Teens Turning Green is calling on high school and college students to take on a 30-day eco lifestyle challenge. Learn how you can change the world and win prizes.

Erin Schrode is the co-founder and spokeswoman of Teens Turning Green, a student-led movement promoting global sustainability, youth leadership, environmental education and conscious lifestyle choices.

Have you ever felt as if you wanted to “do something,” but didn’t know where to start? Project Green Challenge is that chance, your entry point into action and sustainability. Our upcoming 30-day eco lifestyle challenge is mobilizing high school and college students nationwide through fun, simple and high impact daily steps. We challenge you to complete themed actions each day in October. Can you do it? Can you take your life from conventional to conscious?

I am proud to say that Project Green Challenge (PGC) is an initiative of youth, by youth, for youth! Our team of more than fifteen interns, staff, partners and a number of newly-appointed PGC campus reps has spent the last four months working tirelessly to develop the program structure, corporate and non-profit partnerships, and our multimedia platform. We have spoken with hundreds of high schools, colleges and universities about grounding this initiative, incorporating the Challenge into campus culture, extracurriculars, even curriculum.

Involve your campus – because this is a nationwide competition for schools too. Win an on-campus Sustainability 101 event, eco resource fair, organic lunch for leadership council, ice cream party, green cleaning supplies, and consultation with Teens Turning Green to set your school on a greener path. This is the beginning of a dynamic, collective, student-led movement to shift the paradigm!

We are using social and traditional media, a robust digital platform, and strong on-campus presence to bring the Challenge to you, into the hands of our generation. As a twenty-year-old, I fully understand the need for relevant themes and straight-forward actions to ensure the Challenge is accessible to young people and has maximum impact. Here’s a short video we created that you can post and share with your friends:

Bottom line: I want to empower YOU. I want to inform and inspire, showing my peers that small changes in our daily actions really can have a positive effect on our health and the environment.

Sign up to take the 30-day eco lifestyle Challenge and we will deliver the daily challenges directly to your inbox, complete with resources, tips, a glossary, experts, videos and more. When it is this simple and high impact, there’s no excuse for you not to join the movement to change the world – and spread the word far and wide!

Delve deeper, become more engaged, complete the green, greener and greenest levels of daily challenges, share your experiences with our audience – and you might just earn yourself a spot in the Challenge Finals! Ten finalists will be flown to San Francisco for an educational and inspiring two-day eco summit, which we have titled Green University.

You could win some really phenomenal prizes too! A $5000 college scholarship, $1000 gift card for Whole Foods Market, weekend trip for two to southern California, bicycle courtesy of Natracare, full eco dorm or room makeover, year’s supply of Nature’s Path breakfast and snack foods, organic and ethical clothing, natural body products, and much more.

We aim to raise awareness about conscious living, informed consumption, and the collective impact of individual actions, as well as empower students with actionable steps for their own lives. Help us get the word out! If we all take the Challenge and commit to being the change we wish to see in the world, then yes, we can build a powerful, diverse and far-reaching movement that inspires this generation to lead the transition from conventional to conscious and sustain our world. Sign up for Project Green Challenge today!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to invite you all to the 4th Annual Teens Turning Green National Summit, which is coming up in Marin County, California on February 6th + 7th. Teens (and adults, too!) from around the country are invited to RSVP online and join us. It is all moderated by teen campaign members and will feature extraordinary “green” industry leaders. I already can’t wait; it will be an amazing and empowering two days that you will not forget. You will hear from inspiring teens and eco leaders about a variety of green issues including lifestyle choices, green chemistry, and the health impact of toxic chemical exposure in our daily lives. Even if you aren’t that into green body care or cosmetics, these issues apply to everyone and there is a topic or speaker that everyone will be interested in.

We live in a great time for participating in community action and using our voices as citizens to bring about legislative change (as shown by Teens Turning Green’s political activism, teens do have a voice!) to protect our health and our earth. That is our goal as we engage in dialogue and brainstorming sessions with concerned and active teens, community members and visionary leaders to plan, strategize and develop next steps and positive outcomes for this unique, teen lead campaign.

