One-Day Sale on Ground Grass-fed Beef — 9/2

By Frances Flower, August 29, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Frances Flower
Saddle up – it’s that time again! All of our U.S. stores will help shoppers celebrate Labor Day by offering ground grass-fed beef at a sale price of just $4.99 per pound this Friday, September 2nd, only. It’s a one-day only sale and there is a 10 pounds per person limit. This is the perfect way to try out grass-fed beef if you haven’t yet; and if you have, a perfect opportunity to stock up! So what does it take to be a grass-fed beef supplier for Whole Foods Market? In addition to being rated through Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step™ Animal Welfare Rating program, their beef cattle must also meet these criteria:
  • Cattle must be born and raised on pasture or rangeland;
  • Cattle are fed forage consisting of grass (annual and perennial), forbs (e.g. legumes, Brassica), browse (woody plants like shrubs and bushes), or cereal grain crops in the vegetative (pre-grain) state, with the exception of milk consumed by calves prior to weaning;
  • Cattle are not fed grain or grain by-products;
  • Cattle can be fed hay, haylage, baleage, silage and crop residue without grain during periods of low forage quality or bad weather.
As you can appreciate, it takes a lot of skill and expertise to manage cattle and their environment to bring you grass-fed beef. Most grass-fed ranchers are either independent, selling beef from their own property, or they join small, locally focused producer groups. We've sought out partnerships with a variety of regional and local grass-fed ranchers, including many family farms, with the goal of helping bring grass-fed ranching back into the mainstream because of its positive impact on the cattle, the environment and how it supports local communities. One of these partnerships is with our friends at Panorama Organic Grass-fed Meats – a supplier of local, organic, 100% grass-fed, Step 4 (pasture centered) beef to Whole Foods Market stores in the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, and the Rocky Mountain regions. Back in 2005, Panorama began selling five head of organic grass-fed cattle each week to our Colorado stores and we’ve grown together over the years. And we continue to support new ranches raising grass-fed cattle, like our recent partnership with Hearst Ranch Grass-Fed Beef, another Step 4 (pasture centered) beef producer. Their cattle graze on the San Simeon Ranch, which surrounds the world-famous Hearst Castle along the California coast, and on the 73,000 acre Jack Ranch located sixty miles inland. One of the great things about grass-fed beef is the connection to local and regional ranches. When you visit our stores this Friday, September 2nd, for the one-day sale, you’ll be getting grass-fed beef from these ranches: Baldwin Beef Grass-fed beef from Baldwin Family Farms is available in our North and South Carolina stores. Cold Spring Ranch Grass-fed beef from Cold Spring Ranch is available in our store in Maine. Eel River Organic Beef Organic grass-fed beef from Eel River is available in our Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada stores. Maui Cattle Company Grass-fed beef from Maui Cattle is available in our stores in Hawaii. Great post! We agree it's important to eat foods that are nutrient-rich and not nutrient-deficient. Organic grass fed lean meats are an important part of this category. Feed your body to provide a plentiful supply of raw material from which your body can produce energy. Feel free to read more about this on our site: http://ow.ly/6fKPW! Thanks for sharing.

How much does this normally sell for at Whole Foods?

@Lindsay Since product price varies by store according to a number of variables (distance of travel, resources, etc), the "normal" price for the grass-fed beef featured for this One Day Sale also varies by store and region. That being said, a general price stores would "normally" ask is somewhere around $7.99 for the grass-fed beef. That equates to nearly a 40% discount! With a discount like that you can even get enough for the freezer!

@Inquirer Sorry to say we do not currently have any grass-fed beef suppliers in Florida. Our Florida team gets their product from White Oak Pastures in Georgia. They are an AWESOME operation!

No mention of fat content. What is the ratio of this beef? If it is 85/15 or 90/10, I'll definitely be stocking up!

@Paula Since the beef suppliers are different region to region and store to store, I encourage you to reach out to your community store. This is the best way to get the most accurate information. The link included below will take you to the store search page where you will be able to find your community's store contact information. http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/

I bought Step 4 NY strips at WF in Bellingham, MA. I felt like I had eaten a steak for the first time in my life. The taste was a pure and clean; no veins or gross, fatty parts. Usual when I eat steak, I get bloated and constipated (TMI!). That didn't happen this time. This is the way farming used to be, the way it's supposed to be, and hopefully the way it soon will be again! It costs more not b/c Whole Foods is greedy (like most other companies) but it's so much more expensive to raise animals in humane conditions. I'd rather have less beef less often, but with better and healthier quality for my family and the animal.

What a great sale! I was just wondering what the chances are of my local market selling out before I can get there on Friday. Will Whole Foods do a rain check or is it first come, first serve? Do you think I could pre-order?
08/30/2011 6:26:54 PM CDT
janejohnson says ...
@Raquella Thanks! The One-Day Sales are first-come, first-serve with a possibility of selling out. To make sure you get the most accurate answer about the likelihood of selling out before your arrival, please reach out to your community's store (follow the below link). It's not likely the store will issue "rain checks" or allow for pre-order, but you won't know until you ask. :) Check out our Meat Department Facebook for grass-fed beef recipes, a new one posted every day until the sale! http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/ http://www.facebook.com/WholeFoodsMeat

If it's not certified organic, is it possible that the cattle are eating any GMOs?

I've never tried ground grass-fed beef before, but since it's on sale (for how much it usually cost I guess; which I can't even imagine) I'll have to come in and pick some up. It's interesting how when cows actually eat what they're supposed to and made to eat, rather than corn we wind up paying more; that's not right.

Grass-fed meat is the only meat I would eat. I like it cooked medium-well on a grill or griddle, and it is good.

Why is it that these great sales are often on Fridays only? We do not have a local Whole Foods so we have to travel about an hour to get to one. Our traveling is done on weekends because we work the rest of the week. This is disappointing because some of these offers are really good, and I would like to take advantage of them.
