

To USDA:
As a consumer of organic fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, bread, etc. for the health of my family and of guests at my table, I would be outraged if USDA does not take immediate and 100% effective steps to prevent the contamination of organic products by genetically engineered alfalfa and other GE materials.
USDA would be grossly irresponsible and potentially criminally liable if it were to allow GE alfalfa.
One immediate and costly effect of allowing GE alfalfa would be to put at risk the fastest growing segment of U.S. agriculture today: organic agriculture. GE alfalfa would devastate not only domestic sales of organic products but would very likely make it impossible to export U.S. grown organic products.
In addition to this immediate threat to both domestic and export sales of organic products, allowing GE alfalfa would create a long-term health risk to the entire U.S. population. At a time of great public concern over U.S. healthcare costs, it makes no sense to allow GE alfalfa, with the risk that in future years the country’s healthcare costs could balloon by billions to deal with the consequences of allowing GE alfalfa.
Individually, I will buy imported organic products if the U.S. organic industry is destroyed as a result of USDA allowing GE alfalfa. I have no doubt that millions of other consumers will do the same, with the result that the U.S. organic industry will be driven out of business at a huge cost to the U.S. economy.
I beg you to consider not only consumers like myself but consider the thousands of family farmers whose businesses would be destroyed. Finally, please consider the health and well-being of your own children and grandchildren. Do not take an irreversible step by permitting GE alfalfa!
Sincerely yours, Jon H. Harsch

February 15th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
Please NO GMOs in our organics. We want safe food please!

This is disgusting, the USDA is corrupted and needs to be fixed. If every one of your corporate spies working for the USDA, EPA, and FDA left, we wouldn’t have to worry about GMOs being in our food. Our food is one of the most important things in our families’ lives, along with water and air. These food companies are just as bad as tobacco companies; we’re ingesting food with genetically modified ingredients, how is this natural? I’d rather eat dirt than eat food with GMO’s in it. We need change, we need to know what’s in our food. This is insulting, the USDA is pathetic. Do something about this now.

Dear USDA,
The fact that you have become unethical by now is undeniable. Putting G.M.O. foods in food labled as organically grown is wrong and dishonest. From the little studies that have been done on GMO, they prove it to be dangerous. A report done on Coast to Coast radio said “You have naturally occuring bacteria inside of your gut, but when you consume G.M.O food it changes your natural bacteria to G.M.O.” They continue by saying “When Monsanto sent packages of G.M.O food to Indian peasants, they fed the product to their cattle and after relatively short term consumption all of the cattle died”. What does this mean if GMOs are consumed by humans? What you are planning to do can potentially harm unaware consumers. One of the reasons I buy organic is to avoid GMOs. If you have respect for others, then you would choose to not take away their freedom of choice to what they put in their body. Shame on you and Monsanto for doing this to consumers! Hopefully you will learn to respect the freedoms of others that continue to whittle away.

Hello, I was upset to learn our government is thinking about GMOs in Organics. I have many illnesses and disease including being a diabetic. I have paid off most of my extra bills like credit cards and have begun eating more organic foods. The organic foods are more expensive up front but in the long run I am looking forward to a healthier life. I know it will not be long that the benefits of eating organics will be seen in my health such as my blood levels and cholestral readings. I say No to GMOs,because I do care about my health, my new grandaughter’s health and my own grown children’s health. Just because I fed them chemical filled foods in their younger years does not mean that we and they cannot feel better, live longer and have a better quality of life with less disease. As a family we say NO to GMOs. It’s never too late.
February 16th, 2010 at 8:22 am
I buy organics to ensure i am eating whole true foods. I have food allergies and buying organics gives me peace of mind.

I care just watch foodinc. dvd what a eye opener.
February 16th, 2010 at 2:17 pm
I sent in a letter, and I hope others will also do so.
What floors me is that somewhere, someone actually thought such a stupid statement sounded plausible.