Other campaign members and I are working on our preparation for the summit; talking to panelists, finalizing our questions questions, and getting every detail in place so that the weekend will be fun and educational. The things I’m looking forward to most are meeting up with some of my campaign member friends from different parts of the country, hopefully meeting some new ones, and getting to see people that I admire talk about their passions.

The annual summit is one of our favorite events of the year. Not only are there going to be panel discussions with amazing green gurus, but there is also a green spa, organic food, goody bags, and maybe even a few green experiments. Take a look at a short video from last year’s summit and maybe it will inspire you to want to join us! If so, please register online and you can even apply for a scholarship to be flown to Marin.
Can’t make the summit but are still interested? Let us know if you want to start a Teens Turning Green chapter of your own, participate in our Lips Against Lead project, or any other ideas you may have—we are here to help.

Thanks! I look forward to seeing you all at the summit!

Sincerely,
Emily

Imagine a wonderful green Christmas day. The scent of fair-trade hot chocolate fills the air as you sip from a recycled / recyclable cup. You look at your beautiful living tree with hand made ornaments and LED lights adorn the entire tree – thankful that your energy bill will not take a bite out of you this year. It’s easy to green your holidays, here are some simple tips!

Wrapping Gifts
Under the tree, sustainable gifts wrapped in recycled paper. Reuse the things you have around the house such as bags, boxes, fabrics, newspaper comics, magazines, and gift wrap from last year.

If you have to go with gift wrap, more sustainable choices include: tree-free paper available in woven grass, Lokta tree bark (made from the inner bark of the Lokta bush quickly re-grown in Napal), banana fiber (made from the bark of the Thai banana tree), spun silk, recycled office paper and recycled rag. You can also buy recycled wrapping paper.

Cards
Send an e-card or search the National Green Pages for cards made from kenaf, hemp, and other tree-free resources. Or instead of sending a card, make a phone call to a loved one.

The Tree
Christmas trees, lights, and ornaments are a classic tradition. If you don’t have a living tree, make sure you find a tree-cycling center after the holiday. Ornaments can be a very fun craft and reuse project for your friends and family made out of items that you normally recycle: paper towel rolls, old calendar pictures, and holiday wrapping paper. If you have any ornaments you no longer want from last year donate them to your local thrift store. Christmas lights can be a real energy consumer over the holidays. Fight back the energy bills by using a timer on your tree.

Dinner
When buying your Christmas dinner, shop your local Whole Foods Market and support locally grown products to reduce your eco-footprint. Instead of buying all new paper and plastic products, use dishes, silverware and cloth napkins. Make sure you recycle post-party cans, bottles, wrapping paper, etc. and compost food scraps.

Thoughtful Giving
This year instead of buying that video game, movie, etc. for a loved one or friend, offer your time. Make them dinner, walk the dog, or help with things around the house. Or you can make a donation in their honor to their favorite charity or organization. Shop for green gifts over the computer and save gas. Avoid toys and tape made with PVC plastic. PVC contains a chemical called vinyl chloride, a known human carcinogen. Also, there is lead and cadmium in some PVC plastics to keep it from breaking down – these ingredients can be particularly dangerous for children. To buy PVC free tape, check out this site.

Have a great green holiday!

Hayley Leibson is a high school freshman and a member of the Teens for Safe Cosmetics chapter in Marin, California.

From Aline, The Hockaday School • Dallas, TX

This past Saturday (October 4th) The Hockaday School, located in Dallas, Texas, was introduced to the excitement and passion of the Teen for Safe Cosmetics campaign. After an enlightening introduction about the campaign by Judi Shils and two campaign members, Hockaday students were convinced about the important cause and ready to get involved. I personally never knew the seriousness and potential harmful ingredients in beauty and personal care products that and my fellow peers and I use daily. I believe it is crucial for young women to raise awareness, advocate for change, and make a difference in today’s world.

