Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

My 7 year old nephew and I are unplugging all non-essential items, turning our garden organic this year and we've added taking out the recycles to his chore list. :-)

I want to plant a container garden on my balcony. I also frequent Farmer's Markets in the spring and summer, so I can support local, sustainable growing practices. I also need to get better at recycling...I want to recycle everything that can be recycled!!!

I resolve to bring a reusable (BPA free) water bottle to the gym with me instead of disposable water bottles. I also resolve to take all those reusable bags that I already have and actually USE THEM when I go to the grocery store (ie keep a constant supply in my car instead of in my drawers at home.)

The simple change I can make is to use less water and start using natural products while cleaning my car. Also, I've been trying to get my coworkers to use natural products.

I have seen such a difference with my allergies since using natural cleaners. Also it is a great piece of mind when you have toddlers + pets touching floors etc with safe cleaners.

I'm growing food at home this year, on my balcony -- greens, tomatoes, herbs, carrots. And I'll be saving rainwater to use for some of my watering. Or hopefully all of it!

A simple change that I have made is using a motto. It is "the richest person is the one that needs the least." I keep this in mind when I shop. Not so much for food but definitely for clothing, shoes and the kids want for plastic toys. I also use this idea in a way of not wasting what I have. Using everything to it's fullest potential.

I have been using green cleaners since my oldest started showing signs of breathing issues as a baby. He is almost ten, and has recovered completely. This year we are making some changes to our home to make it more energy efficent.

My son goes to a "green" elementary school. He has actually taught me a few things! I am working on building a community vegetable/herb garden at the end of my street. ( I live in the city). My neighbors and I can enjoy the fresh produce and save on trips to the store!

I re-use the bags that the newspaper comes in. My neighbors and friends will also save these bags and give them to me. I use them as the bags to pick up after my dog when I take him on walks. It's a great way to give them a 2nd purpose and eliminate my need to buy plastic bags to pick up after my dog.
