What would you do with a $1,000 Gift Card to Whole Foods Market? Well, you might have the opportunity to find out! We’re collaborating with food52, an online community for home cooks, to sponsor eight weeks of recipe contests and the chance to win big.
Founded by Amanda Hesser, author and former New York Times food editor and editor of T Living, and Merrill Stubbs, freelance food writer and editor, food52 holds weekly recipe contests and uses crowd-sourcing and curation to bring its members recipes, shopping tips, blogs and conversation. Our partnership with food52 spotlights summer’s flavorful ingredients such as basil and heirloom tomatoes while giving home cooks a strong voice in creating, sharing and celebrating the season’s best recipes.
From today to July 26, a different seasonal ingredient will be announced each week here and on food52.com, and home cooks will have one week to submit an original recipe based on the featured ingredient. The following week, food52 will announce two finalists, and the online community will be able to vote on a winner from the two. Each weekly winner will receive a $100 gift card from Whole Foods Market. The eight winners from each week will be entered into a grand-prize contest for a $1,000 Whole Foods Market gift card!
Here’s a sneak peek at the whole 8-week list:
- June 7 Cucumbers
- June 14 Fresh mozzarella
- June 21 Cherries
- June 28 Summer squash
- July 5 Basil
- July 12 Swordfish
- July 19 Ground beef burgers
- July 26 Heirloom tomatoes
So get cooking with your recipe suggestions for cucumber! All recipe submissions must meet Whole Foods Market’s Quality Standards, which means that they must be free of hydrogenated fats, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners.
Curious to see what kind of recipes have been selected by food52 in the past? Here are a couple, perfect for your summer table:
Good luck!

@anzerme Sorry for the challenges! Maybe it will be simpler if you go directly to the food52 contest page here: http://www.food52.com/contests
The ingredient for the recipe contest changes each week, so you’ll see the mozzarella contest this week instead of the cucumber one. Hope this helps!

I vote for the squash 7 cous cous salad. This is a very versatile recipe that can be adapted to almost any grain. Although it can be very sweet, it is easy to moderate the sugar by eliminating or reducing the amount of honey and/or raisins. This should be both healthy and easy to make.

The 8-Week Featured Ingredient Recipe Contest is awesome! I can’t wait to enter it next year! I am a true Whole Foods Market junkie! I should have my paychecks directly deposited to a special WFM account! So a little more on me….NO regrets, just lessons learned, in both life and the kitchen! My love for the ocean is where my soul reconnects with reality. The kitchen is my other sanctuary where I am able to artistically create culinary works of edible art!
My favorite things to cook; Breakfast Meals, Grilling, BBQing, Italian dishes and anything from scratch. Keep it real! Never the cook the same thing twice. Keep ‘em guessing. Make EVERY meal an original meal! I am the undefeated Champion of the Real Men cook competition in the best hot appetizer category for over ten years! My love of cooking was a staple at the firehouse table, we loved to cook! Our firefighters’ association did a lot of cooking based fund raising; breakfasts, dinners and BBQ’s. MORE FROM ABOVE…During my off time/seasons from the FD, I worked in the Hospitality field as a resident Innkeeper and breakfast chef for an upscale 4 diamond Bed & Breakfast for over 10 years.I NEVER enjoyed the “Intuitional Style Chef”. Cooking for friends and family was what I was made for including the occasional fund-raising event. I now cook for a hobby and am putting together The Firehouse Cookbook.

I think the Heirloom Tomato and Lemon Mascarpone Tart should be the winner. the sweetness of the tomatoes in contract to the tartness of the lemon brings out a taste beyond description. They only serve to enhance the taste experience. This is one time where the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.
August 19th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
i vote for the Heirloom tomatoes recipe as it is very original, have a great presentation, full of nutritional benefits, a healthy alternative to pizza and a nice way to satisfy a snack attack.
right on

I liked the Peached Poached w/ Basil because I am a fan of fruit. The White Wine keeps it juicy while the Basil gives it that taste. This is a great recipe.
