Okay, leute (that’s “folks” in German), with Oktoberfest just around the corner, I thought it was a good time to talk sausages and Sausage Meisters! For those of you not familiar with the term “Meister,” the direct translation from German is “Master” — as in a master craftsman.
Before we worked here, a few team members (myself included) went through a Sausage Meister apprenticeship program in Europe and we became official Meisters. Skipping forward a few years, we wanted to bring the same skills into the Meat Department at Whole Foods Market so our customers could have sausages made fresh in-house. Over the last few years, we developed a training program similar to the one in Europe for our own Whole Foods Market Sausage Meisters.
Today, each store has several meat team members who are elite Sausage Meisters. As a result of the training program and their own skill and sheer commitment to the craft, they have perfected the method of grinding, seasoning, stuffing, linking and making sausages in-house each day just for you!
Our teams have developed over 40 different custom-made sausages that are made daily in our stores! Besides pork sausages, we have chicken, turkey, lamb and buffalo sausages available too. If you like traditional flavors, try one of these top-selling Authentic Traditional sausages:

Wow! What a variety. Our local market has some great Italian Sausage but very little in the way of variety.
We have no sausage meisters here on Cape Cod and I certainly would love to learn this art.
If Whole Foods is looking to allow non-employees to their class or offer a meister class, let me know!

@JohnL Thanks for your support and interest in the Sausage Meister class offered by Whole Foods. Currently there are no plans to include non-employees in this training program. However, many Whole Foods Markets have a dedicated Culinary Center that’s specific purpose is to offer classes in specialty production of food and meals. I’ve included a link below that will help you identify if your area has a Culinary Center. We encourage you to reach out to them directly. Even if they don’t offer a specific class for sausage, it may be an option to offer on to a group of interested individuals. PROST!

Are any of your sausages lower in sodium than packaged sausages? Can you provide the nutritional information?

Nice to know there are sausage meisters at my store. So with the German training, why only one German sausage? How about weisswurst or currywurst or any others of the many non-Italian European varieties?

@Carmel Since our product offering varies from store to store, the best way to get the most accurate and complete information regarding the low-sodium sausages available in your community’s Whole Foods Market is to contact them directly. A Team Member from your Meat Department will be more than happy to discuss the full nutritional information for each product and help you find the best option for you. The link below will help you identify the contact information for your store. Prost!

@Peter I like your “food for thought” suggestion. Not all of our sausage masters were German trained like Hans and Theo. That being said, if you cannot find a German sausage that suits you in store made sausage section, we do carry Brat Hans brand authentic German sausages packaged in meat departments across the country. Another idea might be to reach out to your meat department and ask them to make some German style sausages just for you! The link below will help you identify the contact information to your community Whole Foods Market. A Team Member from your store will be happy to help you identify the best sausage to satisfy your taste buds, buddsy!

I am excited to find this blog! I will stop by the store and see if the Meisters can recommend or create a sausage without allergens for me. Sadly, all nightshades are banned forever so no peppers except peppercorns, usually sub cumin for paprika in cooking.
