Christian P. is our randomly selected winner of the 5-title Putumayo CD collection. Thanks everyone for your entries!
Putumayo Kids just released what’s destined to be your kid’s new favorite: Jazz Playground. From bebop and swing to Latin and African jazz, this multicultural CD celebrates the vibrant diversity and global influence of jazz and will get the whole family grooving. (Read on for a chance to win some Putumayo CDs.)
I’ve loved their Playground series since my daughter was young and would play a CD over and over and over again. We quickly realized that Putumayo CDs pleased her as well as us! It turns out that Dan Storper, founder of Putumayo, had that exact plan in mind:
With our children’s series, my professional goals and responsibilities as a father of a 4-year-old son seem to merge. I’m always looking for songs that William will love and, despite playing scores of time, won’t drive my wife and me crazy. Jazz Playground is filled with lots of loveable, jazzy songs that are great fun for kids but which parents not only can bear but may even press the replay button for themselves. One of the songs, Cumbamba, by Cuban-American, Jose Conde, was recorded especially for this CD after I’d heard a scratchy, early version that I thought would sound nice if re-recorded. The cross-cultural collaborations and tasteful versions of children’s favorites like Sing a Song of Sixpence, Mary Had a Little Lamb and the Spiderman theme song make this a one of kind musical journey that the whole family can appreciate.

My daughter and I are constantly listening to Michael Jackson’s greastest hits. I was pregnant when he passed away and her father is a dancer who was hired to be in a huge Michael Jackson show. By being at all of his rehearsals she became attached to the music. She is now 10 weeks old and since birth listening to the Michael Jackson’s greatest hits CD or dancing with mommy to it is the only way to stop her from crying.

This musical delight contains all the children’s song numbers taught to Primary classes of all ages, approved by the church. They are simply wonderful tunes, such as “Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam”. Many of these songs have hand and body actions that go along with each verse. Sincerely, Jane Ryan, “Grandma Jane”

My kids are 3 and 1 and there are 2 CD’s we play nonstop, one in the car and one at home.
The first is produced by Music For Little People: Ted Jacobs’ A Child’s Garden of Songs. It features the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson (A Child’s Garden of Verse) set to beautiful Celtic music and we all love it!
The second is “Songs for Saplings” by Dana Dirksen. It teaches children simple Bible verses to remember and Dana’s pure, clear voice and sweet, simple acoustic guitar, along with the precious harmony of the childrens’ voices, is a favorite in our home.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

March 10th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Oh, and, not trying to get an extra entry, but I forgot to add that we love Putumayo music too and I have been using World Playground with kids (I used to teach) for almost 10 years! My son loves it. Our close ties are with Animal Playground (my son begs for “No More Monkeys Jumpin’ on the Bed!”) and Celtic Dreamland…the song on there by Susan McKeown has a very special meaning for me and my daughter, and I even emailed the artist personally for a translation from Gaelic, which she graciously provided. I am so grateful to Putumayo for putting beautiful, world-wide folk music out there that we can all learn from! My kids are so musical and I love that they aren’t limited to the same 5 songs I knew as a kid…you know, “Twinkle Twinkle”, “ABC’s”, “A Tisket, A Tasket”…
March 10th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Would love some Jazz!!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
My daughter insists on listening to only “Fascinating Creatures” by Frances England whenever we are in the car. My daughter is 3 years old and it’s the perfect mood music for her, fun lyrics and lots of recognizable terms. She laughs out loud when she hears “Blueberry Pancakes” because there’s a line that sings about flipping the pancakes in the air with the blue berries in the sky… Love it!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
The Curious George Soundtrack is the favorite in our minivan, for both my kids and myself!

When he falls asleep at night, he listens to NPR, they’re usually playing classical, but sometimes play jazz or bluegrass. My son has taken quite a liking to jazz, which surprised me.

