Good Things to Give Without Giving Away the Bank

Does the list of people you need to buy gifts for this holiday season keep growing? Whether it’s a stocking stuffer or token of thanks, sometimes you simply need a high-quality thoughtful gift that still keeps the jingle in your pocket. In the spirit of the holidays, we’re sharing a few of our favorite budget-conscious gift ideas.

Gifts Under $10

These gifts are easy to give and fun to receive:

  • Rich and chocolaty, these addictive treats are made from an old family recipe by one of France’s leading chocolatiers. Share our creamy, dreamy truffles with any and all at a whim. An 8.8-oz box of Whole Foods Market™ Organic Chocolate Truffles is no more than $5.99.

  • Stumped on a Secret Santa gift? Your only challenge will be choosing the right flavor of this incredible “cocoa for adults” for that lucky colleague. A 7.5-oz box of Allegro® Drinking Chocolate—Costa Rican, Indian Spice, Dominican White Chocolate, Dominican Republic, Peruvian or Mayan Spice—is $9.99.

  • Organic lip balms in a special holiday 3-pack, available for a limited time in seasonal natural(!) flavors—Vanilla, Ginger Lemon and Wintermint. Pick up a Whole Foods Market Organic Lip Balm Trio for only $3.99.

Satsumas on Sale This Friday Only

5-pound boxes of satsumas will be on sale this Friday, December 2nd for $4.99 per box. These citrus gems are at the perfect peak of their season during the holiday, so to celebrate citrus and holiday seasons, we’re putting them on sale! These boxes of satsumas will be on sale for one day only, so make sure you stop in our stores this Friday to pick up your share (and don’t forget to grab some to share with friends)! Limits will vary by region, but you can contact your store for details.

Super sweet, juicy, seedless and easy to peel, the satsuma is a variety of mandarin orange and a cousin to the clementine. Satsuma season is, well, short and sweet, lasting from October to December so you’ve got to enjoy this sweet citrus burst of flavor while they’re here.

Sweet Satsuma Ideas

  • Add segments to sweet or savory salads, cheese trays and appetizer platters
  • Tuck into lunchboxes for a peel-and-eat snack (This small-sized citrus is just right for kids!)
  • Use the juice for cocktails, salad dressings, marinades and glazes
  • Add satsuma zest to baked goods, dressings, sauces, glazes and other recipes
  • Create an edible centerpiece
  • Give a basket of satsumas as a sweet holiday gift

Holiday Baking Recipes

The inviting aroma of baked goodies brings instant holiday cheer. Chilly weather, festive gatherings and hungry guests are just a few excuses to fire up the oven and mix together something yummy.

Whatever goodies you bake this year, honor the season by using the best ingredients — unbleached and unbromated flour, cage-free eggs, butter and milk from cows not treated with rBGH, and natural sweeteners, food colors and flavorings. Baking sweets and treats for special diets? We’ve got tips for gluten-free flour substitutions and plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free recipes.

Here are our favorite ways to say “I love December” with flour, butter and sugar – or, you know, gluten-free baking mix, coconut oil and maple syrup.

Bone Up on Holiday Hams

I grew up in a house where holiday meals were pull-out-all-the-stops feasts. So it was with much trepidation that I planned and prepared my first holiday dinner away from home. While I made substitutions here and there, ham remained as the elegant centerpiece because some things just can’t be replaced. It was then that I learned my parents’ secret; ham is a great choice for the holidays because it’s so easy to prepare and provides delicious leftovers for days.

Preparing a great ham starts with your purchase at the meat counter. At Whole Foods Market, we make no secret of how the pigs were raised for the meat you’re buying. Our hams are from pigs raised to meet our high standards, which means:

  • Raised with no antibiotics – ever
  • Raised with no added growth hormones*
  • No animal byproducts in the feed
  • No added nitrates or nitrites
  • Raised without gestation or farrowing crates
  • Certified to the Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating program

*Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones in raising pork

Hanukkah begins in three weeks, but we’ve been working hard for quite some time to meet your holiday needs. Whether you’re looking for seasonal staples or the best organic and gourmet offerings, Whole Foods Market is a one-stop shop for kosher items this holiday season.

Hanukkah observers around our offices used to complain about having to lower their standards to partake in traditional dishes. Not anymore! Our grocery buyers have worked hand in hand with our vendor partners to develop kosher products that also meet our strict quality standards, which require no artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners or hydrogenated fats.

From roasted chestnuts and latkes to matzo meal and Hanukkah gelt, we’re proud to work with vendors who provide the highest quality, best-tasting kosher products on the market. Here’s just a sampling of what’s in store for you this year:

Winterize Your Salads

Are you like most folks who tend to think of salads as a summer “thing”? It’s certainly true we eat them more when the weather is hot, but you’ll be happy to know how easy and satisfying it is to prepare winter salads, even warm winter salads. Combining an assortment of fresh seasonal ingredients makes a winter salad so appealing, and a good fresh salad is always a nice accompaniment to a heavy holiday meal.

When building a winter salad, keep in mind the bounty of gorgeous greens and fabulous fresh fruits and veggies that nature naturally provides at this time of year, and remember salads don’t always have to be completely raw. Cooked grains, beans and vegetables tossed with lighter raw fruits and vegetables make interesting, tasty winter salads. Here are some suggestions for “winterizing” your favorite salad: Read the rest of this entry »

Fresh Christmas Trees Are Here!

Mother Nature is gearing up for a wardrobe change as we head into the holidays, and so are we! This year, as in years past, we’re offering fresh Christmas trees in most of our stores*. Many will be Fraser Firs fresh from the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 10 miles southeast of Sparta, North Carolina, and grown by family-owned and operated Bottomley Evergreens & Farms.

Did you know that Fraser Firs are one of the most popular choices when it comes to bringing home a fresh tree for the holidays? With a dark green color, full shape, classic aroma, and excellent needle retention, no wonder the Fraser Fir holds onto all that glitz and glam so well! What’s your favorite reason for choosing a real tree? I think mine is that a well cared for tree can last up to three or four weeks, and who doesn’t love having that smell fill the air?

Theo Chocolate

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series.

To make Theo’s organic, Whole Trade® chocolate bars, sipping chocolates and roasted cocoa nibs, every single cocoa bean is roasted in a vintage 1930s ball roaster from Germany. In fact, nearly all of the machines in their chocolate factory are recycled and recalibrated from artisan factories in Europe. Just like the lengths that went into sourcing equipment, there is utmost emphasis on sourcing ingredients.

“We built a company to make great chocolate and to have a huge impact on the people who produce cocoa,” says Theo Chocolate CEO Joe Whinney. From bean to bar, the folks at Theo hold themselves to exceedingly high standards, scrutinize every step of the process and ruminate over every decision, big or small. Fair trade, organic cocoa; local mint, cherries and almonds; recyclable (and beautiful!) packaging are just a few of the choices they’ve made to make the world better for producers, the planet and chocolate lovers everywhere. All of Theo’s attention to detail has earned the company numerous awards and accolades since they began in 2007.

“It’s a labor of love,” says Debra Music, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We are acutely aware of the responsibility we have to create positive lasting impact.” As Music says, “Chocolate is an amazing vehicle for educating people, because as a culture we LOVE chocolate!”