Teen for Safe Cosmetics has been the most dynamic cause that I have encountered and I am in awe of all the possibilities and achievements of this campaign. Hearing about experiences like traveling to Sacramento to lobby for legislation and the success of their events was inspiring and invigorating.

After the meeting, everyone flocked to Whole Foods Market for the Teens Turning Green Collection launch event. The event was a huge success! The campaign’s new products were on display for purchase and girls enjoyed makeovers, manicures and an eco-friendly fashion show.

The Teens Turning Green line was also inspiring. I discovered that all the products were designed and created with the help of teens and I was amazed at how refreshing, practical and effective the products are. I plan to visit Whole Foods Market again this weekend and buy more of the line’s wonderful products. From this campaign I learned that teens can truly make a difference in their communities as well as the future of this country, and that action is the best way to bring about positive change. Hockaday is very excited about the Teens for Safe Cosmetics campaign and we cannot wait to join the fun!

From Dana:
Earlier this week, a “green” line of skincare called Teens Turning Green was launched in Whole Foods Market nationally. This past Monday, my mind could not wait until after school. Living in New York, I am lucky to have public transport (despite what people may tell you). At exactly 3:11 pm that day, I was on the 6 train heading down to 14th Street (Union Square) to see the unveiling of the line.

Walking into Whole Foods Market always make me happy, but to see that skincare, I was omg-today-is-the-day-I-win-the lottery-happy when I saw the products. As I grabbed more products off the shelf, I realized they were vegan, which made my day as a vegetarian! The ingredients were so pure and readable! I know there are many times when people pick up a bottle, look at the ingredients, and think “What in the world is that….and that…..and that?”

A couple of friends met up with me, which included girls and boys, from middle schoolers to early college students. My male friends were so surprised at themselves, because they thought they were being dragged along to some girly shopping trip. But in the end, they bought the most, and they are the ones loving the products the most. This line, even though it is “TEENS Turning Green” is so versatile, and should not be labeled as some other skincare line. This is a line with an understandable ingredient list, unisex products, and if I may so myself, darn good scents!

From Danielle:
I’m Danielle, a high school senior in Northern California. We have some pretty exciting news this week. After spending months testing products and planning our Teens Turning Green Collection, it is finally available in Whole Foods Market – nationally! Our group is SO excited, and this has been a very important week for the campaign. We are so eager to have people all over the country try the products that we have loved for so long. One of my personal favorites is the Pomega5 Pomegranate Cleansing Bar. I have been using the original bar from Pomega5 for over a year, and absolutely loved it. Whenever I use it, it makes my bathroom smell gorgeous! In the process of making the line, we tried out a bunch of different Pomega5 cleansing bar formulations, and the one that we came up with was a combination of all of our favorite aspects of each different ones. I am so happy that this bar is going to become accessible to teens all around the country, because it is a staple in my daily regimen– not only for the great smell, but because it makes my skin feel great.

Over the weekend, a few members of our campaign volunteered at the “Just Green” Search for the Cause event in Marin County, California. Although the event was attended by adults, we had a table promoting the Teens Turning Green Collection. Everyone at the event was so excited about the line, and a couple of people bought a set of the line on a pre-sale special at the event! This was very exciting for us, because we were further able to see how amazing our line truly is.

I hope that everyone will head over to Whole Foods Market in their neighborhood and take a look at the TTG Collection. The products are absolutely our favorites, and we are so glad that the country is going to be able to see for themselves what our campaign is about!