Putumayo African playground will be heard about daily in this house hold!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
Josh Groban helps calm our baby every time he fusses, must be because mom listened to it non-stop during her pregnancy.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
I love Joanie Bartels music, especially her Lullaby Magic album. My mom played it to me as a baby and while I was growing up. I like how it’s so soft and soothing. This music is like comfort food for my soul. Some jazz would be nice to spice things up though.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
Elizabeth Mitchell My Little Bird is one of our favorites, but nothing gets us through the afternoon like a little Michael Franti. We are big Putumayo fans as well (French cafe for tea parties!). Great giveaway.

March 10th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
Several Putamayo compliations are on regular rotation at our house, but particularly Music from the Winelands, Gypsy Caravan and Swing Around the World. All the Cuban CDs are fantastic also!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
We still listen to the Jack Johnson/Curious George CD, as well as Elizabeth Mitchell. They Might Be Giants is a favorite as well as most anything sung by children.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
My three-year-old is a three-year fan of French Playground. The only other CD/artist she listens to with equal conviction is Paul Simon. And, you know what? I’ll take it. I think I enjoy it as much as she does — and I cherish the fact that she prefers it to the usual toddler/pre-K fare she’s so often bombarded with. We’d love to discover and experience more that Putumayo has to offer!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
My kids (12, 10 & 2) love the Beatles 1, AC/DC Back in Black, Michael Jackson’s Greatest Hits, Tom Petty Full Moon Fever and Enya Shepherd Moon. So glad that their tastes are so diverse…I don’t go nuts listening to the same thing over and over.

March 10th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
In our house, we listen to kid and grown up’s music. Most recently, we’ve been listening to a newcomer to the kid’s music scene from Connecticut – Ryan SanAngelo – who is also an author. His book is Spaghetti Eddie which is a very cool story about Eddie who loves spaghetti and uses it to help people! His CDs are even cooler with a very grown up, rock n’ roll feel – Play All Day! and Awesome, Dude!!! http://www.ryansanangleo.com
March 10th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
My son is 5, and he loves ziggy Marley, barenaked ladies, and they might be giants…. All have amazing kids albums!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
We love Sandra Boynton’s “Dog Train” CD. It really rocks – especially the title song, “Don’t Give Me That Broccoli” & “Cow Planet”. Moo, moo, moo…quack, quack!
In addition, we like Beatles – especially “Yellow Submarine” – & the B-52s. Funny story: My son likes to sing when he’s getting his hair cut. Last time, he was singing some kid fare (“Chim-chiminey”, “A You’re Adorable”, etc.) – and then broke out into “Roam” (from the B-52s) and “Brick House”. I’ve done my job!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
My twin 4 year olds LOVE Steve Songs (Mr. Steve from PBS). We listen to all his cds in the car.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
we’ve listened to a lot over the years.. the kids are swayed by what’s popular, but always come back to the beastie boys, zero 7, los lobos and the red hot chili peppers. i try to fit in some classical, johnny cash and world music, too. we have a lot of putumayo cd’s and they have been a great source of world music: latin jazz, afro cuban, celtic dreamland, world reggae, and of course the classic world playground! they are all outstanding.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
It’s been John Lithgow’s The Sunny Side of the Street for weeks now!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
I’m trying to teach my kids to love a variety of music, but jazz is my passion. One we listen to over and over again is The Buena Vista Social Club. The kids really love De Camino a la Vereda. They’re ages 2 and 5. (And they even watched the movie with me recently.)
March 10th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Well, it changes alot, she used to love Hi-5, then Laurie Berkner…now it is soundtracks! The current favorite is Disney’s Beauty and the Beast soundtrack. Over and over, lol! But it is great music! I have heard of the Putamayo cds & would love to win Thanks for the chance.