NO GMOs IN ORGANICS
February 16th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Please leave GMO’s out of our food.
February 17th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
Introduction of GMO’s automatically means it’s NOT organic! You can’t slip one past us USDA!
February 18th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
The whole concept of GMO’s in organics is ridiculous. There is nothing organic or natural about something that is genetically modified. Some of us who try to stick to an organic diet do so because of current or impending health issues. The full safety of genetically altered items may not been known until many years from now. In my opinion, genetic modification of anything should not be allowed. Please, do NOT allow GMO’s in organics!
February 18th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
NO GMO’s in any way!!!
GMO’s is not only ethical and sociological issue that arose recently, it also absolutely will be a health issue, starting with the United States, and Europe. If someone prefers to eat GMO’s, it’s their choice, but I also want to have a choice, choice to know when, how and with that my food was made. I want it to be a must, to include where the product was genetically modified, what was modified.
Also a lot of people say that “we don’t know the exact effect of GMO’s” on the health effect. Being fluent in several eastern European languages, and having close relations with those countries, I can say that scientists and doctors over there are very cautious and alert on this issue. The main precaution: “Avoid it anytime you can”
February 18th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
I want to keep our organic food pure and clean without being contaminated. Our food is the most important thing. Our children’s children will suffer if we don’t do something fast! I say NO TO MONSANTO and GMO’s!
February 18th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
I have actively switched to shopping for foods that specifically state they do *NOT* contain any GMOs!! Most organic foods state that they are free of GMOs. If the USDA allows for GMOs in organic foods, then I will have even fewer options! I am firmly opposed to the presence of GMOs in organics and to GE crops period, including GE alfalfa! This is very important to me and should be important to everyone in American for health, environmental, economic, and political reasons!
February 18th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
GMOs take money away from small American farmers trying to do the right thing. Big business benefits but doesn’t care about the ramifications or who gets hurt in the process.
February 18th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
I do not…I repeat…I do not want GMO’s at my local organic grocer. I want my food to be nature not modified.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:40 pm
Please do the right thing! Do not add GMOS in organic food! Do what’s best for your children, and allow the American people what they deserve: Good, natural, organic food.
Stop messing with our food, and messing with our health!!!!!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Please do not allow GM foods in our food supply.
Some European countries have banned GM foods and their citizens are much healthier.Their food is more filling. The taste, smell and texture is what food should be coming directly from the farmer’s fields.
Our food supply should be in its natural state. Wheat, barley, oats, etc should NOT be GM. A tomato should taste and smell like a tomato. The American food industry is killing babies to the geriatric population with GM food. STOP GM FOODS.
February 19th, 2010 at 5:59 am
There is not enough time to test the long range consequences of genetically modified foods. Man is so prone to think he can create what has taken nature hundreds of thousands of years to perfect. Why is man so inclined? Because there are too many humans on this earth and we are trying to eat everything. How about we take a page out of the animal rule book. Eat some, leave the rest for someone else! We need to change our excessive human ways. Not “design” food and animals to grow at top speed and be slaughtered and wasted by humans.
* Organic and natural foods consumers do care about the presence of GMOs in their food. In fact, avoiding genetically engineered ingredients is one of the key reasons that shoppers seek out organic foods.
* The contamination of organic and non-GE crops by GE material has presented a huge burden for our company and our industry.
* The unchecked proliferation of GE crops will directly harm organic producers and the integrity of the organic label.
* The approval of GE alfalfa would do more harm than previously approved GE crops, since alfalfa is a perennial crop.

How can one justifiably call something natural if it has been altered. It would be like calling salads at a fast food restaurant a healthy alternative. How much preservatives are used to keep that food looking fresh? Once something has been modified, it is no longer is its natural state. Companies need to stop using the term “All Natural” and “Eco Friendly” as a marketing ploy and start providing products that really are healthy for us.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:24 am
Please stop using pesticides and antibiotics on our foods…it cause cancer obviously…I am constantly worried about what I am putting into mine and my family’s bodies !
February 19th, 2010 at 6:32 pm
Nature is fine without our help. Please don’t robot chicken our food. What goes in comes out. Please don’t make me your guniea pia and I won’t call you Healthwyzer. Thank you.
February 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
Sspeaking on behalf of my customers and myself. Our food chain is already polluted enough. People are becoming more and more weary about the foods they put in their bodies. This should not be allowed in organics.

