Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

I think my earth day resolution is to live more simply and with a greater respect of the natural processes around us that are oftentimes ignored! I will buy as much locally sourced products as I can. As far as clothing and houseware, I'll buy as much things as I can from secondhand shops. And of course, attempt to reduce my consumerism as much as possible. c:

Gosh we already do so much as it is, we recycle everything our city takes, we reduse, reuse, we shop at resale shops instead of buying new, i use vinegar cleaners, but it never hurts to do more. So I think I will go ahead and get the composters ready and start composting, using the clothe bags and try to find other outlets to recycle the stuff the city will not take.

I am a firm believer in being a good steward to our one and only Mother Earth. I currently recycle, purchase sulfate and paraben free shampoo/conditioner, buy only organic and non GMO foods, make my own juice, and currently use Shaklee cleaning products. My next project will be to start a container garden with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, chili peppers, and basil.

With my first baby on the way, I'm changing all of my cleaning products to more natural options. I'll buy a variety of brands, but all from Whole Foods. I trust you as a brand, therefore I trust the brands you sell.

We have been planting our own garden for years and years, and it is well worth the effort in so many ways! I highly suggest it, even if it is small or in containers, it is healthier, and educational for your kiddos!

This year I will ride my bike 320 miles and raise a minimum of $2400 to support cleaner energy, cycling and safer home products. I'll be participating in The Climate Ride and will support 350.org, League of American Bicyclists and the Environmental Working group. I will also be increasing the my home garden and helping a few friends get their gardens started.

I will refuse convenience items( fast foods, fast packaging, fast beverages, fast clothing). I already compost, garden, recycle after I have refused and reused and shop at Goodwill. I am currently making bed rolls for the homeless from plastic shopping bags collected from neighbors that I know they will never recycle. I use re-usable bags for shopping. I will hug the planet a little harder and live a less convenient life.