From Mattie:
Hi Whole Foods Market Readers! It’s Mattie Kahn from Teens for Safe Cosmetics back to tell you everything you need to know about scoring your very own set of Teens Turning Green. In case you didn’t know, our line made its debut at Whole Foods Market Monday, and it’s already begun to sell out in some stores! I wanted to make buying these products fun for my friends, so on Sunday I’m going to Whole Foods Market Columbus Circle with all of my friends to eat breakfast at the amazing food court and then pick up all of the Teens Turning Green products. If you have a Whole Foods Market near you try the same with your friends. There’s no better way to show less eco-enlightened friends the “green way” then to lead them to products that they’ll like as much, if not more then their current ones. I’ve never met someone who’s tried the Pomega5 Blemish Bar who didn’t love it immediately. Or what about Alaffia’s lightly scented body lotion? It’s more than just a moisturizer, its truly aromatherapy in a jar. After a long day, the sweet smelling mango is just the thing to mellow you out and make you feel pretty all at the same time. From the title alone it’s clear that this line is perfect for teens, but its not just for my age-group, this line can truly work for anyone.

Last week, samples in hand, I decided to have a genuine adult try out some of the products. “It’s called Teens Turning Green,” she said to me skeptically. “Just try it!” And being the wonderful friend that she is, she disrupted her daily cosmetics routine to test run some of the products. Suffice it to say the Perfectly Pom Moisturizer is now taking up shelf-space in a certain airy Brooklyn bathroom. “It’s so light,” Annie exclaimed. “So fresh. It’s so different from everything else that out there.” Her other Not-Just-For-Teen picks, EO’s revolutionary hand sanitizer (“The scent, it’s amazing!”) and Benedetta soap. She loves the way it feels, I love the way it foams. I can almost guarantee that anyone can find something that they love in each of these products. So no matter how old you are find your set at Whole Foods Market before they’re all gone!

Each September, I look forward to the start of the new school year; but this September, all I can think about is the “Teens Turning Green” collection. In just a few weeks, this fabulous line of products will be available at Whole Foods Markets nationwide!

The girls of Teens for Safe Cosmetics, myself included, cannot wait to walk into the Whole Body section of our local Whole Foods Market and see this amazing collection sitting on the shelves. The collection is something I have always wanted: a line of products made from safe and healthy ingredients, formulated for teens! And not just for any teen, but a teen turning green! I think that becoming an educated consumer is a key aspect of turning one’s life green, and by learning about these wonderful products you are doing just that.

Last week Mattie told you about the Depth Sea Foam Cleanser, the Pomega 5 Pomegranate Cleansing Bar, and the Sunstar Purifying Mask. This week I’ll be telling you about Benedetta’s Sassy Sacred Soap and Terra Naturals Sport Deodorant, two products I cannot live without.

Most conventional soaps are made with synthetic chemicals and unnatural scents, which are unhealthy for you and the environment. The soap featured in the “Teens Turning Green” collection, however, is one of the cleanest on the market. I can say from my own experience, that Benedetta’s Sassy Sacred Soap is amazing and there is nothing like it. It does not contain any synthetic or chemically processed ingredients; only fresh organic and biodynamic ingredients that leave your skin feeling clean, healthy and smooth, no matter what your skin type. It contains Fair Trade Shea butter which will make your skin feel so soft, yet totally moisturized – and I mean feeling actually moisturized for the whole day, not just temporarily after you use it! That is why I highly recommend using it for shaving because it keeps your skin feeling silky smooth, even after you shave. Benedetta’s Sassy Sacred Soap also smells amazing because it contains essentials oils of lemon and rosemary, which give the soap an invigorating yet calming scent. Even the bottle it comes in is worth praising, because it comes in a leach-free, recycled plastic foamer that efficiently uses the contents of the bottle. And of course, the foamer gives the soap a mousse-like texture, which makes Benedetta’s Sassy Sacred Soap all the more fun to use. This one-of-a-kind golden colored soap complements its equally unique name and I hope you will love it as much as I do!

