As the holidays approach the spirit of celebration and sharing can be felt everywhere. Christmas for me since growing up in Ghana has always revolved around the family, a time when everybody takes a break from work to focus on spending quality time with each other. African homes mostly pride themselves on their holiday cooking as each home plans elaborate meals and in the spirit of sharing various homes send over plates of their cooking to each other. The holidays are a time of joy and celebration, of getting together with family and friends and sharing the gifts of the season. This is also the most wasteful time of the year. In fact, North Americans produce 25% more waste during this time of year than any other, which equates to 25 million extra tons of garbage going to the landfill. The Whole Foods Market Green Mission Team has gathered our favorite tips to feature on this blog throughout the holidays to help us all reduce our load. We know our customers are some of the greenest folks around, so please share your tips with us too. Hopefully we’ll help each other discover new and creative ways to live lighter on the planet this holiday season. Read the rest of this entry »

Recently, I was visiting with a client who has accomplished a great deal towards improving her health and meeting her goals of healthy eating, regular exercise and special quiet time for herself. But when the subject of the holidays came up, her mood shifted to one of downright dread over the slew of parties she was facing between her job, her husband’s work, and invitations from a number of friends. Her fears of what she calls “festive failure” are very real and affect a number of us with good intentions each holiday season. Read the rest of this entry »

Chances are your holiday guest list may include someone with a special diet need. Are you ready to tie on an apron, get out the rolling pin and start baking dozens of holiday cookies? I am! Mixing up batches of dough and baking trays of cookies while listening to holiday music on a Sunday afternoon in December must be one of my favorite holiday activities. There’s something irresistible about the aroma of warm spices and freshly baked goodies. For help with your seasonal baking, check out our holiday baking guide.
What will you do with all those cookies you’re going to bake, besides savor them with a tall glass of milk? A few ideas to get you started:
Organize a cookie exchange at home with friends and neighbors or in the office. Ask everyone to bring a few dozen cookies, then mix and match to end up with an assortment of holiday treats.
Cookies make great gifts. Wrap them up in waxed or parchment paper and tie with ribbons, or package them in reusable tins. Recipients will be delighted by your thoughtfulness.
Host a holiday dessert party. Bake several kinds of cookies (the beauty is that they all can be made ahead of time), make pots of coffee, spiced tea and hot chocolate, and sit back and relax with your guests.