I listen to the Folk for kids…almost more than I do with my 2 1/2 year old son! We have become huge fans of all the individual artists, especially Dan Zanes. Also, I think it’s Sing Along with Putamayo, is stuck on repeat. Bling Blang is now said to be “Mama’s Jam!”
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
We cannot let one day go by, without listening to, “Putomayo’s World Reggae CD”!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
We have no little ones, but if we did we would listen to the Putumayo Caribbean Playground. Especially “Coconut Woman” Good stuff!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Under a Shady Tree by Laurie Berkner. We are listening to it RIGHT NOW, and we will be (I can guarantee it) for nearly every waking moment of my child’s life until she finds something else. We love the Putamayo kids, my favorite is the French Playground, but they all offer something wonderful.
Also, we LOVE Jack Johnson & friends’ Curious George album- especially after meeting him a few months at LegoLand- what a nice guy!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
We started noticing songs that our son would totally jam out to, so we started the ‘Kaeden’s Faves’ playlist. We throw that on and he’s dancing and singing like crazy (list includes such faves as Vampire Weekend, Beirut, Sting, Cloud Cult, Feist, etc).
March 10th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
My kids listen to anything Disney..they sing along to the soundtracks for Cinderella,Snow White,The Jungle Book and their favorite right now is Toy Story’s “U Got a Friend in Me”….It always simmers them down…

We listen to a lot of music in our house and have a ton of favorites…Jack Johnson, Elizabeth Mitchell, 23 Skidoo, Gustafer Yellowgold…to name a few from our kids music collection. The one my son is just starting to get into right now and really groovin to is They Might Be Giants – Here Come the 1,2,3’s.
My husband and I definitely prefer kids music that we can stand to listen to as well so it gets the whole family moving!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
When my son was younger we started with both World Playground CDs. Now we love the Paris and French Cafe CDs. He also listens to the Asian Dreamland CD almost nightly to fall asleep. They are all so wonderful!! Can’t have enough!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Putumayo’s “Sesame Playground” gets an enormously inordinant amount of airtime, as do Harry Connick Jr.’s “Songs I Heard” and Los Lobs’ “Los Lobos Goes Disney”. We have a few of Putumayo’s Playground discs, and the whole family enjoys them, as we do with the other Putumayo CDs we have. Putumayo never disappoints.
March 10th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
The opportunity to ponder what CD we listen to most felt daunting and brought me to investigate further by looking in the CD cabinet to find, “Putumayo Presents-The Best Of World Music” on top. I bought it in 1994 the year my son was born, we’ve listened and danced to it incessantly to this day, what great memories. Love You Putumayo

There is something so sweet and comforting to hear “Don’t worry bout’ a thing cuz everthing little thing is gonna be alright!” from beautiful 3 and 5 year old voices.

My daughter will be 5 in April. She loves country music and when she was in the womb would bounce and be really happy to hear Born to Boogie by hank jr. She still loves County, but has such a wide variety in music. But Her current fave has to be Asheba’s no more monkey’s…When she hears that song she runs, jumps, and flips through out the house. She is so high energy that after listening to that song a few times she has had a great work out. I just love though when she gets moving to music and has a great time.

When our daughter was a newborn she would fall asleep to various live recording we have of Jack Johnson…something about his soft voice and beautiful acoustic guitar soothed her like nothing else. She’s now 4 and we have a 2 year old son who both love Jack’s Curious George soundtrack. Other favorites are Garcia and Grisman, the Beatles, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seegar and CSN. More recently, they are loving the song “Backwards Down the Number Line” by Phish. And it’s a family tradition to listen to Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” after Thanksgiving dinner. Love watching my kids sing and dance so free and purely to the same music that I love. We’ll have to check out Jazz Playground.
Also, much love to Whole Foods Mount Washington, MD store for supporting WTMD’s (Baltimore’s listener-supported public radio station) fund drive with free lunch for it’s volunteers this week. Rock-on WFM!

I would love to have one of your CDs for my son, who is almost 3. He is a wonderful, musical child. He’s always playing with his guitar and other instruments and loves to dance. We are a multicultural family and would love to have some multicultural music to dance together with. Many nights we break out the music and have family free style dance time. It’s great together time, fun, and we get some exercise too. I think this CD would be perfect for that use. We thought Little Lamb Jam was great fun. Thanks.
