Our Organic Chickens are Ahead of the Flock

Our organic birds are ahead of the flock!

Not only have they met a strict set of organic standards, but we also work closely with our chicken producers to ensure birds are certified to the Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Program.

This tiered welfare program rates how chickens are raised using independent, third-party certifiers who audit every farm and assess their compliance to the different Step level standards.

In order to achieve Step certification, each producer needs to meet approximately 100 different standards covering everything from animal health and management, to housing and outdoor conditions, and handling and transport.

For example, birds with access to the outdoors (Step-Rated 3) must be given shade and places to hide from hawks and other aerial predators, so they feel comfortable being outdoors and get to enjoy roaming around outside the barn.

At Step 4 (pasture-based), birds live continuously on pasture or in foraging areas and are only housed at night or when seasonal conditions might put them at risk.

These are just a couple of examples of what’s required to be a Step-rated bird.

Read this blog post to learn all about the different step levels for chicken.

Have you tried our organic chicken yet?

Whether succulently roasted, flame kissed out on the grill or fried to golden, gastronomic perfection, our organic birds always fly off the table. I have been following you guys on Twitter for a while and am a long time Whole Foods shopper. The quality of the meat and produce you guys sell is better than any other Food Market i have tried. We used to buy frozen chicken from Ralphs and after 1 taste of your organic chicken we were sold and never looked back! I dont know if you guys try to win awards, but I stumbled on the Shorty Awards and immediately thought of you guys, u should definitely enter. You guys have the total package. It looks like their deadline is soon, but I wanted to send you the link http://industry.shortyawards.com/

I have been buyimg your chicken from whole food for many years, the reasons that I have choosen to buy from you is that you chickens not only taste delicious ,but most importantly the chickens are allowed to roam freely and are free from GM feed - they have a quality of life, which for me is important.

What "step" number are these chickens? I buy local farm chicken to avoid supporting the terror animals have to go through in hours of packed transport to slaughter plants (also contributes to CO2 and warming) but if WF organic chicken is not subjected to this I'll happily buy. The last time I asked at the meat counter I was told the highest rating they ever carried was 5 rated chicken but they didn't have any and I've never seen them there whenever I checked again. PS I've heard that WF was considering purchasing their own slaughterhouse mobiles but didn't because the units came from Europe and so couldn't be USDA inspected beforehand. If this is the case please reconsider looking into similar mobiles made in the US that could be available for inspection to meet the USDA rules; humane processing and sustainability are vital considerations for concerned consumers.

@AUBREY - Since our products vary between regions it depends on if the region carries a Step 5 vendor. Right now we have Step 5 vendors in the Pacific Northwest, Southern Pacific, Mid-Atlantic, South, Southwest, and Florida regions. Let me know if your store is located in one of these regions and I can let you know the vendor. Thanks!