Another necessity that I use in my daily routine is deodorant. Deodorant is a concern for many teens, especially during warmer weather or during athletic practices. But the underarm area is very delicate because it is located right next to your lymphatic system, a direct connection to your immune system. Therefore it is important to know exactly what ingredients you are putting on your skin and how they could be potentially harmful to your body. The teens of Teens for Safe Cosmetics have tried many deodorants, and Terra Naturals Sport Deodorant met our own standards as well as the standards of Whole Foods Premium Body Care – test it for yourself! In just a few weeks, Terra Naturals Deodorant will be making its debut in the “Teens Turning Green” collection. By using this deodorant, you can be sure that you will not have to sacrifice your health for smelling good! Terra Naturals has formulated a deodorant specifically for teens, using only the finest of organic ingredients, that targets body odor naturally, without clogging your underarm pores with harmful synthetic chemicals, parabens or aluminum. Sweating is a natural process, but by using this lightly scented deodorant you can feel confident (because you won’t smell!) that it is safe for you and the environment.

If you’re going to use these kinds of products anyway, why not use greener and healthier alternatives? Check out the “Teens Turning Green” collection, coming to a Whole Foods Market near you, in just a few weeks!

Sure, the end of summer can make any teen feel a bit sad with a new school year beginning, and the weather starting to turn. But the girls of Teens for Safe Cosmetics are looking forward to the fabulous launch of the Teens Turning Green Collection, featured exclusively at Whole Foods Markets nationwide. The Collection will land on shelves by the last week in September.

It is the first line of truly eco-skin care that’s been formulated specifically for teen skin! And as if that fact alone isn’t enough, each of the products included in our line attains Whole Food Market’s new Premium Body Care Standard, the most comprehensive in the industry. Knowing what you’re putting on your skin is free of parabens and PEGs means that one less thing to worry about every day. Besides picking out a cleanser or moisturizer is almost an overwhelming task, all by itself.

With so many choices of “green” skin care regimens (many of which can be found at your local Whole Foods Market) alone, it’s daunting to try and choose just one. I find myself wishing that someone who knew all the brands and companies could just pick and choose the best products from each and show them to me.

Well, as I’m sure you can guess, that’s exactly what Teens for Safe Cosmetics has done. Campaign members from the New York City chapter of which I am a proud member, and the Bay Area Chapter hand selected their favorite eco-products in every skin care category. Then we reached out to the companies who produce those products, told them about our plans, and asked them to help us create the safest, highest quality product possible. In my opinion, they couldn’t have done a better job. Each product looks great, works flawlessly, and has an ingredient list that you can actually pronounce! But just like how on the first day of school its nice to know a little about someone before you go introduce yourself, it might be a good idea to get to know just a bit about a the products in this ground-breaking line before you go out and get your hands on your own set!

If you’re like me, and aren’t exactly your most awake in the morning you need to use the two cleansers featured in our line. First up, the Depth Sea Foam Facial Cleanser : the husband-wife team who created Depth Body are actually both marine biologists! They discovered that certain marine botanicals, when combined with gentle cleansers could leave skin clean and refreshed, but not dry. The cooling gel-like consistency coupled with the fresh botanical scent could make anyone feel revitalized.

The second cleanser in our line is perfect for both day and nighttime use, and though every product in the TTG line is a favorite, it should be noted that this product is especially beloved by each and every teen in the campaign. Pomega 5, a company responsible for several products in the line, created this Pomegranate Blemish Cleansing Bar with teen skin in mind. The bar is gentle on the skin, but still contains ingredients that are great at fighting breakouts. Stressing for exams is understandable, but at least now you’ll know that your skin will be truly problem-free. Before Pomega’s Blemish Cleansing Bar most cleansers either made my skin dry and flaky or didn’t work to really combat blemishes, but this is the perfect balance between the two. The girls on the campaign all have such different skin types, basically representing each possible skin tone, and this product is adored by all!

The Sunstar Purifying Mask made by Astara made it’s way into the Teens Turning Green line only after the dedicated work of company founder, Sunny Griffin. Though the teens loved the product when they first discovered it, the mask contained a few ingredients, which didn’t meet Whole Foods Market’s Personal Body Care Standard. Instead of giving up or dropping out of the line, Astara reformulated the product happily—eager to create the safest skincare possible for teens. That represents more than anything what this line, and the Teens for Safe Cosmetics campaign is all about: dedicated teens and adults striving for a cleaner, greener world.