This has to do with Round-up resistant alfalfa and weed control and profits. If alfalfa can live even after covered in Round-up the the chances are, more Round up will be used and sold by Monsanto. In 2005 it was Roundup resistant Alfalfa was rolled out and planted then stopped by a suit over lack of testing. Monsanto tested it and now wants it approved by the USDA. This is the first time this kind of review has been done and may set the standard for future GE product approval.
According to the summery findings in Monsantos tests, GE alfalfas approval could result in in larger crops yields, profits, etc. and… only one type of frog may be affected by the run off. Additionally there could be some crop contamination to possible neighboring farms organic or not but if it is unintentional then no one is held accountable.
If I am a farmer in Egypt trying to farm, then chemicals may help me out, but for farmers in the richest country in the world with the best soil in the world to feel they need this is absurd. Nevermind the some of the world won’t buy or crops because they are full of goop.
Given the state of our oceans another farming practic that encourages chemical use just irresponsible.
Please email or write to the USDA on this topic. They are taking this to four Alfalfa growers conferences for comment and check out Monsatos blog/site on this. They have circled their wagons as one would expect them to.

WE DO NOT WANT GMOS IN ORGANIC AND WE WANT THEM LABELED IN THE SUPERMARKETS
February 21st, 2010 at 9:29 am
Dear USDA,
I do very much care about contaminate GMO products. That is right they are poison to our bodies! Currently I do not buy any product that is GMO grown and plan to never buy them. I am from ND and of farm back round. I am deeply concerned about the growing number of GMO crops. STOP gmo’s STOP allowing Monsanto twist what the real consumer wants, Listen Listen to us.

Maintaining the pure state of organics is important to our agriculture and the way we eat. Food doesn’t need to be manipulated. It would be just as easy for GMO companies to spend their resources on making things safer and purer.
The blatant favoritism toward Monsanto is grotesque. There needs to be separateness in business and politics. The breeches are so profound; they’re irrepairable. Monsanto, the FDA and the USDA are all intertwined in a sinuous rats nest.
Because these boundaries have been compromised, so has been the safety of the foods we eat. Our foods weren’t meant to be manipulated in this way.
The greed is really sickening.

Allowing bodycare products to include GMOs ingredients would render the product unorganic. Bending the rules to permit GMOs defeats the purpose of purchasing organic bodycare products.

BOOOOOOOO! no GMO in my food!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
When Whole Foods labels a product as “All Natural” does that mean the products do not contain GMO’s?
March 30th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
We do our best to avoid GMOs in all of our 365 Everyday Value products and all certified-organic products cannot contain GMOs.
March 31st, 2010 at 3:06 pm
My wife & I believe the question should not be the seed GMO or not; rather the question should be whether Roundup is safe for the consumer, the land and it use, as well as the water table beneath and downstream from Roundup. Roundup is a really nature unfriendly product and benefits big business and not the consumer.
January 25th, 2011 at 8:12 am
why do you even have tihs site up? Your company wishes to co-exist now, why arent you promoting that?
January 28th, 2011 at 7:33 am
Once these products are labeled and consumers can avoid purchasing them, hopefully we get the last laugh. I rather start growing my own food before I purchase GMO products! And I may just have too!
February 9th, 2011 at 3:12 pm
If we require food labeling for calories and ingredients, why not label our food re: GMOs? I do not want GMOs in our food supply chain nor in my body. At least, dear government, allow me to be informed to make my own choice.
No GMOs in organics, either.
I’m sick of our government not caring about its citizen. The FDA and EPA care more about the Monsanto’s of the world than its own citizens. Obama, wake up!! How dare you allow our First Lady to tout fresh fruits and veggies in the White House “Garden” while allowing the rest of us to consume GMO food without labeling.
February 10th, 2011 at 10:30 pm
Several comments here mentioned that they only buy organic food so they are not concerned about the GMO food. The biggest threat right now is the spread of these GMO seeds and crops to the organic foods. Once this happens there will be no more organic crops.
And a lot of good all the comments did to the USDA, they went and approved this anyway. Did any of you really think that the USDA would ever listen to what any citizen has to say.
March 3rd, 2011 at 11:38 am
I have missed the deadline, but would still like to weigh in. I do not want to ingest GMOs at all. I disapprove of GMO air born matter pollenating and sterilizing neighboring fields. This is one of the most important issues of our time period and any government organization that thinks it’s ok to alter, and then copyright food at the expense of food security and integrity is not serving the people that pay their wages. These agencies are selling-out our future.
April 27th, 2011 at 3:53 pm
It is becoming more and more important and more urgent that GMO’s are stopped. Monsanto is now engineering foods with insecticides so they only work with Monsanto “Roundup” Our food is becoming lethal.
January 30th, 2012 at 8:14 am
label your GMO products….the USDA will not protect the consumers. Begin the process of labeling and you will no longer have to fight against Monsanto because the consumers will do it for you.