Next week, you’ll hear about the rest of the collection.

Alaffia Mango Shea Body Butter

Astara Purifying Mask

Depth Sea Foam Cleanser

EO Organic Rosemary & Mint Sanitizing Spray

Pomega5 Pomegranate Blemish Cleansing Bar

Pomega5 Perfectly Pom Moisturizer

Pomega5 Pomegranate Toning Mist

Terra Naturals Sport Deodorant

It’s absolutely fabulous and coming to a Whole Foods Market near you in a couple weeks.

I’m Emily, and I am a sophomore in High School and a part of Teens for Safe cosmetics. A few weeks ago, Teens for Safe Cosmetics had our kickoff meeting for the 2008/ 09 campaign. It was a great meeting with tons of fabulous ideas for our Teens Turning Green Collection, for events, and for new advocacy strategies. However, the most exciting new change was all the new faces in the room! About 10 new teens came to our meeting, and I was reminded of the first time that I went to a meeting and everyone else seemed to know what they were doing while I, unfortunately, was leagues behind in comprehension.

I talked to my new friend Bonnie to figure out what exactly confused her about the new environment and how I could help. We figured out that the best way to understand the science, health effects, and to get familiar with green alternatives was to evaluate her own products. We decided to get informed on a really cool site called Skin Deep. This site, put up by the Environmental Working Group, lets anyone search their favorite brands, products, and the ingredients in them. Each of these are rated on a 0 to 10 scale for how healthy the product, etc, is (10 being the worst, 0 the best). The page then tells you why it was rated that way and what health affects it is known to cause.

Once you figure out that some of your products may be toxic, you may want to swap some of them for healthier ones. Take a look at our Greener Alternatives list. Here is my challenge to all of you: look up 5 products that you use daily on Skin Deep, get educated about the ingredients and find greener alternatives. Then, change one product tomorrow. Let us know what you learn and we will post your stories. Also, help us spread the word and build campaign chapters around the country. if you’re interested email us at info@teensforsafecosmetics.org.

Next week, we will start telling you about our fabulous new product line, The Teens Turning Green Collection, launching exclusively at Whole Foods Market nationally in late September.

Hi I’m Emily. I’m starting my sophomore year in High School and have been part of Teens for Safe Cosmetics for almost a year. I am in this campaign because I believe that what my mom, sisters and friends put on our bodies daily should not be toxic. I’m looking forward to the national launch of the Teens Turning Green Collection at Whole Foods Market in a couple weeks as a way to educate my generation about greener alternatives in skin and body care products. It is truly inspiring to know that teens are making a difference when they stand up for what they believe in.

These tips are not only about health but have me thinking about the impact that I can have on the planet as I get back into my routine of endless homework, emailing and talking on my cell phone. And even though we are heading back to school, the sun’s rays are still really strong — so find a non-toxic sunscreen (check link below) when you’re hanging on the beach the last few days of summer or biking to school. It’s pretty simple to start back to school with an eco outlook. Check out these tips and links, and watch Jessica talk about greening her college life in the Big Apple. Have fun!

Protect your skin year-round with sunscreen. Choose a safe sunscreen that actually protects your skin (look for UVA and UVB protection) and is free of toxic chemicals. Look at Environmental Working Group’s new report and complete list of safe offerings.

Cell phones have become indispensable tools in today’s society, but too much use can pose serious health risks. To minimize exposure to the electromagnetic energy, limit calls, turn cell phones off, wear a headset or use speakerphone, text message, and use landlines for long chats.

Turning off your wireless network at night not only conserves energy, but also lessen EMF exposure while you are sleeping. Even when you are not using it, the wireless signal is still transmitted throughout the home / office / school / building, etc. Take that simple precautionary step!

Purchase 100% post-consumer and alternative fiber paper, reuse lightly-used sheets for scratch, print on both sides whenever possible, and designate a place to keep paper isolated for easy recycling and to lessen what goes into landfills.
